_______________ Zildjian K Custom Special Dry Zil-Bel??? Cymbals Demo -- Recently I attended the PASIC 2018 conference and got the opportunity to steal some time with none other than the MAN himself in the cymbal world, Paul Francis. This is the first in a small series I'm doing on some Zildjian cymbal prototypes that they have put out. Many of these will make it to market...but none have yet. So be sure and leave a comment with your thoughts on what the K Custom Special Dry Zil-Bel sounds like to you. This is obviously an FX cymbal and not suited for every playing situation. But I really do love the tone they give off in person and could see several applications for them.

Every metalcore drummer searched Matt Greiner's bells at least once, and from what i can hear from this demo these K bells sound better than the Zil-Bels or any other standard bell, so definetely add them to the catalogue.
michele pantano Yea, they sound great when he plays them with their music.
These sound more like an old timey ship bell. It definitely solves the "rings for 2 hours" issue with the normal zil bell.
D Adam lol, they do have that ship bell sound don’t they
YES WE NEED THOSE!!The small one is perfect although the bigger one is close, needs a little bit of work.
Those sound great! Like chimes. I've never really liked the z bells much but these sound so smooth. Really nice
David Fox Yea, they made me think of crotales. Very different tone but I dug it
These are so organic! Perfect for a movie dark ages music. Also, the vibrato from them moving up and down after you hit them is amazing, something we're not really used to, giving them a meditation-in-the-wind-vibe.
Either you're huge or that dude is really small
combo
They sound awesome. Would definitely buy 'em. Great job on the video.
Very nice! I love them both!
yes please!
I love how passionate Paul is on this :) Thank you Stephen for bringing this to us!
James OKeefe Lol, he’s a trip to watch talk about cymbals. Love to see people that are passionate about what they do.
I absolutely love the small one ❤️
Sounds awesome!
Now we need a K Custom Special Dry Mega Bell Ride to accompany this.
Yes, make more. Beautiful tone, dosent kill the ear, i like em
LOVE THESE BELLS!
Absolutely. Bring these to market. I've wanted Greiner's bell sound for years.
I took one of each size home (as well as a different prototype, but I don't want to give away any spoilers...). They have way more character than the regular Zil-Bels. I love Zildjian prototypes so much. Paul is a great guy and it's cool to see him explaining his cymbal creations. Thanks for the vid...
Penny Larson Lol, wish I would have seen you there! They had some killer prototypes this year.
@@StephenTaylorDrums It's tough to find anyone there sometimes ... so many people! It would have been great to meet ya in the flesh. The prototypes this year were definitely awesome. Of course, after I bought a ride I realized that I had to get it home ... lol ... next stop, Humes and Berg booth!
YES always wanted a dry not that harsh sounding bell!
About time zildjian had an offering like radia chimes ! Hope to see them out soon !
I reckon they also took a note from Gavin Harrison... He has two bells just like those, although they sound 'crashier', if that makes any sense.
When you put your hand Paul’s shoulder, it really made you look suuuuper tall
Amazing! 👌
Nice Bell for Christmas :))))
I love the sound of the smaller one, I would definitely buy one for my kit.
I need these in my life!!!!
I dig the larger bell. Will have to check one out if I ever come across them
Life-long Zildjian player here, and the Renaissances/Constantinople line is my all-time favorite. You should absolutely put these new Zil-bels in your catalog, please. The more unique sounds we have available in our respective arsenals the better.
Judas Maccabeus thanks for chiming in with your thoughts. They really do listen to you guys
Yesssss I love these and love Matt greiner!!!
We want them for sure
Love the bell and basically anything in the K range!!!!!! Also maybe release more options for bigger hi hats like 16 or even 17. That Steve Jordan pocket vibe!
Jacob Friedman I believe they have some 17’s coming
YESSSSS YES YES. I've been waiting to get my hands on one of his bells for a long time. They should make it a signature piece considering he's literally been the only drummer with these custom made for him for what, ten years now??? But hell yes I'm gonna buy one asap
I'd love to have one of the larger ones. Great tone.
