Because that code checks if it's true anyways so it would not matter, so seeing there is specific scripting for this it is most likely not a leftover and just as secret

I had this line play in my only playthrough of Portal 2. This was several years ago but I just turned around and walked back for a while and this played. I don't remember why I turned around, but I remember this line.
When there is a cutscene or dialogue, there will be a invisible box that triggers it, the devs meant to make 2 boxes but if 2 boxes are very near each other they merge together, including voicelines, so if you go In and out and in the box it plays the sound or voicelines
When you enter GLaDOS's chamber and go down the stairs to the bit where you have to jump and wait for a while he'll start saying things that most people don't get to hear because they jump right away
All I could think of is misread coding that they forgot to get rid of due to changes the devs made within the process of the map. Like maps and locations can change, making the code a bit more funky. Or it's a voiceline delay when it got triggered on the catwalk.
So, I've always played Portal 2 in German and as I was going through the German GLaDOS Voicelines in the wiki, I noticed that there are two voicelines where GLaDOS calls Chell by her name (both before turning into PotatOS). I think I recall actually hearing one of these in the game, but I have never been able to find it again. And then, at some point, I saw a video where someone claimed that GLaDOS never calls Chell by her name. So were these voicelines indeed cut? And if so, why were they translated then?
I've never personally played the German version of the game, but I do know that these voice lines were cut from the English version. They were recorded, and still remain in the games files which likely means they were cut very close to the games final release. That would explain why the german voice line was recorded as well. Since the voice lines can still be accessed, I'm guessing you heard the line while playing a custom test on the workshop. Test designers love to use unused voice lines.
@@LimeMaxx Ah, that makes sense! I don't remember ever playing much on the workshop, but my memory is pretty bad, so it might be the reason! Thanks for clarifying :) I think it's really cool that even these cut lines were translated (even though it was probably a mistake). What is interesting btw, is, that the lines of the turret quoting Cave Johnson were probably added quite late into development, as these were actually not translated, despite being in the game since launch.
At my first playthrough I triggered that line and was really confused by it because I have watched countless let's plays of the game and never heard that line until then.
I always noticed and thought it was a little funny that right at the beginning when wheatley is first introduced, there is a voiceline that plays but immediately gets cut off by his terror from seeing your face for the first time. You can really only notice this if you have captions turned on
Here is the series of events: *Chell wakes up* Announcer: "Good morning. You have been in suspension for nine nine... nine nine ni- This courtesy call is to inform you that all test subjects should immediately vacate [FADES OUT] Wheatley: "Hello? Anyone in there?" Wheatley: "Helloooo?" Wheatley: "Are you going to open the door? At any time?" *Chell opens the door* Wheatley: "HA! I knew someone was alive in here." *Wheatley cuts himself off on the first word* Wheatley: "AH! Oh. My. God. You look terribl-- ummm... good. Looking good, actually." *Wheatley heads slowly into the room* Wheatley: "Are you okay? Are you - Don't answer that. I'm absolutely sure you're fine. There's plenty of time for you to recover. Just take it slow." - and continuing as normal
It's foreshadowing to him throwing the player into bottomless pit later... As happens a lot on portal... The longer you delay the next area the more they talk, often with inside jokes or circular references.
it might be a bug when this voice-line was SUPPOSED to be played, but since we back tracked, its probably supposed to play there and then when walking it'll play but y'know. It bugged out and then that line plays at the wrong time.
That might be intentionally left in aka not cut as it might be him reacting to the player not wanting to walk along the catwalk and deciding to go back but at the same time the voice line seems not nearly as refined as every other voice line so idk
I heard this voiceline when playing portal 2 singleplayer maps with my friend in coop (while figuring out why things were not working on this map even when I walked through the triggers a second time)
One of the more interesting cut voice lines was of Cave Johnson trying to convince Caroline to get her brain downloaded, but it sounded too much like a boss trying to... giggity an employee and it even made Ellen McLain cry when she was voicing it.
It was supposed to be played after Chell Jumps from the broken Stairs into the catwalk room entrance but the Trigger was accidentally loaded after you cross the Catwalk causing the line to be played when you return. You were meant to jump down And Wheatley would say his still held line and comes to the realization that your his rail now and hes worried Chell would jump into a Bottomless pit like she did for the stairs and warns her not to get to close to the edge...
I’m freakin’ out here because a long time ago I accidentally found that! I don’t know why I went back to the other room though. Probably my ADHD and the thousands of hours I have playing Portal 2.

Personally from a mapping perspective (since im a mapper /modder), i think its a left over mapping trigger from a earlier version of the map that they never bothered to fix cuz it never impacted the main gameplay experience that much 🤷♂️
i dont know why it is there but i think it is because it schould play if you walk over the catwalk and is there becaus of it is so long and because of a bug it is not playen the first time and the looking down joke was made because there was no time to fix the bug but when we walk back it triggers the voice line
I Think it ment to be there for players who are scared (somehow) and it is advice and a joke at the same time even if it is bad advice and thats why you have to go back

Pretty sure it’s just a little secret that can be triggered after that previous dialogue was triggered, backtracking to a certain point, and then going back to the room again.
You can't, not in the base game.
