The Lord has really been working with me in my self discipline AND coffee is definitely a part of this conversation. Only because I tend to have an attitude of “I can’t manage my life UNTIL I have my coffee” or I can’t deal with my kids until I’ve had my coffee” and this is terrible because the Lord is my strength NOT the coffee.

@@m.willow11 The issue is that it becomes a controlling habit. And one only starts to notice, when you can't have it. Same with sugar. I don't think sugar is a problem in itself, neither caffeine. But the thing with those substances is that they become to quick available in the body and that gives a kick. Forms a habit and then tries to control you. Weird experiences. I recall fasting and then suddenly was totally disinterested in it. Restored good blood circulation as well as clearer thinking. But the passions of the flesh will come back as soon as they get a chance to do so. So something else must happen. And I find it sad that this isn't taught more detailed by ministries.

I have really been blessed by a book by Dr. Christopher G. Fairburn called Overcoming binge eating 2nd edition.

I already felt a conviction and feeling that I shouldn't because snacking on foods has become a point of attention and idol, even when I'm not committing gluttony, I am constantly longing for something to satisfy my flesh. I've noticed over the last week that I either have to have a drink that's caffeinated, a soda, food, or video and other forms of entertainment to keep me sustained. Are you sure that is obsession rather than that your body needs some minerals? The only way it knows to inform you about lack is to send a signal- "eat, i need minerals from food". For example when you want sweets or sugar probably your zink level is too low. And etc. In other words you should control not only your needs, but also shouldn't blame yourself too much. Thats what some people do with mazochistic addiction/pleasure.

For me, the need is a necessity of something to act/function properly, thou you still can do some activity at a cost of health. For example, when you need to wc typically you can hold things for a while, but that's not good. When some say they are addicted to sugar it's not always because of seeking pleasure, but rather lack of minerals is understood by your body as attraction to sweets. There is a need, just wrongly understood by person.

Coffee is a psychoactive drink. A socially acceptable psychoactive drink, but it is one nonetheless. There's a high and a come-down period. Like any drug, it has a place in either benefitting or hurting its consumer. So my own rule of thumb is to treat it like a tool. I don't drink coffee unless I'm adequately hydrated and have enough sleep (both recommended by any health professional). I only drink it if I need to focus and get a lot done faster than I'm normally capable of. It's also a mood-booster, so it's great for getting out of a slump in tandem other healthy methods.

this is rheotoric and garbage rheotoric. there is caffeine in chocolate too Window... tell me you don't eat ANY chocolate. Actually look at the meta analysis studies. Coffee IS hyper beneficial on cognitive and physical longevity in human studies long term. the SIN issue is separate, can you quit today for a month cold turkey? If yes, no worries. If not, you need to look at sin.
SUGAR consumption has the exact same effect on the brain as cocaine. Do you give your kids candy? might as well be cocain then. And im being sarcastic but mildly serious, MOST american christians will have an issue with coffee, but then be extremely obese slobs that put away enough food to end world hunger.
So directly answering your objection, sugar and carbs do worse than your direct example than caffeine, coffee consumption DOES lead to longevity in meta-analysis. Sugar doesn't. Do you consume carbs? What is your current weight and height?

Anyone who thinks coffee is sinful is too legalistic and will be no friend of mine.
You are saved by Gospel not by deeming everything you don't like a sin. And if someone is avoiding every single tiny little mundane thing completely ignoring the fact that Christ has already paid the penalty, then they have completely missed the mark. We are not bound by sin. So once converted by gospel, yes definitely act like a Christian and steer away from sin and temptation, and if something like coffee gets in the way of your relationship with God then by all means kiss coffee goodbye! But being that legalistic enough to think something like coffee is a sin is just foolish.
Edit: I read some of these appalling comments and my favorite one was the argument "coffee is a psychoactive substance so drinking it is a sin." I don't recall the bozos name that posted this but it made me chuckle.
If that's your argument then everytime Jesus drank wine, he sinned. And if that's something you think Jesus is capable of doing (that being sin) then you really need to re-evaluate your belief in the Christian Orthodoxy.

