How O Holy Night is anti-slavery. Do you know how good this song is?

- O Holy night! The stars are brightly shining
It is the night of our dear Savior's birth
Long lay the world in sin and error pining
'Til He appears and the soul felt its worth
A thrill of hope the weary world rejoices
For yonder breaks a new and glorious morn
Fall on your knees; O hear the Angel voices!
O night divine, O night when Christ was born
O night, O Holy night, O night divine!
Led by the light of Faith serenely beaming
With glowing hearts by His cradle we stand
So led by light of a star sweetly gleaming
Here come the Wise Men from Orient land
The King of kings lay thus in lowly manger
In all our trials born to be our friend
He knows our need, to our weakness is no stranger
Behold your King; before Him lowly bend
Behold your King; before Him lowly bend
Truly He taught us to love one another;
His law is love and His Gospel is Peace
Chains shall He break, for the slave is our brother
And in His name, all oppression shall cease
Sweet hymns of joy in grateful chorus raise we
Let all within us Praise His Holy name
Christ is the Lord; O praise His name forever!
His power and glory evermore proclaim
His power and glory evermore proclaim

But people used the bible as justification for slavery because it supports slavery.
Hatr(e)d towards gays, giving people anxiety at the thought of being tormented and tortured in Hell, giving people depression after being told people are born evil and broken, the amount of terrible marriages that have been caused because of Christianity, people dying because of their reliance on religion instead of science, priests scamming people outta their money, the amount of people forced to stay in abusive relationships because not allowing to divorce, crusades, “witch hunts “ and the ensuing murder of women deemed witches, state churches and the wars between countries in Europe due to religious differences,
The list goes onand on and seems to be a cancer the blight of human existance.
Southern "Christians" defended slavery with the Bible. The Bible tells enslavers they are to treat the enslaved as they would treat themselves. That the enslavers are equal to the enslaved. The Bible tells husbands to submit to their wives.
And we continue to look the other way as "Christians" debase Christ with their unholy antics today.
The Holy Post team is releasing a full movie covering it. I imagine it's going to be amazing. They started off tepid years ago but have gotten more and more prophetic.
My favorite carol since childhood. I’m a Black descendant of slavery and didn’t know about the history of this song. Thanks.
That makes two of us💁🏻♂.
My fiancé comes from a line of slave traders! His grandma fought tooth and nail to not have the slaving block removed from the village! Funny how the USA is vs Africa. It was his grandfather that helped to end slave trading in the family
The slavery is not about racism, but about being in slave to sin.
@@maverickemail5132 it was about both
But did you know that we are decendents of African Hebrews
“Chains shall He break for the slave is my brother.”
Stunning lyrics.
Yeah I don't know what to think about that as lifelong slavery was perfectly acceptable in the Bible. I guess even though they could own slaves the Bible wanted them to be treated well.
@@captainobvious2435John 8:34-36 CEB
[34] Jesus answered, “I assure you that everyone who sins is a slave to sin. [35] A slave isn’t a permanent member of the household, but a son is. [36] Therefore, if the Son makes you free, you really will be free.
When my youngest teen son was leading worship for a Christmas service, he asked what songs I would like. I asked for my fav, "O Holy Night." He protested as it's vocally the most challenging, so I let it go. Anyway, he surprised me by singing it beautifully...
lots of happy Mom tears! ❤️
Yes. My favorite too. And churches do indeed avoid singing it for the very reason you mentioned 😥.
“A thrill of hope, the weary world rejoices” gives me chills every time I hear it. Such a beautiful line
It is an awesome line.
"His law is love and his gospel is peace"...such a beautiful line and my favourite from the song!
