The world's smallest legit crossbow?

  • The team here at The Slingshot Channel wanted to make another small crossbow, after all these looong weapons we recently presented.
    The challenge: The smallest possible encapsulated (=safe) crossbow for 20" 2219 crossbow arrows. That's right, arrows, not bolts. (The difference: Arrows have fletching.)
    In Terry Pratchet's "Discworld" novels, there is a weapon he calls the "Spring-Gonne". Basically a length of steel tube with a spring that shoots steel bolts. Highly illegal in that universe! We wanted to make that weapon, but adapt it to rubber of course, and (as mentioned already) for fletched arrows.
    So we designed a crossbow that can "chamber" these arrows.
    It is not much larger than the arrow itself.
    We attached the strongest rubber that allows you to cock the weapon with the butt plate against your chest (very quick reloading that way). Eight bands of TBG, 3cm straight, per side. Total draw is about 150 lb.
    The tip protrudes, which not only allows for broadheads of any kind - but it also makes it possible to safely unload the weapon.
    Total weight is 650 gramms (1,5 lb) with the rubber installed (but w/o the arrow).
    The weapon shoots very accurately and is reasonably powerful, as shown in the video.
    We think this is a very legit weapon - ideal as a backup crossbow!
    A new handmade slingshot is shown as a bonus. The polyurethane finish is stunning. Here is a pdf with some tips how to replicate those results:

    Crossbows really don't need a stock, as there is very little recoil. Crossbows had no stock in medieval times. The stock was added by modern manufacturers so they resemble guns. This one is so light that a stock would only make it bulky.

    I will soon play myself, ten years after the apocalypse. I need to be thinner and bearded for that role. Lost a few pounds, but not nearly enough.

  • @Slingshotchannel
    @Slingshotchannel  10 років тому

    I no longer use rollers. The effect is small, but the bands tear very soon. It is better to just use more rubber.

  • @Slingshotchannel
    @Slingshotchannel  10 років тому

    It does have a cross, it is just very short. The rubber bands are attached to it.
    Crossbow = muscle operated, has a trigger, shoots projectiles, but does not have a tube like barrel

  • @Slingshotchannel
    @Slingshotchannel  10 років тому

    Crossbows are muscle operated. Your body strength is the energy source behind it. If you want power, you either have to be strong OR use mechanical cocking devices, like block and tackle setups.

    I made plenty of pistol crossbows already. This time I wanted to make the smallest one that shoots full size crossbow arrows.

    Picatinny rail is a possibility, for a red dot maybe. Buttstick is a bad idea, bulky and prevents the chest-cocking method.

    That is excellent. The problem with crossbows regarding their use in confined spaces is their span, and your design solves that problem brilliantly.

    It would be less powerful (but powerful enough for being lethal), BUT it weighs much, much less, and is extremely small in comparison. Most crossbows are huge and very heavy.

  • @Slingshotchannel

    Those 315 fps are probaby achievable with ridiculously lightweight arrows only. Try shooting the +500 gr 20" 2219s, and you will see how fast it REALLY goes.
    Seriously, those commercial crossbows have awesome power. Too much for my back yard anyway, as the bolts never last long. But they are very heavy and bulky. Plus I hate that most powerful ones can only be cocked with a harness.

  • @Slingshotchannel
    @Slingshotchannel  10 років тому

    The chest plate solves that issue. The pressure is spreaded over a wide area.

  • @Slingshotchannel
    @Slingshotchannel  10 років тому

    Many reasons - in a nutshell: Because I don't want to.

  • @Slingshotchannel
    @Slingshotchannel  10 років тому

    Well, most modern crossbows no longer have a "stick", but arms made from composite material, and the string is in fact attached to excentric wheels called "cams". Just accept it. A crossbow is a muscle operated shooting device that has means to store the energy (lock and trigger) and does not have a tube like barrel. That is the German legal definition anyway. Why should it be important what elastic material stores the energy? Steel, wood, springs, compressed air, or rubber.

    Question: How many designs/iterations/models do you go through per project? How many attempts do you go through to get a project right? I'm guessing not many given how experience you've become in making slingshots after these years. It'd be interesting to see the process you go through when making a new slingshot.

  • @Slingshotchannel
    @Slingshotchannel  10 років тому

    A hit from this crossbow is not unlike meth. Sleep is impossible, your skin suffers badly, and eventually you die. Same story, the crossbow experience is just much, much quicker :)

  • @Slingshotchannel
    @Slingshotchannel  10 років тому

    Then look up wikipedia's definition for "bow".
    "A bow is a flexible piece of material which shoots aerodynamic projectiles called arrows."
    Why shouldn't rubber bands, attached to the cross piece, fit that definition? They are flexible pieces for sure.

    Hello Joerg !
    Great videos, I love them all !
    I am currently building this slingshot crossbow, but I can't quite figure the shape of the inside of the barrel ! (I even checked your slingshot forum !) I would love to see a "how to build" video !
    Also, I was thinking about putting small plastic wire clamps lengthwise on the side of the barrel, in order to clamp a couple of spare ARROWS (not bolts, of course!).
    I hope to hear from you soon !
    Greetings from a fellow belgian slingshot lover !
    Tschüss !

    You define "legit crossbow" by mere technicalities. My definition has only one aspect: Lethality potential. I would even consider a crossbow as legit if it uses a garter belt to shoot arrows at deadly speed.

    Depends on what your compairing it to. At max I've seen sling bows reatch upwards of 400 fps at best. Sometimes past that the more power is behind it or if the friction on them is low enough.

  • @chrisjohnsonvan
    @chrisjohnsonvan 10 років тому

    You quoted the Wikipedia article on crossbows to explain why what you were using is an arrow instead of a bolt. That entire article is about how crossbows are a bow laid horizontally across a stock. The word "bow" refers to the flexing of the stick, not the string. So you have a slingshot with a stock that fires arrows. I wasn't going to say anything, but you got technical about bolts vs. arrows, so now it's open season :)
