Well made battle report! A great analysis on the whole event! Your army was beautiful and your strategy and tactics were helpful I was really happy I got to play against you! -Raff
Thanks for sharing, My family listened to your entire report while we were on a road trip. I've been playing Warhammer since the early 90s as a young lad and luckily had the opportunity to cultivate all things Warhammer with my twin boys (14 years of age) who have now been eagerly painting their Skaven and Empire forces. I do say admittedly that my one son grimaced and shook his head at your narrow victory over the rat folk.
Absolutely the best game analysis to be found online. The Chaos Gods are in the details. Of course, comments such as "epic pillow fight" keeps one's interest as well! Well done on the 2nd place ranking as well!
This has rapidly become one of my favourite channels, and another score with this video. Makes this ex WFB player wonder about getting them back on the table, esp as London based!
There are quite a few players that meet in central London as well as a few clubs such as SELWG in south east London (Catford) where we still play. Luke, Simon and I are running the London Legends GT at the end of April and although it’s currently sold out, if you are around you can always pop in and say hello and wet your fantasy appetite!
Local breton lad jumps over to Naggarond, comes second and krumps various lads who joust for a living! Congrats and Sigmar's blessing from the Empire, mighty duke(or punk)!
It's good to see my Ogres performing well. I started that army in 7th edition because everyone told me it couldn't be done, and then 8th edition came along with it's changes to how monstrous infantry worked, and over night I became a force to be reckoned with. I can't wait for the return of the old world😁
Dr Blaxill, I love your videos! I played 8th ed VC for a while and, while I can't imagine ever playing fantasy again, I can't get enough of your batreps.
Thanks. During my long hiatus between when I played at school and got back into the game, I also only absorbed the game vicariously. But the interest never died, even then.
This is excellent. Five battle reports in one video is a real treat. As an old school Bretonnian player formerly resident of the UK but long since settled in Ontario, there were many relatable delights. I've also been relishing your coverage of Warhammer The Old World and loved your thought-provoking discussion with the Bard.
Thank you. Its so nice to have someone that Can play older editions in there area acknowledge that it doesn't work in a lot of places. It actually on works a few places in the world. I have had hundreds of people online tell me just because GW does not support it does not mean you cant play. Where I live that is exactly what it means. So thanks again.
Exactly. Except in a few big cities, and occasional holdout areas where there are a group of very close friends whose life circumstances remain similar, it is hard to play an unsupported game.
Thank you - this was very entertaining and insightful too. I've never played WHF and just about to jump into TOW. I'm very excited to finally have an opportunity to build/ paint and play a Bretonnia army.
There are many people like you who are learning the game for the first time. While there are changes, it's absolutely still the real thing and you could probably learn older editions if you wanted to later on (although that's a boutique occupation)
I'd love to - if I can achieve a modicum of competence with TOW! (I've been admiring the game from a far since the late 80s). I look forward to more of your videos - they provide an excellent summary of strategy and tactics - which is so useful in understanding the nuts and bolts of the game, no matter the edition! @@DrBlaxill
Thanks for making this. It was extremely enjoyable and I watched to the end. One thing about the lack of play for unsupported games which applies to my local area but may be common elsewhere: Most games are played at the local store and they do not welcome games that they are not able to sell. If they do have a spare unused table you might get to use it, but you will be last in line and sure to be chased off the minute someone needs space to play Magic. This is why unsupported games tend to become invisible.
Absolutely. You make a good point, and I have become very interested in the experience of what gaming with an unsupported system is like elsewhere. There are many extremely strong headwinds that one has to sail into to keep going. The oft-made 'well nobody says you can't still play it' argument that was often made when they killed it was of course technically correct, but in practice did not really work like that!
Fantastic batreps. I must say, your flavorful comments and explanations really gets you feeling like you've been a part of the battle or at the very least witnessed it first hand. These take me back and fills the void that Sustainable Center, Mr. Malorian, and Once Bitten left when they stopped making theirs. Please keep these flowing. I'm one of those old time tournament goers that left the game 10 years ago and haven't played since. I have high hopes for old world

And lastly, I’m very excited for the lance formation, and I am hoping it is superior to highways of Knights (and it seems to be). I loved it in the past, and it seems they nailed it here. I can’t wait to crash a lance of ten Grail Knights headlong into whatever is unlucky enough to meet them, likely my best friend’s Longbeards! And as much as I adore narrative Warhammer, I’m also hoping the tournament scene sees at least a small revival. I’m very much excited to dig deep into the systems and math of the game. That’s where I really get into the game. I want to understand every dice roll, every time I cast, shoot or charge a unit, I want to know statistically exactly what the average outcome of any interaction should be. I’ve played a lot of WHFB over the decades, and I spent even more time studying the math that makes the game what it is. That’s probably a sad indictment of who I am as a person, but I’ll take it.

