Well.... I am 72 and just ordered my first violin!! I grew up with violin and guitar in our home when young... I can feel the violin music and have always wanted to do it just for me... I also ordered my Husband some ear plugs!
I'm 16 and I've just ordered my first violin! I've received a lot of negativity with people saying that I'll lose interest within a few weeks but I'm really determined to go far! I'm looking to pick up a job to pay for lessons but for now I'm learning off of UA-cam xxx
I started playing the violin a 1,5y ago, at 18- I was hearing exactly the same things as you- additionaly a few of relatives was discouraging me and mocking by saying "pha, you can't do it, look at you, you never wont learn how to play it, you only wasted your money, can you finally stop playing this shit, I have a headache" and so on, what made me cry soo many many times. It was so painful to hear, especially from relatives, but I said to myself- who cares? it makes me happy, it makes me feeling satisfied, I'm proud of myself that I can play (theres still a lot of work on this path in fact, but im actually pretty happy with my skills after so short time) a lot of songs, especially of Lindsey Stirling's, which are sooo difficult. Everyone was saying "its max a month and she will throw it away". I will never EVER unlove with violin and I will never stop playing! The point is to NEVER give up if something gives you happiness. YOU have to be happy with what you do and what you aim at, no matter what other people say :) Goodluck with learning! I'm taking lessons only from Alison on YT, it provided me so ...cking much skills :) She's totally amazing and I'm extremly grateful for her, for taking her time in doing all of these videos
Let me tell you that you are the perfect age to start learning! I was fifteen when I started to learn the piano, and had no teacher, so it took quite awhile to learn to read, play the notes, fingering and finally play. I am an old man(66) now but can play very well and almost anything, and the keys for you are: passion, love of the violin, and determination to succeed. You'll have to commit yourself to learn , there will be many mistakes and frustrations but DON'T QUIT! Open your mind and your heart and see yourself playing beautifully , impressing not only yourself, but others. With You Tube, you have the advantage (which we didn't) of listening to and watching all the greatest violinists in the world for free! Watch , study and learn from this. These people who say these negative things SECRETLY want you to give up and not try, or that you'll lose interest because they are afraid that you may show them up , so they want you to fail so that THEIR failures won't seem so onerous. That's why they say these things. It's a disgusting trait that many people carry around with them. No one in my family can play anything, but they had the same opportunity as I did, so in my opinion they have missed out on a lifetime of pure pleasure in music. By the way, every hour, every day every year you spend learning the violin will pay you back many times over and you'll be able to look back in 20 years with pride and pleasure that you did it . Playing beautiful music is like a gift to yourself, and nobody can take it away from you.
I'm 30, started playing guitar at 15, and people said the same things. I mean at that age I was suffering with severe social anxiety and depression, but I didn't feel I could talk about those things. So for me, music was an outlet...a way to talk without necessarily saying a word. I think some people underestimate how important music can be to us, how much we might need it. During my music studies in college, some people would be surprised that I did have social anxiety. But when you're performing, I think, to steal the title of a Metallica song--nothing else matters. You're in the zone. I over the years also picked up bass and piano, now looking at violin--it's something that I wanted to do back in my teenage years, but wasn't feasible. I hope you've been progressing, and happy with a beautiful instrument.
I bought my first violin when I was 18 because I had a very rough childhood, even school was a huge challenge. When I started college at 18 I learned some basics and ended up quitting for several reasons that revolved around money. Four days ago, I began again. Now at 22, I'm proud to say that I have overcome my doubts. Whilest I'm not even close to playing more than one line of music, I'm so happy to play again. I feel complete with my violin. Also, I watched this video because I felt the doubt creeping in. I know I'm not a master violinist, I know that I'm not the only one starting in early adulthood on a difficult instrument.
Camille De Mott Hey 22 years here as well and I'm just now starting back. I had fifth grade strings and I would not put the violin down I could only imagine how good I couldve been by now. Unfortunately my mom never decided to actually invest in one for me. But I say do it because I am and it's such a beautiful hobbie.
thank you. i have been taking care of my grandfather's violin since i was 10 but never played. youtube was not back in the late 70's.. so now i am 46 and i am starting to play the fiddle/violin.. I find this wonderful. i don't want to be a world class violinist but i want to play just to play..nothing more.
I'm 19 and I recently started playing the violin, it's actually been about two weeks and I've never had any classes (yet), I only practiced like 5 hours in total, and I can already play very simple melodies without sounding too scratchy. What helped me the most is the fact that I've been playing the guitar for about 8 years, and I've got a good grasp of music theory. I've always heard that the violin is a super hard instrument and that it would take years just to sound ok, and the fretless neck always baffled me, which is why it took a few years for me to finally decide to just go for it. I guess what I'm trying to say is, if you already know your theory and you have some experience with other string instruments, but you think that you don't have enough time or patience to learn the violin, like I did for quite a while, just give it a try, it won't be as hard as you think. And if you're a complete beginner to music, just try it too, I know it's super hard at first, I remember first learning the guitar, but trust me, it will be worth it.
i'm in the exact same situation as you! unfortunatly, i think i'm starting to develop bad habits because of my guitar experience, like left hand placement... I should take actual lessons
I'm 20 and have been learning guitar for about 10 years. I also have an A level in Music. I started learning violin a few days ago, self-taught, and so far, I feel like I'm picking it up quite quickly. My biggest problem is stopping myself from resting the neck in the palm of my hand... My goal is to learn vibrato. I can't wait!
Thanks for the video. I'm 43 and always wanted learn the violin, but considered myself too old for it. In fact I will purchase a beginner violin on monday.
