Pro tip. Breath out when you underwater and then breath back in when you resurface. Its the constant cycle you must take.(holding your breath will make you instantly light headed you NEED to breath out) Always wonder why you be extremely drain after swimming STOP holding your breath while you underwater.
RIGHT!
@Milkchocolatte1 not for everyone
I was on a swim team and I know nothing about military stuff but I saw so many ways that he could have done it faster such as actually streamlining for longer underwater and doing dolphin kick underwater so it wouldn’t be that much of a splash
Google Sucks -
Well Colleen is right there are opportunities to improve the efficiency of his swimming. For example his arm sweep is pulling him down into the water not through the water (you can really see this with his lower arm).
All that being said he did pretty well considering he’s not swimming regularly.
That’s a fact
"but I spent about 7 or 8 months perfecting my strokes..." I hear you brother, I've been working on mine for the better part of a decade now.
I love your channel and your content, keep up the good work! You're awesome
I tripped over this looking for sidestroke... this is great... very stealthy, no splashing (watching the sped up part even, no splashes!), fascinating... mostly an underwater stroke. Us ladies appreciate you doing this!
Loved the video. Keep it up! Always great watching your content!
In this episode: Austen teaches you how to improve your stroke game
I just asked your mom.
Austin,
I'm currently completing 5 weeks body weight warm up to SealFit. I have a 1 mile swim coming up tomorrow. I completed a 1 miles swim a few weeks ago and it was brutal. This video is going to be a huge help! I appreciate you sharing!
Question is do you have any pointers for a newbie attempting 1 mile with the sidestroke? Thanks again!
Man, you weren't shittin'. You've got that stroke down! Bravo!
Also would love to see a breakdown of the stroke!
Thanks a bunch for the video.
What camera do you use to shoot your videos? They look so good!!
Fire work!!!
Daddy Austen shark do do do do do do
JTsuits LMFAO
Brooo that fucking song man lol.
If only I had as many views as that song did in the first month
Lmfao
Austen Alexander why jt stay hating on u ??
Go dady go dady😅😅you and your channel are the best.😁😁
I know this is late but I do have a question, I am going for SO, I already pass the test and all, but when I do thr combat side stroke, it feels like all my power is coming from my arm I pull down when I rotate my body(the first arm I pull down as I am swiming), and I was wondering if you had any tips to help or if I'm doing something else wrong?
Any advice on holding breath longer when in water. I'm asking because I saw in a video were they get tight up and must go all the way down the pool until they touch the floor and then up
@Austen you should do another swim video... whenever possible considering. ⚓
How do you do a scissor kick I don't understand how to do it
Hey I am 17, and going into the Air Force for special warfare. So I have been putting some time in at the pool, but any tips for that combat side stroke, that is definitely the one I am mostly working on.
This stroke is fucking hard to get down! Tons of practice & understanding of technique
Always did have an idea in the back of my head that I may want to try for the seals. I did varsity breathstroke all 4 years of highschool. My best time was 1:05:26 for the 100 yard breathstroke. I'll have to try doing this swimming test.
You are a great motivator!
yoooooo do more swimming vids and great editing
Just signed a contract a couple days ago I’m trying to go in as a diver and wanted to know why dive school didn’t work out and if you had any pointers you would have wanted before going?
Hey Austen, I like the way you have been able to balance your life between those videos and your military profession. 👍
Kudos to that....
I had a question - which is the smart watch that you use that we see in the video. You can also a honest review video on that. Will wait for that
that's not a smart watch, you can get a clear look at 4:18
nice strike, may i know which watches did you wear?
To put this into perspective, a competitive score for a seal contract is ~9:00
It's 9:30 for me... Is it different from state to state?
@@liquidrope7063
I think it varies from region to region in that your NSW coordinator has a better idea of the times you’re up against, so they may tell a different time, that plus trying to get you to push harder.
For instance if the best time in your region is 9:45, a 9:30 is competitive, if the average is 8:45 then not as much.
9:30 is auto qual on the swim nation wide. Same with the run.
how the hell do you get 9? takes me damn near 15 for the breast stroke/side
Mad respect for you man, that side stroke looks like the real deal, and I’m a competitive swimmer!
Can you teach me how to swim for Olympics and swim team
This stroke alone I Had to get coaching on in the military because I just couldn’t get it completely right. This was 20 years ago and no UA-cam. U young guys just don’t know how much of an advantage U have these days
During the prep course in GreatLakes Illinois they will progress you from trading with hands out of water to using a brick increasing the duration of time for the thread. They also do treading with the brick and the school house
What do you mean by a brick? Like a literal brick?
