This is Priceless 🦾🏁
Grown up in New Zealand we got maybe a magazine with a pic of these guys, and that was 8years after the fact.thank you so much for this old footage.thank you
I raced the next year 1976 at this National waggaman louisiana winning my first 50cc national and then the next day watched the pros Bob Hannah beat Marty Smith . Bob Hannah raced the first ever water cooled dirt bike it was a yz125 that weekend. Wow some serious history
I was there and Smith was amazing. Turner was fast also, but David Williams was doing some amazing stuff jumping like way ahead of his time. Nose down jumps and major style.
I remember a couple of years after this.Stackable had a pot leaf on the top of his helmet.lol Aint it fun bein from Texas
I was 11 years old, and learning how to crash off the blinkers, lights and speedo on a bike my dad bought my brother and I, a new, (but left over), 1972 Honda CL 100 for $300.00 in 1974 from "Anderson's" in Pontiac MI.. Thanks Dad, but I will buy ,my own dirt bikes from now on. :)
These guys were just a few years ahead of my MX consciousness, (as I started buying the magazines and real dirt bikes starting at the Hannah era in 76), so thanks for the vid.
Some of these guys were in the twilight of their career, and all I evcer saw of them has been still pictures from Marts of yesteryear.
This is the only vid I have seen of some of these racers, the USA pioneers of one of the best sports man every invented, (if not the best sport).
Thank you for posting.
Between this vid and a promo for a film "One chance to win", (about this 500cc race), I tried my best to get the numbers and the riders compiled. Here goes;
500cc
Marty Smith, Honda, #12
Jim Weinert, Yamaha, #1
Billy Grossi, Suzuki, #14
Gaylon Mosier, -- ?--, #33
Pier Karsmakers, Honda, #21
Brad Lackey,--?--,--?-- (Suzuki #3?, or Kawasaki, #5?)
Tony D.,--?--,--?-- (Suzuki #3?)
Kent Howerton, (Husky, #25?)
Is #8 Steve Stackable?
125cc (from this vid only)
Marty Smith, Honda, #1
Mickey Boon, Honda, #42
Tommy Croft, Honda, #56
Please, correct me where I am wrong.
PS, one vid I would love to see is the 1977 125 national championship's last round, where Bob Hannah was told to "Let Brock Bye" during the last laps, (spelled that way on the pit board).

Some of these guys were in the twilight of their career, and all I "ever"

Please, correct me where I am wrong, "and add more big names that I know I missed."
Great job!
Marty Smith was untouchable on that factory RC Honda
4:19 Classic Smith style.
RIP Marty Smith
Brad Lackey #25 Husky
Marty Tripes #8 Bultaco
Steve Stackable #4 Maico
I don't believe that was Marty Tripes #8 on a Bultaco. I believe it was Mickey Kessler #8 on a Montesa
Very nice! Those are some nasty blue scratches but there is hope of being able to fill in the black ones with filmguard.
Looking closely, I don't see Marty Smith using the clutch at all!
Right alongside the Mississippi River, I believe it was actually Wagaman, LA. You can see the river in the background on some shots.
i have two friends that raced on that track in 75-76 or so.we lived in mississippi and we still do.i still have a dirt bike but only ride in the woods now.i just turned 58.
I wish they still held Nationals in the Nola area! I live in Mobile and it would be great to have one that close to home.... I’m a river tow boat captain now and it’s crazy to think my childhood hero’s raced alongside the river in that area!
Where was this race? I didn't think New Orleans had any outdoor areas like that.
It’s right across the river from Harahan! I know I was shocked to find out myself! I’m a river, tow boat Capt. now, living in Mobile, al. I work for a company with an office in Harahan, overlooking the spot across the river where this old national track used to be. While I didn’t live in the south as a kid much really, it’s still crazy to think that all of my childhood hero’s raced in this great sport right there in Nola! Too bad the track wasn’t maintained as a national level facility like Washougal or Millville....
Waggamen , La. Cross the Huey P Long bridge and head up river on river road.