I have extreme sleep apnea, which I have to manage consistently just to be able to function in everyday life. I depended heavily on energy drinks for about 10 years when I had to work 3rd shift/swing shift jobs. They caused a lot of problems for my health.
Since I started researching good sleep habits, I’ve made a lot of changes. For instance you shouldn’t have any caffeine until your cortisol levels drop, around mid-morning, because your body becomes dependent on the caffeine and your cortisol production is thrown off. It’s recommended to drink 20-30 fl oz of water before any caffeine consumption as early as possible after waking up to counteract dehydration from sleep.
Also caffeine takes up to 10 hours to stop having an effect, so again if I need to be in bed by 9:30 PM, I need to stop drinking caffeine by around 11 AM so I can hit my melatonin window and get to sleep naturally. So my window for drinking coffee is roughly 9:30-11:30 AM and that’s it for the day. I make a pour over before I leave for my workday and carry it with me for my mid-morning break. (I love my Fellow travel mugs!)
I haven’t tried it yet, but I read an article about taking a week off every month to cut out caffeine entirely as a way to reset your body’s sensitivity to caffeine. The idea is that when you start drinking caffeine again, it will have a greater effect in lesser quantities. Drinking a couple cups of coffee first thing in the morning feels nice, but you’re also compounding the effects of dehydration, caffeine dependency instead of cortisol, and decreasing sensitivity to the caffeine.
I’m also a coffee nerd with my own coffee “lab” at home where I experiment with all kinds of brewing methods. I really enjoy when I can take the time to produce a nice cup of coffee and then sit down in my grandfather’s old recliner for a quiet Bible study. To me that’s a wonderful use of time. I also see coffee making as a way to commune with God and honor the commission to “subdue the earth” by making something good with what He gave us - the earth and our creativity.
Being addicted to coffee and depending on it means we’re doing something wrong and some things are out of balance. Wisdom needs to be applied everywhere in our lives and they need to be submitted to order. But that makes room for enjoying life rather than reacting to it.

I wanna encourage anyone who’s thinking of decreasing their coffee intake; it has honestly improved my life so much.
I wasn’t even severely addicted but I gave caffeine up for lent and noticed I was somewhat dependent. 😂
I was having coffee twice a day in the past and just felt SO tired in the mornings (even tho I did the “right” thing where you wait until you’ve been awake for 2 hours before having it). I used to be a morning person and wasn’t rly anymore (I thought it was cause I was “getting old”. I’m 22 LOL).
When I gave up coffee, I noticed a few weeks in that I became a morning person again, I was sleeping SO SO much better, didn’t have the “brain fog” I was used to having so I was able to be so much more present with people.
I know I needed to continue this habit. Post lent, I only have coffee on the weekends and on holidays or other special occasions as a treat! I’ve found this to be a good balance, but even if you start just having less coffee a day or maybe every second day, I’m sure over time you’ll notice the benefits!

Sadly we have unmarried couples living together calling themselves Christian. Porn addiction, drugs, alcohol, false teachings. Phone and internet addiction is ravaging the youth. Young people barely touch their Bibles and have a hard time remembering who is who from the Bible. Quoting from Scripture from memory is a pretty rare thing. My pet peeve about coffee though, is people coming in the church with their morning coffee like they walk into a cinema or something. They can have it at home and bless the Lord for it.

For anyone who enjoys coffee but doesn’t want much caffeine, drink 100% Arabica! Robusta has double the caffeine and because it’s cheaper for now, it’s what most coffee chains will fill their blends with. Go to a specialty coffee shop and/or buy your own coffee to brew. Try opting for a slow brew device like a V60 so that you take time to appreciate each cup and you’re not just downing multiple. Make it a relaxing treat rather than a convenient boost!

I drink one cup of coffee in the morning and that's it. Too much caffeine is bad for me and it can negatively affect my sleep. One cup is lovely. I usually sip on it while I read my Bible in the morning and snuggle with my sweet puppy 💕
My husband on the other hand..... He has cut down, but he still drinks so much coffee every day. He was diagnosed with ADHD a few years ago, and we realized his coffee drinking was really his way of self-medicating.
I will say I would rather have him drink coffee than take Adderall or any other stimulant drugs to treat his ADHD. Those medications have serious side effects. And they made him irritable and have major crashes in the evening. So now he treats it with B vitamins, coffee, and exercise. Much better.

    • @Dargonhuman
      @Dargonhuman 4 місяці тому +1

I'm pretty sure that's exactly what 1 Corinthians 6:12 is speaking to - the prescription meds weren't helpful in that the side effects left your husband in a worse state, which were dominating him, but the ADHD could also be seen as a dominating force, so if the coffee helps subdue the ADHD and give him control of his life, then it has become helpful.
Of course, we should always put our faith in the Lord to heal us of our afflictions, I wouldn't want anyone to think I'm saying otherwise, but sometimes the Lord will give us what we need to be healed in ways we don't expect. In your husband's case, coffee appears to be part of that. At the very least, coffee beans are part of His creation (as opposed to artificial man-made pharmaceuticals at any rate), so using it responsibly to mitigate ADHD isn't sinful, just as someone using marijuana to manage chronic pain isn't sinning so long as they're not overindulging to get high. The Lord has given us natural remedies like coffee, marijuana and other medicinal plants to use for our benefit and to help test our resolve and develop our self control while using them.