Yes!!!! if these are announced at namm I am going to buy both of them IMMEDIATELY! Seriously Matt is the drummer that got me into playing, and I have wanted that sound since I heard it. I work at a music shop. I, and many drummers from my age group that I meet were also influenced by Matt and I can recall at least a dozen conversations about how zildjian has been sleeping on Matt’s prototypes for a long time. YOU GOTTA RELEASE THEM!!!
And zildjian should put matt greiners signature on it! He made that bell sound a sought after thing amongst metalcore drummers. It will sell better that way because people already associate that sound with his playing.
I'm waiting for Matt to ship out the 7.5" bell he has a limited run for right now! I can't wait until I get it, and can not wait until the bigger one is available!
Very cool
You're right, Stephen. these Zil-bels sound much warmer. The original ones were ear-shatteringly bright. I'd buy them, if they become available.
Ok I agree love these and didn't think I would
Spooks me neither. But they’ve got a unique tone to them. Almost crotale like in some ways
Gotta have more bell man. You can never have too much. Adds a certain dynamic. You can’t go wrong with anything from Zildjian
I have several bell type cymbals in my set up. I play a smaller company called Saluda Cymbals based out of North Carolina. I designed two of the cymbals I use. One is smaller cup chime, 6", that I had made with Danny Carey's sound in mind. The other is a large, HEAVY, bell, "10.
I WANT THESE MORE THAN LIFE ITSELF
Paul Francis is so awesome, he could probably talk for hours about cymbal felts if he needed to!
Hey stephen thanks for posting this. I'm a paiste guy but I'm voting yes for these special dry zilbels. I like the small one a lot and hope to see it available some day.
Yessss please I've been wanting that exact sound from a effects bell of some sort the closest thing I have to it is a stagg bell but I would love to have these on the set
interesting. I like the sound of the smaller one.
Much want!
I am really a Sabian guy, but I think I found the perfect sounding bells. Zilbels were too much volume and sustain. Ice Bells are decent, but choke at times. Sabian Alu Bells are just awful in my opinion. I always wanted a bell that sounded like a bell from a ride without having to reach for the bell on the ride cymbal. Speed and reach factor. Definitely put them out. Will buy both models.
I have a 6” ZilBel and a 7” Sabian Alu Bell and those sound like bells.
This is so dry it sounds too “clangy” in my opinion.
Won’t be adding these I’m afraid.
I too am not a big fan of the Zil Bel, but I'm liking these two. They aren't as "ringy" and I like that. These would fit more with what I play and like.
Looks like these were the precursors to the new FX Blast Bells
I WANT IT!!!
lol it’s me and my instructor tommy @0:14 i’m wearing the blue medal and black trench coat. that’s so funny to me for some reason
yeah.. that's a Sabian Radia Cup Chime..
Love these, especially the small one! I've got a volcano cup zil-bel (which is awesome) but my bandmates hate how long it rings out :/
I picked one up recently it fucking rocks! It works well with my A mega bell ride
I like them already! Give me!!!🇸🇪
This bells are being made closer to the way I like them with that wide flange but I prefer the bell to be a little deeper in the middle. Cool to see though!
Ive always thought I wanted a zbell especially when my ride is used more as a crash and the bell on it kinda sucks so I buy a zbell and it sounds like a trolly bell. I like the small bell the larger still has that trolly sound. Can you design a bell that more like an 80's rock ride bell?
OMG seriously a need both. how can i do o have this bells?
I’ve always preferred a more controlled sound from effects bells. These are definitely nice 👍
I have both the 6 and 9.5 inch zil bels and would totally get both of these if they were added, i really want these
I need these
They were released as the new FX Blast Bells
The bell’s sound great. Put them in the catalog please
I do like the larger bell sound but would like to hear it upside down to be sure it sounds the same on the bend of the bell where it reaches the flat rim.
Pleaaaaaase make these!
I'm a firm believer I that you can never have enough options so please make these.
I’m all about these!
Jonathan Fazio Yea, they’re def different from the originals in a very good way
Stephen Taylor let Paul know to keep those new cymbals coming!! I saw his video on the special dry projection and I can’t wait for those!!
