I've worked in Singapore for 7 years and yes, I saw some elders living on the street. It is so heartbreaking 😢 seeing old people on the streets because it is the time of their lives that they should be taken care of and enjoying the rest of the years that they will be alive
This is Singapore, not just your filtered and edited shots of the mbs, gardens by the bay, orchard road or changi jewel on Instagram accounts liked by outsiders. Sad truth.
Our Government does not really care . They are interested in taking care of the rich and wealth overseas. Born in Singapore and had no space to live in a proper home.
This is quite an ugly sight despite their positive outlook on life. Also, poor people make poor desisions, education once again, needs to be refocused to prevent social problems.
I can't help but wonder, what decisions in life had led them to this stage -- of how much they have been through and how they are still surviving through it all. What mental strength and grit they must have developed. How ironic that the old man is sleeping in the vicinity of Marina Bay, surrounded and juxtaposed with wealth all around. Why do I feel depressed now....
Seeing how the meritocrotic nature of Singapore runs, those who can't compete will fall down the food chain. When PAP viewed the immigration of skilled workers that almost outnumbered the people, the local populace will have hard time to compete. This is pretty similar to how the Malays felt when the British bring in bulks of foreign workers into the region until it outnumbered the locals there, that lead to the existence of Malay rights in Malaysia. Singapore needs to restrict the number of outsiders into the country to let their own people flourish. It's not about being racist, it's about taking care of your own people. What's the point of making money if the lack of humanity consume your souls.
You are right. it is so depressing to see that there are people who are left behind while the country progresses. Our social welfare isn't as substantial as other countries. It is even sadder knowing most (not all) Singaporeans are self centered and wouldn't think about helping these group of people. The government can't help them, the people think its the government job and won't help them.. how to put an end to this situation in Singapore

Don't know if i spelt his name right but please go and tell him that he can be very proud of himself and he has a job and most of all he does not steal and he tries to keep himself as neat as possible. My prayer for him is that someone watching this can help him to get a place to live closer to work.
Do the elderly people not get a state pension in Sg to give them a reasonable living? He can still work with his pension to boost his income. Wish him well.
you should come to beach road and see. i stayed there since 1998 as a kid. my mum's still staying there. occasionally i would go back. seeing mostly familiar faces. there you find plenty of elders sleeping at void deck, they're of course my neighbours; knowing the fact that they sleep at the void deck at night because they don't want to die unknown in their flat. my next door neighbour passed away at home took us a few days to realise he was dead. most of them have kids, adult kids. hopeless kids. rely hopeless kids.
That happens a lot in Japan too. Old people live alone because they don't want to bother their kids, or the kids don't want parents living with them. Every year many old people die alone, it's called 孤独死 or "solitary death." Often their body isn't found for a few months and became completely rotten. It's really awful.
Either sleep in public places near the work place and get to work in time or sleep in your own HDB unit with the possibility of losing your job by going in late. Not actually a homeless situation for most of these "homeless men" . Life is not always what it seem from outside in little red dot, go figure!
I'm a canadian of chinese decent. Canada is perceived as a compassionate society with a social safety net for the less fortunate. Billions has been spent on poverty reduction and homelessness. Yet Toronto city government is the largest slum lord in North America. They own the buildings housing low income families. Buildings are now 40 to 50 years old and beyond repair. Hence, families live in slum buildings. The cost to repair is astronomical and not practical. Better to sell the land and build new. Good intentions of the past has led to a crisis of affordable housing. The destitute are often mentally ill, addiction issues, criminal past, trafficked, run aways with domestic issues, abused women, etc...We even have shelters that can house 100s of people, but you must leave in the morning. There are even all day warming shelters for those extremely cold days. We have one of the most successful charitable food drives. None of these initiatives have made a significant impact on homelessness and poverty. You can spend billions or nothing and still have poverty and homeless. There are no easy answers. But affordable housing is the cornerstone of poverty reduction.
The government doesn't care about the poor? Get your facts right. My mother is the only one supporting this family and she is earning less than $1200 per month. Do you think that is enough to feed a family of 5? If it wasn't for the government subsidies and supports, do you think me and my siblings can live peacefully? I'm grateful for what the government has done to help me and my family. But what about you guys? The only thing you do is criticising the government. Take this video as an example, you said the government should intervene in this issue. Did you really believe they didn't? But how much intervention is too much, and how much is too less?
Rain kzwk Think of a single person over 60 years who have to buy a flat with full cash payment. Or need two person to get a rent flat both income cannot exceed over $1500. No Cash to purchase a flat but Income more than $1500 not qualified for rent flat. Stay where? IN HOTELS?

