The world's smallest legit crossbow?

- The team here at The Slingshot Channel wanted to make another small crossbow, after all these looong weapons we recently presented.
The challenge: The smallest possible encapsulated (=safe) crossbow for 20" 2219 crossbow arrows. That's right, arrows, not bolts. (The difference: Arrows have fletching.)
In Terry Pratchet's "Discworld" novels, there is a weapon he calls the "Spring-Gonne". Basically a length of steel tube with a spring that shoots steel bolts. Highly illegal in that universe! We wanted to make that weapon, but adapt it to rubber of course, and (as mentioned already) for fletched arrows.
So we designed a crossbow that can "chamber" these arrows.
It is not much larger than the arrow itself.
We attached the strongest rubber that allows you to cock the weapon with the butt plate against your chest (very quick reloading that way). Eight bands of TBG, 3cm straight, per side. Total draw is about 150 lb.
The tip protrudes, which not only allows for broadheads of any kind - but it also makes it possible to safely unload the weapon.
Total weight is 650 gramms (1,5 lb) with the rubber installed (but w/o the arrow).
The weapon shoots very accurately and is reasonably powerful, as shown in the video.
We think this is a very legit weapon - ideal as a backup crossbow!
A new handmade slingshot is shown as a bonus. The polyurethane finish is stunning. Here is a pdf with some tips how to replicate those results:

Crossbows really don't need a stock, as there is very little recoil. Crossbows had no stock in medieval times. The stock was added by modern manufacturers so they resemble guns. This one is so light that a stock would only make it bulky.
I will soon play myself, ten years after the apocalypse. I need to be thinner and bearded for that role. Lost a few pounds, but not nearly enough.
I no longer use rollers. The effect is small, but the bands tear very soon. It is better to just use more rubber.
It does have a cross, it is just very short. The rubber bands are attached to it.
Crossbow = muscle operated, has a trigger, shoots projectiles, but does not have a tube like barrel
Crossbows are muscle operated. Your body strength is the energy source behind it. If you want power, you either have to be strong OR use mechanical cocking devices, like block and tackle setups.
Can you make a step by step tutorial?
I made plenty of pistol crossbows already. This time I wanted to make the smallest one that shoots full size crossbow arrows.
Depends. It is best to use my forum for such questions!
I love how happy he is in all of his videos. Your enthusiasm paints a smile on my face. Thank you :)
Picatinny rail is a possibility, for a red dot maybe. Buttstick is a bad idea, bulky and prevents the chest-cocking method.
Check out the ancient Roman hand held ballista crossbows, operated by twisted rope bundles. Or google "spring powered crossbow", lots of hits and pics.
Love it! I also like your new perspective for demonstrating accuracy right through your yard!
That is excellent. The problem with crossbows regarding their use in confined spaces is their span, and your design solves that problem brilliantly.
My wife had the Hilux, crashed it, got the Polo, then upgraded to the Scirocco GTS when she started to work as a medical doctor. I still have a company issue A6 (just one more week), and my beloved Dodge RAM.
As I state in my "welcome" video, this channel is mostly about rubber based weapons. This one is no exception.
It would be less powerful (but powerful enough for being lethal), BUT it weighs much, much less, and is extremely small in comparison. Most crossbows are huge and very heavy.
I like the way he says bye bye...he looks so gentle for his size... thumbs up!!
Those 315 fps are probaby achievable with ridiculously lightweight arrows only. Try shooting the +500 gr 20" 2219s, and you will see how fast it REALLY goes.
Seriously, those commercial crossbows have awesome power. Too much for my back yard anyway, as the bolts never last long. But they are very heavy and bulky. Plus I hate that most powerful ones can only be cocked with a harness.
The chest plate solves that issue. The pressure is spreaded over a wide area.
It is there, just very short. The bands are attached to it.
I love the beard counter! You always do such interesting stuff, and are one of the few people I watch everything for. Keep it up!
I throw my finished creations on a pile in my second garage. My truck doesn't fit in it anyway.
Awesome design! do you have a video on your different crossbow triggers? I especially like the 'long handle squeeze type'. I would like to make a speargun with that concept. Thanks!
What's so cool about this guy is that the stuff he makes are lethal. All of them aren't just gimmicks, they do damage. It's really interesting.
That is a awesome design. Small, powerful and reasonably accurate. A red dot sight on that would complement it very well. Nice job.
looking good with the beard joerg! love your channel and all your builds, you're an inspiration! keep up the awesome work :)
No reason for punishment. I was glad she wasn't hurt. Insurance covered the whole damage.
Mine has a horizontal limb, the rubber bands are attached to it. The arms are just very short.
Impressive work, yet again. Thanks!
Thanks for the great videos. Makes me feel like a kid again every time I see them
Why should it be important if the energy is stored in rubber instead of steel, fiber glass or compound?
I have to wait for faster models. I can still shape things faster with rasp and file.
It probably goes up well beyond 250 fps, but not with these heavy arrows. 504 gr. I like heavy, lots of damage.
This model should definitely be sold. Bravo Joerg
Oktoberfest = Expensive, crowded, disgusting. 10 Euros for a liter of beer? Come on.
Your designs are always great and the way you present everything is awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Keep up the awesome work!
I would absolutely love to learn to build this awesome weapon! Are there blueprints, or perhaps a tutorial video?
Many reasons - in a nutshell: Because I don't want to.
Well, most modern crossbows no longer have a "stick", but arms made from composite material, and the string is in fact attached to excentric wheels called "cams". Just accept it. A crossbow is a muscle operated shooting device that has means to store the energy (lock and trigger) and does not have a tube like barrel. That is the German legal definition anyway. Why should it be important what elastic material stores the energy? Steel, wood, springs, compressed air, or rubber.
nice accuracy at distance, and dayum!!! that slingshot is a beautiful thing!!!