I play Meinl, but I will buy these, one of each size, if they make production; no question. Do it, Zildjian! #Zildjian
I always wanted Zildjian to make cup chimes like Paiste makes with the super crystal like tone and 4.5" sizes and up. I like "dark" cymbals, but what about crisp, bright effects and regular drumset cymbals? I know the "A" line exists.
Bellerific. can I mount to my head?
Did these ever actually make it into production?
so are theses for sale now?
I'll keep my Sabian Radia Cup bells and Meinl Byzance cymbals. Big fan of yours though, Stephen! Cheers
Please come thru with these bells
"we forgot about them"... Bruh one of the most influential metal drummers makes a cymbal and takes you this long to mass produce? LET'S GOOO TAKE MY MONIIEEESSS
Love them, K customs all day! I wish they made bubinga cymbals............. 🎉🥁🎉🥁🎉🥁
Keep them
😍😍😍
What did Zildjian do to Paul?
I fucking Love ZILDJIAN!!!!!! I’m trying to get an internship for my senior project because I only live 30 mins away from the factory.
Jacob Friedman would be a killer internship
How did you find your first paid gigs when you where young
Yes please! Less sustain than the originals is a huge plus!
Tommy Reyna yep, and not as piercing. That’s what I dig
where was this in my metalcore years?
These would be perfect for Gamelan
What ever happened to them? Total want/need them!
They were the precursor to the new FX Blast Bells, they're not under the K line anymore
Much better than the bright ones.. I 'settled' for a pair of Chinese Opera cymbals even though the postage was crazy.. Near the end Buddy Rich had a splash with a large bell and hardly any flang.. it looked like these but it sounded like the old 6" splash.. Whatever.. I so enjoy your videos Stephan.. I feel like I am 'hanging out' with you as we talk drums.. very personable you are ;)
Bill Bacon ooohhh, Chinese opera cymbals. Some nice sounds there. And thanks Bill!
@@StephenTaylorDrums My pleasure totally.. After posting I wondered if I was sabotaging the video but that was not my intention.. By the way the opera cymbals are 6" in diameter and heavy enough to be more 'bell-like' than cymbals as we know them.. I wish that you were around when I was a young drummer.. your giving is truly a gift to young drummers as well as aging players like myself.. peace
Not a zil bel, but a cup chime!
ANY UPDATE ON WHEN AVAILABLE?
I honestly don’t know. Sometimes these prototypes hit the shelves quickly, sometimes they take a long time.
Currently, Matt is doing a limited run of the 7.5" bell right now. He's only doing 150 last I heard he has 87 of them sold. Message him on Instagram. I'm on the list for one of them. Now to just wait for the 9.5" to be available

Can't tell if Stephen is a giant, or Paul is really short.
mitchell benham
I met Paul years ago once he was very short I’m guessing 5’7”.
im not hating on anybody who uses bells, spashes and (small) china's. but personally i dont have enough money to spend it on special effects and stuff. I just use hats, rides and crashes. (admittedly one of my crashes is the 20" efx crash, but i bought that one because dave grohl and taylor hawkins are two of my favorite drummers out there.)
Ruben Spoolder Man, I totally get this. I’ve always said I wasn’t a gear guy, and I still don’t consider myself one, but I think the reason that happened was because I didn’t have the money to buy much. So I used what I had and made it work. Played the same hats and ride for about 18 years. Same Drums for about 18 years as well. It’s not the tools that count. It’s how we use them.
Stephen Taylor well said ✌🏻 i guess things do become a little easier when you land a partnership deal ;)
@@StephenTaylorDrums Well said ST.. needs to be said often ;)
2:52
3:48 Land a-hoy!!
Craigr Meister Ha!!!
The smaller one is hot. This will sound cool if you are playing African music or Latin music.
So pretty much paiste 2002 cup chimes with no finish
Kind of church bell-esque to my ears.
traditional zil bel's have no character i feel, these are awesome. too bad they'll be like 200 usd :/
So everyone is going to ignore the weird looking cymbal at the bottom right ?😂
Matthew Lam ha! That’s one of their gongs I believe. There is a big orchestral and marching band part of pasic.
Stephen Taylor ohhhhh I see , thanks man
