Thank you Roger. Very helpful. Might want to make sure the house waste line does not have a back flow preventer before doing this test. Some municipalities might require the back flow preventer on the waste line. I've heard some wild stories of storm surges that have pushed back into the residential waste line. Crazy stories during Super storm Sandy here in NYC/Tri state. Go Texax Go. Dallas the shining star!
Should have some A frame style yard signs made that say " Plumbing smoke test in progress, do not call 911" and put a couple in the yard while doing it.
@@andrewmcintosh8677 that would mean that person is an idiot. Why would a sign in the yard of house A cause someone’s to not call in a fire at house B?
Hello Roger Big fan of the channel, what a great learning resource we have. I know you have created videos working underneath houses. My suggestion is if you could make a video to show how to work effectively and efficiently in tight spaces (not necessarily under houses). But in those hard to reach areas, or areas that are just out of reach. Those insights would be beneficial to us HVAC-R folks as well. Thanks
Roger, the little snippet of the video where you showed and example of calling the fire department is completely the biggest part of the 5 P's preparation prevents pi$$ poor performance. Probably the best thing to help people in the complete process of what you need to do to be a great plumber.
@Roger Wakefield so glad to hear you mention about notifying the fire department. I had a trades company go out and perform a smoke test on my HVAC system at a commercial location which I understand it’s not the same thing as a residence but they sent an apprentice who had never done a smoke test before and honestly just didn’t know better so I really don’t blame the guy for making an honest mistake, but I guarantee you he learned from doing this. He hooked the smoke generator up to the ductwork and started flooding the ductwork with smoke not realizing that in commercial spaces we have monitored fire systems, and as soon as he flooded the ductwork with smoke it triggered the fire alarm and they rolled three fire engines out to the premises full of angry firefighters. 🤣 angry because when they got there there wasn’t any fire for them to fight. He was very lucky that our business has a good relationship with the local police and fire departments and we were able to get them to not charge them anything for the rollout. It could’ve cost them a significant penalty for that. We are also lucky that it didn’t set off any sort of fire suppression system which would have been disastrous. I would say though even in the home, many people have monitored fire alarms these days so you’re right it’s really important not only to contact the fire department but probably the alarm company and let them know that it’s possible that the smoke could set off the smoke alarm in the home.
I use something very similar when looking for exhaust leaks in on my car's (not a mechanic, just have a lot of fancy tools). Never thought of using the same concept to find dry traps. Also I'd be worried if anybody was afraid of the smoke,it's like a glorified fog machine is it not?
Thank you for this! I have one question: in the video around minute 4:10 you say to make sure water is running through all the traps and to dry the trap. How do I dry the trap?
I am a licensed plumber in Florida. Can I just buy smoke bombs that I can light and drop down the vent stack on the roof to look for leaks? I don’t have any fancy smoke test equipment and I almost never get calls for this type of thing. Thanks.
I used to be in commercial plumbing for restaurants etc. I was in charge of all odor detections and smoke tests. I didn't have that cool smoke blower. I used a shop vac and turn it on blow and used 90 second smoke bombs. I do miss it but sadly the company is not what it used to be. If you ever need an odor/smoke specialized plumber. Also a lot of experience in residential as well. I'm your guy. Family and I have been looking at leaving the state soon because it's way too expensive anymore 😞
Also I used to block off the roof vents and have one person outside and two minimum inside inspecting where odors have been present/plumbing etc. Also prior to a smoke test we would inspect all the straight forward failure points with an odor detector first to see if it was just a simple fix. Wax ring/hole in vent/separation etc. I have seen a lot and nothing surprises me anymore 😅
Don't know if you can help me, but I removed my old toilet, and tried to put a new one in. Sewer gas began smelling up the room. I've hired 2 plumbers to put the toilet in, and it smells like sewer gas every time. Used spacers, XL Johnny Rings, and smoke and they do not see a leak. We did smell smoke in the toilet, but none escaped the wax or flange. The flange is old, but in relatively good shape. It's level. Where on earth would the sewer gas be coming from? We see no evidence of a crack around the flange or in the PVC drain. At my wit's end.
I own a house and I have no idea where the 2 way plumbing clean out is. Any tips on how to find my plumbing clean out? Is there a chance I don’t have one coming up out of the ground? EDIT: I will watch Rogers video on finding hidden 2 way plumbing clean outs.

I've had that exact one and it works flawlessly 👌 100% recomended
Great video! Thank you for posting. I wish there was someone in Southern California who provided this service.

So where was the dry trap or what was the problem with the house?
at this one he mentioned they werent expecting any problems

I wish I knew of this 35 years ago when I was a plumber. This is impressive.
We don’t have two was clean outs in the yard here in Alberta. We got a back flow preventer . This might work in rough in stage .

I think he mis spoke. Make sure there is water in all p traps. " wet traps"
Looks like the room got Boxed with some good sheet
I love our Hurco 2 power smoke machine. Its makes easy money.
What if you have well water? I dont think I have an opening on the ground... just roof
Does this drive frogs out of the drains? I have a frog problem I need to solve without killing them
Where does he get those button ups
So where was the leak again?
Just curious what happened to the audio around 1:40
It's not hard to figure out what he said I just find it weird that the audio cut out for a couple of words
We got the old school Honda engine that drive a turbine then you manually pump the smoke into the machine
That’s pretty cool
Trap primers work nicely
can we get one with a actual leak ?
Plot twist the sewer smell is your brother who had taco bell the day before
Finally ❤️❤️❤️
Can you use that in a laundry sewer vent in the house? I don't want the neighbors to see what I'm doing. I've got nosy neighbors