Actually, the English lyrics are quite different from the original French. For example; it doesn't start out saying "O holy night". It says "Midnight, Christian". It continues to be different, but still beautiful, all the way through. And it doesn't say "Fall on your knees. O hear the angel voices" either. It Says "People to your knees. Attend your deliverance". Actually, there's no mention of angels at all in the French version. But what I really like is where it calls Jesus "the god- man". The theology is even clearer in the French. But I love the song in either language.
totally agree - the french version says "Il voit un frère où n`était qu'un esclave" ("Il" meaning the subject rédepmoteaur - speaking of God). So this song in it's original intent had more to do with the theological meaning of us being SLAVES to sin. There is a lot of debate on the whether the French or the English led the abolishment on Slavery first, with the french claiming it was the French revolution in the 1790s and England saying they were the first to pass laws in 1806. Considering this song was written by a priest many years later, I think it has more to do with THEOLOGICAL reasons in Romans 6 that the original author put in, that we can no longer be slaves to sin and our relationship with God was restored when Jesus was born and subsequently died on the cross for our sins. The English translator, however, did pen a line that resonated with abolitionists and if it helped, great, but I don't agree with Mike that it was to help the abolishment of slavery. Good clickbait though.
@@ChristianCareerJoy Maybe, but it's well-established that the original French author was also anti-slavery.
@@hotwax9376 do you speak French? Because I’m basing my understand of the lyrics as I’m a native French speaker..the lyrics are not point to abolishing slavery, they are pointing Jesus, who sets us free from slavery sin, regardless of race, we are all slaves to sin. Let’s stop putting “woke” agendas where the attention should be on God and what he did for us.
@@ChristianCareerJoy First, just because the French author may have been intending to describe slavery to sin doesn't mean he wasn't against literal slavery. In fact, it's quite well-documented that he was. That doesn't mean he was trying to condemn it in the song, but the point remains.
Second, antislavery activism has nothing to do with being woke, contrary to what leftist historical revisionists will tell you. Antislavery activists tried to reform society, not dismantle it as actual woke leftists do. In America, it was actually conservatives who were the most antislavery, particularly those of a religious and/or pro-business bent.
@@ChristianCareerJoy - Is being anti-slavery "woke"? If so, may all of us Christians be woke in that area. 👍
I LOVE this song!! My favorite Christmas song, it's SO beautiful. I weep often while singing.
I can’t hear or sing without tearing up. My favorite too ☺️
Yes ❤
Praise His Name Forever
This has been my favorite song since I was a little girl! I would get all teary- eyed even when I was little.... still love it today. Praise God!
"And in His name all oppression shall cease" gets me every time. 🙌
Absolutely my favorite Christmas song. The “Christ is the lord” line always makes me teary eyed. It’s simple but the truth of the statement hits so deep
Amazing Christmas carol! One thing that gets me every time I hear it sung in French is how the first chorus says "Fall on your knees, Wait for your deliverance!", but then the final chorus ends with, "Rise to your feet, Sing of your deliverance!" I just love those two responses to Christ's birth!
A good friend of mine and I played a piano duet of "O Holy Night" last Christmas, arranged by Lloyd Larsen. This piece will forever have a special place in my heart, as we played in for church on Christmas Eve in 2022. The entirety of last fall as we were preparing the duet, I carried with me in my heart the words of the second verse, "Sweet hymns of joy in grateful chorus raise we. Let all within us praise His holy name!" Christmas is about the JOY of celebrating the birth of Jesus.
Favorite Christmas song. I cry just about every time.
I'm having this played at my funeral. I want all my non believing relatives singing it regardless if it's not Christmas. The words hit my heart and soul and render me to my knees. God bless you brother Mike.
Tell them that the person who wrote the music,Adolphe Adam, was a secular composer. That might appease them a bit as they sing.
@@horridhenry9920 He was also Jewish. And the author of the lyrics later left Christianity entirely and became a socialist. IMO, that doesn't mean we can't or shouldn't sing the song, just as the fact that the author of "It is Well With My Soul" also later apostatized doesn't make that song any less good or appropriate for worship.
Jesus was actually born in the fall and it's played in the winter so you can play it anytime!
