Talking wild crow actually speaks to squirrel at bird feeder

  • A wild crow came to the bird feeder and found a big, fat squirrel feasting on the peanuts that were supposed to be for him. Squirrels and crows are enemies and never get along, especially when food is at stake, but instead of starting a fight, the crow did something unbelievable. He said "hello". Twice! He's a completely wild crow, but he can say hello in a voice that sounds much like a parrot. What's more, the crow actually understands that the word hello is a greeting.

This is an amazing and heart warming story that really begins in 2011. A nest of baby crows fell out of a tree and the attempt to return them was unsuccessful. The parents did not return for the crows and time was running out. They needed to be fed every few hours at that age and a decision was made to bring the crows to Dr. Kristy Hiltz, a veterinarian at Sherbrooke Heights Animal Hospital. She was known to treat any animal that needed help. Kristy and her family took on the job of raising five noisy and very hungry crows. This meant night time feedings, screaming demands for food every few hours and lots of cleaning.

Within two weeks the crows were able to fly. They began roosting in the trees outside and returning at sunrise for breakfast. Unfortunately, one of the five did not survive the early days and the family of five became four.

The four crows, the famous "Freds", became known in the neighbourhood for their friendliness and their mischief. They were called Russell Crow, Crow Magnon, Baby Fred, and Adventure Fred.
Kristy's family tried to teach them how to say "Fred" but instead, they actually learned to say "Hello". They greeted Kristy and the kids with this each time they came back for food. The crows were taught to find worms and eat berries from bushes. They were encouraged to find their own meals and were given less prepared food as time went on. Crows are highly social, surprisingly intelligent, and they even demonstrated a sense of humor and a protective nature towards the family. They captured everybody's hearts.

Amazingly, the Freds were able to join a family of wild crows that lived nearby. They became completely independent and even migrated south at the end of that summer. Kristy watched for the crows when spring came and she was thrilled to hear at least two talking crows at the bird feeder. Occasionally, a crow flying overhead would land in a nearby tree and say "hello". They would not take food from her anymore, but they would let her get closer than the truly wild crows would.

In 2018, Kristy's husband, Dave, put his GoPro out at the crow feeder as he occasionally does, to record the animals that come for the daily supply of peanuts. When he reviewed the footage, he was shocked to find that one of the Freds had perched beside a cheeky squirrel and spoken. Attempts at communication between animal species is extremely rare.

Kristy was also thrilled to see the adorable attempt at conversation caught on video. It is reassuring each time they speak because it tells Kristy that her crows are alive and well. It also tells her that they still remember the summer of 2011 and their human family.

The full story can be seen in the video: Rescued Baby Crows Return Each Spring To Say Hello
<a href="rumble.com/v30b0x-rescued-bab... rel=nofollow target=_blank>rumble.com/v30b0x-rescued-bab...

Every morning a crow sits on the street light outside my son's bedroom windows and makes the same noise as his mobile phone alarm! He moved out 2 years ago but the crow still comes and makes the alarm call noise. It always makes me smile.

Crows and ravens are absolutely incredible birds. I'm sure they're quite capable of MUCH MORE than we already give them credit for. Never understood the reputation as birds of so-called "bad" luck, which I consider complete and utter foolishness.

I've been feeding a big male Raven since last winter (the summer I don't see him). This month he brought his mate and child to eat, too.The father has two special calls - one for my dogs, and one for me. He's often tagged along on walks, and let me know when somebody else or animals are nearby. Brilliant, brilliant birds.

You are so right. We learned to recognize crow voices and different messages in the calls. Even crows that live half an hour away use different numbers of caws for similar messages. It seems like they have specific calls for specific families.

Thank you for posting this. I love to see when birds are helped and then allowed to return to their natural life----not kept as pets. I once raised a Mockingbird that was found on a sidewalk; he was so far gone he had ants already crawling on him. I named him "Eat More" because he was just a juvenile and we all feared he wouldn't eat enough and grow stronger. I wanted him to live a natural life and left my bedroom window open, hoping he would explore on his own. He would perch atop my bed's tall oak back board and eventually he started venturing outside. He would sit on my laundry line and beg for food, but soon "naturalized" himself and was gone for longer and longer periods of time. After a while, I thought he was gone for good. He surprised me by coming back one day, sitting in a tree near to the laundry line. He had his mate with him. He was introducing us, I am sure of it. I was SO HAPPY. Never saw him again.

I have a family of 4-5 crows in my backyard; the big shiny one (I assume) is Daddy as he has a deeper "caw" and seems to rule the entire group! HE RESPONDS TO ME when I talk to him! Which amazes me so much.... I'll say "goodmorning baby" and he'll make this sweet intimate grunt/croaky sound (not as loud as when he caws). Every time I say something, he waits, then responds quietly in a sound to me. The others are still a bit shy but the big Daddy crow comes close and likes when I talk to him. Crows are so adorable!