    • @bunny_0288

@@Dargonhuman I completely agree. And because of his ADHD, caffeine does not affect him the way it affects most people. He can drink a cup of coffee at 10 pm and go to sleep. It actually helps him calm down because ADHD makes his brain work differently. So stimulants calm his hyperactivity. It's fascinating to me because I am so sensitive to caffeine. If I have coffee after 2-3 pm I will be up all night.
I know for myself many times I will pray and ask God to heal me from some affliction, and He will guide me to a way to treat it with His creation. I'm so thankful for all of the herbs and medicinal plants the Lord created for us.

That's a great verse for this topic! It goes well with Galatians 5:9 "A little leaven leavens the whole lump of dough." If we allow a "small" sin into our lives, it will inevitably lead to bigger sins taking over our lives, so by sweating the "small stuff", we keep all sin away.

Ultimately this is a more of a personal conviction issue rather than a blanket rule for each Christian especially since coffee affects each person differently. Of course we are to be sober minded, self-controlled, and submit our bodies as a living sacrifice to Jesus, however, if the Bible allows for consumption of alcohol, then certainly drinking coffee is acceptable since it doesn't impair judgement. On the notion that having caffine withdraw symptoms means there is an underlying lack of self control, a few questions are worth considering. Does elimination of caffeine withdrawal symptoms by slowly decreasing caffeine intake constitute self control and a lack of sin? Are people who experience very minor withdraw symptoms showing lack of self control? Are people who drink coffee daily and never experience withdrawal symptoms showing self control or dependency? As with anything, moderation is the key. On a side note, many people overlook or are unaware that coffee has many health benefits.

So much introspection, until a few years ago I broke out of that cycle. Personally, when I come face to face with God on my last day I don't believe that He will be concerned with how much coffee I drink, how much food I eat or how much exercise I should be doing, etc. etc. if it is a problem he will work those things out in His time. It is a process. Feeling guilty actually only makes thing worse! INSTEAD God will be asking me, did you love your family, or your brother or sister as yourself? Did you feed the hungry? Did you help those in need when you saw it? or give those who were thirsty a drink (which I believe is giving them the gospel at the time when they need it, when they are thirsty not shoving it down their throats). I have got to the point where I won't fall into a guilt trip for every small mistake because in the scheme of things it actually doesn't matter.

A friendly reminder: :) I suggest you read some articles on ADHD, ASD and TS and stimming behavior. Then let's have a productive and balanced and healthy conversation about how various neurological and mental disorders and diseases ties together to a plain and simple self-control issue or not.
I REALLY REALLY do appreciate your teaching gift. It's been an enormous blessing to me and those around me even. But me and you should have a conversation about how you several times imply that severe neurological and mental disorders - where the sufferer have close to NO chance of exercising this self control without a ton of correct professional help. What you have in the past - and also now refer to as self control issues, are in many cases very severe illnesses that has the consequences of among other things an apparent lack of self control.
However - putting this yoke on those people who suffers from these things - implying it's a sinful behavior when you are talking about issues more or less totally out of the individual's control - that's not very wise. And it's incorrect. You are first pulling a text out of context here by applying a text about self control to disorders like anorexia (and you imply others) when you are not taking into account that for a lot of these sufferers - not all the self control collectively available in the univers would make it possible for them to just will themselves out of the disorder.
Lack of impulse control in untreated ADHD is one of the things that are often is a source of shame for the sufferers because they are told they just need to pull themselves togethere and muster the self control to not be impulsive. While the truth is that the impulsive behavior is in many cases the result of a brain trauma or premature birth, or inherited from the parents.
If these children and adults that you - and you really can't say you don't - imply to live a lifestyle without displaying self control - aren't successful in willing themselves out of the behavior - are they then living in sinful behavior? Does that mean they don't get to heaven?
I can pull up tons of more examples of this. If this is really what you mean - I'd like you to say it. That these sufferers of various disorders outside of their control are living in sin. Coz that implies that they are not saved. It would be useful for you to REALLY think this through. And if you don't agree with my painting of your intentions in this - please,I'd like you to also say that. Because this clip most certainly makes it look like you are saying that having anorexia is possibly living in sinful behavior. Which you gotta really build a case for me to accept.
I wish you no harm, disrespect or anything - I am not a random troll - I'm just a person who happens to know quite a few things about how many of these conditions effects human beings and how easy or hard / impossible it is to just display self control, and I think these matters are at best unwisely handled by you.
Self harming behavior is not about self control or not. There are underlying issues, problems and illnesses that need to be treated, and maybe after tackling it correctly, either God heals you or you are getting helped by medicine - maybe after that it will be possible to display this self control you talk about. But in the meantime, it is VERY REAL that it is impossible for many. And tell me with good conscience that you believe God is refering to these situations in scripture?
Again - I say this with respect. I think you need to correct this tendency you have to be very casual and naive when it comes to real disease. If I brok your legs so you could not walk or stand on them - Should I just tell you to display some self control and stand up? pull yourself together? It is actually even more impossible for people with some conditions to display self control than you standing up and walking on both your broken legs.
I hope you didn't fall off while reading this - And if you are on Mike's staff and mike isn't reading this himself, and you read it - please make sure he reads it. I will be available for further positive, non hostile, productive and balanaced conversation if mike wants to. Because this is not just a random thing that can be ignored - I'm pointing out some issues that will help you avoid putting shame on people where there should be no shame. And also help you realize you need to avoid to play with people's assurance of salvation by implying what you imply.
Some times it's real. Sometimes it's a matter of self control. In the cases and examples above, we do disagree tho, and if you are wrong it will actually effect your credibility as a teacher, and you should at least consider my words and take them to you if not for anything else than making absolutely sure you feel you are on solid ground where you stand.
Make sense? I wish you all well and I hope your fatigue and stuff continues to improve. Don't mistake this for hostility or trolling. I wish you all well and thank you for all you are doing. Thank you, have a nice day.
    - regards from hoth.

