  • The hitting through the legs at home badminton training exercise calls upon a player to move their hands quickly to retrieve the shuttle with control.
Remember, I use trick shots to teach players to demonstrate their racket or hand skills. I’m not a fan of using trick shots in a game, however, players need great racket skills and be able to improvise when they are caught out on court.

Is there a video on how to pick up the shuttlecock step by step as well as catch it mid-air with the racket?

Hi coach Paul. Hope you are coping well during these trying times. Since my country is under lockdown as well, I am practically stuck at home all the time, so I thought why not ask you a question I have about something. I am adept enough at court coverage when I am playing with my friends at their place. I am probably not speedy but I can get to all corners ok, but when I play with my father at the club, he only needs to play clears and drops to do me in, and over the weeks and months I realised his drop shots are really short even when he's playing it at his baseline. Like when we watch tournaments the commentators say if the shuttle lands b4 the first service line it's a good drop shot. His shots are consistently halfway between the net and the service line. And it's not even a high or slow drop too, it's pretty sharp and quick. My question is, do you think a very slow hall has to do with this? I use the same Yonex AS50 shuttles whether I am playing with the mates or my dad so...

THE Man your father appears to have mastered the art of deception and the ability to hit a consistently tight drop shot which catches you out. Question is, what’s on your mind that means you do not reach the shot? If you hit a good length lift to the rear court, you should be able to pick up this shot.
I question whether you are so worried about the lift that you do not respond to the drop in time? Bear in mind, a shuttle hit downwards gives you less time to respond compared to one that is lifted.
I would also suggest you consider where you are standing on court prior to your father hitting the shuttle. Is your base position too deep in court?

Yes compared to my friends my father does have very good deception. Even so, having played with him for so long, I know that when playing against me, he rarely smashes as his drops are so effective, so I almost prepare myself 1 step early to reach the shot and yet still fail to do so. The moment of realisation came during a point where I was standing in midcourt and he was hitting an overhead from his backhand baseline. I guessed from his action he was going to do a drop to my short backhand and so I moved there arnd half a step earlier than I normally would and I did reach it, just, but still not in time for me to have any real control over the shot despite moving earlier. That's just an example though and it's not like I can't reach the drops every single time but to me there's something I feel that's not quite right. My dad's very skilled compared to me, but even when I'm playing with friends who attend training sessions consistently I don't seem to face this problem

THE Man then perhaps this isn’t a physical issue and more psychological.

@@TheBadmintonCoach so what you're trying to say is that maybe I'm too scared or wary of his drop shots and that's getting in my way?

THE Man that’s a possibility. You obviously respect him so much and this is one of his favourite shots. Perhaps you are in awe of him and therefore reacting accordingly