Narrated perfectly, along with the pictures it actually felt like I was watching that game unfold in person. I hope I get to play against your Brets someday in The Old World.
Thanks. Exactly- for those who have been to tournaments I think it is interesting from a 'player's eye' POV. The dynamics of 5 games with the same army, and also (in a small way) the tournament as a travel story.
This was just a great watch, start to finish. Thanks for sharing your adventures. Also, GW should give you a commission as this is a nice little sales piece for the Bretonnia faction

Lovely to see some Skaven and Ogres showing up! As a player of both, I've definitely missed their distinctive brands of fun in the uk-based tournament reports.
I thought that for years, but then Drew put me right. The Bretonnian magic items specifically say in the book that the lance is used in all combat rounds, although the charging strength bonus applies only on the first. Which is very bizarre.

I can only pray to the Lady that the doctor continues his artistry with the newest rendition of Warhammer rules. Thankfully, MalleusHumbug P.S. If this video doesn’t inspire the folks to play Bretonnia, then nothing will.
Congrats on your play here. Something I'm bin the habit of is to always line up my charging units so they can go forward in to open space and so wheel left or right. I spy that on a few occasions, such as at 13:55 your red bus wouldn't be able to charge something behind that middle hill. Playing against you, id have put one of the knight buses forward and then angled and forcing you to use chaff to block my charge against you
I did quite well with a +9 comp score with my dwarfs. Seeking the old +3 for no duplicates makes for really interesting list building. My general was a Master engineer and I even took a bolt thrower!
In the British scene, we have a player (a magnificent painter too) who has done well with Dwarfs with highlander and a high + comp in the last few years
>small local cells >doesn't care two hoots about playing an unsupported game As a Canadian Fantasy player I can tell you the latter is no luxury I get to enjoy. One either knows several rule sets, or one doesn't play many games. The players are there but they are spread out as far and wide as this country.
I was asking TCW about allowing the interpretation on eefl which means a pivot to within 1” is allowed even if you can’t charge but TWC deliberately allow railroading because random movement is pretty strong.
I am very into the painting side, you can see my Insta here (its mainly Chaos though) instagram.com/oldhammer_powermetal_painting/ With my Bretonnians, its a slightly more complex story. About 50% of my whole collection is me from scratch, but the other 50% is an upcycled version of an army I purchased from another person many years ago that was already so well painted it would have been silly (and I might say even disrespectful to his work) to have stripped them so they got touched up. My own later additions imitated his slightly more conservative/historical style quite well and the whole thing is pretty seemless now. So it is my army, but its also his too. My own instinct is to go much more wild with colour (the unicorns are my full on 80s style) so having this guiding hand helped me produce an army that is a quite different style to my chaos.
@@DrBlaxill Ah yes, the Chaos army you have is probably the best-looking army I've seen overall. There's someone with a beautiful Tzeentch army on Instagram, but it's your combination of old rare models, the paint schemes, and retro banners that make it the top one army for me. It's the army of dreams for someone who grew up watching old cartoons, cheesy sci-fi/fantasy movies, and collecting action figures. I plan to steal your paint schemes for my first Warhammer army later this month.
Also in the Zzzzap rule from the Doomwheel each bolt is resolved separately, so once the first bolt kills the unicorn, the next, and possibly 3rd, can go for the pegadin 😮
1:24:00 Tournament play is it's own beast but even then I prefer to play by intention. The ogre play I think intended that if you got the charge in with your units he would be able to flank charge. If the actual position ends up dubious but only a small difference in position is needed I'm ok with conceding the favourable play to them. Here it's awkward that if you only got one unit in it would clearly be a flank charge and that might be what he expected. but actually getting one and not both or none is less than 50% for a 7 and 8" charge
Yes- very perceptive, you are quite right. However there is also another inherent difficulty here- playing by intension is great when articulated in advance- and sometimes part of the game is spotting stuff and so one is incentivised to keep quiet to not give the plan away. In this case, if he had wanted to lure me into a situation where I got flanked by the Mournfang, he would have been disadvantaged to tell me. Likewise, I also had an incentive to not state the double overun as he might have fled with his bulls against the second charge and left me in a pickle. A tight situation- and made harder by trays and terrain! As I recall in this case, I think I was prepared to punt on something that felt 50/50 ish because the matchup felt loaded against me.
