Awesome that you were able to do some shopping while on vacation. Congratulations on finding some records you were looking for. Simple Minds live looks awesome. Peter Murphy record setlist sounds awesome; too bad about the sound quality, but seems like it's still worth hearing. When I lived in Germany in the 1980s some of the record stores displayed just the jacket with the record behind the counter. I was thinking that, for records that they have several copies of it, it saves some space in the bins. You don't have to thumb through 20 copies of the same record. Thanks for showing the records!
I just remembered that my sister was very confused when she went to England the first time and found out that the records were behind the counter and just the jackets were in the bins. It seems odd from a Norther American perspective. It was a great trip, but the two weeks went too fast 😞
I looked up Strange Fruit to remind myself that it is a UK label.. Pleased to find out that John Peel himself, along with Clive Selwood started the label back in '86. Nice buy on "Mighty Like A Rose".. Looks like an Italian pressing ( all of mine sound good ) and Cosmic Thing on German wax is pretty cool !
I lucked out on a few things, even with the exchange rate. It would have been cheaper to save the airfare and order them onl;ine, but that would have been way less fun.
Looks like a successful trip! I often wonder how terribly behaved I'd be shopping for records internationally (even in Canada!). Glad it was a good trip... see you soon Brian!
Brian, good to see that you made it back to your home turf without any major glitches. I'm willing to bet that the Rock Bottom music store is named in honor of Robert Wyatt's classic album, ''Rock Bottom''. There is a store in Austin, Texas called ''End Of An Ear'' which alludes to the title of a different Wyatt album, '' The End Of An Ear''. Lots of VC members, praise their selection. I was expecting to see a King Crimson purchase. Tubeway Army/ Gary Numan was a great score.
Hey, thanks for the Robert Wyatt trivia. There is a store in Toronto called She Said Boom, which was "named after the song She Said Boom written by Caroline Azar performed by the Toronto band Fifth Column." I didn't know that until I read it on their webpage. I considered one King Crimson record (Music Is Our Friend), but it was a bit pricey. Maybe that was also a mistake 🙂
Sounds like a great vacation Brian. You show remarkable restraint, but then again you are very selective in your choices which is admirable. That Peel session would have grabbed my action as well. Those European prices drive me mostly to the bargain bins. At least you didn’t have to buy a new piece of luggage to bring your souvenirs home like I did last year 😀. See you in Boston. Cheers.
I am sure Cecile would have something to say if I bought a second piece of luggage! But, that is a really great idea for next time. In truth, I brought too many clothes, so I will cut it down next time to ensure I have more space!
You got the Peter Murphy!! 🎉 That’s great Brian, my favs on there are Magazine, Pere Ubu and Iggy covers, excellent album and great circumstances…..right in front of you! Love your other pick ups, gold cover Numan Peel sessions, haven’t seen that before. Rock Bottom sounds great, I’ll definitely check that one out. Shame you didn’t get to Simple Minds. Mike
And, I only had to fly to Italy to find the Peter Murphy. Discogs would have been cheaper! I have never seen Simple Minds, which is a miss on my part 😔
Five years ago I went to Italy for the first time, and I couldn't avoid visiting at least a couple record stores, so I did that and brought to Brazil many cd's that I found on sale at Contempo Records (Firenze). Yes, it was just before I restart collecting vinyl, and I'm glad about it because their prices are high and I would be broke for the rest of my vacation :)
The only problem with this trip was the expense. Sure, the food and culture were amazing, but think of all of the records I could have bought if I had used the airfare in a few record stores! Still, it was pretty awesome.
That Morrissey album is the legendary free gig if you wore a smiths t shirt in Wolverhampton and was his first solo gig backed by all the smiths except Johnny Marr. - up the road from me and YES I was there !! Amazing day - the town was covered in flowers and smiths t shirted teenagers ❤🎉🎉
It is hard to keep up especially when you are on vacation. Sometimes you just have to start anew. I stayed with Elvis his entire career but I can understand your departure as he never did eclipse his early recordings. I loved your record store stories.
After Mighty Like A Rose the only thing I have is Momofuku on CD. I think I played it once. I keep thinking that I should listen to some of his later work. Maybe there is something I would like.
Making your own Obi strip is quite a nifty presentation move for a shop. A double peel is a good buy. Its funny how some things are rare elsewhere. That Costello album I've seen here a few times. Its also funny how decent stuff in in the discount bin abroad! I have mixed feelings about low quality recordings being put onto vinyl, but hey if you're a fan and you want it. Great to get something you have been looking for out there 👍
They certainly went all out with the home-made Obi. The only thing better would be to have made them bilingual. That might be too much to ask for. 🙂 I have avoided bootlegs for years, but with the Smiths and Morrissey, I can be persuaded! Sometimes, buying them is the wrong move. This one, after two listens now, is very interesting and worth the price, I think 👍
Welcome back Brian! Gary Numan Peel session I looked up on discogs and it’s rare and pricey. I would consider that one a grail piece. That B-52’s dance this mess around is a 30 dollar record all day I think, great pickup! Elvis Costello, Morrissey , Peter Murphy are stellar picks. Birthday party is represented on my want list but boys next door I was not aware of so will check it out.
