Being able to drop a leg off to catch myself is part of riding loose, and loose is fast in most cases. I don't care if its faster or slower or whatever, I can go faster knowing that I can take a leg off whenever I want. Yes, readjusting during a race run is a thing, but once your foot is stuck there, you're good to go for the most part.

I’ve got a pair of trail cross and a pair of free rider pro’s. the free rider pro’s are marginally grippier (most likely due to the sole shape?) and definitely stiffer. I feel the trail cross flex underfoot at times. At the end of the day, both are super grippy and are awesome on the trail!

Tony Hawks signature AIRWALK shoes were killer back in day. Way better than 5-10s. Problem with 5-10 were once you put your foot down if it’s not in the right spot you’re doomed. Lift your foot up and hope it goes where you want it. Now I use Specialized 2FO Roost with UNITE pedals, the UNITE pedals are killer

Yes! Tried to make the free rider pro work, but too narrow and my foot was cramping after an hour. Back to regular free rider. Now that I’m used to wide toe box shoes, it amazes me shoe manufacturers keep making narrow shoes. Have they not traced an outline of a foot, especially splayed under pressure and compared that to the shoe they are designing?

@@bongobob7079 Totally agree, everyone knows. But every time GMBN does something like this, a big old “AD” sign is in the thumbnail. And look at the title, is completely the other way around: flat pedals are obviously not made to win medals. Practically nobody use them in the competitive scene, except for some crazy guys. And for some reason there are many of models made for regular riding and just one, pretty dated, model for racing. And as far as I’m aware, there simply no other brand that makes one.

But they don’t win medals. To properly ride flats you need to drop your heels which puts you further over the back of the bike. Now days professional downhillers need to be forward on the bike in attack position, Aaron Gwinn has a video about this. Being more forward and locked into the bike allows you to go faster. Plus over rough terrain your foot stays planted exactly where you need it. That’s why 19 out of the top 20 downhillers and enduro riders are clipped in.

You see it more in enduro these days. I think Hill was the last downhiller to win on flats. In EDR, Morgan Charre and Alex Rudeau are both dedicated flat pedal riders, and other riders in EDR may use flats on specific courses. DH world is 99% of the field on CB Mallet DH, Enduro world is still mostly CB Mallet E but a fair number of SPD, HT (Courdurier in particular rides HT pedals) and flat pedal users as well.

My Five Ten Freerider Pro had good grip, but quickly looked tatty and the soles tore up pretty quick, and they take about a month to dry.
Five Ten Trailcoss Pro had insane grip, too sticky really - same Stealth rubber as above in theory, made in a different factory, maybe? In some ways they have aged far better, but completely coming away where the sole meets the upper, Five Ten said this was normal, let water in so quickly. Expensive mistake, those.
Onto Fox Unions lace ups, similar grip to Freerider Pro, allows a little adjustment, sole is wearing better so far, and they're far better in the wet - and dry faster. Will see how they last but so far a step up after a little use.
I would like to try the Crankbrothers Mallet clips - like the idea of being stuck to the pedals with the ability to adjust foot position. Need to finish my basic How to Bike skills first.
