Thanks for making your videos. They are well made and fun to watch. Not only are you very knowledgeable about L6 Mercs. But you are a very good father and very patient. Your the man.
We made the same mistake in assembling the housing and not locating the upper Spring pin between the casting dogs. The position you showed in your video briefly is wrong - you can't dial it in until you put the Spring into the valley in the second casting.
Hey I got it mine running. It was all thanks to you. I was watching all the videos and picking up things here and there that were really helpful. It's running with the new controls, a new cdi electronics harness on both sides.
@@MerCSonL6 so it was a good time on the boat yesterdayfor the maiden voyage although I have some venting issues with the gas tank that I will need to figure out because it kept sucking primer bulb flat when I would run full throttle
@@MerCSonL6 I also have to loosen the bolt just a little bit on the throttle arm and grease the distributor a little bit more because it was sticking at idle just a little
Just did this on my 71 800 last week. Few mistakes here and there so I had to disassemble 3 times but finally got it! Wish I would’ve had this video. Your videos have saved me a couple times. Keep up the good work and sharing the great knowledge
Overall good video, I had a problem though. at time 13:40 when you slide the throttle piece down on the housing it is in the wrong position. I assembled everything off of that and when you put it back together and on the boat the timing is off about 25 degrees because the throttle piece was clocked wrong, also the idle adj plate will not fit back in position. Took me awhile to figure out what was happening there but I took some pictures of the way everything was before I took it apart and was able to get everything right. I'm guessing you must have run into that and forgot to mention it later. Thank you though, great videos and they helped me out a lot. Joe
Hello! I just rebuilt my distributor as per this video, I resued my disc and trigger assembly because it's still good. I did replace both bearings, cleaned and regreased everything. I am wondering what you mean by the throttle piece being in the wrong position? I put the distributor back on my motor, and I now have a no start. Any help is appreciated.
Great Video!!! As always! I think you made the same mistake I did though. You put the Spring on wrong without a Pre-Load. The Pin should go on the other side. You'll know once you go to set it up on the motor; I had to pull mine all apart again to fix it. lol But anyway - YOU ARE THE MAN!! :)
great job, wanderful info, and like to ask? is it possible to change a dist engine to the thunderbolt system, i have a 74merc 850 with the distributor which among other things very expensive.
It is possible with minimal fabrication. However, I've always went from thunderbolt to distributor ignitions systems in my conversions. Parts are easier to find whereas the thunderbolt has high and low speed coils within the distributor (impossible to find.)
Is there a known gap that the disc should be set at for when it passes under the pickup as the rotor shaft spins? Is a slight "scraping" sound what you want when you turn the rotor by hand and rotate the disc around through the pickup?
Should the disk rub at all while spinning the rotor. I have one that spins loose goosey, and one that I can feel a little resistance. Not sure which is correct
Thanks for knowledge and fun videos. I have 3 early 70's L-6, trying to get one to "talk" I know trying to diagnose an intermittent spark issue on the internet sounds crazy, but I am grasping for direction. Have new CDI trigger, switchbox and coil. Spark seems to come out of distributor cap, but only long enough to think you fixed something, then quits. spark always comes out of coil. Tried different cap, wires, new battery, plugs. Any insight or suggestions welcome.

A temp guage can be done. But you would have to be really good at welding cast aluminum. Inlines are manufactured to run cool/cold. If you see steam coming from the pee whole there is a problem. I agree, having the luxury of knowing your cylinder head temp at all times is great. I will heavily consider it. I would just to to modify a power head that will accept the lower temperatures. Newer models have thermostats that control cooling temperatures 🌡 whereas L6s do not. Son