Hey Austen, what was your swim time when you earned the contract?
That’s soo coool!!
I’m VERY interested in Navy Diver training. Can you speak any on “porpoising” at CEODD ?
A video on YT showing a cartoon stick figure swimming backwards to the bottom of the pool. I tried it and water filled in from my nose to my throat. Is that part of the Aquatic Adaptability at CEODD?
Tips on preparing for the SEAL PST?
Great stuff can you do more about how the stroke works or technique for doing this
great info... add a camera for a top view to see the stroke in action
I'm almost 65, and I swim 2-3 times a week, currently swimming 50 yds free, then 50 yards side stroke. I'm slow because I had both knees replaced last year and am currently doing 1500 yards in 45-47 minutes. Still working towards that mile mark and getting my time down. Good luck to all the future SEAL/SWCC guys from a Coronado boy.
I was a recon marine 42 years ago and we had to train with squids at Coronado, they had great instructor cadre
Great video.
I know how to do the combat side stroke but I can't do it cause I have problems with the sissors kick my legs contact everytime and bring me out of balance and than I have to stop. What can I do that this isn't happening anymore.
Sorry for my bad english I'm from Germany, but I wanna be a US soldier someday.
keep practicing
Haven't looked at the Combat swim for a while, maybe 5+ years. It has changed a bit. I swim the over arm side stroke, in part because no one else does it. It is more for speed and not for stealth... Top side arm comes out of the water and over the top more like freestyle, turning it into a long axis stroke. It is a lot faster than the combat swim. I can swim 1000 yards in under 19 minutes. It is a bit more efficient for swimming longer distances, but with the over arm that splashes, it isn't good for being sneaky....
You don't get water up your nose when doing this stroke?
Your camera angles/cuts are always on point too
Bangerrr
Thanks for the clarification of that stroke
I wanna try out for recon and this is a stroke I never really understood
Hopefully I can do that future eod tech I hope
The Marine Corps could use more guys like you. Too many guys get comfortable. Keep pushing brother, much love
aattitude are you even in? Lol
aattitude everyone does hard work, recon and marsoc are an insane minority in the Corps. I know plenty of both, and have worked with recon. Not all are good to go
Less legs without fins, heavy body rotation while body planed out (head down, lungs with air) with deep arm pulls (reaching to the bottom of the pool), glide and you'll preserve O2 and dramatically improve your time.
Good stuff thanks
Do a video on OS!
hey brother, what watch are you wearing?
Austen have you heard of the Navy sarc's? (special amphibious reconnaissance corpsman) that's what I want to be.
check dwkvideos i think he might have a vid on that rate
Jacob Boeving I wanted that too
Do a step by step on a how to Stealth stroke
I subbed!!!
Have you tried selection .? Or did you fail it
That beat tho 👌🏽
i swam 3.5 K earlier + 25 meters undewater .Now im wading my way through vodka " semper fi "
any tips on how to breathe during the sidestroke? everytime I try i just cant get my head up high enough and end up sinking or getting water in my mouth
Did you figure it, or are you still having trouble?
@@housekilla457 haven't swam in a while but last time I tried made some slight progress
@@thebutcherspecial
I hear you.
This is the official combat sidestroke video
ua-cam.com/video/r8xqxKDONEg/v-deo.html
And also look up Stew Smith’s videos on it.
What it sounds like to me is that you need to push your shoulders down more and then rotate to inhale.
You don’t want to actually lift your head, it drops your hips and sinks you in addition to killing all your momentum. Think of it more as turning your body.
As for exhaling start as soon as your face is back in the water and control it. You want to consistently time your breath at the same point in the stroke.
Another thing is don’t try to fill or empty your lungs. I inhale to what fills like 3/4 capacity and exhale to 1/4. When I get to the bottom of that exhale is when I pull the top arm, and then inhale with the bottom arm and repeat.
Could you upload video about why did you want to be a Navy Diver? I just want to know about one of your dreams of what you wanted to do in Navy! But If you feel put it on your personal area, so don't want to talk about it. that's okay. Anyway thanks for sharing details of CSS :)
Your tattoo looks sick!!!
Im curious how well you can do this swim test now.
What part of the dive training caused you to fail?
Hey Austen, can you tell me what brand fitness watch you wear? Thanks!
Looks like a Garmin Fenix 5 with an aftermarket strap
The face and bezel make me think it’s a Suunto with a NATO strap but the HR monitor on the back is clearly by Garmin. It’s the same on my Forerunner 235. The charging pins make me think Garmin as well but the face doesn’t look Garmin. Could be a Garmin Fenix 6 Sapphire Multisport. If I’m not correct, I’m pretty close.
