Chopin. Raindrop Prelude Op. 28 No. 15. As with all his compositions, Chopin did not give the name to this one himself - rather it had been given to the piece by Chopin's lover, George Sand, while the two were staying at a huge Carthusian monastery in Majorca, an Island off the coast of Spain. According to legend, the monastery (being stuck between rocks and sea) allowed wind and rain inside, causing Chopin's already poor health to deteriorate. Chopin spent a lot of time listening to the repetitive drip-drip-drip of the rain outside, which is said to have inspired the repetitive Ab note throughout the piece. Hope you enjoy this touching performance by SPQ - I hope it's not raining wherever you are, and that you have a beautiful Thursday ♥
“Remember our promise” and “BELIEVE” are now etched into my mind every time I hear this masterpiece. A great work of art, now connected to two fantastic games.
What do you think of the effects - somehow managed to turn the falling notes into raindrops ;) I think it also unintentionally turned out to look somewhat Studio-Ghibli-esque, it's quite a nice audio-visual experience!
This piece always reminds me of my dear piano teacher Mrs Reid. I used to limp my way through it week after week, making mistakes in all the same places (as you can tell I wasn't exactly talented in the piano department). But Mrs Reid never ever once showed one ounce of irritation or displeasure. She was unfailingly encouraging and kind, and always had a supportive word no matter how badly the lesson went. She also showed me much empathy and support when I was going through a difficult time in my life. I was truly privileged to have her as a teacher and if I could be half as patient with my own students (I tutor - though not piano LOL) I'd be happy. She must be long, long gone by now, hope she's still playing in some other dimension and reaping the rewards of her kindness and compassion on earth. RIP Mrs Reid and thank you.
This is a very interesting story, however I’m glad that she was able to be put to rest knowing that she changed the life of many people for the better. Why do you think that you had a hard time learning to play the piano? Was it something specific? What to you tutor now?
A week ago today my Grandad passed away. This was playing in his room at the hospice when we found him and I couldn't bring myself to listen to it again until now. I'd been keeping it together fairly well and decided to brave a listen. I absolutely lost it as soon as the main melody hit. but sadness passes and good memories remain and I'm sure I'll be back here to listen quite often! I learnt so much from him, I'm going to continue doing my damn best for him. I miss you so much Grandad!
You gotta be very careful with the legato especially at 3:58 and that was very demanding for me to play this part while notes on the right hand. Also when you play this song for the first few times, it feels pretty awkward in your hands because of the position you have to play the notes, but you'll get used to it
Literally by far the best piece of advertisement to exist in my opinion. Take away the fact that it’s for a video game, that halo Believe ad series was phenomenal. Each part, with the human covenant war veterans, the museum, the making of the diorama, the explanation they give to all of it, it just makes you feel emotions, more so forces them out of you. I’ve showed that run of ads to people who’ve literally never played a single game of halo and know nothing about it, and each time the person I show is brought to some level of an emotional reaction, often confused because they don’t know why. The raw emotion, nostalgia, and artistry paired with devotion that went into those trailers will always keep them an entire level above any ad for any other thing to have had an ad ever.
It’s raining right now, and after maybe five minutes of getting lost in the sight of wind whipping raindrops off of trees, I get a notification for this video. Thank you, Rousseau. Truly breathtaking.
My mom used to play this for me and my siblings when we were kids. I'm 19 now and it has been a long time since she has found the time to play the piano. She played this piece like nobody else.
My brother often played this on his piano back when we all still lived at home and everytime I hear it, I think back to those bittersweet moments. Truly a beautiful, moving piece, gives me chills (and teary eyes) every time.
3 years ago, I tried the piano and really liked it, then after a year got a little bored but still played, then several months ago, I found this channel, and I am glad this existed, I have been inspired by you and your La Campanella, Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2 and 6, and Moonlight Sonata performance, and inspired my friend to play a few months ago. I am really glad you have played these and hope you're channel continues to keep on growing. I love this channel and the piano. And now every time I go to Costco, I always look for a piano on display and play Turkish March on that piano. You are the best, and I love classical music and so does my dad. I really want to play what you have played. I've even tried that glissando in Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2 and learned how to do it without injuring my hand too much. I've tried La Campanella and Moonlight Sonata 3rd movement because of you. Maybe in a few years I'll try and learn the entire thing. I've watched your videos so many times I can't remember the first video that was recommended to me, I think it was the top ten most difficult pieces. How do you pronounce the name of your channel?
Ive gotta say, this is one of my favorite piano pieces, and I've listened to quite a few versions and videos posted here on UA-cam. One thing I've always found fascinating with the piano, and all instruments for that matter, that two people can play the same song, the exact same way, even with the exact same instrument, and come out with a unique product. The way you're striking the keys, and the pacing at which you do it is more audibly pleasing to me than a lot of the other uploads of this same piece. Absolute beautiful job. Thank you.
Funnily enough this was the first song from Chopin I remember ever hearing and it was while I was watch a Bugs Bunny cartoon. My mom pointed out what it was to me like she often does whenever classical works would come up on TV. I can't help but credit her doing things like that for my love of the music now.
this piece is probably the first and only piece i've ever experienced...whatever any one would call this, but every time i listen to this i just have this...mental film playing. 0:00 - 1:43 a wide field, vivid green grass, strewn with large patches of various wildflowers, slight slopes here and there, a smallish building or two (shed like buildings i guess). 1:43 - 4:44 a gradually strengthening wind blows in, looking towards the wind, seeing dark clouds quickly covering the sky. 2:26 (and various other points with this impact of notes) bright flash of lightning, loud crash of thunder signals a sudden downpour of rain. try to find shelter in a close by shed, helping to cover mostly, with few dripping leaks. walls creak from the wind and rain audibly splatters but holds. 4:44 - 5:40 the wind calms, rain lightens to a misting, heading out to find light grey clouds, slowly drifting off to uncover a darker blue sky (few hours time pass) the field now has a shine and somewhat new vigor to it in a way. it might be weird but yeah...not much to really say about it other than that