@@earthmama9597 We actually don't know for sure when Jesus was born.
@@hotwax9376 I’m an atheist ;I love the song and sing it, badly, when I attend carol services.
"O Holy Night" is my favorite Christmas song and objectively one of the most beautiful songs ever written.
I wonder if Mike is even aware that this song was originally written for midnight mass? Maybe there's hope even for Mike since he likes this song so much. I honestly didn't think he would 🤔
@@resetsetmefree478I was introduced to this song in 7th grade choir. It's been my favorite Christmas song since. I always wondered why we never sang it in church and couldn't find it in the hymnal. You have answered my question. Even tho it was written for Midnight Mass, there isn't a better more worshipful Christmas song ever! Be Protestant or Catholic, it shouldn't matter! I sing this song every year and am teaching it to my granddaughters. O Holy Night will always be my favorite!
@@tommie827 edit: you said you have granddaughters so I guess we're around the same age lol 😆
A truly anointed worship song - my absolute favourite. The verse fall on my knees brings me to tears and gratitude that Jesus would come to save me. Thank you Jesus for leaving the majesty of heaven and coming to earth fully divine and fully human to seek me - I love you x
Such a beautiful and deep hymn. I’m with you!! What I love most is that EVERY knee will bow and every tongue confess He is Lord. Thank you for all your work for Him and the kingdom!
O Holy Night has been my favorite Christmas song since I was a young shy girl in high school band playing trumpet, and my band director insisted I take the trumpet solo. I almost didn't take the solo because of my shyness, but I'm so glad that I did.
This song has always been my favorite song for Christmas but now I have a whole new perspective on it! It will be my favorite all year long! Praises to our King
At my university, we preform O Holy Night every year at our Christmas Concert. Our School of Music Dean sings it beautifully, and I really have to hold myself back from crying. (And I’m in the choir so if I cry, everyone will see me.) Not my favorite, that title goes to Joy to the World, but definitely up there. Beautiful, beautiful song musically and lyrically.
This is my favorite Christmas song. Now I love it even more
This song always brings me to tears. I love it. I am so full of love for God when I sing it♡
Focusing on the lyrics can change a song for us. Good and bad.
My absolute favorite Christmas song of all time! I remember when I first heard the lyrics “chains shall He break” and “Christ is the Lord that ever, ever praise we”. It stirred my heart and I have loved this song so much since.
O Holy Night has long been my most favorite Xmas Song!! Brings me to tears when done w appropriate passion and sincerity. “The soul felt it’s worth “, is so beautiful! The metzo forte and the highs and lows and emotion of the whole melody just leaves me in tears.
It’s Christmas brother. Don’t leave Christ out of the holiday, it’s what it’s all about! ❤️
They had such a poetic way with words in times past.
Many still do today, if you know where to look for it.
@clintonwilcox4690 Do share.
This is, hands down, my favorite Christmas song! And for all of the reasons Mike points out here! I had ways heard the song but I didn't really hear the lyrics or pay attention until I was an adult and I listened to it on a Harry Connick Jr. album. The way he sang it struck a chord because you could hear the sincerity in his voice (later on i found out he's a Christian). But the lyrics are so beautiful and it touches my heart to sing it and moves me to worship and gratitude for who He is❤ I can never be thankful enough, but this always makes me want to praise Him more.
Listen to Kerrie Roberts version!
Wow. I just bought an ornament with O Holy Night on it to display in my kitchen. It's even more special now. Thank you, Mike for sharing. I will do a family devotional to share what I've learned here. My favorite line is, "His Gospel is peace." Only Jesus provides true peace between God and man.
A wonderful song for any season. As believers, we were once slaves to darkness, but have been set free by Christ Jesus; The Light of the world. Amen! 🕊
I can't sing that song without tearing up. So good.