If Suunto had a Garmin’s HR system and charging system, it’d be a better watch if you replaced the strap but I’ve had my Forerunner 235 for five years and I almost never wear my Citizen Skyhawk or Promaster.
Garmin’s killing it right now. Wish they’d buy Suunto, though, their faces and bezels are awesome.
This one was fantastic .. Probably invite Phelps for some challenge ;)
+noopur pandey he don’t want none!
I don't know how to swim but your videos are interesting. I just subscribed. Question though, are your tattoos registered? Do you have to do that when in the military?
When you first join up, you do have to let them know how many tattoos you have and where, I believe your recruiter has to get waivers for them. And you're not allowed to get any tattoos until after "A" school (as far as the Navy goes). There might be a similar procedure for the other branches.
@@bluesoul2620 Oh ok thanks
Do you have an account on Facebook because someone is reaching me out at me right now saying it you
Could somebody tell me what happens if i join the navy with a highschool diploma(getting in as an E1) but then i get my college degree( the AA) .. will i get promoted to E4? How does that work
There are all kinds of programs to get early rank. The programs change all the time. High test scores on ASVAB was or still is one way. I seem to remember Navy RJOTC got you maybe e-3...dont hold me to this because its been a lot of years and the programs change all the time. It is like coupons and specials at major fast food restaurants. When I graduated college with a degree in Civil Engineering and was accepted to OCS in Newport RI to be a Civil Engineer Corps Officer all officer candidates are paid as E-5s while going through training plus free (crappy food and lodging) (I am long gone as a Navy Officer with a bunch of years in Reserve Seabee Battalion 23 that was usually called up for active duty. The Navy experience got me in the door as a Civilian at NAVFAC HQ with a high paying and generous benefit job) That is an important point. Your experience counts!
I'm here at A School in Great Lakes, and I've seen the pre buds here swim like that in the pool. They do some interesting stuff in the water.
What rate?
Can you talk about why you didn’t make it through to become a diver? Just curious!
Fit4Fun he got hurt I believe
Great job.
Learned a new stroke....thanks
How many laps would 500 yards be at 24 hour fitness pool?
I remember Taylor trying to teach me this in his pool after he learned it at the ymca lol
If you’re a guy like me who’s a senior in high school who’s deciding between SEAL’s in the Navy and PJ in the Air Force who’s thinking of going to college first and has been training for several years, what would you recommend me do?
Go SEALS
Honestly it depends what you really want. PJ's are obviously mostly medical whereas SEALs are mostly operators. You can be a SEAL HM and that would be your focus on medical stuff. You could also do SARC (Special Amphibious Recon Corpsman) and work with the USMC Recon/MARSOC units if you're wanting to focus more on medical while still being an operator of sorts.
probably a dumb question can you kick off the wall during seal training/or the pst?
Yes and you need to abuse it because it's less swimming overall.
I've been to boot. Yes you can. And you better do the CSS if you're one of the 4. Airr must do freestyle. If you haven't left yet. Tread water please. I promise you'll save yourself pain. They make you tread with bricks for 90s or more. 1 or 2. Go set the brick at the bottom, go get it, hold it over your head, streamline, I've done treads for 10-45 min at a time plus that's usually the end of a workout after doing 1-10 laps of walking lunges around the pool deck. And a 2000m swim. Train accordingly. Be prepared to be fucked up. They do not hold back.
I've got a lot of SEAL friends. One that had to do SEAL training twice because he broke his leg during hell wk the first time. He was a combat medic before becoming a SEAL. Good peeps.
Sounds legit!
That's where I'm at now, scored contract for hospital corpsman, but got two and a half months til ship date to try the spec war challenge for a seal contract. Aged 30, shitty shape😅
Lateral transfer from army?
2:37 that anterior pelvic tilt. I only notice cause I have it too, but that is pretty pronounced. Hopefully 4 years later it is better lol.
Is this the 24/hr pool in Long Beach ?
What is the time requirement
My first time I did CSS was on my first PST and I got a 10:20. Already down to 8:30 and got a lot to improve still. Don’t take my final until January 2023
How’s it going so far?
What was the reason you were eliminated from the Combat Diver course? I'm just a regular scuba diver, so I am always interested in "Diver" stories!
He didn’t go to combat diver.
I have Subscribed to your chancel and put the bell on so when upload a new video and lets you know but I’m not getting anything like it
12:27 is passing? I’m going for seal right now, I went to my first PST in Minnesota today with my seal instructor and I was terrible and I’m trying to perfect my kick, I can glide good just kicking and finding out when to breathe is what I need to focus on. The guys in my age group, had 9:30 times and I watch a lot of videos, I’m trying to be a better swimmer.