If you play them on a piano, G# and Ab sound the same (they are called enharmonic equivalents). But an Db major chord is made of the note Db (root note), F (major third) and Ab (perfect fifth). You can’t use G# because Ab is the fifth degree of your scale, while G# would be the fourth degree (Gb) raise a tone sharp (which would be a very weird thing to use right ?) ! Here, the piece is in Db major so the notes are Db Eb F Gb Ab Bb C and back to Db so this is actually an Ab and not a G# ! Can you see why it wouldn’t make sense to use - Db Eb F Gb G# Bb C Db - instead ? As a rule of thumb, if you are using a mode of the major scale (or one of three minor scales), each note name should appear once and none twice. TL;DR If your music is tonal, you need to think about what the note represents whitin the key and the context to know which enharmonic to use ;)
I have heard many Chopin pieces. But somehow this is my favourite and the one which made me think about Chopin. The dark notes playing betweem them, that sad with crescendos is so magical. Up to the point where he sees some light, just a little.
I don’t if anyone will see this, but if you’re reading this and vacillating on the opportunity to learn this piece, please take this as a sign that you must. Playing this piece is endlessly challenging, insurmountably moving, and possibly the best experience of my life. It’s my mother’s favorite piece and I think its effect on small, intimate audiences along with the intoxicating, bittersweet ecstasy of its incomparably beautiful main theme make it perhaps - and I’ve considered this carefully - the best piece for a household.

Every time I see you post a Chopin piece, it makes me so happy. It reminds me of my favorite video game, Eternal Sonata, which is a huge reason why I love classical music today. It centers around the idea of a dream Chopin has on his deathbed, tells his life story between game chapters, and features him as a playable character facing moral quandaries in a fantasy world. It's weird, and I love it, and Chopin has a special place in my heart because of it, and I love seeing you play his pieces!
Not only are these videos super good quality, you are an incredible pianist. Even in the middle of a extremely difficult passage, there's style, and character. You are not showing off, and I respect that. This channel is incredibly inspiring, not just for piano, but for music itself.
I always wanted to learn this as a musician cause my favorite part of this song is the quiet yet dark tone of this song where it’s a little light between the parts which makes this one of the coolest piano songs ever 😆😆
It looks like starseed, tanning in dirt. It smells like hot stone, and tall grass. It tastes like spiced fruit, sweet and hot. It feels like solar winds, and solar chimes. It sounds like two brothers, chasing glass frogs in the sun.
As A Pianist that moved me to tears because I used to listen to this with my Cousin then he had cancer. I was just Chopin some food and when i came Bach home i saw this. I had to write this down on my Liszt as my top 10 favourite piano pieces.
Never realized till a couple minutes ago that this was used in both a trailer for Halo, and in the soundtrack for Signalis, which are probably my favorite franchise and singular game, respectively. Always wondered why BELIVE sounded so familiar to me when I watched it for the first time in a while a couple weeks ago.
2:25 - 5:00 literally have tears streaming down my face.... it is truly the most beautiful song... and with the war going right now. the emotion hits harder. truly shows going into and coming out of a storm, or a battlefield. which is why I think Halo used it in their commercials for Halo 3 which is actually where I discovered it.
It was raining today as my mom got surgery and I was thinking about this exact song. I was beyond amazed to see this notification pop up on my phone! Beautiful timing and a great performance.
This piece and esspecially the beginning is just breathtakingly beautiful. It brings me to tears everytime, i cant wait to learn this once i get a chance to play again
Absolutely gorgeous piece. It's just facinatingly gorgeous. It's like a mixture of happy, sad, angry, frustrating, and then once it gets to the end It's like learning to cope and understand with what you went through and still finding joy even through it.
2:26-2:39 is really touching. This is my favorite part from this etude. And 1 minute later THAT part strikes again. That is why this is my favorite Chopin etude.
This is such pure genius composition. I like a lot of music and listen to something all the time but one song I will never get tired of is this one. Probably my favorite song of all time and it won't ever change. It has so many phases to it and is so vivid. Chopin was magnificent.
I imagine this would be the ideal piece to listen to while I'm in the car taking a road trip to "who knows where" while the rain is pitter-pattering on the car window. You get this notion of depression but you feel so serene at the same time.
Thank you Mike! I am learning a lot from your channel. I know when we had to sell our house a few years ago, we had to sign an agreement to stay with an agent. Fortunately she was able to sell our house at the list price but she overlooked our contingency clause that the sellers need to find another place to live before the new owner can move in.
This is my favourite piece from chopin as it tells such a deep story from the melody. To those who are facing problems and hurdles in life, it will always get better some day, like how chopin did it at the end of this melody.