I'm 66 and my son has just given me his violin, as he's moving abroad. I've just been listening to the 9 year old next door doing his piano practice at 7.00am! some days it's even earlier. So looking forward to shreeching away on my instument quite soon...
I would first like to thank Alison for being such a remarkable individual, there are many wonderful violinists, a few take the time to teach, fewer do so online, even fewer do so with all the tips, help and resources, even fewer would offer those resources for free, but above all, only Alison's method of teaching suits my way of learning. Her series of Learning To Play The Violin is amazing! I'm 45, and in junior school we had occasional music lessons to learn rhythm, the triangle, shakers, drum, glockenspiel, cymbal etc, I always ended up with the last on the table, the one no one else wanted or just stamping or clapping. In my senior school years music for the first two years music was compulsory, once every two wks, if (as was often the case) we were listening to a record (CD's hadn't been invented), and were asked what instrument was being played I had few problems deciding if it was a trumpet, trombone, violin, cello, harp, flute etc, I was good at that, but we never touched a instrument, the teacher would draw on the blackboard shapes, hashes, notes and told us to copy it, the one time I asked him "What does that mean?", he pointed behind him to the blackboard and said "It's up there", the kids laughed, I never asked again, he was more interested in teaching those kids that had a more natural talent and out of a school of 1200 kids over all the secondary years I was there only about 15-20 were in the school band, only two were boys, over half the band was woodwind and brass. When those two years were up I had about 10 pages of copied 'stuff' from the blackboard, but I still couldn't read music, let alone understand sheet music. I held a secret admiration for a girl in my class who did take music, she played violin. but she was too smart and clever for me to get near, in all the top classes where as I was just rubbish at everything except metalwork and computing. My parents got me a organ, play by numbers it was, great at the time, but I learnt numbers, I had no idea that middle C was 1, D was 2 and so on. As I got older I collected some CD's of classical music that was a weekly magazine issue, it at least added to my love of listening to instruments, but it was £5 so that was expensive, In my 20's I suffered a severe breakdown, (now the medication I continue to take makes learning/remembering anything five times harder), but a couple of months ago I brought myself a violin, I just needed too, and with Alison's tutorials I'm progressing, slowly, but that's me! I've learnt how to read basic music (another of Alison's lesson's), and can now even write down on sheet music what I'm discovering by ear, often by accident. My only downfall now seems to be that I have short fingers! Grrr!... And multitasking right arm movement/position with left hand/finger position isn't exactly working too well, but I'm so enjoying my new found skills, I just wish I had more time to practice. I totally intend to keep at the violin, not because of the money I've spent or to make up for the years lost not learning, but because even with my poor playing at the moment, I feel inside myself a love for the music I'm hearing resonate from a instrument I've always loved, especially when I get even just a bar or two near perfect, that to me is an amazing feeling...
Picking up our "FREECYCLE" upright piano tomorrow morning at 8.30am, made my own piano dolly! I'm 43 yrs young, ex soldier, biker..just want to learn the piano. I think a home is different when a piano is being played.
Just picked up my violin this week and started playing it. I'm 28 and an incomplete quadriplegic so I don't have full hand function... but it's just that much more challenge to overcome. I can't wait to fiddle out some tunes of my irish heritage
I am 56 years old and have always wanted to learn the Violin and the Piano. I love your Videos. So informative. I really look forward to my lessons with you everyday. Thanks for all the great videos.
I am 62years old and I am about start learning the piano. I was too young at 5 years old when my grandparents pushed me into learning the piano, my teacher was about 70 years old had a very dark and dingy house with an aspidistra in the window and the house smelled of mothballs, I just hated it. So, here I go again this time I am determined to get to e a half decent pianist. Wish me luck! X
I do not wish you luck, no I wish you better than that. I wish you non-stop determination and a self-analytical approach, to help you pass each obstacle with ease. Go forth...enjoy and express yourself Susan 'Paganini' McGill!
Well, I am 65 and received my violin for Christmas. It's amazing what awful sounds can come from this instrument, but I am having fun and slowly starting to sound better. Thankfully, my neighbors are too far away to hear. Thanks for these videos! I think it's because of them that I am actually improving! I also play the guitar and two sizes of ukulele so was under the impression that since on the violin you only play one note at a time (unless you play fiddle double stops) it would be easier than the guitar. Well, I was wrong about that. Might be true if you just plucked the notes. The bow is pretty tricky too. I am confident it will all come together at some point. Meanwhile, I am having a blast!
Hi, I'm 63 and I've been learning to play the violin for 18 months now, I'm not sure how well I'm doing but my teacher seems to think I'm doing ok. I'm still working full time so I can't practise as much as I'd like to, can't wait to retire.
I learned the guitar/bass at 25 (ish), the violin at 31 or 32. Now as I am approaching 40..I not only work as a music instructor, but am starting my endeavor into the hammered dulcimer. It's cliche, I know, but you do get out what you put into it.
i started at 29 but not had proper lessons till i was 32. about to start grade 4. i want to teach as well but got a long way to go yet lol thanks for stating starting at ur age and this still gives me inspiration.
Im 70 and started a year ago and am just loving it, and making really good progress too. My ambition is to join the local string orchestra and I practise about 3 times a day for short periods. (Incidentally I'm left handed so don't let that put you off.) These videos are absolutely fantastic and now I'm including vibrato in my daily practices. Thank you Alison!
You're never too old to learn! I started playing flute when I was 28 years old. Am 35 now and playing in an orchestra band with lots of pleasure. I'm now trying my hand on the violin and piano. I don't care if I will become a professional or not. As long as I have fun.
