Can’t resist… In 1964 at 13 years old with my sister 14, returning from France, unaccompanied, we sat on the steps of the arched entrance to Kings Cross station for 6 or seven hours waiting for our French cultural/language exchange student guests to arrive. They had been delayed at the French side of the channel… immigration nonsense, of course. We knew they would eventually pass by there on their way to catch the train north to Berwick on Tweed. We gave up eventually and using the five pound note that was safely squirrelled away, we spent the night in the Great Northern Hotel, travelling home the next day. Our guests, it transpired, came through the archways within a half hour after we gave up! Sweet memories. I’m a Scot and live near Montreal, speaking french, of course. However I spent a couple of years in London and and I’m captivated by your Walks. Thank you.

Great video Joolz. Shame the security guard stopped filming He mentions private property, but if your stood on a public footpath filming just the outside / external part of the building i didn't think you needed permission under section 62 of the copyright, designs and patents act 1988. You do need permission if you intend to make a 3d model of the building and the building is within the terms of its copyright (usually lasts for the life of the architect plus 70 years), or you want to enter the building and photograph / film inside then yes you might need permission. I thought you were on a public footpath while filming the German Gymnasium?

This is precisely why I am a fan of Joolz! Quirky, sentimental tidbits of odd historical minutiae attached to seemingly everywhere you look! Like that Joolzy memorial to Glindor Michael, or linking the misdaventures of Verlaine and Rimbaud to Simons' rather brilliant impression of Stallone's Rambo, or Julian's more than passable Jimmy Stewart. All the while on a pleasant stroll on a gorgeous Autumn day! This is just great TV-especially good during lockdown, when all we crave is to get out of the house and visit places outside our bubble! My great grandfather was a master builder and constructed a house in Royal College St (19c) It was acquired compulsorily by the Railway to build the line that goes through the area - they were sad to lose it and as it was for public works apparently got a pittance in return). My granddad died at St Pancras Hospital sadly. But the Pearly Kings of Kings Cross have a statue at St Pancras Cemetery (in N. Finchley - which is used for buriels of locals) - so the connection continues. Thanks for sharing your really great insights x

I have been looking for a a channel like this for ages but none of them have entertained and filled me with knowledge as much as yours. Thank you thank you!! Also if you can recommend any books about the history of london that would be great.

The house in the last killers was a mock up house .
It was at the end of Fredrica Street which ran off The Caledonian Road to to where the road ended just before the southern portal of Copenhagen tunnel.
The first tunnel was gasworks tunnel.
I find it rather ironic that the lady killers picked this location and the unsuspecting Mrs Wilberforce as a short walk down Fredrica Street the Daly was The Ville or Pentonville prison a place where some of not had done a bit of porridge.
    Love your videos.
The richness of London is amazing.

I have also been chased from the new piazza near King's Cross whilst filming for a piece on Camden Council. The headquarters is situated there. I had official blessing to film INSIDE the building, but outside was banned by the jobsworths. I pointed out that others were cavoting near a fountain happily snapping and filming, but the secirity person said it was fine for them but not for me as I had a tripod.

Hey dude! Another brilliant film...right at the end when you're in Argyle Street, you're walking around the same streets that my dad and his brothers and sisters (there were 10 of them all told), grew up on (in the 50's/60's). If you'd walked to Sidmouth Street off the Greys Inn Road, that's where my aunt still lives! Interesting, I know. Thank you as always for a top film.

I once read that the inspiration for the design of Kings Cross station was taken from the Tsar's riding school in Moscow. I don't know if this is true.
I know that this may seem strange to some and perhaps a little bit desperate but I have been experiencing the most awful bouts of acute anxiety and depression for some time now. The anxiety causes me to suffer from horrendous physical pain and suicidal thoughts. Medication can help to reduce the anxiety but the dilemma is that it later intensifies the suicide ideation and mental health services have failed to provide me with the level of support which I feel I need. I made an attempt to take my own life by taking a massive overdose of opioid painkillers just over 8 weeks ago and now contend with the after effects from it.
I would be deeply touched to anyone reading this comment if you would spare me a thought as I try to break out of this hell I am in and find the people who I need to support me. Thank you.

Wasn’t the area called _Battle Bridge_ (over the Fleet) before it became King’s Cross - hence the associations with Boudicca? It’s a superb summary Joolz tremendous work: and _oi_ the hangovers I remember from the raucous chaos of The Church.
Speaking of which, that is of course St Pancras *Old* Church even though it’s a Victorian rebuild: the New Church is the one opposite the fire station on the corner of Eversholt Street and Euston Road with the huge caryatids. I do miss that old an odd wasteland behind the stations where the arches of St Pancras used to stretch back darkly seemingly for ages before they were demolished for the Eurostar.
It sadly comes as no surprise that _The Man Who Never Was_ was a vagrant of Somers Town. This was one of many great countless details I learned. (we all know she’s *really* buried beneath the Tumulus on Hampstead Heath... 😁)

    • @Joolzguides

Great job as always Joolz and team! I learned a few new things about the area and I plan to visit some parts I didn't even know existed! Shame about the over-zealous security guard, they seem to have make issues up out of nothing in order to justify their existence. They could have easily just let you be, it's not as if you were planning the next mega-million heist......were you? :-)

Back in the early noughties I lived in Archway (and thereabouts) and partied hard behind King Cross Station at Bagleys regularly. I remember the straw on the floor for The Church, also went to the Scala quite frequently and a really nice low key bar on the Caledonian Road or was it Pentonville? Forget the name of it now. South of Kings Cross is interesting too, I used to kickbox at a club there around 2004. I wish I took the time to explore all around the UCL area, but it was all about working in the city and getting drunk back then. Memories are hazy but I can't believe how much the whole area has changed. Looking forward to going back one day, I left London and the rat race in 2009, love your channel bringing back lots of memories and regrets about always taking the tube and not doing all that much walking and taking in the history. Never once thought to walk along the canal from Camden 😢 Mind you, probably was a bit grim back then. Anyway, glad to have found your channel, sir.