As A Pianist that moved me to tears because I used to listen to this with my Cousin then he had cancer.
I was just Chopin some food and when i came Bach home i saw this. I had to write this down on my Liszt as my top 10 favourite piano pieces.
Inside you there are two wolves:
"BELIEVE"
"REMEMBER OUR PROMISE"
When The Commando said "Remember our Promise" I BELIEVEd so hard.
Truly peak fiction
Those are not effects of water, those are joyful tears of Chopin because of Rousseau's great interpretation!!!👌👌👌
This was my crowning achievement during my years studying piano. I think I need to re-visit it and play it again ❤
Of my 7 years of studying classical music this was by far the most satisfying piece to learn and play by heart
A masterpiece. I heard someone play this in person and it was breathtaking
Wait this was in Halo? Why didn't I see that?
@@teslac0il1891 it was in a halo 3 ad called "believe"
Ah, I must have not seen any of the halo 3 ads.

It was raining today as my mom got surgery and I was thinking about this exact song. I was beyond amazed to see this notification pop up on my phone! Beautiful timing and a great performance.
it’s been 3 years i hope your mother is in perfect health now ! :)
Listened to this a while ago, came back to it recently only to realize how masterfully he played it, and I hope we can all appreciate it now
This piece and esspecially the beginning is just breathtakingly beautiful. It brings me to tears everytime, i cant wait to learn this once i get a chance to play again
Im gonna learn this and nothing will stop me. I promise.
I wish you the best of luck:)

i can't describe the beauty of this piece
Chopin is as people say it "hauntingly beautiful"❤️
so true !
Absolutely gorgeous piece. It's just facinatingly gorgeous. It's like a mixture of happy, sad, angry, frustrating, and then once it gets to the end It's like learning to cope and understand with what you went through and still finding joy even through it.
Can't believe the halo 3 trailer song got made into a full length song.
YES *B E L I E V E*

I should really check out his Chopin guy.
One of my favorite pieces since I was a kid. Thanks SPQ for the performance and Rosseau for uploading it!

The Pianist why? this is from the halo 3 ads.
@@gheebus A track in odst is called rain/ deference for darkness. I wanted to reference that.
I always cry to this piece for some reason... it just speaks to my soul like nothing else can...
remember our promise
2:26-2:39 is really touching. This is my favorite part from this etude. And 1 minute later THAT part strikes again. That is why this is my favorite Chopin etude.
I can't not listen to the middle section and not view Halo's 'Believe' ad in my head
This is such pure genius composition. I like a lot of music and listen to something all the time but one song I will never get tired of is this one. Probably my favorite song of all time and it won't ever change. It has so many phases to it and is so vivid. Chopin was magnificent.
This was impeccably played. Seriously, amazing job.

Props to you for keeping it nice and slow. Dope work!
there was a point when I was about 16 when I could play this. still one of my favorite pieces.
This is my favourite piece from chopin as it tells such a deep story from the melody. To those who are facing problems and hurdles in life, it will always get better some day, like how chopin did it at the end of this melody.

Omg, I echo the comment about being seven and sitting in the back of the car, listening to this piece. Such a self-indulgent piece of melancholia.