Slightly off the age subject, I have found that the best way for me to learn is to learn as many songs as I possibly can and of different styles if possible. After a while you should begin to connect the dots, learning which chords work together and how they relate to one another. I have never learned to read sheet music to the point that I could play it in real time. The best I can do is decipher it if I cannot figure a part out by ear. But, after learning many many chords and experiencing the use of those chords in certain songs, my ear has improved to the point that I can easily recognize many of them in new songs I am learning. My main point here is..... LEARN as many songs as possible and your playing ability will continue to improve! BTW...this woman puts a smile on my face every time I watch her videos and hear her talk :)
Thank you for posting this...I am 39 and I have always wanted to play an instrument and when I was a kid, my Mother always told me no, even though she learned Piano and Clarinet. In any event, I always wanted to learn to play something and now that I am grown and finally have a job that can support lessons, I am jumping in with both feet. I bought a Violin AND A CELLO this week and have been watching tons of videos. I start taking lessons next week, so I just wanted to say THANK YOU for letting folks know that it is never too late to start something wonderful and exciting. Get out there and DO SOMETHING!!!! CREATE! Its Great!
Your video is very encouraging :) I have ordered my first ever violin this morning and I am 52... I might not ever delight anyone else's ears, but I have wanted to learn for over 40 years and I know I will always regret it if I don't at least try
So far, I've been able to get my fingers on the keyboard where they need to be. It takes practice for the brain to acquire muscle memory and correct fingering styles.. .
I started having lessons at the age of 53 and loved it. Had no problems physically at least! Sadly due to change in personal circumstances had to give it up three years later. Started again (just teaching myself this time) about five months ago at the age of 60 and I'm really enjoying it. I also have far more time to practice now and feel I'm making good progress, although of course without a teacher I have to rely on my own subjective opinion. As you're still a youngster I'd say go for it!

Thanks for the inspiration. I'm restarting at age 52
I have just retired and now at 70 I am beginning my new adventure in violin. I find your videos very explicit that I am learning far more that I would at a regular lesson (which I have just begun). I can review your videos over and over to reinforce all your tips and proper methods of playing. Thank you. I will continue watching...
I'm 22 years old now and I only started a month ago. Ive always loved the violin and wanted to be able to play it. I have anxiety issues and some joint issues so my classes didnt go too well and had to move states so now Im using your videos and other tutorials and the materials my teacher gave me to practice on my own now. Because Im a medical student I dont have time to really practice and fatigue comes really easily. I couldnt do it when I was younger because of strict upbringing and Im absolutely resolute on ensuring that my future children will not have to experience the same. I am often disheartened by seeing young virtuosos or seeing me not make much progress by myself; but because I love the instrument so much and have indulged myself into the wonderful world of classical music; I have been trying hard to remain hopeful and optimistic. After all, I realize I know much more today than I did a few months ago and that is enough hope to get me going forward. I sometimes wish I could give up some of the things that consume too much time in my life and completely devote to this skill, but the world is not ideal and we are obliged to compromise because we have only one shot at life. Videos like this make me feel like I have a chance if I strived so thankyou! :D
I am 21 years old, and i am a biology student going to start grad school soon. I am also self learning my violin, i have decided not to hire a teacher because of financial reasons.
I am 60 and have just started learning on a violin I have had for 30 years and always meant to get around learning. It was made by my great grandfather in the 1930s and was passed down to me. I am loving it and now I have found your videos I am able to fine tune my technique a lot better!
I never saw a guitar in my life till i was 19.. no musical background, no musical knowledge or sense. but I thought, at least lets just try it, so I won't regret in future that I didn't even try. so i did, and 3 years later here I'm doing shows with very talented local groups and even teaching at 2 academies. and that's what gave me hope that I can learn anything If i work hard without worrying about the future. and that's why I'm gonna start learning violin from tomorrow XD
Hello again Alison, My name is Bradford Smith and I am 38 years old. My grandfather (Barney Bradford Hicks) played the violin for everyone but he died when I was no more then a year old. My mother (Janice) truly misses hearing him play. I am a pastor in a church now and we need more kids to be introduced to this wonderful sounding instrument as well as the adults. my soul purpose in life is to bring joy into the lives of others and I believe that you do that quite well. I want to give my mother a part of my grandfather back again. Thank you for all of your hard work in making these videos. God bless you, Simon and Billy Bob.
I play acoustical guitar...but I've always wanted to learn piano and violin. I'm 54 and my hubby is giving me a violin for Christmas in 4 days!!!! I'm very excited. I'm actually going to be learning the piano and violin at the same time! Here's hoping!
Brenda, how is it going? Did you get the violin for Christmas? Have you started violin lessons? I'm getting ready to start lessons this month. I'm 47 and have played guitar most of my life as well.
Hi Cheryl, yes I did get my violin! I have just been using the lessons from here for now. I practice as much as time will allow but it's definitely a challenge. Once I can master hitting one string at a time I believe the learning will be more smoothly.
i`m 33 n started 9 weeks ago, have just gotten to the end of 3rd n 4th finger exercises....n all I can say is Alisons way of teaching /learning works 100% love every minute of it.You wont be disappointed.
Hello, I have always wanted to learn the violin since hearing my grandmother play when I was a child. I'm now a 51 yrs old police officer and my interest has peaked again toward learning. I purchased my own violin and have found your online videos extremely helpful. Thank you very much.
I'm 54 and started piano lessons at the community college fours weeks ago. I started playing guitar four years ago. Prior to that I had never played an instrument.