@@DrBlaxill A great way to train is to openly discuss what you're thinking and that's may for amazingly fun games for me. I see 8th as a trading game and it should be apparent to an experienced player what the bait/ bait taken is. It's then a matter of playing chicken with the dice gods. I suppose stating intention removes the ambiguity. "I'm positioning these two units so that if you get lucky and overrun into one I can flank with the other" or "I'm 8.5 inches from the front of my chaff" helps if you're not comfy with the measuring skills of your opponent
Dr. Blaxill, I have a couple of questions. Are you going to rebase your armies for the Old World? Also, do you think we should refer to the Old World as 9th edition? Your Bretonnian army is painted beautifully!
1. No- I am far too historically minded for that. I want backwards compatibility with all old editions. I wish they hadn't changed the bases! 2. 9th Edition? Hmmm- interesting! Philosophically, I probably would be in favour of calling it that- as it is just PR spin to pretend its a new game. What it really is is the latest iteration of a much greater gaming system. However, I would like to pay due respect to the 9th Age, who of course made some (excellent) fan rules during the dead times. Still, '9th Edition' and '9th Age' are different enough. One thing is clear though- it should also be called 'Warhammer Fantasy'. AND also- plain 'Warhammer'. That term does not mean 40k, which as far as I am concerned is a spin off game with its own name!
@@DrBlaxill Very interesting. I think I'm going to keep my bases on the old system sizes too. I'll try to come up with a clever solution to the bigger base rules. I've seen some movement trays online which have section dividers which should solve the base dilemma. However, these dividers will only be a few millimeters wide, which is quite small and might not work as good as theorized. I think a 3d printed movement tray solution might be the sturdiest / easiest. I think 9th Edition Warhammer is fair, while also paying respect to the 9th Age folks. I'll be interested how the community eventually settles this.
I'm using magnetised spacer movement bases for my existing armies. I agree it is verb much marketing not calling it 9th edition. 40K used to have a lot of game mechanics in common with WFB, but has moved a long way away now.
this really goes to show how incredibly annoying chaff can be, i really find this game mechanic very frustrating to play against and hope it won't be so prevalent and feasible in the Old World. Nothing personal of course, i enjoyed the vid and the review at the end. Thanks, looking very much forward to your content on the Old World soooooonnnn :D
For me, chaff is a good counter for deathstar units which some people also dislike. It also means you need to invest in shooting and/or magic to getting rid of it meaning a chance of protection from overpowered spells or cannons (both of which some people also dislike). However, an improved mechanic would be nice.
Hey! I love rhe DarkOmen soundtrack. Im wanting to run a 'black' Bretonnian themed army with Black Grail Knights at the center. What are your suggestions for going down this route? Fallen Mousillon essentially. Thinking i could mix in some undead but want to run them with bretonnian rules. Am i taking this too far?😅 Thanks!
I toyed with that idea. I can see a few advantages and probably it would be better for getting clicks and would please UA-cam algo. However, I think having them together enables representation of the wider context that these occured as a series of games across a tournament, and also to add my little Intro and closing thoughts.
Do you not worry about getting threw airport security with your miniatures in your hand luggage ? did they open it up and say 'what's all this then sir ? ?' Just asking as I have to do exactly that in 9 days time. Europe mainland to UK.
I should have mentioned that! On the UK side they found it amusing and knew (sort of) what it was. On the Canadian side they looked at it with suspicion, scanned it, and let me go. Basically you will be pulled over 100% in security, but its easy enough to explain that they are painted toy soldiers and fragile.
@@DrBlaxill When I go through airport security with by large backpack with metal shelves full of minis at the airport I'm going to put a print out of the Warhammer Website with URL in with the minis so they can see what it is.
I like and play both, but find 8th to be a more fluid game than 6th and more agreeable for faster tournament play (due to premeasuring as much as anything else). I also prefer the magic system in it. 6th is great though, and has its own charms.
Bertrand, Hugo, and Gui? For me, I would try and get hold of some of the 90s monopose plastics (2 variants in box) and even a few metal perry ones to go with those. I've not seen them paired with the 6th ed bowmen before (for 6th ed did not include the BoB sadly) but they might look nice.