It might be a cultural thing but to me it feels a bit like accusations of not showing respect in a debate or conversation when u say I put words in people's mouth.

I did this with grace and respect imho. This is called correcting. And there are no way for me to correct him in private. Therefore I do it as friendly as possible in public and hope nobody including him takes it the wrong way.
Mike has been known to take corrections, change his mind on biblical matters etc. This is why I am appealing to him like this. If I wasn't sure he would be open for legit correction I would not bother.

However, the trick is to know how when you cross the line between general advice and specifics. Thats the best I can do on explaining this to you.
It looks like tho that you are kinda missing my points and nuances, and its not meant to be rude, but if I were you I'd reread what I wrote and try to understand it instead of following your first impulse- which was to criticize me instead of thinking maybe there is a legit point or two in there.

Hoth, I agree with you, and thank God you have spoken with respect and knowledge of the issue. The Christian community needs pastors and teachers like Mike, who I respect, to think through what you have asked. Here is one example of how the church fails on this. I am sitting in Sunday school class and the study is on our identity in Christ, how we should see ourselves? The book we are using specifically brings up anorexia and bullimea and lumps it all together with vain things women do to make themselves more attractive. And as you point out Hoth we were told it's basically your fault if you can't stop doing those bad behaviors. If there were someone in the room who had any of the early symptoms of anorexia or bullimea they would have felt ashamed rather than feeling that they are in a safe caring place.
God bless you in your work.

I personally have a couple of anxiety disorders and a perfectionist streak, so maybe those contribute, but I often feel that I need to let go of the little things so that I don’t get wrapped up in them and controlled by the fear of messing up. Not letting go in the sense of giving into sin (at least I try not to), but more so trying to lean into a sense of trust in the grace of God and in Him helping me to do well. If you have any advice on how to take every thought captive and hand them over to God without getting caught in spiraling worries about doing the right thing, I’d very much appreciate it! I know you’re not a therapist, but I like hearing people’s (especially Biblically-based) 2 cents. Thank you!

If you want a healthy way to get a boost of energy in the morning try this: take your shower warm as usual but for the last 30 seconds to 1 minute just crank the temperature as cold as it can go. This will wake you right up and even though it will be hard for like the first 2 or 3 times you do it you’ll quickly get used to it and it has numerous benefits for your health.

After 38 years Mormon and finally coming to Christ outside of that institution, I just have to say I am loving daily morning coffee dates with my wife before the kids wake up. I agree that moderation is important. I probably would get headaches without it at this point. Will test watering it down more :)

One cup of coffee a day isn't unhealthy fyi. Doubt you would have withdrawal symptoms from stopping one cup a day. Besides, I don't understand how the presence of withdrawal symptoms indicate that the thing itself is bad. Some types of medication have withdrawal symptoms when you stop. There are withdrawal symptoms if you stop eating sugar. There are withdrawal symptoms if you stop eating carbs. Those things aren't bad.

