As a full-time, paid firefighter AND in the trades, THANK YOU for your advice before you began the job. Not only does it prevent an unnecessary call, it enables us to stay available for those who truly may have an emergency. Keep it up Roger!
Very cool roger. I’ve been a plumber for 21 years and I’ve never seen a anyone perform a smoke test. Thanks for taking away the mystery. Next you should perform a peppermint test. I’ve always been curious about that one too.
I've never done it, but imagine how much work you could potentially create by "accidentally" filling the city and neighbors' houses with smoke. It would only be noticeable if they had issues. Otherwise, it would just shoot out the vents. "Opps, my test ball failed..? But clearly you have a sewer gas issue." 😉 My equipment is a manhole unit and puts out a lot more on demand.
Hi Roger, have you thought about making a folding sign that tells the neighbors that "smoke test in progress" and set a couple out in the yard ? That would help make your job easier and you won't be answering a ton of questions!!
Question sir: New house built in 2020 (no warranty as it was a quick flip by a builder who didnt offer one). Septic tank. They left a vent pipe and bar rough in open behind the dry wall in basement after a county pre-drywall water pressure test during construction which left me with bad sewer smell in basement whenever our water filter ejected water into the septic outlet pipe. We did two smoke tests to find that disconnected pipe and had it fixed along with a bad seal on a toilet. Two different plumbing companies did the two smoke tests. Problem solved -- However we are left with a lingering sewer gas smell on colder, windy days in one main level bathroom only. There was no smoke seen coming from this toilet during the two previous smoke tests for the vent pipe in basement issue (they cost $600 each and having done it twice with two different plumbers I am leery of doing another one). This toilet is in the main level bath/powder room. It is used often, clean and is stinking to high heaven this week with the arrival of windy weather. So my question is could it be that this toilet and shower and sink are on a vent pipe that daylights on the south side of the house and therefore catches the wind just right on the roof to push the gas back down the pipe in certain weather conditions? It doesnt always smell jus ton these types of weather days. Walking around the septic tank outside I detect no smell from t he tanks or outside. The issue is the local plumbers don't go up on roofs and don't carry ladders and the local roofers don't know plumbing. So I'm in a self help kind of trick. I'm thinking maybe a PVC attachment on the top of the vent pipe to prevent wind pushing gas back down. Does my theory make sense to you?
I've just been handed the MOA water bills. The utility guy said the leak could be in the feed line to the house. Background: just had all the plumbing replaced in kitchen and adjacent bathroom. But now the bill tripled since everything was installed. Out of money for repairs. What do I do?
Call a qualified plumber, explain the issue, and make sure they have an electronic leak detector. Fast and efficient. Can even find leaks in slabs. Hope that is not your issue, though.
Is this a service most plumbers offer? If so any idea what the average cost is? I probably need this done at my house cuz we can smell our septic throughout the house after we shower
Hello ,Roger sir , myself Jeremiah and l like your videos and our content and l have interest in becoming a plumber I am from Indian , lam currently pursuing my one year trade course in plumbing and I have a dream to work in u.s as a plumber ,so is that possible to get a job in u.s as a plumber as an Indian ? If yes ? I have some questions in front of you What are the qualifications required to work in u.s as a plumber? What is the procedure to apply and how ? What are the documents required to apply for u.s visa as a plumber? Please reply me sir 🙏
Jerry, these are a lot of questions and GOOD ones! If you’re able to answer this one question it could solve a lot of your questions. Where are you planning on moving to? Different areas in the US have different rules. Look at where you’re looking to live at and see what that city/county requires to be a licensed plumber coming from over seas. Hope this helps!
If l am talking about your city which you live in your rules or your company. My question is that What are the qualifications required to work in u.s as a plumber. Step by step ?

if them fricking plumbers wouldn't put pipes where the wires have to go! 🤣🤣🤣 I've drilled into a pipe before, left a big note and marked it on pipe, studs and joist. the plumbers weren't really mad, since I made it clear who did it and let them know before they failed a test, possibly with drywall up. also did pizza for lunch. the best was putting a framing nail through a 1/2" copper water line and not testing it before the subfloor went down, luckily I was screwing down the subfloor and the nail was from blocking around the toilet. (remodel job and only me working, so I knew who to blame...)
Oh no. Superior smoke is an awful product. We stopped using it 15 years ago when our clients complained of headaches and toxic chemical smell 4~6 weeks later after smoke test. The candle is awful. There are way better products that don’t leave your clients with irritation of the lungs and nose and throat. I’m not here to crap on your product promotion or sell anyone on another brand but trust there are better.

Not a plumber, just a guy who loves to learn. Great content, Roger! Thank you for all your informative videos!
I appreciate it!
Now we need to see you rip out that wall to fix the leak.
I’m sure one of his guys will be doing it. Would love to see the video tho Roger!
Coming soon! 👀
@@RogerWakefield whoohoo! I love stuff like this.
Roger’s most impressive skill is the power to summon objects such as batteries and tapes from off screen directly into his hand
It’s something I’ve been practicing since I was a young boy 💪🏻🛠️
Him and Luke Skywalker are the only two people I know of that can do it.

🤘🏽thank you brother
I've never heard of a test like this, pretty cool.

Do all houses have the exterior sewer access pipe like that?
Ryobi sells a hand pump for about $25 that works great with test balls. Great video!
Most the plumbers I worked with did smoke test everyday. In our vehicle. Right before we started working lmao.
Did they find any leaks in the doors or windows? 👀👀
@@RogerWakefield mostly cracks in their work performance. Lol. Never understood how they managed it.
Are the leaks high on the ceiling? 😂

Not a bad idea! 🪧
Might as well include some company advertising, attach a little box to hold business cards if people want to take one
I loved their booth at WWETT show this year!
Can confirm: your toilet IS cooler than mine 😂. Also more great music! 🎉

Hard to say if most companies do it. Where are you located? I would call around and see if any of the companies near you offer that service
@Roger Wakefield I'm in south central PA
Do you recommend anyone in North NJ?
Only company I know out there is Express Plumbing Heating & Cooling...Owner is Dave Hill, great guy and great company

Love your educational videos tho...Altho,SHOULD NOT COST $500
The tool would pay for itself in no time, how many companies do you know that offer a smoke test?
One of my toilet rocks but no sewer smell
Might just need to tighten down the bolts to the floor