Technically a 12:30 is a pass but if you want to get an enlisted contract for seal you’re realistically gonna need a 9:30 preferably a 9:00 or less because getting a contract is so competitive. Just “passing” is not enough
Also just based on what you said, try breathing out while underwater so when you turn to breath all you have to do is inhale, not exhale and inhale. I personally just do a scissor kick I don’t do the flutter kicks like he did in the video, I personally don’t think it helps you go fast and it tires you out for the run. If you want more tips check out the navy seal Reddit, people are always posting about swimming tips. Right now I’m at a 7:40 swim, trying to get an officer billet
I am barely 15 and I have wonted to go in to the navy seals since I was 8 and i know a lot about them ask me something and i will answer rill quick i just like to see this type oh videos because I am going to be a navy seal one day it is just a matter of time and plz make more videos about navy seals and I Subscribed to your Chanel like 2 weeks ago and I am going to stay here supporting you
Dude you really need to stay in the military! 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
HOW I WISH I KNOW HOW TO SWIM...CUZ I DUNNO HOW....NICE VID..
What was your fastest time u got?
Meanwhile I can't even swim lmaooo
I want be be a navy SEAL but I Realize I’m not ready and gonna enlisted in the navy(as a E3). But I still deciding want rate I should go for. Any suggestions??
Wait to enlist and get ready then go for it
Quartermaster, navigator. On the bridge of the Ship. It lead the way to good jobs at sea later. (Captain for Tidewater)
Air Force pj or cct, question if you get sent to a different country like Italy if you stay there long enough can you get citizenship?
Romulus if you’re military and bring deployed to a foreign country you’re there for business. You aren’t starting s life there.
Jacob Joyce ok i know that but can you get citizenship or because you’re on a base it counts as US soil.
Romulus if you separate from the military and move into that country then yes.
Jacob Joyce ok thx for the answer
Hey man know this is random as shit but what watch is that? I'm currently in the market for a new one
+Johnathon Brogan No worries I get asked all the time haha Garmin Fenix 3HR
@@AustenAlexander I appreciate it man defiantly going to look at that one. Hooah
Is that the Garmin Tactix Charlie or the Garmin Descent Mk1?
Jack White did you ever figure it out?
@@kemoi-3138 Yes, he talked about it in another video it was neither. It was a much cheaper garmin.
I need a watch I can wear while I swim, run etc. What kind of watch is that?
Garmin has some good triathalon watches, Phoenix series specifically. Suunto also has the spartan series of watches used for triathlons.
Just get a cheap g shock
The Fenix is pretty pricey, although I’m thinking of getting one after really looking at them but I’ve used a Forerunner 235 for five years and really love it. It’s been so beaten up but it has everything. Way better than the Apple Watch. The 235 will link to your phone, talk to you, display texts and calls, has endless apps for maps, gps, weather, etc but the I for it provides for your workouts like VO2Max progress over time and calories burned is insane. Really accurate and you’ll never have to change the battery or set the time. It’s like $300. But what Austin is wearing here looks way cooler, IMO.
I love you Austeen
Hey man, just joined the Navy and I'm looking to earn an EOD contract before I ship out November 26th. I'm pretty comfortable in the water and a pretty strong swimmer but I have never done the combat side stroke before. I start my training this Monday 2019 07 22, any tips or advice to mastering this stroke in 3 months time or less? I'm fairly confident in all other areas of the PST as well but I know I need to master this quickly.
Devin Greer hey man I’m in the wcp and got an so contract. His combat side stroke is not good. Our programs scouts and mentors are retired special operators. If you give me your email we can talk, I got autoqual numbers
+Devin Greer some crucial tips I can offer you...aside from all the BS “his sidestroke is not good” comments.
1. Try to make it across the pool (25yds) in 3-4 strokes of the CSS
2. It is a “resting” stroke...so act like it
3. Don’t expend all of your energy swimming...instead try your best to keep a neutral spine and glide in the water
Austen Alexander not putting down on you in any way and didn’t mean to sound like an asshole. I could have worded it better, “stroke isn’t great”. But anyway I’ve just been taught by some awesome guys and perfected my stroke and dropped my swim from 11:55 to 923 in a month.
@@User-km6kz my email is devingreer80@gmail.com. I appreciate all the tips!
@@AustenAlexander Thank you so much. It looks like I can learn the stroke fairly quickly but these tips about conserving energy are key.
