Logan really did make me surprisingly emotional. And when Laura reveals her power...that got me.
When she laid the cross down in an X, that made me cry out loud. And when she called him 'Daddy', and you saw that the children had Wolverine comics and action figures too...those great scenes made me feel very emotional.
Children of men has also a very powerful and emotional scene near the ending
I can’t make it through that line.
Children of Men is one great film. Complex world, intense sequences, and endearing characters. Logan is quite excellent too and surprisingly very similar to Children of Men. I haven't noticed until this video
I personally wouldn't say they're endearing characters, But everything else i do. especially the action scenes.

Now I'm interested. I've been thinking about this for the past hour and a lot of Clint Eastwood's later films (starting with Unforgiven) follow a similar archetype.
When you make content as great as Michael's, it is pretty easy to compliment!

Can I just say, well done on doing a Logan video essay that doesn't revolve around "being symbolic of superhero fatigue?" I get it, lack of variety is not good for movies, but quite ironically, those essays just turned to saying the same thing over and over. I'm not trying to deny superhero fatigue exists, I'll freely admit I'm there myself, but when you say the same thing over and over, it stops being clever. So kudos to you for approaching Logan from a different angle and using another fantastic movie for comparison. Love your work.

Thank you! Yeah I just learned about her this year, but I really enjoy her writing. I think a lot of books on writing are essentially trying to convey the same things, and it's about finding which approach resonates with you. Her approach definitely resonates with me.
I agree! She has a lot of really solid writing videos here on UA-cam too. The production value isn't great (it's just her talking to the camera), but the insights are really valuable.

Damn. This made me want to watch Children of Men again. Amazing movie.
Hmm...very interesting comparison. I always likened Logan as being similar to Clint Eastwood's Unforgiven (Grizzled old guy comes out of retirement for one last job, and goes out living with the burden of what he's done). But after seeing this i see the similarities between these two as well.
Logan definitely has influences from a lot of films and genres, so there are many interesting comparisons to be made. I think part of what made it so great was remixing those genres with the superhero film.
BattleUp Saber, the original comic miniseries, in which the Logan movie is loosely based on, is actually inspired by the Unforgiven film. So u're on the right track.
NOT that related, but have you watched the Japanese remake of Unforgiven?
If you haven't, it's well worth a watch. I really enjoyed it.

Unforgiven is very similar to The Twilight Samurai actually. You should compare them in one of your videos. Both amazing films!
Logan immediately became one of my favorite comicbook movies after seeing it in theaters (and with time, will probably only get better). Children of Men is one of my top 5 favorite movies to date. Alfonso Cuaron is a brilliant director. The cinematography is superb, and all of the actors really flesh out their roles. I've watched it numerous times, and my enjoyment only increases with each viewing.
Brilliant as always, you're a serious inspiration for UA-camrs who want to create refreshing, excellent content.

This was great! A very clear and thoughtful breakdown, reminds me a little bit of my video on Logan vs. Metal Gear Solid and how they both managed to give their respective heroes a meaningful departure while keeping the larger universe alive :)
I know this channel is strictly for movies, but I would like to add the video game, The Last of Us, with the same themes of as these two films, specifically Logan. Logan and TLOU both have the same theme of embracing the love of family. The adventures that Logan and Joel begin are developed by the loss of family, allowing both characters to experience little apathy for their normal world and their future. Just like Logan and Children of Men, the inciting incident happens in TLOU as well, with Joel refusing to smuggle Ellie to a hospital for potentially finding a cure for mankind. I won’t tell the whole story but I would just like to point out that both stories have very identical qualities.

Have you ever considered doing a video on how to properly utilize exposition?
I ask because ALOT of movies these days often dump expository dialogue in the beginning or throughout the runtime to hurriedly explain what's going on in order to get to setpieces so it would be great if you did a video showing how to properly get across exposition to the audience without pausing the flow of the story.

No surprise that two incredible films have so much in common. I think their endings alone make them both infinitely rewatchable because they enrich the rest of the experience.

Even The Last of Us follows a similar story structure. Reluctant protagonist with no hope. But towards the final act he makes a decision, saving Ellie instead of developing a cure to save humanity.
Interesting how they brought that conflict across. Makes you wonder how subjective right and wrong can be.
The best in-depht storytelling analysis on youtube, at least for me, your knowledge of this art is incredible and i think you deserve the best!