I am hopefully an example of your present Video 'Am I too old to start playing the violin' . Your encouragement is amazing. I am 68, I used to play the piano many years ago to a respectable level. So as I live alone now,(I am a widow) I thought I would try to learn the Violin. With the help you give I am making steady, albeit slow progress, I have found that the memory does let me down but if I write down the key points if I am starting a new section that really helps. My stumbling block has been that because I played the piano years ago, I thought that reading music would be the least of my problems....wrong.... That has been the worst part, so I am now brushing up a bit on the piano so that music is now beginning to make sense again, so when I pick up my violin the notes on the page are no longer the hard bit, it's just a case of remembering which finger goes where to create the right sound.Thank you Alison
I love your vid and the positive comments .For years I let people convince me I had no musical talent and it would be no good to try. Some people were musically inclined but most people were not.But I caught a respiratory illness that was almost fatal and spent 9 days on life support.I decided I was going to learn piano.I am teaching myself for now because I am housebound but I am enjoying myself.I am working my way through "Greensleeves".,a song I always adored
piper xavier My advice; do what YOU want and dont let jealous people drag you down or ever let anyone tell you, you are rubbish! Do what YOU want and if thats playing the piano, then go for it!!
The Online Piano and Violin Tutor To be fair, some of my friends are very supportive.I convined myself as well I could not do it.But after surviving my illness,I am trying projects I never did before.
Never too old. I'm soon to be 64 and recently retired. I've played guitar, steel guitar, dobro and banjo for many years. Just now taking up violin and piano. I have no delusion of being a world class violinist or pianist but I love learning and music and it keeps the "fog" from setting in my brain. Thanks Alison for the services you provide. You're teaching me both instruments.
I played the viola in middle school for one year (around age 13) before changing to the trumpet for one more year, then no other instrument since. Now I am 36, and my 11 year old wants to play the violin next year in school, and I will be buying one for myself and one for her. I plan on getting some very basic practicing in with her before she gets "real" training at her school. She's really excited that I plan on playing one myself as well. She wants me to eventually play live as "The Bald Bearded Violinist." ;-) No matter how bad I might be at it, I am super excited to learn along with my daughter and practice together, neighborhood cats' ears be damned. :-D
theres a strong message in the video about following your dreams and taking responsibilty for your life if you really want something,i watched this vid and purchased my violin, my first lesson is on monday, many thanks
I'm 35 years old and have been wanting to learn to play an instrument for YEARS but no instrument ever really "spoke" to me. A year or two ago I heard Lindsey Stirling for the first time and was hooked to her music. At some point I started envisioning myself playing a violin and wasn't put off much by it. But I've been known to have flights of fancy, I want something for a while then get bored of it. It's been over a year now and nearly every day I've thought about a violin but still at my age was worried about it. I've watched a few violin teaching videos and was very glad when I came across your channel. I've finally decided that I'm going to go pick up and rent a violin for a little while and I'll be going through all your lesson videos and then look at actual lessons. Learning to read music is one of the most terrifying portions for me because I'm afraid I won't be able to do it. The few videos of yours I've watched have definitely put me at ease and I'm very anxious to get a violin in my hands especially after watching this video. I for one am very grateful you've put these videos out here for us and can't wait to get started :)
I'm 16 a guitarist and have been from the age of 8 but i hated it,, 3 years later I got really into it and haven't looked back.. Now within the past few weeks I got this idea into my head that I want to learn the violin.. no idea why but i think it was after watching a movie on Mozart.. I usually don't like classical but recently its become my go to music, I love it! hopefully getting a violin soon!
Kevin15047 Where did i typecast an instrument? I simply stated that I would like to learn the violin and that I think that stemmed from watching a movie on mozart
I'm playing both guitar and piano by self study thanks to all wonderful free resources available; UA-cam DVDs library books plus 40 years' new music since my youth etc These weren't available when I was young. Thanks Alison !
+Laura Woodswalker Luckily for you, you CAN slow them down! Clicking on the little 'cog' on the bottom left of the video will enable you to slow it down to what you want. It will only work on laptops/computers.
I'm 54. Have not picked up a fiddle for nearly 30 years.Watched some of your postings after work. Just listening to the terms used and seeing the familiar way you used your violin and bow to demonstrate a point brought it all flooding back. my hands are a bit battle scarred, but really inspirational. Thanks.
I am in my 70's and just learning how to play the violin. be serious? no. first thing to know is chill out and relax. the want to do it should make you feel good. just go for it. and most of all have fun learning. just go for it. happy practicing fellow newbies.
Thx for that positive cheer about trying something new no matter what your age !! I'm almost 66 and bought my first violin TODAY!!! ;) ...I'm taking your advice!! ;D
I am 51 and my husband rented me my first violin for Christmas. I've been watching your videos and can't wait to actually play it. I work full time and have a family so don't get a lot of practice time but now that the holidays are over, I have 1/2 hour each morning to practice. Thank you.
I started when I was 23 as well! Now I'm 24 and I have 1 word of advice, make sure you have a violin teacher that knows what they're doing! I played for 9 months with my first violin teacher and I never really learned form, now I have a different teacher and it's almost like starting over :(
I'm 58 yrs old and have just started my 3rd year of piano and like you said in your other video I was too lazy to learn my sight reading however I'm pleased to say I finally just got the hang of it and my piano teacher is soooooo happy and I am so grateful !!!
TOTALLY agree.....however, I was made to play pieces i didnt particularly like, but I thanked my violin teacher (and piano) in the end because sometimes when we want to do what 'we' want, we tend to stick to a certain comfort zone, so doing other pieces outside of this makes our learning and knowledge broader.