No country is clean and have no problems. Singapore is no different. It's just that the government seems to be the icon of the Southeast Asian region that people didn't start to think that there are many poverty cases happened in Singapore itself!

I still don’t get it. Most of them are employed have have hdb flat on their name. But they prefer to sleep outdoor homelessly due to commute distance? I guess due to low crime it is safe to sleep in public places.
I think it has to do with the massive ammount of monthly payment they have to pay wether it'd be rent or public transport. Better sleep outside and walk to your work place and save those moneys for baic commodities.
you don't pay the CPF , you don't pay the town council/PUB bill , this is what you get , homeless . Pay And Pay.... or homeless , this is the truth of staying in Singapore
PAP should be proud of these homeless people because PAP ministers and MPs create this problem for them . PAP did this because they know the these poor and homeless voters won't create any threats to them in parliament. that's is why PAP hold on to your CPF and enriche themselves.
Whatever the excuse or reasons may be, you can’t call yourself anything but “developing” when there are people still sleeping in your streets and alleys. It maybe a very wealthy city state but it is not as well governed as it seems.
You can still manage by when you’re homeless in Singapore. Free showers, water and there are casual jobs you can take..It’s only age that affects our ability, saving up money before it gets worse is the only way to live

Our ancestors had tougher lives den them, many don’t have chance to study and learn. Yet they work hard to build this mosquito swamp land into something. Life here becomes better for their descendants yet so many complaints. Remember, our land got nothing but swamp. What can we do? Is like one year old kids fighting against 10 year old kids. Always prepare well folks out there, or maybe, maybe we will become like them. Homeless again...
I'm an Indonesian" I once traveled to Singapore, they say, if you want to become a resident there, you will be given 9.5 billion/900,000 $' but the fact is, why do the citizens experience this?
Homeless people are everywhere, is not just happening in Singapore. Is happening in Europe, in England and Wales we too have a lot of homeless people sleeping in the street. Some are pretenders who make a living out of the generosity of the public, wheather they are pretenders or truly homeless. Either through a fault of they own or due to various economic or health reasons, is a shame to the British government or any governments in the world to allow it to happen to it citizens. Social care and health so be all governments top priority, especially in countries where they is cold weather. We in England and Wales have a lot of empty building, surely the British government can afford to create special needs for their citizens who have fallen into hard time. By creating temporary accommodation so the homeless do not have to sleep on the streets, with a given address so the homeless can apply for seekers allowance and apply for jobs. Once successful candidate's who got a job then they can move on to a different accommodation and from they onwards to private accommodation or to council accommodation etc. All citizens should be given a chance
For a government who constantly shits on Malaysia because they are lower in economy and always seems to take in high skilled workers into their country by abandoning the local populace, you'd see how hypocritical the PAP is. The Malays of the peninsular experienced this when the British took in foreign labours that outnumbered the locals, now Singapoerans (especially those who always claled the Malay rights as racist) will feel the same thing Malays back then had when their own government brought in number of workers that rivalled the entire residents numbers.
Because of greed .. Why The Queen of England don’t help all the poor on her country which of 6.600 millions acres of the land of the world is she owned it., and she’s the gazillion richest person in the whole wide world and still a lot of poor people living in the street of this country! oh my G
He's not homeless. Didn't anyone actually watch the video. He rents a place with his sister but doesn't want to stay there as it's too far from his work place.
This is sad and I did not realize that this side of Singapore existed. I once had a friend that lived in Indonesia and she said that life there is hard, but she said the biggest problem is actually people are lazy and do not want to work or study hard. They would rather steal, cheat, and do other dishonest things instead of working and studying or they just give up completely. She said there was there were many opportunities around but many young people just do not want to even try.
La Vie En Rose They were one country before. if you look at the map they are there. It's a city of Singapore. it's still is, I wouldn't call it a country itself.

I don't wanna be THAT guy but one would wonder where their cpf money is? At that age they should have a steady supply of cpf money( maybe not much but it should suffice ) given every month right?
It sad saw homeless people's along the street at Singapore. The government doesn't care their own people? Build shelter give them a proper place to stay. What a shame for the current government.

Don't know if i spelt his name right but please go and tell him that he can be very proud of himself and he has a job and most of all he does not steal and he tries to keep himself as neat as possible. It's not his fault that the rent is so high. He can be proud of himself and hold his head up high. He has nothing to be ashamed about. My name is Sharon and I am from South Africa. My prayer for him is that someone watching this can help him to get a place to live closer to work.
Do the elderly people not get a state pension in Sg to give them a reasonable living?