@@DrBlaxillhave you seen someone run Black Grail Knights before Doc? I’ve come across a stat line from 6th (allegedly) that puts them at 35pts a head. 10 for musician, 20 for the banner, 20 for the champion, and a slew of magical benefits. Ethereal, causes fear, immune to psyc, take damage from losing a fight instead of fleeing. I’m tinkering together a Mousillon force for 6th Ed with Grave Guard, a necromancer, and the Grail Knights as an “Ally’s” choice, even though Mousillon is still Bretonnian, so it’s not technically breaking the ally rule. Thoughts? Has anyone taken them in your time?
I'm fortunate in having two sealed blisters of Bertrand, Gui and Hugh. I also have about 10 of the old metal squire archers. Amazing what could be bought at the "End Times"
@@scoticvsgossage9378 Not that I have seen, but I have played mainly 8th edition. I poke an occasional (admiring) head into the 6th ed room but know less about the culture and meta of it. In 6th ed they added rules from time to time in WD, and I daresay that these Black Grail Knights are from there? What the status of those 'added units' (which of course include even something as iconic as the Steam Tank) was in competitive 6th I am not sure Although to all extent, who cares? Black Grail knights are cool (I remember them from Dark Omen) and given there were some rules, I'd say go ahead!

was just wondering where these have gone!!! :)
Man Skaven dominated the scene on the west coast
Intriguing! I'm not surprised, on paper, that there were metals.skaven dominated. Ive never been in any of them,. however.
@@DrBlaxill last fantasy tourniment i went to there was over 50% Skaven and most people running double hellpit other grows weaponry.
That Soulgrinder looks so terrifying. Only Brettonian knights would have the steel required to charge such a beast!
That model looks like the final boss in the last episode of the classic Doom video game
00:08:20 How about the demographic shift in Canada? It's the first Western country set to become minority White within a decade.
>small local cells
>doesn't care two hoots about playing an unsupported game
As a Canadian Fantasy player I can tell you the latter is no luxury I get to enjoy. One either knows several rule sets, or one doesn't play many games. The players are there but they are spread out as far and wide as this country.
Yes indeed- I came to appreciate that during my trip- the Toronto group are perhaps a slight exception to that general rule.
ETC rules forbid railroading and allow for virtual pivots. It was standard rule in most tournaments 10 years ago
Interesting. Triple Crown don't allow it, so that's the system we've used in the last 5 years.
I was asking TCW about allowing the interpretation on eefl which means a pivot to within 1” is allowed even if you can’t charge but TWC deliberately allow railroading because random movement is pretty strong.
I believe Canada has good British style tea.
Beautifully painted army! Did you do all this impressive work yourself, or did you have some punk handle the brushes for you?
I am very into the painting side, you can see my Insta here (its mainly Chaos though) instagram.com/oldhammer_powermetal_painting/
With my Bretonnians, its a slightly more complex story.
I plan to steal your paint schemes for my first Warhammer army later this month.
great comentary. love to see some Skaven. Though the Doomwheel does not have no armour save on the lightening.... :) from Cirenblight
Also in the Zzzzap rule from the Doomwheel each bolt is resolved separately, so once the first bolt kills the unicorn, the next, and possibly 3rd, can go for the pegadin 😮
@@peteb3131 to be honest I think part of the fun of Skaven is not knowing entirely what they do, lol!
Its also why I prefer movement trays with a very thin lip
Great video! Will you be playing TOW?
ok im watching game 3 and cant stop laughing that is fantasy at it finest
Absolutely amazingly painted army full of 5th edition metal goodness. The only thing I am not a big fan of are the banners.
Many people have been inspired by the Black Grail from Dark Omen!
The banner on that knight unit is that from the Carcassonne box?
😀
So let it be written, so let it be done...
Any place to see all your flags up close in profile side pics?
No Green Knight this time!
You should have given out 5 parts one with each battle, do that next time
Haha, I binged too, but it's not exactly Dr Luke's fault if we can't exercise the necessary self control to watch them one at a time!
Just asking as I have to do exactly that in 9 days time.
Out of interest why do you prefer 8th to 6th?
I like and play both, but find 8th to be a more fluid game than 6th and more agreeable for faster tournament play (due to premeasuring as much as anything else). I also prefer the magic system in it. 6th is great though, and has its own charms.
Im agonising whether to get the Bret army box. The reason - i have the bowmen of Bergerac and want to see them in a bowman unit….
What the status of those 'added units' (which of course include even something as iconic as the Steam Tank) was in competitive 6th I am not sure
Although to all extent, who cares? Black Grail knights are cool (I remember them from Dark Omen) and given there were some rules, I'd say go ahead!
I hope you told Steve to stop cheating lol