AMEN!!!!! I love this song so much!!!!! One of my favorite Christmas hymns ever!!!!!! ❤
It was at night. The shepherds were watching "their flocks by NIGHT". And the angel said, "for unto you is born THIS day". The new day started at nightfall. If he had been born before nightfall, it would have been the previous day. Not important, but I think that's right unless I'm overlooking something.
Interesting.
Thanks for this. God bless
I have precious memories of my Belgian friend (now in heaven) playing this on piano, and singing the original French words with her in church at Christmas Eve Mass. The title often used in French is "Minuit Chretien".
This song pulls me into worship every time I sing it. Beautiful.
It’s my favorite Christmas worship song! I absolutely love it! 🙏🏽❤
Look up the story behind "I heard the bells on Christmas Day.
Sugar Creek Baptist Church in Sugarland JUST did this sermon yesterday!
Christina Grimmie did the best cover of this song I’ve ever heard. And now she’s with Jesus. It’s moving to listen to.
“The beauty of the Cross is that is it saved us from the sin of slavery and the slavery of sin”~ Lisa Fields
I’m actually shocked at how many ppl didn’t know the meaning of this song.
They probably only play the 1st verse..
Always been my favorite. The arrangements by David Phelps to Josh Groban just hit hard. The creschendos and build up "fall on your knees, oh, hear the angel voices" gives me goose bumps every time.
This is such a beautiful song! “And in His name, All oppression shall cease.”
It’s so good to imagine a God who fights for freedom and who brings comfort those who are oppressed because God’s power is on the side of helping those who struggle. (It makes me think of Ecclesiastes 4)
The "Christian" Christmas carols are the best. Although I like them all. Hark the Herald is another great one, as it deals with salvation. Linus explains it to Charlie Brown if you aren't following the lyrics to the song.
Can't go wrong with Charles Wesley (referring to "Hark").
I've heard..from someone, that Christmas Carol's are red, & green
The RED ones, are the hymns like this one, SILENT NIGHT, JOY TO THE WORLD
The GREEN ones, are
JINGLE BELLS,
DECK THE HALLS etc
“He appeared, and the soul felt its worth” is a line that always strikes me. It’s been one of my favorite songs for as long as i can remember, glad to know that my love is justified 😂
This is probably my favorite Christmas song and it is wonderful to hear about the anti-slavery aspects to it and how that relates to God's word and how God loves us
My favorite Christmas carol, song, hymn of all time.
Fall on your knees 😢😢😢
With you on this sacred Christmas song!! It’s holy in all ways!!❤️🔥✝️🕊️
I was telling one of my student's about this last week as they'd only ever heard the first verse. They were really impacted by it.
Always was my favorite Christmas song.
We’re actually singing that song tomorrow for our school’s winter concert.
Hands down my all-time favorite Christmas song. It has been since I was a child. It touches me on such a deep level - it always has!
My favorite Christmas song ever!🙌❤️
This is probably my favorite Christmas hymn.
My beautiful daughter sang it tonight in Chrismas eve service. Her husband and twin babies a daughter and a son listened. Happy Christmas.
I went to the Christmas event at my Mom's church, they did O Holy Night and it was great
Thank you for this breakdown. My favorite Christmas song!
My favorite song....even more so now
It's cool, that both men were abolitionists as well.
The liberals wants us to get rid of this history😢
Learned this in French class, although we only did the first verse ... still one of my favs.
I praise God for the high quality videos you make!!
Glad to hear you explicate this fine song. The first time I sang it was 1963 in my high school chorus. Our enlightened director delved into it much like you have. So, I have had 60 years of thrills whenever I hear this song. That's a blessing.
I heard this song first time in about 2010… I know, where have I been? And here I thought it’s a modern Christmas song!?😂 it’s such a beatiful song!!
It has always been my favorite Christmas song to sing, with God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen as a close second.
Me too those two! God bless!
This is also my favorite Christmas song. Hauntingly beautiful!
Bless you brother...I love the way you had me understand the song more..