He can still work with his pension to boost his income. Wish him well.
you should come to beach road and see.
i stayed there since 1998 as a kid.
my mum's still staying there.
occasionally i would go back.
seeing mostly familiar faces.
there you find plenty of elders sleeping at void deck,
they're of course my neighbours;
knowing the fact that they sleep at the void deck at night because they don't want to die unknown in their flat.
my next door neighbour passed away at home took us a few days to realise he was dead.
most of them have kids, adult kids.
hopeless kids.
rely hopeless kids.
Lam Par They are homeless, do they live in a home? No, they don't.
Lam Par Why Have Thou Forsaken Me...Says The Dong!
why I never see this kind of video from Channell News Asia?
Today also government one right?
Los Angels They hide them.
Rain kzwk go out and work and stop looking at your phone, don't complain, nobody own u a big fat living ! smile and go work
Rain kzwk Think of a single person over 60 years who have to buy a flat with full cash payment. Or need two person to get a rent flat both income cannot exceed over $1500. No Cash to purchase a flat but Income more than $1500 not qualified for rent flat. Stay where? IN HOTELS?
Vincent Raju what have you done when you were at the age of 20 ? dreaming ? you don't think about buying a flat when you have 1500 dollars income a month at the age of 60, please, we only live once weak up when u were 20 ! nut !
khoo chee peng Bro? U got it all wrong lah.
Vincent Raju was implying back to 'Rain kzwk' statement. Not yours.
Read properly nxt time ya.
Hah..
Rain kzwk dont lie. dont act like u are grateful..u should suffer more. the lesser people the better
Life in Singapore is stressful
True
The best nation in SEA, but the poor are kicked out of sight, capitalism finest.
Praying for these people to be spiritually, financially, emotionally and physically blessed.
Being homeless, it's a situation we have somebody we cannot except in our life ,but it is the only way to let the person go
I never thought that Singapore has problems like these.Knew it was way too perfect to be true.
No country is clean and have no problems. Singapore is no different. It's just that the government seems to be the icon of the Southeast Asian region that people didn't start to think that there are many poverty cases happened in Singapore itself!
True,it's damn well hidden.
All countries are not perfect so don't expect Singapore to be one yes u see very less ppl homeless but there are still quite a number of homeless ppl in Singapore
I'm yūjin I know right.
It has busted my idealistic view of Singapore.
Im shocked he could be beaten up and i thought the MRT serviced everywhere.
I always feel safe when i visit Singapore it is one of my favourite places
@@zebimicio5204 What do you mean by "that many"? There are homless people in EVERY country. Fyi Singapore has a 90.7% homeownership which is the second highest in the world.
reading comment below on how hard is it for Singaporean to own a house I think Singapore need to build highest of highest apartment or a boat as a house.
In other countries when you are old government give insurance Singapore only a bit or don’t even have
I feel really bad for this Uncle...😢
Nur Azhar 😄🙌
you should invite him to stay with you.
You have a lot of empathy.
this is a lesson for any government. they must build public bathhouse, public toilet, and the city forest/jungle.
and also build a safe pedestrian
I like the idea of public bathhouse.. is it mix gender tho? Pardon for being lewd🤭
Exactly ! It's better not to own a flat if most of percentage of people prefer to sleep outside.
but he showed the pics of some of his travel overseas!! he ain't that poor you know.
enkii82 he was younger on those pictures.
Maybe Singapore needs more street crime to deter them sleeping on streets LOL
enkii82 when yoi lived in a country that has amongst of the highest currency rates, travwlling here and there is nothing.
This is what a materialistic society has to offer. Pursuit for happiness, that's what matter
Where are their families?
Despite his predicament he still very considerate
Inilah sisi gelap yang rakyat dan kerajaan Singapura sembunyikan. Singapura juga disebut juga negara paling ramai stress dan bunuh diri.
you don't pay the CPF , you don't pay the town council/PUB bill , this is what you get , homeless . Pay And Pay.... or homeless , this is the truth of staying in Singapore
I would sleep in the storage room, where I worked. Employer should give you a quiet space.
PAP should be proud of these homeless people because PAP ministers and MPs create this problem for them . PAP did this because they know the these poor and homeless voters won't create any threats to them in parliament. that's is why PAP hold on to your CPF and enriche themselves.
Its the result of high house prices ... the rents just keep going up ... so sad it can happen in a rich country like Singapore ...
He said he rents a place with his sister but doesn't want to stay there as it's too far fm his work place. Did u even watch the video.
Heartbroken to see people sleeping in the street. Why the government is not helping them?
For those who still egoistic n arrogant......dont worry.....when u get old u will taste it a bit.....then u will know how they feel
Singapore one of the richest country in the world.Society not rich, most of singaporeans stay homeless because of goverments
Singaporeans are very nice people, I once got lost on the road when I asked local people they gave me money to take the bus where I asked where I was staying.
why not sleep in hostel ? takecost 600 singapore probably
but you guy still support government.what to do men l told hundreds time this is no more Singaporean land no more kampong sprites style. only rich n famous people around the world global economy
Kamwai Chan right said
For a government who constantly shits on Malaysia because they are lower in economy and always seems to take in high skilled workers into their country by abandoning the local populace, you'd see how hypocritical the PAP is.