Great video, the more I watched, I realized the Aquaman movie actually fits almost all these criteria as well with a reluctant hero who gets an offer that he initially refuses and is transformed by the end

The last of us game,
is really similar to those 2 films, especially within the first part "Act" of the game.
Logan is still my favorite film of 2017, with Blade Runner and War For The Planet of The Apes closely behind. I hope Jackman gets the Oscar nomination (and hopefully win) that he deserves.
Alex Love I totally agree with your opinion. For me Blade Runner 2049 is the best movie of this year, Logan is my second best movie and War for the planet of the apes my third best movie of this year. And Yes! I hope Jackman gets an Oscar and Andy Serkis.

Lessons from the Screenplay RIGHT!?
Lessons from the Screenplay and yet it's also one of the most over looked or forgotten films. It's really sad, you could walk up to most people who watch a lot of movies and care about them and they will have heard of all of the movies about as good as Children of Men but 99% of them have never heard of Children of Men.
Even in terms of media coverage you will see all of this stuff about why X great movie is great or it's flaws, but you wont see that media coverage for Children of Men.
Personally, I have never seen a movie as good as Children of Men and I'm not sure I ever will which just makes this all the sadder. I guess I'll still get to introduce it to every new friend I make so there's that :)
Epicawsomesocks Agreed, it's such an underrated film. I remember the first time I watched it a couple years ago I wasn't expecting anything, and I was in awe from start to finish. And I hardly ever cry at films but I did watching it.
Looks like I need to rewatch Children of men, been years since I have seen it and I was young and less mature.

@SwenglishGamer yeah, he's lying. There are scenes that are a complete rip-off almost word for word.
Specially the dialogues between Logan and Laura near the end connecting over nightmares and she getting angry that Logan wants to be leave her for fear of bad things happening to her if she stays
Not to mention the overall tone and plot
@SwenglishGamer But it's done all the time. Maybe he didn't play it. Maybe he saw imagery from it. Maybe he saw clips when he investigated. Maybe he read some summaries of someone told them to him. So many big budget films are rips of foreign film or other media. You get away with it by saying its "a coincidence".

I noticed at the opening that when the people find oil underground, one of the people dips his finger into the oil, and puts it on his son's forehead. Is he like-- I don't know-- blessing him or something, and then that kid becomes Daniel Plainview's son (bastard from a basket).
How did you notice this, it was so well hidden by SHOWING IT FOR AN ENTIRE SCENE, you really have an eye for those things.

I think the thing that strikes with me as the strongest part of Children of Men is its stark pro-immigration message and I think we see this get paralleled in this journey taken. I think as much as the straight narrative of clawing to a hope for life again is very well created what makes Children of Men really stand out as a fantastic story is the lie that the world can exist while passively allowing this xenophobic view to continue and this journey to a new place is when the world truly begins to live again.
I agree. There are many powerful elements of the film, there is so much to it's vision of the future (which is frighteningly feeling more and more accurate).
I'm always deeply moved how group members along the way sacrifice themselves for the greater good of hope for something better in the future knowing full well they won't see it, but someone else will.
Although I prefer a more responsible immigration system(one based on merits and the immigrant's willingness to assimilate with the host country's culture), I think Children Of Men is a cautionary tale of each culture unwillingness to improve themselves will lead to doom for humanity as a whole.
@@UreiMiseinen why willingness to assimilate? Idk where you're from, but I live in the US, where we've long talked about the values of the "melting pot" of immigrants to the country, despite common anti-immigrant sentiment (esp against latin american and middle eastern people). We wouldn't have quintessentially american things, like St Patrick's day, pizza, or hamburgers if earlier generations of immigrants had left their cultures behind, so why should we ask newer immigrants to leave theirs behind?

Lessons from the Screenplay I loved the movie! I've never appreciated the sound of a baby crying until the scene where he walks past the solders.
As always, Great video with interesting ideas I've never heard of and I look forward to implementing them into my own work! Both the stories were uncannily similar. Both protagonist don't believe in the haven where they're going. They both get everyone around them killed. And much more. I liked how instead of dwelling on this, you examined the stories and what made them effective in each their own way!

Logan is an amazing film by itselft, but I'm sure you will enjoy it more if you know Wolverine's (Logan) backstory to sympathize with him.