Another great video, thanks Jorg!
Great for survival/hunting. Thanks for sharing this vid Joerg!
This is probably the best thing you have made!
one of the coolest and slickest weapons you've made so far
Guten Abend Joerg! :)
Btw.. Der Bart wächst wohl für deinen Zomiefilm, was?! Auf den Streifen bin ich schon heiss alter!
He is so deadly and cuddly at the same time. Great juxtaposition of qualities!
Your laugh brightens up my day, whatever the weather. XD Thanks for the great quality content!!
I'm very impressed Joerg! Will you have pictures of the mini crossbow on the forum?
Very cool. You need to open a museum for all of you creations.
Shot 1400 45J+ rounds this weekend, got myself a blister on my index finger.
The aura created by Joerg's BEARD can actually be seen from space with the naked eye. Awesome!
1. Take razor.
2. Open trashcan.
3. Throw razor into opened trashcan.
4. Close trashcan.
5. Wait.
:)
I love the cross bow. The slingshot handle looks really nice
"Wise butts " . win . Keep it up joerg ! I check your channel nearly every day !
I love this channel! Excellent video! Keep the beard and do a xmas special as slingshot-santa!
I really like it when you shoot from a distance and we can see the entire flight!
This is cool, nice job Joerg.
Question: How many designs/iterations/models do you go through per project? How many attempts do you go through to get a project right? I'm guessing not many given how experience you've become in making slingshots after these years. It'd be interesting to see the process you go through when making a new slingshot.
A hit from this crossbow is not unlike meth. Sleep is impossible, your skin suffers badly, and eventually you die. Same story, the crossbow experience is just much, much quicker :)
Then look up wikipedia's definition for "bow".
"A bow is a flexible piece of material which shoots aerodynamic projectiles called arrows."
Why shouldn't rubber bands, attached to the cross piece, fit that definition? They are flexible pieces for sure.
You Sir are a genius ! You never fail to amaze me with your work .
Way to go Jorge! Nice crossbow.
Blister from too much slingshot practice this weekend.
I love the progress on that amazing beard :)
I hope they'll be Slingshot Channel T-Shirts. It should have Joerg with a pile of dead zombies and him saying, "Thanks..and bye bye!"
Cool do you got blueprints up
Mostly my weapons work OK on day 1, but then I optimize things for a day or two. My projects are simple and straight forward, so there is little wasted time.
Awsome work & craftsmanship. would it be more powerful if you used theraband black?
Creativity and persistance.
Still lovin' the beard. You rock it so hard! The crossbow is great too!
Beard is looking great! Somehow makes you even more badass.
just saying it right now, you created something that many big game hunters would really appreciate.
Keep growing the beard, Jorge!!!!
Make that crossbow as gorgeous as that slingshot.
Did you see my pump action crossbows? Basically enhancements of the chinese designs.
Loving your channel :-)
Hello Joerg !
Great videos, I love them all !
I am currently building this slingshot crossbow, but I can't quite figure the shape of the inside of the barrel ! (I even checked your slingshot forum !) I would love to see a "how to build" video !
Also, I was thinking about putting small plastic wire clamps lengthwise on the side of the barrel, in order to clamp a couple of spare ARROWS (not bolts, of course!).
I hope to hear from you soon !
Greetings from a fellow belgian slingshot lover !
Tschüss !
There are 3 layers to this crossbow the middle layer is the same thickness as the arrow. Sorry I can't explain it all its really hard but if you need help just come to my channel I'm happy to help:)
Thank you and keep on gowing this way you are the best
You define "legit crossbow" by mere technicalities. My definition has only one aspect: Lethality potential. I would even consider a crossbow as legit if it uses a garter belt to shoot arrows at deadly speed.
Yo, keep the beard, looks awesome. Also that is a superb little crossbow. Maybe one day you'll give out a few of your plans for these things
easily one of the coolest guys on youtube
Smaller, yes. But legit (= potentially lethal WITHOUT poison)?
SHG - ist das nicht kurz vor Hannover? Ziemlich weit von Oberfranken.
I thought of that of course! But I don't have some good skills in woodworking etc..
I couldn't make for exemple a slingshot with his expertise. Having a slingshot perfectly made by his hands would be so great! :)
He has so much talent!
The fletching is tightly guided. No spinning possible.
Depends on what your compairing it to. At max I've seen sling bows reatch upwards of 400 fps at best. Sometimes past that the more power is behind it or if the friction on them is low enough.
You quoted the Wikipedia article on crossbows to explain why what you were using is an arrow instead of a bolt. That entire article is about how crossbows are a bow laid horizontally across a stock. The word "bow" refers to the flexing of the stick, not the string. So you have a slingshot with a stock that fires arrows. I wasn't going to say anything, but you got technical about bolts vs. arrows, so now it's open season :)
Joerg your beard is coming in nicely! Keep it up! All of us bearded men are cheering for you!
I would totally pay money for one of those! Very cool!
I really don't see it now, but I no longer rule out ANYTHING.
Dude, you are awesome!!!
Nice Mini-Deadly Crossbow Joerg :)
Nice! I would love to see a comparison how well it fares against commercial crossbow.
Joerg, where did you get your engineering skills? Do you have any tips to achieve it or is it just a creative mind that is needed?
Joerg! Can you please do a tutorial and prints? This is a sweet little shooter.
can't wait to make one
The beard is awesome! Keep it growing!
I know romanianshadow, great guy with plenty of skills and courage.
Love your stuff man.
Nice! Any plans on how to make it?