Wow, I also found a Simple Minds album during my "combined" Canada Day + 4th of July mini-vacation in Denver! The conundrum is always...do I go sightseeing in the morning and shop in the afternoon? Or vice versa? Of all the ones you visited, the one I put on my to-do list is Transmission, although it looks like a bit of a trek coming from Termini station. Might actually visit before the end of the year. Good finds!
Nice finds. That Wolverhampton gig was legendary in the UK, it made the national news as Moz was at the height of his fame, 'Suedehead had gone in at number 2 a few months earlier. It was a free gig and you could only get i if you wore a Smith's T-Shirt. Its quite a small venue, I think he did it because he knew it would get national exposure, he spent the whole gig hugging stage invaders..I'm still looking for The Smiths 'Thank y|our Lucky Stars' bootleg...which I'm starting to think doesnt exist on vinyl..its absolutely phonomenal.
'Thank your Lucky Stars' has been on my list for a while, but I have come up empty. I saw Moz in 91 here in Toronto, and the stage invaders were legion. One after another, they were removed from the stage. I'm not sure if they were allowed to be reseated or if they were kicked out. It was fascinating to watch.
I have never heard of Thomas Leer, someone new. Don’t you hate it when you’re on a trip you eventually find out the first place was the best place. Been there, done it lol. That place where everything was dumped and scattered around the store, I just don’t think I would have the patience Brian. Nice group of records. I always loved the stuff I bought from other countries, they were extra special to me
That store was challenging. There are two stores in Toronto that I avoid for similar reasons. Surely, it has got to impact revenues. You can't buy what you can't find 🙂
Welcome home!!!! I should’ve made you an ABBA video!! Shame about Rick Bottom Records. This is a nice vid to hear about your experiences and what you bought. I’ve never heard of Thomas Leer. Uh-oh, Ben Rankins territory. That Peter Murphy sounds fun.
Great to have you back! That’s definitely not a favorable exchange rate. Rock Bottom put a lot of time and effort into those “obi” strips. I’ve never seen the Elvis Costello title. I’ll have to add that on my want list. Great $ for Cosmic Thing.
Good luck finding that Elvis record! As I said, it took me a while 🙂 It turns out that the countries where the Canadian dollar are worth the most are Hungary, Romania, Thailand, and Argentina. Time to book my tickets 🙃
Nice selection, Brian! I’d be keen to pick up a copy of Door Door. In general, I don’t buy new releases and prefer digging for 2nd hand records. Florence is such a great city and you‘ve inspired me to take a trip to Rome… still never been. I’m thinking next Easter 🙂
Good score on Mighty Like A Rose. Seen it a couple times but I actually decided on a limited promo hardback CD instead to have. I used to have that boys Next Door and it’s a great press.
Welcome back Brian. Sounds like a wonderful vacation. I admit my opinion of Elvis Costello is quite bizarre. I absolutely love his first three albums, then nothing beyond that. Not sure why I don't like his material from 1980 on. Anyway, nice to see you back with some cool records to add to your collection.
Very nice Brian. Always fun to pick up vinyl overseas...and just like home the key is not to hesitate! Italy is amazing, and thanks again for all your videos and sharing a piece of your trip with the VC 😎🎶
Brian, I have a cassette of that Elvis Costello album. Finding a vinyl copy would be nice. I almost saw Peter Murphy along with Tom Verlaine in the early 1990's in a small club near my house, but plans fell apart at the last minute. Take care, Chris
Tom Verlaine and Peter Murphy on the same bill would have been amazing! Too bad the plans didn't work out. I had tickets for the last planned Bauhaus tour, and it was cancelled. Bummer!
Welcone back Brian! Super cool Numan peel sessions. Ive never seen that one before either. Also a fan of Peel sessions. Dont feel too bad I went to Florence and never bought anything actually! I did all my Italian pick ups in Rome. Ironic that you got a Simple Minds live album :) Radiation records is legenday! Great reissues label for rare punk etc.
@@EmbryonicRobot check out their label releases sometime - you might dig some of the early UK punk, etc. they have reissued. I must have about 6- 7 radiation releases now. Recently got Teenage Jesus and the Jerks (old Lydia Lunch band) on Radiation reissue.

Like you said, it's pretty much Jim Kerr and Charlie Burchill is all that's left. I always liked Charlie's guitar style. Nice B52's collection, and like you I've never seen it before. I like that Radiation Records logo. "Right in front of my nose was Peter Murphy"..."The reviews of this are quite interesting"...🤠
Hi Mike - I hope you can find that Simple Minds. I was in a store today and I was wondering if the had it, but they did not. Finally got the Peter Murphy, but I had to fly to Italy to make it happen!
