- Feeding raw food to your dogs can be overwhelming and a bit intimidating.
Some of us feel we won't be able to give our dogs the right nutrients or balanced nutrients if we feed our dogs a raw diet.
While there is some learning involved with feeding your dog a natural, whole, fresh food diet, there are some great tricks that will help you and your dog be healthy and happy on a raw food diet.
Tripe is almost a magical food ingredient for dogs. Tripe can be fed to dogs who are on either a 100% raw diet, a part raw and part kibble diet or a dog who is fed a kibble diet. No matter what food your dog is eating, tripe will help your dog in so many ways.
Watch our video all about tripe and find out what the good bad and smelly aspects of feeding tripe to your dog is all about.
At Van Isle Doodles, our puppies are weaned to a raw food diet that includes tripe. Our labradoodle puppies all thrive eating tripe as well as our adult labradoodles and our breeding labradoodles.

Amazing info..thanks .keep videos coming
Thank-you! We will be adding more information that we hope is helpful to many people and their doggies.
Claire....You are amazing❤️
Well thank-you!
Thank you so much for all your videos, we are becoming new parents to our labradoodle for Xmas eve and have been watching them diligently.
I hope that the videos help you out and congratulations on your new puppy!
Best Green Tripe video I have seen. Well done!
Thanks so much! I hope your dog enjoys tripe!
Wow! Im amazed at all the food dogs need to keep them healthy😊
Just like people. Each food contains something that benefits your dog. If you don't offer them a variety of food items then their diet will be lacking in something. Once one thing is out of balance then others follow suit. Before you know it, your dog no longer is thriving but just surviving.
Thanks Claire. Much appreciated. We had to say good bye to our golden doodle, Grover on Tuesday Nov 3....who managed to make her 15th birthday on Oct. 31st., but she did tend to have ear infections that surely could have benefited from this info.
Oh Corie I am so very sorry to hear of your loss. I know how devastating this must be for you. My deepest condolences. You are in my heart and thoughts.
@@VanIsleDoodles Thanks for your kindness Claire.
The first year of my Patterdales life I fed him Green tripe from Texas Tripe. the 20 lbs lasted a very long time. My Patterdale is about 16lbs and very energetic, high activity so he basically consumes a lot of food compared to a lot of other breeds. The second order the company had a shipping issue so I didn't and couldn't get tripe for a long time! My dog is 4 years old now and I've finally ordered a shipment. I primarily feed the Prey model diet, I do not feed any form of carbs as I believe dogs do not need it/them. I now know that a dogs liver just like a humans liver will produce sugar if and when needed? I am 72 years old and I've learned recently the harm of consuming carbs can do to a body as I was on deaths door before I realized/learned the benefits of eating a human natural diet and I feed a dogs natural diet. I've recently joined a Raw feeding community on Facebook and I've been shocked at the hostilely when I've posted my experience. For example I posted that I give my dog a fast day every 10 days or so and that at times I only feed once a day if he looks little too portly. I was almost banned from the group and was insulted and reprimanded! Ah well, I guess people feel they can attack when other do not think like them, especially over the internet.
I am so sorry to hear you had a bad experience with a Facebook group.
Canine nutrition is a hot button topic and it does tend to bring out considerable hysteria and vitriol.
My approach is first of all you feed the dog in front of you and not what another person has deigned to be appropriate. You know your dog better than anyone and you know what they will and will not thrive on.
Second, everyone has a budget and a comfort level. We want to work with everyone to help make their dog healthier and not condemn people for doing things in a different way provided it is not harmful to the dog.
Third, I believe we can all learn from others and their personal experiences. Dogs quite often naturally fast on a regular basis. I have 2 who do that and one who eats everything in sight. All 3 of them are the same breed and fairly close in age. Like people, they differ.
I hope you just can shake off the comments from the Facebook group and perhaps find one that is more supportive and collaborative rather than it being my way or the high way.
I am hoping to start a group myself in the near future that is supportive first and foremost without judgement. Opinions are great when expressed respectfully and will be welcomed. We are stronger together and our dogs benefit from us coming together to share our knowledge and experiences.
@@VanIsleDoodlesThank you, I will keep a look out for that group when you start it.
Interesting. I have 2 blue Heelers . I fast them every week feeding them only gelatinous chicken broth. I break the fast with unpasteurised milk and a yard egg raw. Thereafter it’s , chicken( from the broth), sardines liver tripe and steak tartare and tripe. They are bushy tailed and luminous .
my 17y old dog who has liver cancer stopped eating a few weeks ago , he lost so much weight, just bones, i heard about green tripe and bough a frozen pack . he eat the whole pack almost in one go !! Yippee, i went back to the store and bough 5 more pack
That's wonderful you found something your fellow likes to eat. I'm so very sorry though about the cancer. When my fellow had cancer we put him on prednisone to stimulate his appetite and also give him some pain relief. It's a balancing act though as you can only do that for a set period of time before the steroids create an issue. We enjoyed an extra 6 months together with that approach and he ate well throughout that time which gave me peace of mind and made him more comfortable.
I wish you the very best with your sweet boy.
@@VanIsleDoodles thanks for your reply, vet told me almost 2 years ago , I should prepare myself..now 2 years later he is still with me ,CBD and other stuff helped a lot ...now after the tripe he seems to be pushing on again
@@VanIsleDoodles shortly after my post, i had to put him down he was suffering 2 much ! He was my life for 17 years
@@frankw9836 I am so very sorry to hear this. No matter when our best friends leave us, it is always too soon.
