- Since 1819, the British colonial government brought in labourers and immigrants from China and India to Singapore. The Chinese were mainly from the south eastern provinces of China. They conjugated near the Singapore River now known as Chinatown. The male labourers that worked at the ports were known as Coolies 苦力, the female labourers that wore a red head dress were from Guangdong province and they were called Samsui women 三水婆/红头巾 that mainly worked at construction sites. There were also the female domestic helpers called the Ma Chie 妈姐 who usually wore white top and dark bottom. Some Samsui women and Ma Chie sailed back to China for retirement but most settled down in Singapore because they could not afford the travel. Most of them did not get married too. All these Coolies, Samsui women and Ma Chie contributed to the building of Singapore but they have dissappeared from the Singapore scene by the 1980s. Song composer Leong Kwok Khuen 梁国权aka梁兄 compiled the archive photos and created a video montage using his own composed song "阿爸阿妈“ as a tribute to these forgotten labourers of Singapore. Being a foreigner, I'm thankful to those Pioneers who literally devoted their lifespans for laying down the basic infrastructure of this great nation. Can't finish this video with out getting the eyes wet 😓

Sad really. I saw a statue of a Samsui woman in Chinatown on a visit recently. Dedicated to their laborious contribution in d past.
