    Amazing how I rebuilt these in my garage as a 18 yo kid with no press.
    But I was doing motorcycles at 13yo much more complex.
    Miss those days.
    Nice work Thanks

    I just wanted to say thanks to your videos I managed to first fuck up a transmission that probably would've functioned, then proceeded to make said transmission into the BEST transmission I've ever had in under a week - mostly waiting for parts - Your videos have been helpful, informational, and have helped erase the fear of tearing apart a transmission to fix it. Thank you for everything you do and keep it up! You're one awesome guy.

    I have a 1969 Muncie I'll try to rebuild eventually. I don't know if I have to press the 3rd gear out yet but at least there's a video on how to do it. Between the book and the videos I have no doubt I can do it. Invaluable information between the 2. Keep up the GREAT and informational videos.

    Love the close attention you pay to Muncie's. My saginaw 4 speed mainshaft hack ,7075 vise jaws in a big swivel jaw turn it so you can clamp the assembled mainshaft /input straight up and down with the end of the main butted on the bench heat the case drop it down slide the barring down the input >and in the case the case dosent have to be glowing hot for this to work. Try heating the case and the old barring
    just got an 2.85 1st saginaw and its close to a z gearset in ratio's so I'm gonna try it out and live with it a while, with a little less power and axle and see how i like it. But ya finding hubs was a concern and hubs that no matter how you clock em" on the shaft or the slider just for a burn out machine somthing that will last the rest of my life early 70"s trans-am or firebird BOP some cominality at the fuel line/headpipe/ bellhousing shaker hood pie in the sky till I get some hubs/shafts/gears/kit thanks paul for keeping me headed in the right direction on this

    Paul, what did you use in between the press and the mainshaft? When you pressed off the 3rd gear i saw a rod about the same diameter as the mainshaft. Just curious what it's made of and maybe where to get one in my area. I'm sure you've had it for years since you dismantle mainshafts daily with your eyes closed.

If anything I can take the bearing splitter apart and assembly is around the mainshaft when I need it to be in order to press off the gears. LMK. Thanks for always taking time to answer.

    I have to run the torque lock sliders behind my BB Chevy or it wont stay in any gear under heavy pressure.

    • @GearBoxVideo
      @GearBoxVideo  4 роки тому +2

      Usually it is because the synchros were sloppy or engagement teeth are worn on the gear. It does happen but not often enough to ruin a build with locking sliders.

    End thrust "loads" the bearing hard against the c clips. By driving or pressing the bearing away from the clip, the clip becomes loose.

    • @GearBoxVideo
      @GearBoxVideo  4 роки тому

      Not all the time because these clips are selective fit and often times they are tapped in place. Although the factory shouldn't do that, they do. You can try and punch the bearing away from the ring to try and loosen it up. With out the hack of leaving the speedo gear in place you would be able to remove the reverse gear and they try to press it all forward again. As mentioned we use new snap rings...

      @martykath4427 4 роки тому

      @@GearBoxVideo interesting you should want 70s to 80s holden 4 speeds. I have a complete one in my shed and numerous used parts. They aren't a very good box with lots of issues. Their syncro action is heavy, wear out the cluster bore and input shaft spigot hard surfacing, break the 1-2 syncro hub circlip, and even occasionally seize 1st gear on the mainshaft. Their external shifters aren't durable and need metal bits to make them more reliable. Can send a photo if what I have if you like. Marty

    I wanted to follow up on your point with the synchronizer springs; can they actually come “loose” during operation? What happens if that happens?

    • @JonatanHellberg
      @JonatanHellberg 2 роки тому

      I wonder the same thing. The spring closest to 4 gear in my transmission seems to be a little bit short, it will only hold two keys correct.