Literally had this conversation yesterday around a table with a couple people but it was about caffeinated soft drinks and we talked about how if how quickly you become dependent and how you get headaches if you stop. For me I think I’m going to have to make a rule I don’t drink caffeine two days in a row. I avoided it almost all last year. I think it was all the sweet tea available to me during the holidays that I quickly became dependent.

I don't know if sugar has anything to do with it, but I have a quiete strong cappacino in the morning that is a about 50% bigger than a normal mug in volume. It's my only coffee for the day.
It would have at least the same or more than the amount of caffeine your soda drinks have, but I don't add sugar when I'm making it. I don't get any withdrawal symptoms if I don't have any for a few days or more

As someone with ADHD, who needs a stimulant just to be a normal functioning human being, coffee is “helpful” to me. I will drink it because it helps me be a good homeschooling Momma with energy to persevere throughout the day, and then energy to provide a hot meal for the husband when he gets home. Just as the right amount of food gives me energy, so too does coffee.
For me, it is controlled. I drink only two cups, and always have.
Please drink your coffee if you need it, brothers and sisters. ☕️☕️☕️

Thanks for the honest and clear-headed approach. I have a rather ascetic mindset where I take it as a challenge to see how much I can do without, but I think the Lord gave us certain things to enjoy in moderation, like coffee. If we can't enjoy it with thankfulness but instead feel an overpowering urge to use and abuse something, then maybe it's time for that thing to go.

If you are unsure if your relationship to coffee, or anything else, is unhealthy or sinful, just give it up for a period of time and see how you react. It's better to know if something is a problem for you, because then you can be more intentional and disciplined with how you interact with it.

If you feel you need the coffee or have a physical impairment when not drinking it, then you definitely need to get rid of it. That is a sin. But I drink orange juice every morning and I don't feel a physical or mental addiction and can quite easily stop. So that's not a sin.
On a note about having energy. The more time I spend in the LORD and the closer I get with the Holy Spirit, the more energy I feel I have and the less sleep I feel I need. I get a supernatural strength from his presence. The first time I got filled with Holy Spirit I was only sleeping a few hours a night and felt fully refreshed for two weeks. I'm getting back to that point now, slowly but surely.

    3. Why do we ingest coffee? For It’s flavor and dietary supplements?
    4. Where should we derive our energy from?
    5. What underlying dietary, behavioral, and spiritual problems do we try and power though or mask with stimulants and depressants?

Agreed. When it comes to coffee, been addicted to it for quite many years, always needing a cup to push me through and prevent a migraine, but now have backed off my daily cup and only drink occasionally.
I wonder how this could apply to medication. I take a medication that I, in the fullest extent, need to be able to sleep. I have severe insomnia issues. If I don’t take the pill, I don’t sleep, and if I do, it’ll only be for like 1-2 hours. I guess this would be okay, since it is a blessing to my life, and fixes what is biologically broken.

I once had a pastor who sinned on account of coffee. There was coffee in the fellowship hall and kitchen area for everyone, but it was pretty cheap stuff. The pastor got the elders to agree to add special, higher-grade coffee to the budget JUST FOR HIM. he kept it separated so everyone else in the church still only got the basic coffee.
This was also just a day after he straight up said he didn't like the current coffee but shouldn't ask for better coffee because that would mean he was focused too much on the coffee.

Well, there’s days if I don’t have coffee till later in the day, I feel the need for it. Then there’s days where if I don’t have till later I’m totally fine with that. For me-being 69 now, I need the energy, yet I’ve cut down in the last five years or so figuring too much is not good for my heart. I also need it (as one way along with other things) to help fight constipation (I know it’s not the only thing you can do for that), which does help. ☕️

I drink one strong coffee a day, in the morning, especially during the week to kick off the day. But often during the weekend I will skip both days. But if I don't have it there's no headaches etc.
I may soon fast from it.
Your advice concerning addictions is very wise. It can apply to anything like computer games for instance.
I also really love your advice about watching everything that comes out of your mouth as well as what you listen to or watch... also jump on your thoughts quickly when they run off the track. As the proverb says, keep thy heart with all diligence, for out of it are the issues of life.
We're living in a fallen world which was flooded by demons.
Satan is the god of this world (2 Corinthians 4:4).
We are constantly and subtly under constant attack by the adversary and his cohorts (1 Peter 5:8).