I believe that every dog who passes shares part of themselves with new dogs that come into our lives.
Run free sweet boy. Frank, remember your fellow's paws are forever part of your heart.
How much tripe are you allowed to feed? Is there a calculation depending on body weight size? Also do you feed tripe daily or every couple of days what is recommended? Thank you
Hi Dajana,
My general rule of thumb is to feed around 5% of the total diet in tripe. That is provided you are not feeding a food with tripe in it already.
For example, some of the Big Country Raw products we serve; country blend, breeder blend, lamb dinner, et cetera, do come with tripe in them. On those days we do not add tripe to the meals.
I like to vary things for my dogs to keep them interested and provide them with a good variety of food so I switch things up quite regularly.
Hope that helps!
its a tried & tested food fed for decades , glad its getting popular again, if you need to handle or portion tripe do it semi frozen no smell then
That's why we recommend - look after portioning it while it is still mostly frozen to avoid that stinky smell lol. I'm so used to it now that I don't even notice it but when you first start using tripe, it is a bit of a surprise as to how stinky it is lol.
Hi. Thanks for the info. You said to add 5 % of the tripe to dogs food daily but the back of the k 9 natural lamb green tripe booster bag says 1/4 cup for a 10 lb dog. If I feed my dog 1 cup a day isn’t 1/4 cup too much? Thank you.
If you dog weighs 10 pounds then 3.2 ounces per day of raw would be the total amount your dog would be eating assuming your dog is an adult. I would only feed a half to one ounce a day of tripe otherwise it will be too much tripe and not enough of the "regular" raw to be sure your dog is getting all the nutrients they need.
Hope that helps.
@@VanIsleDoodles thank you. My dog is a 8 month old mini poodle.
@@navam.2293 in that case you probably want to up the food amount to 4% until month 10 and then drop it to 3% until month 12 and then drop it to 2%. Lucky poodle to be getting great nutrition!
@@VanIsleDoodles thank you. Yes. I love my little poody. 😉
Can you please tell me if blue ridge beef is a good tripe brand? That’s the only one I’ve been able to find near me!
That's not a brand I am familiar with but as long as the tripe is pure and green with nothing added then you should be just fine.
Good luck!
When they harvest the tripe, are they leaving in the stomach contents or emptying it and harvesting only the lining of the stomach?
The contents remain intact.
Is it ok if it is not grass fed beef tripe
Are freeze-dried products also helpful? And it does matter which animal's green tripe?
Freeze-dried is a good option too. We use both beef and lamb tripe. The lamb is a bit less smelly but not all dogs seem to like it as much as the beef tripe.
My dog loves both lambs and beef tripe. But I find that the lambs tripe is better for my dog …….sometimes the beef one makes his poo a bit loose….but depends on the make…..This is just down to my dog! Hope that helps.
Green tripe can it be bought raw in grocery store? What do you think of soild gold green tripe can food?
Hi there,
The tripe in the grocery store has been bleached and has no food value. It is the fresh, green raw tripe that you need to source.
You can generally find it at any pet store that sells raw food.
The canned food has lots pretty much all of its value due to being heated - similar to kibble - when the food is cooked and processed the majority of the value it has disappears.
Just the most awesome stinky thing 😊
It definitely is. You get used to the smell after a bit. I don't find it bothers me at all these days.
Thank you. Do you feed it every?
Hi Becky,
We do give our dogs tripe each day.
If we are feeding Steve's or Stella & Chewy then we give it freeze-dried form as a treat from Woof products. Because the Steve's and Stella's is properly formulated, the tripe can throw balances off so we feed about 4 to 8 of the Woof treats to our dogs daily based on their size.
Canines .. do not need vegetables .
You are right, some people do not feed veg……I believe it doesn’t hurt them. But there is also some good reasons for feeding veg. I give mine raw with a veg mix which he loves…..veg gives added minerals and vits……if you look up dogs natural …there’s loads of info for raw feed dogs. Also the veg gives fibre which is great especially if they tend to get anal gland issues……mine never does …..
Hi ! If I feed my dog a cooked diet , can I feed cooked green tripe ?
Canned tripe or freeze-dried or dehydrated are all better than no tripe at all.
@@VanIsleDoodles Perfecto ! But if I buy the fresh tripe and I boil it , is it ok ?
@@msh7453 you would lose most of the value that way. And your house would smell horrible. I am not sure if you can source green tripe. The white, bleached tripe you see in the store has zero nutritional value. You would be better off to use freeze-dried or dehydrated than cooking it.
can i feed my dog tripe if they have allergies. I have a frenchie please help!
Hi there,
Without knowing specifically what your dog is allergic to, I wouldn't be able to say.
Some dogs, for instance, can't eat beef that has been grain fed but are fine with beef that is only raised eating hay or grass.
The best thing is to do a full allergy food test through Dr. Jean Dodds nutriscan which you can find here hemopet.org/nutriscan/
She will be able to help you determine what your Frenchie may or may not be able to eat.
Good luck!
My dog loves tripe
I know very few dogs who don't enjoy the stinky stuff!
Any idea why my dogs hate tripe so much
I expect, like people, some dogs simply don't enjoy the taste of it. Usually it is their favourite thing in the world.
You could try lamb tripe instead if you can find it.
Or, if having it in frozen format isn't appealing, perhaps try it in freeze-dried form instead. That may do the trick.
