For anyone wondering why pistoliers have delusions of melee-based grandeur, it's because, in the lore, they are the children of nobility trying to earn their knighthoods. Great video, Rob. You definitely gave me some things to think about.
That desperately needed to be a Ld check rather than a 50/50. I have 10 Pistoliers that will never see the table because of it. I already play Beastmen, I don't need another army that doesn't do what I tell it.
I think the important part about greatswords is that they give stubborn to their detachment. You can potentially set up lose-lose charges for your opponent, where if they charge the greatswords, they get countercharged in the flank, but if they charge the detachment, you know its going to fall back in good order, so you can position your greatswords for charging the next turn. Probably a bit magical-christmasland compared to just bringing demigryphs, but could be very rewarding if it works
There is plenty of great content out there but Square Based really are a cut above in terms of being superbly balanced between insights and the level of detail. Cutting away to rules is especially useful/effective.
'the empire roster is very honest'- you've nailed why i was always drawn to them; you could eyeball pretty much any mini on the table and know what its capabilities were. empire always felt like the least cheesy faction
Hell yeah. This is the video I have been waiting for. Empire was the faction that got me into Warhammer in the early 90s. When I returned to the game when I could actually buy an army the Old World had been nuked. I always held out hope so built that army when the kits were affordable, shame I based my new army on rounds and ovals to play Freeguild in AOS, but that is not going to stop me playing. Keep up the great content Rob as always.

I just needs some Demigryphs and wizards and I will have an impressive army. 4 cannons, hellblaster, steam tank and tons of cavalry and troops. Flagellants also look epic as a reserve unit to countercharge. TOW looks like so much fun
A classic army that I think is going to come into its own through the arcane journal. There’s so many cool options they could look into, Marienburg, Middenheim, Nuln, Sylvania, Crusading Knights, Altdorf (maybe as a classic empire army with ogres and halflings ), Dogs of War, Tilea, Estalia, the list could go on and on!
Didn't they only give two generic options in all released Arcane Journals so far? I think we'll only see something like Knightly Orders X Gunnery School.

You guys are now officially my go-to for TOW content. Brilliant video! There is only one Imperium and that is the Empire of Man. There is only one God-emperor and his name is Sigmar. For Magnus, for the Empire and for Sigmar!
Favorite detachments for my Army in the past were either handgunners or crossbowmen on one side to stand and fire, and a detachment of halberdiers to counter charge the enemies flank with their Strength 4 halberds. Spearmen of at least 20 to 30 unit size as the regimental unit. Militia were often good to mass together in a massive unit and push up a flank. Often they are ignored for juicier more tempting targets and will often actually make it to the enemies blocks of ranged troops before they realized they were in trouble. Few archers can withstand a tidal wave of of village drunks and angry townsfolk piling upon them.
Dude that's awesome. I'm going to be running an empire turncoats army that have aligned themselves with chaos (also i can then use my greatswords and flaggellents are murauders in chaos warriors.) Buff stacking with a level 4 wizard with daemonology and a priest and bsb with a few great cannons!

i've been thinking about doing a marienburg force that have gone into the border princes for some early modern-esque colonialism. just got to figure out who the fantasy dutch are colonising...
Great video but i miss something in empire engineer rules. Master of ballistics special rule says that friendly war machine can either re-roll single artillery dice, or use engineer ballistic skill. @@SquareBasedOldWorld Yeah! I'm binge watching them all now. Very interesting, and you manage to make me VERY interested in all of them. They are all so cool! Ofc time, space and money won't allow me to collect them all but if I could, I would.
I hope that by the time the Empire comes into focus in TOW there will be new knight models. Much of the pre-existing Empire range holds up fairly well, but the old knightly orders set is well past its sell-by date.
A question for the magic item video: Does the sword of justice synergise with the laurels of Victory? Does Laurels of victory count on the mounts attacks?
First fantasy models I ever bought were the 10 halberdiers box in 4th edition, just normal blokes shanking all the horrible fiends arrayed against them alway appealed to me! Still do and I can’t wait to bang my Empire Army out for ToW.

May be Oldhammer coming in but Empire brings 2 cannons in every list, then fills in from there. I like that that the troops are cheap and inter-reliant, that has shown to be the best Empire.
The best way to think of characters in the Empire is as supporting elements. You add one to support a specific unit or aspect of what you want. Engineer for warmachines, Warrior Priests for hard hitting or defensive (not quite anvil) blocks. Wizards and Captains fit as you see fit. Don't put stock in the characters when the combined lined troops can do the work with enough support.

Question; why is the Griffon listed on a 50 x 50 Base and the imperial Griffon on a 60 x 100? They come from the same Box only the imperial Griffon has 2 heads right?
No, the 50x50 Griffon would be the older metal versions, which weren't ridiculously large. Any version of the current AOS plastic griffon would be an Imperial Griffon. The second head is a 20-point upgrade.
@@aediusbarbatus ah ok i see. I asked because i bought the AOS Griffon with Rider and the kit has 3 options; Karl Franz with Death Claw, Lord/Mage on Griffon (with one head) and Lord/Mage on imperial Griffon and the only thing that makes him "imperial" is two heads.
Trying to wrap my head around regiments+detstchments, it looks like the opponent can avoid the reactions by charging tge detstchments....so how does one beneift from detatchments of the opponent can charge the supporting hand gunners instead of the regiment?
@@SquareBasedOldWorld makes sense! On a second look they just have to be within 3" which gives a fair pit of formation flexibility but immediately I'm thinking an arrowhead...a block of infantry with handgunners 3 inches away from the rear corners

You will have to position those units well. It's not an immediately obvious choice as it Wil require loads of skill to play
@@SquareBasedOldWorld makes sense! On a second look they just have to be within 3" which gives a fair pit of formation flexibility but immediately I'm thinking an arrowhead...a block of infantry with handgunners 3 inches away from the rear corners
High Elves are next… right? 😂 ok I’ll stop… 🤣 ❤
They actually are
@@SquareBasedOldWorld whoop! 🙌😆❤️
I played Empire for 15 years at the time of warhammer fantasy. Won tournaments, ETC. Believe me detachment units and small archers units of 5 are sacred in an empire army.
Looking forward to ogre mercenaries in the arcane journal 🤞
Detachment rules hurt my brain
Wow yet another great review
*FOR THE EMPIRE!*