HI ALISON ... I have just turned 71 and am in the process of going back to my musical roots ... I picked up the guitar at the age of 10 ... started playing with a band at age 14 and played professional for a limited 10 year career ... now excited about getting back into music theory ... gaining comfort reading music ... have found encouragement watching your videos although I am not doing piano ... and, you are such a lovely lady ... THANK YOU FOR WHAT YOU DO ... time and practice is the KEY
I regret that I had got my violin in high school and I didn't start playing until I was 26/27 .. now 29 . I had to take a break because of nursing school. I feel behind. I want to play in an orchestra.
I am 61 now, and was given a violin for my birthday! I love your tutorials and am remembering how to play, despite that it has been since I was 16 that I actually did play. I love how you reassure us that it is difficult and hours and hours of practice are needed. Thank you for your clarity and reassurance in these lessons geared to beginners. It's wonderful to begin making music with my new violin. --Emilie
i am almost 25 and i just started learning the violin 2 months ago ,,and i 've learnt violin basically from your videos and tutorials ,, i am egyptian and i work in saudi arabia , there is no one to teach me here or develop me as well , so your videos are my only way to learn :D do you see that i can develop my self well without a live teacher ?? thanks
Abd Allah Alaa yes i think so. the videos on my channel will probably get you as far you are happy with. If you want to progress further then of course you will need a teacher.
salam.. I'm thinking of learning violin and i choose to reply on your post because I'm from saudi arabia. so, how is the instructions are they easy to follow and from where i can get a good instruments?! appreciate ur reply in advance...
When I was thinking about buying a violin, I came across your videos and you made my mind up for me. I have been playing since Christmas and my teacher loves my progress and I owe a lot of it to you. Since I travel a lot for work, you supplement my in person teaching. Thank you so much
I'm 53 years old and recently did my piano teaching diploma with ABRSM and just LOVE teaching and also just started teaching myself the violin and truely enjoying it! Thank you for the excellent videos to support this new venture!
rushiop rusho dude im 26 and ive been playing guitar since i was 12 and i got a violin about 2 months ago. knowing guitar helps alot as far as note/string memorization. as for finger placement, ive played a fretless bass since i was 16 so it comes naturally for me to memorize finger placement, but if ur already musically inclined, then you can learn any insturment as long as u put ur mind to it and practice practice practice
Thank you for this video! I totally agree that you are never too old to learn something new. I played piano for many years (I started playing when I was about 8 years old and went well into my 20s...and played in churches into my 30s) and then dropped off...my husband drops little hints for me to get back to playing...like moving the piano into plain sight in my home office (...so that it is in the backdrop when I do webinars) :)... I've always wanted to learn violin, I purchased one and have it there. I just turned 43 recently... I am so happy to have discovered your channel. I'm going to do it! Cheers!! :)
Thank you for this video Alison. I'm 26, and I was wondering if it would be possible for me to learn the violin just by watching your videos? Money -- to buy the violin. ( Check ) Time -- to enroll as a violin student under a local music teacher. ( Cross )
The Online Piano and Violin Tutor Ah, Right you are! So, I just bought a violin; I'm gonna go through all of the violin tutorial videos that you've so generously uploaded, and I'll let you know what becomes of myself and my ambition to play the violin. Thank you once again for the amazing stuff that you've been doing. Cheers. :)
I turned 70 in May and I always wanted to play an instrument and the violin 🎻 is my favorite it’s just sounds so beautiful. My great grandson just turned 10 and he played his first lessons at school today. But it’s in my heart ♥️ I can’t hardly wait to learn. I will have my violin 🎻 in about 6 days. I’m so excited. Love your videos and I know that with God and your help I’ll will learn. Thank you Allison this video has really helped me. God Bless you 🙏🏽♥️🎻♥️
I have to thank you for sharing your knowledge this channel! I started playing violin when I was 8-years-old and played for 10 years, but I never had a single private lesson due to lack of resources. I played for my school orchestra, practiced and struggled hard to get to the same level as the other students, but always felt a little behind. Over 10 years later, I finally live in a place where I have my own space to pick it up and practice again! Even though I still may not have the resources for private lessons, it's something I'm heavily considering for when my circumstances change. Until then, I can't tell you how grateful I am to have your videos as a resource. UA-cam wasn't around when I was growing up, and little lessons like techniques for changing positions, perfecting vibrato, and ways to improve sight reading weren't available for me then, but now I can watch you and others teach concepts like these at the touch of a button. It's wonderful, and in the six months since I've picked up the violin again, I feel that I've already improved a great deal. I'm going to keep watching and practicing!
I have always wanted to be able to play an instrument since i was young, but i never took any music lessons (because money and time). Recently i feel the eagerness to play, and just picked up my sister's violin that has been kept in the storage room for almost more than 6 years. Then i found your videos and i love the way you give us the details (i think I've never found such video lessons like yours) and they helped me a lot. I have zero experience on music and i just rely on your vids. My colleague said that it was too late for me to start learning but i said better late than never. But with the practices i did, i questioned myself if i really be able to do it. I lost my confidence that someday i would play for my family on Christmas, or in the church. I almost lost my hope that i maybe shouldn't dream that big bc learning an instrument is just hard. So thank you Alison, i really need the motivation. I found new hope with my violin, because to me it's more than i wanna show people that i can play violin, i just love music. I think what you do is more than just giving lessons to people. I feel really blessed that i found your YT 😉 (Didn't think it would be this long but whatever)
I started to learn flute last year, at age of 37. I have never learned any musical instrument properly in my life. After 18 months I passed ABRSM grade 5 exam with merit. Now I am working on my theory and grade 6 pieces. I don't know how far I can go in this journal, but I will never give up. Because I love flute very much! Practicing everyday! If you have passion with something, go for it! Dont' stop dreaming!!!
