i agree his life and times should be a movie,it could only be called excitable boy i think, but for a great songwriter such as zevon,it would be great to see the masses really get to know who he was and his music

The best rock n roll artist biography I have ever read! A must read for any Zevon fan. Well done, Crystal!

Fun. Total exploitation. Nothing about the making of lots of albums. And the guy was very uneven. Plus, Crystal totally blindsided Waddy and never explained what he got popped for. Nothing! If she's a writer, I'm a mockingb bird.

warren you were one in a billion. I loved the way as you knew your fate you mocked it all the way to the dirt. I will enjoy every sandwich and every moment that i can before my days are done. As i battled cancer once before and was walking away from it when i learned of Warren's passing. It still sends the chill down my spine to this day. Indian Mike Of Wakefield Ma.

THANK -YOU, I don't have anything else to add,except,thank-you.
You knew Warren better than any of us ever will have, and I personally appreciate the fact that you would be willing to tell the rest of us the whole story. Thanks again Crystal.

Thank you Mrs. Zevon. I have been a fan of your late husband since late 1977 and it still pains me that he is dead. The book you wrote is great and made me wish even more that I could have known him personally. I still kick myself in the ass for having never seen him live. But hey, thank you again for the book. I read it all in one day.

Warren Zevon was a guy who grew up at a great disadvantage: Zero parenting, drug/booze abuse. He left a legacy of great music.
More importantly, he seems to have gained the respect of his family at the end of his life, and lived long enough to know his grandchildren, despite battling an awful disease. We should all do so well.

Warren was a very wounded/wounding, brilliant, and imperfect human being like all of us. I think Crystal's doing his biography was pretty deeply compassionate on her part and must have involved some healing for them both.
The hardest truth I've ever learned -- or continue to try to learn anyway -- is that everyone is doing the best they can, even when that amounts to some pretty tawdry behavior at times.

I do believe Crystal was the one true love of Warren's life...and she is a truly wonderful women. She put up with terrible abuse from a blackout alcoholic and stayed the course..she couldn't stay married to him,but she always "kept him in her heart"

I like how in the end of this he is holding the twins and there is a skull on his shirt next to the one twin. Betcha' that is Patrick Warren. So suiting he got to meet them. He had one choice to either take his three months(lived longer) and fight for his life in a loosing battle or record a final album. He choose to go with his muse. R.I.P.

I just finished her book, and it is without a doubt the most candid and well-rounded biography I have read. It could not have been easy to compile and write, given her history and what she endured with him, but as near as I can tell, she did exactly what he asked, with the exception of some likely quite lurid details (shame, shame Crystal, Warren wanted us to know...) LOL Crystal, I respect that decision. Thank you for the beautiful chronicle of this genius's life.

There's no doubt in my mind that Warren Zevon is one the most under-rated, under-appreciated musicians ever. His wit and music was exceptional and it's sad to me that he wasn't more widely known. And yes, Crystal is indeed a class act. Kudos to both of them. Miss ya, Warren. When we meet in the big Party Land in the Sky, I'll make sure to bring some lawyers, guns, and money!

I gonna buy that book. This is one extraordinary insight into the life of an artist. Artists don't know how not to tell the truth. It's a gift and a curse...'brain to tongue.' No filter. (Geo. Martin on John Lennon) And what a partner in Crystal Zevon. CBS and Letterman should do a cable series retro on Late Night and bring her in.
    Thanx for the upload. Precious.

Crystal's compiled a neat little oral history here. A great read for even a casual fan of Warren's music. (Full disclosure---I jumped on the Zevon bandwagon as soon as I heard "Outside Chance" by the Turtles...a Zevon-penned tune that sounds like a Stones song that got away). Gives you some great etymoligical insight into how a lot of his songs got written. If ya want dirt, there's plenty unvarnished detritus here. But it's obvious that Crystal wrote this with a lotta love.

I have been a "Z" fan since 1976, I was surprised to find how many songs he had penned. My wife and I were celebrating our 25th wedding anniversary with a long weekend, amazingly I switched the cd player off and found a R&R station when they announced the passing of Warren, as we were driving to our destination. We just looked at each other and both began to get emotional---sounds a little corny, but she and I met at a concert at John Carroll University in Ohio, where he was performing RIP!

I'm sure Warren Zevon must have realized the concept of 'making amends'.... He probably made apologies countless times, after being told what he did after he was in a 'blackout' drunk...I have not read this book yet, but the 'involuntary' waves of emotion that Crystal deals with here, just talking about Warren, must be an indication of the loss, and love that she feels, just talkling about him. No doubt, that he said what he could, to ask for forgiveness, for his being 'just an exitable boy'.

@carrots001 Yep, I don't really like to talk about it but I'm in upper Mensa level and it's not fun. It's a loneliness. My wife is a Polymath and while her scope is broad which gives her satisfaction, mine is much more specific which can be very frustrating and alienating.

@porchdog1961 Well, his dad was a gangster and did "buy" him an expensive car when he was young (hence the line in Lawyers, Guns and Money "Dad, get me out of this"). Guess he took his hardships and made the best out of them.

    "Warren's I.Q. was well above Einstein's." ? Hmm.
Seems hard to believe, but giving her the benefit of the doubt, it just goes to show it's not how high one's I.Q. is, but what one does with it.

It's unfortunate that great art is so often self-destructive.
With all due respect, I feel that Warren Zevon, like Billy Idol, did his best work during the most wild and crazy parts of his life.
With both artists, once they started trying to "clean up" their lives, their music went to hell and stopped being at all interesting.

  • @koolguy3
    @koolguy3 14 років тому

ok so to end this "Einstein IQ" discussion, Einstein NEVER had his IQ measured. Some experts have put it between 160-190, but nothing will ever be proven in regards to his IQ. As for Warren, I'm not sure what his was, however considering "genius level" IQ begins at 140, (in a real test, not a phoney online test) and he reportedly had a very very high IQ, is it possible for him to be around einstien's IQ level? Yes. Will we ever know? No, but he wrote damn good songs didn't he?

Sorry, I'm half way through the book. It seems he took much more than he gave. Genius perhaps, but kindness is not overrated. This man was one of the best songwriters but couldn't do anything on his own and either blamed or accused all around him for his weakness. Where's the genius? Everything seems to be on his terms?

Crystal has been abused by a rock and roll star. She hung on because of her own low self image. Procreated 2 children by a self indulgent man. It was all about Warren and not about herself. She cries but Warren finally broke her own chains. Crystal needs alot of self help. She's a victim of her own abuse.

When I hear people say someone's "IQ" is well above Einstein's, or whichever historical public Genius is selected for comparison, I cringe..real fact #1. IQ is a real messed up piece of bad mathematics, and right-wing eugenic philosophy,_the potential of anyone's ability cannot be empirically quantified like voltage... let's just say Mr Zevon was gifted.
