    Honestly this thing screams. Of course it's a little big for the 680lb. Cajun but it is rock solid. About to throw a 13.5 24p 3 blade on it because it spins the 17p 4 blade to over 7k like nothing. Son knows his stuff and is a good dude. He doesn't have to share his vast knowledge of these motors with everyone for free. Go try to find an outboard mechanic to work on one of these and if you do find a shop, refinance your house for when the bill comes. Instead of trying to be "that guy" who knows it all, say thanks man. Good info.

    I just picked up a 1977 1150 for $50.00 and thru your videos got it tested out to be a bad trigger. I picked up a 1979 115 that was missing a bunch of parts but had a good trigger swapped it and got it going. It is on my boat now and running good for $100.00. Oh had to rebuild the wiring harness also.

      I have a shift shaft seal leak and while I was investigating it i turned the shifter link cam loose and the whole shift bar came up and ou. Now it just spins free when I reinstall it. Is the problem deeper now?

    I am about to order a new trigger for my 1976 mercury 1150 l6. Near the end of this video, you try to start it after installing the new trigger; and it didn’t start. Why? Was it because the timing was a half-tooth off? I am nervous to spend the $360 for a new trigger and have the motor not start.

    Howdy, I’m back with another question. I got my new trigger installed. I removed the flywheel by the “8 bolts” instead of the “center bolt” like you did. I’m not sure how tight to tighten the 8 bolts. Do you think 100 foot pounds is tight enough? And should I do it in a star sequence or in a circle sequence when tightening? Thank you so much for your help and reply’s.

      Should be. Definitely a star sequence. When finished I would go through the star sequence one more time to make sure they are evenly seated. Son

    Just remove the 8 screws. Lift the flywheel off noting where the pointer is, I always set it at TDC so it is easy to remember. Then you can remove the three bolts. And if you remove the stator you could easily replace the belt if necessary.

    Son, I have a 1975 1500 and I have rebuilt carbs, made sure getting enough fuel, linked and synced, according to ur video. We even chatted a little about a misunderstanding I had about it. I got it all squared away and running however, when it's put into the water under a load, it goes ok a little then When full throttle just bogs out and won't go any faster. What do u suggest? Thanks in advance.

    Hey man need some help real bad. My 1977 Mercury 1500 just cranks up and just takes off. I was on the water the other day and the cables got stiff and the throttle was hung. Got home looked at it and the distributor wasn’t turning back to idle. I held the distributor at idle and started it up and it literally just takes off. Nothing I do keeps it from reviving up.

    • @MerCSonL6
      @MerCSonL6  3 роки тому

      Sounds like a timing issue. Have you checked? Should be around 6-7 BTDC. Let me know. Son

  • @thediplomasta5891
    @thediplomasta5891 2 роки тому +1

    If you have a belt driven distributor, do not pull the flywheel in the conventional way. This is one of the few models where you are actually supposed to unbolt the 8 bolts on top. You don't need to pull the spline apart unless you are replacing the belt. And even then, you will want to remove the stator first, which you can't do until the flywheel is off, so...vicious cycle. Make sure to mark every piece at TDC before disassembling.
    Replacing the trigger/pickup coil, is basically rebuilding the distributor, which sucks. So more power to ya, if you can get a bolt-on replacement. The current price for a new trigger coil assy is around $400, although I saw them on the ebay for $180. And be careful with the plastic rotor. It's $150 by itself. 😵 Suddenly, having to buy a new switchbox/powerpack (newer style motor) doesn't sound so bad now, does it? 🤣

    • @MerCSonL6
      @MerCSonL6  2 роки тому

      Lol.... I always pull the flywheel off. I had to realign the flywheel because someone messed with the bolts. It's not fun. Thanks for your info! Son