I feed the crows in the park near our house. I have chosen a flat, concrete ground for feeding site. I come there often every morning and night to feed them. It just takes 1 crow to see it and a murder of crows rush in to feed. I also give them water because it is hot where I am. They are Indian house crows which were brought in the desert and thrived because they are smart and adaptable. Every time I go outside, the crows would recognize me and fly over me or near me to catch my attention. I would say "hello" to them, hoping some day they would learn to speak. They also accompany me to the bus stop, flying from branch of trees, watching over me. I love these birds and just watching them make my day!

It’s actually quite normal for birds raised by humans to find their own kind and learn by watching them eat. Nature finds a way. My uncle had a tree service, and no wildlife rehabbers in our remote location, so he raised a lot of birds and squirrels for release. They do very well on their own in no time.

There are crows and squirrels peacefully feeding on the patio in my little suburban back yard as I write this. People "warned" me about both squirrels and crows when I first put out bird feeders years ago, but I get along with both species.
The squirrels and crows don't really hassle each other, but you can see that the big crows make the squirrels nervous. It's funny to watch the squirrels constantly looking sideways at the crows as they munch up the fallen birdseed.

@@godofthecripples1237 lol it's a natural human reaction.. when presented with something which they see as utterly positive and beautiful, they quickly get consumed with sadness due to them reflecting on the opposite: the injustices of the world that they now believe need to be eradicated. It's a bi-product of self-awareness. For 'knowing' is the curse which gives it all meaning. That is why the saying "ignorance is bliss" is so simple but true. Which in actuality, is the position which birds and the rest of the animal kingdom hold. As, most animals do not have the level of self awareness which we as humans do.. so in reality.. it's a burden of human existence. One which is self imposed by those who are way too empathetic for their own good. Because: Nature is brutal.. and they (animals) don't realize it. They're simply existing.

I bought a turkey call, which sounds like a crow. (I guess they don't get along) because of all the crows and Ravens I see where I go fishing every other day. I was immediately impressed by the crows intelligence.
They know my car and they know I will mimic them so they will fly over for a visit. I'll do whatever they do. If they caw twice, I'll caw twice and so forth. They've shown me that they can count up to seven and back down.
When I'm in my van they will fly around it counter clockwise and look at me through the window to see if I have one of them inside the van. Sometimes a huge flock will do this and scare my unsuspecting friends. The huge flock will fly away but they'll leave one spy to keep an eye on me and report back to them later. The "spy" will pretend it doesn't see me and is just minding its own business. When I quickly look at it, it will look away. If I turn my back to it, it will move to where it can see what I'm doing.
I never feed them but still they like to come around to interact. I can mimic them now without the call. My friends think I'm a bit crazy because I'll always talk with them if they come to visit. They are amazing!

Most humans don't give animals credit for how smart or intuitive they are.

Beautiful video and thank you for taking care of these crows and let them go wild again. I live in Devon UK and for the first time I've met carrion crows, the variety that prefers to eat from dead animals. They've got whitish beaks, can be quite large and they make the most peculiar sounds, sitting high in a tree. I stood glued to the ground and a passer by explained to me what this bird was. There's lots of predator birds here, with National Park Dartmoor close by.

I raised an Australian Raven that was nearly dead with ants eating him when we got him. The wife has parrots and she force fed him. He became very healthy but his wing was fractured. The wing became good and he was in great health . I loved him but he flew away , he was a beautiful bird very demanding so I became his slave . Spoilt him but he deserved it. Birds are are great but I've always had a soft spot for corvids .

That first bird sounds more like a raven than a crow.... I watched a raven in Houston try to repeat what someone was saying, make that same noise before every attempt to repeat . The raven bird is a pretty cool bird to watch fly they nose dive a lot, sight to see........

I remember about three years ago I had picked up a bird that had fallen out of it’s nest and (I think) broken it’s wing. I’m pretty sure it was male. I remember me and my dad had picked him up in a towel and walked him home, he was absolutely STARVING! We could feel his ribs, we gathered some worms out of the backyard and fed them to him, he seemed content for a while and then wanted more. The poor thing was literally starving. We fed him some more, and then gave him a warm bath, (his feathers were covered in dirt) and (DONT EVEN) I sung him a lullaby, I would think it would kind of work because y’know, birds? He’d recovered nicely, but was absolutely freezing to death. He would never have been able to fly if grown. Well, time for some sad bits. We took him to the vet about 2 weeks later, and got some bad news.
    He had died.
We mourned him for a while, but never forgot.
    Fly in peace lil guy.