The Malays of the peninsular experienced this when the British took in foreign labours that outnumbered the locals, now Singapoerans (especially those who always claled the Malay rights as racist) will feel the same thing Malays back then had when their own government brought in number of workers that rivalled the entire residents numbers.
Aiman Imran a good story on humanity's best. Bring it back. All races have their own heroes that do well to cope with various problems.
Because of greed ..
Why The Queen of England don’t help all the poor on her country which of 6.600 millions acres of the land of the world is she owned it., and she’s the gazillion richest person in the whole wide world and still a lot of poor people living in the street of this country! oh my G
@@zebimicio5204 You mean to say you believe that Malay rights isn't racist...?
My old house was demolished by my cousin. I will end up sleeping in the streets. Not to worry. This life is short.
Singapore is governed like that of corporation rather than a nation states.
It won't look good if there is slum in Singapore so the government rather let the homeless to sleep at public areas than building a ugly property
The building behind it has a big pool on it right?
Malaysia welcomes you guys with open arms
SufyGamer 195 that quite offensive but you roast him well XD
+La Vie En Rose thats true
I'll feel safer living in Singapore homeless than living in Malaysia homeless. 🤣
La Vie En Rose They were one country before. if you look at the map they are there. It's a city of Singapore. it's still is, I wouldn't call it a country itself.
In Malaysia we got zakat.. and bunch of NGO.. not to mention RM1.00 gov hospital..
REALLY SAD, HENCE THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE LEFT SINGAPORE!
Everytime i see a Homeless video in SG, i see alot of them smoking. Cigs are really expensive in Singapore, well unless someone gives them for free.
1:43 Looking at Marina Bay and this guy, makes me think that maybe Singapore wants to keep the poverty side hidden. I was a student there for 2 years and I have seen a few homeless people in orchard road and a bit in Tuas as well.
I don't wanna be THAT guy but one would wonder where their cpf money is? At that age they should have a steady supply of cpf money( maybe not much but it should suffice ) given every month right?
Great video!
Is sometimes very hard to get along, if u cannot get along, u rather stay outside want peace.
Where were those homeless stayed during COVID-19 CB?
This is happen maybe bcoz too many foreign worker .
They are better than the homeless Canada where they are freeze to death in the winter.
Lar M . The video is about Singapore and in Singapore
Some “rich” commented may have gotten their parents’ inheritance before chasing them out from the flat
I think u have seen that uncle with the suit case before , maybe 4 years ago at that exact place
Since the 38 Qxley rd don't demolish, should send all homeless to there
Redfield Cornell . supper
It sad saw homeless people's along the street at Singapore. The government doesn't care their own people? Build shelter give them a proper place to stay. What a shame for the current government.
Does it get cold in Singapore?
"There is no homeless people here in Singapore!!"
-my father
I was only 5 when he said that
Just found a set of jewelry in Taipei 101 mall and it's worth NT$ 1,320,000 - with this amount, you can already feed a lot of people or give shelters to the homeless like this guy..
The last words are called wisdom
Singapore needs a human touch.
Singapore is for rich people to stay , If one is poor,no good job due to no opportunity, either live very bitterly like a begger or consider live in other lower standard country :( In Singapore if you are old near middle age, not the rich, not an elite professional, don't hold a good job ,you are condemn and flushed out. Cannot even hide in toilet bowl, what a bitter ground life to lead.
Did he choose not to live in old folks home?
Lost for words... Not but truly a pity to see them like that
you have homeless people in every country no matter how rich they are
In any case without knowing why at his age he doesn't have any savings or hdb flat from before, it's hard to say anything.
Pretty hard for our world where we live right now. Which it all considers with money. God, he needs much more room space for his life.
When everyone who is talking shit about other country but did not realising about their own.Singapore is one of the country that had the last number of homeless people government gave people highly subsidiaed housing and people who is homeless can just ask help from government
But u must see other or most countries and u see the vast diff Sg has than other countries that had homrless people
Why is HDB so wicked - forced 2 old strangers to rent "pigeon coop"??? Some old folks prefer to b alone but HDB is causing them to b depressed. Sooooo sad.... Singapore??? Sigh...
Every country still has its problem regardless how high or low it’s economic.
there are homeless people in all countries. as far as I know help is available to all singaporeans.
Homeless people they have very nice face. Instead of thier problem
i thought singapore is perfect until watch this...