Well I have recently turned 60 and live in a rural part of Australia. I have just purchased my first violin and felt it was time to expand my musical knowledge into a new area. I am currently a classically trained Baritone for which I only started taking lessons in my 50's and sing every day. I felt it was time to exercise the brain cells again and learn something new. I have always wanted to learn a stringed instrument but until now have never had the time needed to learn until now. Thankyou Alison for inspiring me to try and learn
I'm 30 and got a hot pink violin for Christmas! Super excited to start. I've always wanted to do it. If I can stick with it I will upgrade to a nicer violin :)
I studied classical piano for ten years and always wanted to play the violin but never had the time or opportunity to do so. I am a retired educator and with your help have been teaching myself to play the violin. It has been four months now, and I am playing easy classical and semi classlical pieces and loving it! You have been extremely helpful for me. I cannot express how much I appreciate your videos on how to properly play the violin. You are an excellent teacher and an angel to me.
it gives you a goal and makes you work to the peak of your ability. I wouldnt worry about exams at this stage - get a violin and start learning first then you can think about them if and when the time is right for you.
Thanks for your encouragement, yes I am 52 years old living in Australia and have found a young girl to teach me violin. It has always been my favourite instrument and I love how it's sound sings to your heart. I questioned my age and was totally reassured I will do it if I am dedicated. Well, I am and I learn a lot from your videos, so thank you. I came from a very poor family and music lessons where not on the agenda. My last child is finishing school and I thought of what I could to do and after a long time wondering it came to me. Wish me luck, plus I am left handed and having to retrain my whole brain to the right side, so it is fun!
I am 39 years old. I started taking lessons this past January but have learned so much already. I look forward to getting better and better. I have fibromyalgia and arthritis in my shoulders. Yet that has not stopped me from learning. It is never too late to learn. Hope this post encourages others to go for it.
I am nearly 61 picked up a violin and it felt so natural, I was able to play right away. I tried guitar when I was a teen and played piano since I was 5 years old, at the very first try my mother called out from the living room as she though that it was my big sister who had been told to run an errand. I am loving the freedom to learn this new instrument completely
Yes why not. I play by ear all the time as it helps me learn pieces faster. I listen to the pieces until my ears bleed, then i look at the sheet music but i dont have to concentrate hard or read it throughly as i play 50% by ear and 50% looking at the music.
Started learning the violin about two months ago at 52, now 53 and quite surprised to say it's going quite well, though some moments are better than others, but then it is the violin! I've wanted to learn this particular instrument since I was about 5 or 6 but there's always been something else preventing me getting on with it. I have one violin book giving the beginner basics and Alison's videos. These, together, with watching and listening to professional player videos and CDs is helping with what seems to be rapid progress to me at this stage, though I suspect they'll be a brick wall or two ahead to get through. Very glad I got around to this at last as its also providing me with a sense of purpose in difficult personal circumstances. Thanks for this video, Alison, as it is a boost for us oldies!
Thank you Allison for this posting. I'm 26 and have been playing the piano religiously for one year and will be attending a beautiful piano camp in Vermont for 10 days. Many of us adults didn't have the chance when we were young and deserve the gift of music just as much as children do. I support all adults who want to give themselves a chance to take up instrumental music and encourage it 100%.
Hi Alison. I started playing violin when I was 5 & stopped when I was 19 - 50 years ago - mainly because I wanted to play more 'sociable' instruments like piano & guitar. I've been teaching the piano & keyboard for the last 12 years but I'm now largely retired & decided to renew my acquaintance with the violin. For fun, I bought an NS Design electric model which I can work with 'silently' or plug it into my keyboard! It's quite strange how much I've forgotten but also how much I remember. Many of my generation, often pushed by parents, took up piano or violin only to give up as soon as we could. I've taught a few of those & helped them realise that music could be fun after all ^_^ Your videos have been helpful & inspirational & I'm practicing regularly to recover my long lost vibrato technique! Thanks very much.
Loved the positivity of this video! I played piano and guitar all my life but always wanted to learn violin. My youngest played violin for 8 years before the lite bulb went on that it was me that wanted to play violin and he wanted to play guitar. So we switched. I was 50 at the time and he now is the proud owner of my guitars and I ought my own violin a year later. Unfortunately, I sprained my left wrist 2 years into my new passion and am just now getting back to my practicing. Do not think you are too old. Age is a state of mind and if you love something like the violin, do it. It is an incredible feeling when you can play your first song!
I'm 49 and I'm starting in on the viola. I played violin at an intermediate level in 8th grade, though didn't go further. I appreciate your videos a great deal- Thank you for your work here.
Hi, I'm 65 years old and have just bought a Yahama P115 digital piano. I took lessons as a child but gave up as I wished at the time to play out with my friends rather than practice. We'll I have decided that it is not to late and started my scales again tonight. Thanks for the incentive and I will follow your videos carefully, Keith
Thank you for your advise. I am 21 years old. And I want to play piano since I was a child. After watching this video, I feel much more confident to do so. Again, THANK YOU SO MUCH.
As someone who has learned a few instruments as an adult, I can definitely say you are never too old. The most important is: don't practice to get better, but learn to enjoy practice AND get better. You can structure your daily practice to improve and learn but it will only get you as far as you can have fun. I started learning violin less than a week ago and so far, I get excited every scale that doesn't sound (too) horrible, I laugh every bad squeaky note, I'm trying to play simple songs and I'm having a ton of fun. All that really matters is to have a great time, so much you can't wait to get back at it the next day. Then before you realize it, you'll be good and be able to express yourself through that instrument. And though you'd be wrong to think you won't get better, it'll still be time well spent as much as you have fun spending it.