A circle in a circle within a circle that never ends
In the simple God is proven
This is one of my favorite Christmas songs as well, probably tied with Hark the Herald, which also has beautiful theology instilled into poetry.
I love this song! Thanks for the deep-dive. So glad I found this channel. God bless!
Great video! Love the song! God bless you brother and your ministry! To God be All the Glory!
I love that I just found your talk/explanation of O HolyNight . It’s always been a favorite of mine, but this Christmas Dan Vasc ( a UA-cam vocalist) , knocked it out of the park! He did a glorious rendition that brings to life exactly what you were talking about! You need to check it out! He does a growl and special effects on the line “ let all within us praise His Holy Name!” - it’s like even the sin within us will praise Him!
I Love this song so much. My favorite Christmas song. ❤ Thanks for enlighten me on the history.
I love it even more now💕
Get tingles every time I sing it. Spectacular message of hope.
Thank You! You have articulated everything I've known for years as a Performer, but hadn't the ability to explain what I loved to proclaim in song.
Thanks Pastor Mike for your ministry I'm a regular listener of 20 questions
God bless you at this Christmas Season
Great video Mike, I’ve never really paid close attention to the lyrics of this song. I think it’s my favorite Christmas song now too.
I love God's prophets that show us how this world will be in the future. Thank you GOD
Jeremiah 10: 1-8
Love this!!
Thank you for your faithfulness.
Always been my favorite Christmas song ❤
Certainly, a hidden revelation.
Thank you for sharing this profound truth. ❤
This has always been my fav Christmas song
I agree! This has been my favorite Christmas song for a long time now. Thank you for the history and wonderful video. 🙌👑
Yeah this is the absolute best Christmas “Carol” (if you wanna call it that when it’s more of a song of praise) ever I think. I’ve always liked it the most.
Thank you for helping me appreciate and enjoy even more a beautiful Christmas hymn I already loved.
My favorite Christmas hymn too...always!
Thanks for sharing 🙏🏾
His grace and mercy be upon you and your loved ones 🕊️🥛🍯
Made me cry! Blessings....
This is my favorite Christmas song. I believe that you're describing verse 3 of the song in this video. Very powerful and moving.
I’m so happy you made this video because this is also my favorite Christmas song by far
This has always been one of my Favorite Christmas carols. Thank you for sharing the history of the song it just makes me love it more.
I love the way that you broke down the meaning of O Holy Night because I never looked at it from the perspective that it was an anti slavery song. O Holy Night has been my favorite Christmas hymn since I was a tween, mid fifties now. So, I appreciate this video.😉👍🏽
Beautiful! Loved the letter, now wanna hear it sung. Gonna search it. Thank you Pr Winger
My favourite Christmas song 🙏
Thanks for discussing my very favorite Christmas song!❤️
This is the favorite Christmas song for many Norwegians, sung by the Swedish opera singer Jussi Björling in Swedish, «O, helga natt». You find it on UA-cam. It’s an old, beautiful recording.
Yes. We sang it at Calvary Chapel Edmonds, WA yesterday!
Thank you for this Pastor Mike!!!
The first time I really paid attention to the lyrics of this song was when I heard Celine Dion sing it. I was only 15, but I was completely overwhelmed, and ever since it's been my favorite Christmas song.
Thanks! The writer of “ I Heard The Bells in Christmas Day” Carrying a similar Story Song who was also an Abolitionist.
❤❤❤❤ i want this song sang at my funeral thats how much i looove it. Not just a Christmas song to mee. Just like "mary did u know?", also not just a Christmas song to mee. Both soooo beautiful.
Divine inspiration is a herald of God's glory. The world would be at a loss if doubt dampened Placide Cappeau's faith. I encourage my brothers and sisters to be strong in faith and to trust in God, and to nurture the seeds he has planted within them to bloom unto the glory of God. 😊
Cappeau actually did apostatize from Christianity later and became a socialist.
He didn't have divine inspiration. Perhaps he was inspired by an adversarial spirit being. 😈