I never hold back when I see something I want and can afford. If I spend all the money allotted I just don’t go to the other stores. I do like Elvis Costello but I stopped at Imperial Bedroom. I would jump all over the Gary Numan Peel Sessions. When I was in England in the 70’s every store all the album covers were empty and you went to the counter to get the record. Also nothing was shrink wrapped.
Your Euro pain is the same as my Canadian/Australian dollar exchange rate pain. I always hesitate at the start and then get back home and think about all of the things I picked up and put back down again. Love a Peel Session. I think I'm a bit like you with Elvis. A casual fan, but seem to have quite few of his records. Dance This Mess Around on 12"...no! What is it an EP? Boys Next Door is good but a different band to what they became. I think Rowland only plays on one side. B I think. Hurt is now owned by Johnny Cash. better than the original....more country ha, ha! Cheers...SMG
I guess the AUD - Euro conversion would be even worse. Don't go to Europe. Dance This Mess Around is a comp of 11 big hits! You know, as much as I love Cash's Hurt, I hate the distortion at the end. What were they thinking! It makes me crazy.
@@EmbryonicRobot Oh, I think I misunderstood what the B52's thing is because I'm sure Dance This Mess Around was a single and probably didn't actually pick up that what you had was a comp. I'm a bit slow sometimes. You're a complicated individual. I like the distortion.
It's probably Viva Hate, but a really excellent album is the Bona Drag comp, because it pulls together some singles, non-album singles, and b-sides. It is fabulous.
Hi Brian. I posted a comment here just after you posted your video which has disappeared. It's very annoying when that happens ... I enjoyed your videos from Italy. You picked up some good records, despite problems with the exchange rate. Was Ultravox's John Peel Session EP a victim of the exchange rate? ... Hi Carl - Radiation Records had quite a few pressings from the Radiation label, so I made that connection. I assume they are related.
I wish someone would invent a time machine so I could go back and go to that show.
I think I did OK, despite the things I missed. Next time, I will not hold back. I will wear out my credit card 🙂
Good finds!
Or, shopping all day, perhaps? Transmission would make a good destination. I'll be looser with the cash during my next European vacation!
Oh no, not ABBA. Maybe some day, I will return to Rick Bottom records. Yes, there was Ben Rankins territory in that video!
Sounds awesome. I hope you find some good stores if you take a trip to Rome!
Good score on Mighty Like A Rose. Seen it a couple times but I actually decided on a limited promo hardback CD instead to have. I used to have that boys Next Door and it’s a great press.
I still haven’t played the Elvis, but it is in the pile. Too many records, I guess 😶
To be fair, his first three albums are his best!
Very nice Brian. Always fun to pick up vinyl overseas...and just like home the key is not to hesitate! Italy is amazing, and thanks again for all your videos and sharing a piece of your trip with the VC 😎🎶
I will try not to hesitate next time! After all, I spent enough cash n the trip already, so why not?
I would certainly go back to Radiation Records if I ever find myself in Rome.
@@EmbryonicRobot check out their label releases sometime - you might dig some of the early UK punk, etc. they have reissued. I must have about 6- 7 radiation releases now. Recently got Teenage Jesus and the Jerks (old Lydia Lunch band) on Radiation reissue.
Cool pre Birthday Party album! I didnt know about this one. It sounds pretty cool. Young Nick Cave. Post punk sound
It's a really good record, though I read that Nick Cave hates it!
@@EmbryonicRobot Its probably because he was younger and he seems a bit less dramatic / over the top on that one. I checked it out on spotify. good record!
"Sometimes you just have to declare bankruptcy and move on with your life"..."38 years, that's insane"..."Some things piqued my curiosity, but I didn't actually buy anything"..."3 stores within striking distance"...I really like the look of that Simple Minds record and will probably look for it online Brian.
Next time, I will adopt your record shopping strategy. Sometimes, when leave a record behind, you never see it again, which sucks.
Aha! Dance This Mess Around was certainly a single. I'm really not that complicated. But, I suppose others will come to a different conclusion 🤔
What's your favorite Morrissey album?
It's probably Viva Hate, but a really excellent album is the Bona Drag comp, because it pulls together some singles, non-album singles, and b-sides. It is fabulous.
Hi Brian. I posted a comment here just after you posted your video which has disappeared. It's very annoying when that happens ... I enjoyed your videos from Italy. You picked up some good records, despite problems with the exchange rate. Was Ultravox's John Peel Session EP a victim of the exchange rate? ... There's an Italian reissues record label called Radiation. I'm assuming it's connected to the Radiation record shops? All the best.
Hi Carl - Radiation Records had quite a few pressings from the Radiation label, so I made that connection. I assume they are related. I considered the Ultravox Peel sessions, but I feel like I was still being mentally oriented to Italy. I forget the price, but later in the trip I wished I had grabbed it. Such is life 🙂
I made you a quick welcome home video but it somehow ended up a short! I’m at a loss but oh well. I’m going to get so many thumbs down!!!!
Oh, I am off to watch it!