I started playing the violin (my instructor calls it a Fiddle) when I was 61 in October of 2015. I mostly lead towards Irish Fiddle and American Folk or Mountain Music. You are exactly right, Alison! You are never too old.
I am 23 years old and I will be starting the violin next week. I'm so excited and can hardly contain myself. I fell in love with the instrument when I was first heard it when I was in year 3 (7 years old) but my mum didn't let me play it so I made a promise to myself that will try and learn when I get my first job. I know its going super hard for me to learn right now since I am taking ACCA exams as well but I'm going learn and push myself anyways in the violin as well.
I'm 24 and I started learning violin again after seeing your videos. You are a source of inspiration, thank you. If only I had found your videos earlier I could have started before, but then again I always thought I was too old to pick it up.
As far back as I can remember I have loved hearing violin music. At age 66, a grandmother, I work full time and I am a beginning violin student. It is a great personal outlet for me. I am just learning for my own enjoyment. That said I still practice often and your videos and my teacher give me much confidence. Thank you.
Alison I would like to thank you for putting this video up. I love instruments and have always loved the violin, but financial circumstances and time management would not allow me to get one and learn. Now in my later years I am able. My daughter showed me video of Lindsey Stirling and I was inspired again to try. Came here and then found you. I am 56 years old and I am with you on you are never too old to learn. With your lessons (which by the way I love) I am learning the violin now enjoying.
I am not too old at 63 I have been playing since l was 8 (by ear) but I do tend to get slightly distracted by how lovely you are! By the way thank you I just bought my latest weighted elec piano on your recommendation andI am so pleased with it, thank you once again.🎹🎹🎹
32 yr old drummer.. I've told my wife I want to learn a new instrument, mentioned how I love the violin... she randomly bought me a violin for our 1st anniversary. Now I will be forced to learn to read sheet music and practice at least an hour a day. I plan to video my progress maybe once a week.. 5-10mins at a time... should be fun to watch when I "master" the violin. I hope to progress to at least be sufficient for a Celtic/folk/rock band. Your videos are a big help to push me in the right direction. THANKS!
I will be 50 in a few months and just recently bought my first violin! Not expensive by any means, but I did go to a violin shop, so that helped! This was something I have wanted to start for quite some years now and I finally did it! Thank you Alison, for all of your informative videos! They sure are helpful! Cheers! Dave.
Well.... I am 72 and just ordered my first violin!! I grew up with violin and guitar in our home when young... I can feel the violin music and have always wanted to do it just for me... I also ordered my Husband some ear plugs!
+Jane Linton it's not fair using your daughter's photo for your profile pic. Have you ever just considered ordering a new husband?
Lady you rock!
Just go for it!!! :D
So ... what happened during this last year?
Jane Linton congrats!!So how's going ?
that's ok I am 55 and learning the violin,, good luck,,,,, let me know how it turned out
I'm 16 and I've just ordered my first violin! I've received a lot of negativity with people saying that I'll lose interest within a few weeks but I'm really determined to go far! I'm looking to pick up a job to pay for lessons but for now I'm learning off of UA-cam xxx
Don't listen to those people , Good luck!
I hope you've been progressing, and happy with a beautiful instrument.
hey phoebe uhm so i’m 15 and i rly want to learn how to play the violin as well :( how did things work out for you?
I'm 59 and just got my first violin! I'm starting my lessons with you! You are truly my inspiration!😀
I am 71 years old, and just started piano lessons. I love your videos.
IM 55 and just started the violin playing by ear with your videos to help along the way.Much thanks, Gary USA.
thank you. i have been taking care of my grandfather's violin since i was 10 but never played. youtube was not back in the late 70's.. so now i am 46 and i am starting to play the fiddle/violin.. I find this wonderful. i don't want to be a world class violinist but i want to play just to play..nothing more.
Sew Sallysew yees me for my hometown church i sing but i love piano yes yes yes the sound so im learning at 44. TO GOD BE THE GLORY
I'm 73 and giving it a go, started yesterday and hope at least to be able to play at tune and make it sound reasonable.
Thanks for the video. I'm 43 and always wanted learn the violin, but considered myself too old for it. In fact I will purchase a beginner violin on monday.
so? can u play it ?
what happened?
1 year later, you better be at least decent now
42 years of guitar playing...... starting violin now, at 62. I'm doing it to upset the dog.
Peter Callaghan lol
I'm 66 and my son has just given me his violin, as he's moving abroad. I've just been listening to the 9 year old next door doing his piano practice at 7.00am! some days it's even earlier. So looking forward to shreeching away on my instument quite soon...
When I practice my dog stays 30 minutes max with me only to be polite and then he goes away
4 years later... how's it going?
6 years later: post something of your playing pleaaase!
Good luck sweetheart. You can do it!
Thank you Alison!
i started in my late 50s. it's been one of the most wonderful things that i have done for myself. you're NEVER too old ... or young for that matter.
Angela Marchington indeed, if you dont try you will always wish you had!
I'm 29 only bought a violin this week..you help me greatly because I can't afford taking lessons..your a saint 😘
Hi did you continue ?
just started your UA-cam course. 62 years old here
How is it. How flexible are you fingers? I am 50 and afraid to waste my time with it.
Green & Blue how is it going with the violin
I am 71 just got a violin. Wanting to take lessons.
Start with these: bit.ly/203LcOt
Thank you for the links and the encouragement!
You're an inspiration to this 30 something. Purchased mine yesterday and I'm going to learn it with my 8 year old.
Wow! So cool! Respect!
That's wonderful Linda Hall! I'm 44 and just started playing violin. My best to you! :)
She wants me to eventually play live as "The Bald Bearded Violinist." ;-)
No matter how bad I might be at it, I am super excited to learn along with my daughter and practice together, neighborhood cats' ears be damned. :-D
theres a strong message in the video about following your dreams and taking responsibilty for your life if you really want something,i watched this vid and purchased my violin, my first lesson is on monday,
many thanks
I for one am very grateful you've put these videos out here for us and can't wait to get started :)
thank you! I am 65 years old and a piano beginner. I get very frustrated learning but I haven't quit yet! Thank you for the words of encouragement.
Hey, don't typecast instruments. The violin lends itself equally well to classical, Celtic, country and contemporary.
Kevin15047 Where did i typecast an instrument? I simply stated that I would like to learn the violin and that I think that stemmed from watching a movie on mozart
Hi your the best, I’m 51 just start it three weeks ago and playing already thanks to you. I love it.
I'm playing both guitar and piano by self study thanks to all wonderful free resources available; UA-cam DVDs library books plus 40 years' new music since my youth etc
These weren't available when I was young.
Thanks Alison !
+Anthony Roberts welcome
The youtube videos really help...but I wish there was a way to slow them DOWN!
+Laura Woodswalker Luckily for you, you CAN slow them down! Clicking on the little 'cog' on the bottom left of the video will enable you to slow it down to what you want. It will only work on laptops/computers.
thanks! however, I am using an Android tablet which I take to my piano.
Thank you.
I've just turned 23 and taking my first violin lesson next week! :)
I started when I was 23 as well! Now I'm 24 and I have 1 word of advice, make sure you have a violin teacher that knows what they're doing! I played for 9 months with my first violin teacher and I never really learned form, now I have a different teacher and it's almost like starting over :(
How's it going so far mate?
I'm 58 yrs old and have just started my 3rd year of piano and like you said in your other video I was too lazy to learn my sight reading however I'm pleased to say I finally just got the hang of it and my piano teacher is soooooo happy and I am so grateful !!!
i started in mach 2012 at age 42 . the best gift i have ever given myself .
Now we are in 2020 did you continue ?
TOTALLY agree.....however, I was made to play pieces i didnt particularly like, but I thanked my violin teacher (and piano) in the end because sometimes when we want to do what 'we' want, we tend to stick to a certain comfort zone, so doing other pieces outside of this makes our learning and knowledge broader.
Thank you for your free lessons, I really appreciate it :)
graciana83 welcome.
Andrea Miller "feel behind" and "being behind" are 2 different things. you are not behind.
im 40 yrs old and I bought a Stanton 2 violin yesterday. your videos has motivated me to play. Thank you
Alison I am 89y/o i began in april I can now paly twinklwe twinklwe nice and smoothly now but silent night is triping me up but i gut there thank you

@@centsiblecooking michael are u alive bro
Thank you so much
i am 17 and im buying a violin next month
I'm 53 years old and recently did my piano teaching diploma with ABRSM and just LOVE teaching and also just started teaching myself the violin and truely enjoying it! Thank you for the excellent videos to support this new venture!
I am 27 and got a violin for Christmas!
i'm 23 and i got a violin too, i don't know why D: I play guitar not violing D:
rushiop rusho
dude im 26 and ive been playing guitar since i was 12 and i got a violin about 2 months ago. knowing guitar helps alot as far as note/string memorization. as for finger placement, ive played a fretless bass since i was 16 so it comes naturally for me to memorize finger placement, but if ur already musically inclined, then you can learn any insturment as long as u put ur mind to it and practice practice practice
( Check )
Time -- to enroll as a violin student under a local music teacher. ( Cross )
if i did not then i would not have over 200 videos. You wont know until you try... :))
The Online Piano and Violin Tutor
Ah, Right you are!
God Bless you 🙏🏽♥️🎻♥️
you are very beautiful
huh
I feel really blessed that i found your YT 😉
(Didn't think it would be this long but whatever)
I'm 43, starting piano. I'm getting to realize it's so much fun to play rhythm and melody at the same time. Very encouraging video. Thank you!
I've taught a few of those & helped them realise that music could be fun after all ^_^
Your videos have been helpful & inspirational & I'm practicing regularly to recover my long lost vibrato technique!
Thanks for the incentive and I will follow your videos carefully,
Keith
Thanks for this video! I'm 44 years old and I've just bought my first violin and I've got my very first lesson this week. I can't wait!!!
I've started about a week ago, I'm 31. My 6yo little sister and I am learning together using your lessons. Thank you so much for the free lessons!
I am not too old at 63 I have been playing since l was 8 (by ear) but I do tend to get slightly distracted by how lovely you are!
By the way thank you I just bought my latest weighted elec piano on your recommendation andI am so pleased with it, thank you once again.🎹🎹🎹
I have started learning the violin at 75 years old , I love it , can not put it down, and I picked it up farly easy ,
32 yr old drummer.. THANKS!
+Sam Powell so far it is somewhat frustrating, and it doesn't help that my wife laughs at how horrible I sound. haha.
I will be 50 in a few months and just recently bought my first violin! Not expensive by any means, but I did go to a violin shop, so that helped! This was something I have wanted to start for quite some years now and I finally did it! Thank you Alison, for all of your informative videos! They sure are helpful! Cheers! Dave.
