From launch to impact, GMLRS are only in the air for about 60 seconds. The S300/400 takes 45 seconds from the time a target is ID'd to launch. That means they would have to detect the GMLRS immediately upon launch and then make the decision to counter it immediately, in order for the timeline to even work. In reality, there just isn't time to intercept.

There is also several more seconds from the time the interceptor is launched until it can reach the incoming round, which may already have impacted.
I understand the company that built the s400 claimed it could counter HIMARS when they took the money to build them. Now a lot of Russians are mad that it doesn't actually work and they got ripped off.

The raw physics are really hard too. Ballistic missiles are moving very fast and whatever you launch to intercept has to catch them. So even S300/400 systems have to be in the right place at the right time to be able to launch an intercept. If Ukraine knows roughly where the advanced air defense assets are set up, they can launch in a way that interception is difficult or impossible.

Missile defense is by far one of the hardest and most difficult things to do.
For example Israel who is often touted as "masters" have a pretty dismal record against the lowest quality missiles you can buy that are so cheap a small business could bankroll them.
Missile defense is famously a field where people boast about how no missile will get through. The issue of course is that many will get through especially when the missiles are new and are 3 times the speed of sounds.
A good example would be the Star wars program where us generals with almost no missile defense experience in the 80s tried to act like they cracked the code to defeating ICBMs they hadn't.
The Russians definitely are some of the best when it comes to missile defense but they also are the country who's put the most money into it by far and has the most experience dealing with missile attacks.
This is mostly due to cold war experience as well as there land borders necessitating land based air defenses and hedgehog aray defenses rather than the united states who's mostly put major money into naval projectile defense.

@@jonnypena7651 Star Wars: A New Hope. The opening where R2-D2 and C3-PO are escaping with the plans in an escape pod that was obviously detected has an plot hole. Why didn't they fire knowing damn well the plans could've been on board? That's because there wasn't any life signs on board. If any gunner had opened up on it, even if they happened to hit, it would've been considered a waste of energy. iirc, it was also mentioned in other material that the gunners were graded on shot accuracy. A space pod akin to space debris would've lowered the score. Tying back to the video above, the Russians don't fire at HIMARS munitions because they possibly could be the dirt cheap Grad rockets.

The thing is, Russians do shot down GMLRS rockets, there are actually a lot of videos of that.
There is a catch however, and it's a big one. Russian air defense is like that blanket that's too short to cover your whole body. And Ukrainians, having a top-notch reconnaissance (They have over 40 satelites working for them now. FORTY.), are taking advantage of that "air defense blanket" being to short - they just shoot where there is no/not enough air defense.

Lol “retrain their troops”. That assuming they train in the first place. Hopefully Ukraine will shoot 300km HIMARS at Crimean bridge. They’ll likely get hundreds in the next month or so.

Last I saw they identified the launch location by radar immediately on launch and hit the entire area with saturating cannon fire. They ignore the rocket, destroy the launcher.

"Which Ukraine uses to shoot targets deep behind Russian lines"
    In other words: civilian targets.

If it's a military air field, logistics, concentrated area of troops or equipment, then it's fair game.
Putin on the other hand deliberately targets civilian infrastructure for the sole purpose of bringing suffering and misery on non combatants.

The question is also "Do they want to?" obviously the answer is yes. No one wants to artillery shot at them. However, for the still budgeted rocket that often needs multiple rockets for a desired effect would an expensive surface to air be shot?

It's not really the value of the missile that matters, it's the value of what it's going to hit.

They Can and They Do shoot It down. But when salvo of 12 rockets is fired at ammo or fuel depo only one has to go through and... KABOM!

They just blow the whole thing up and what makes it hard is they're not used in fighting they're only used against civilians away from actual fighting Israelistan 🇺🇲 war crimes what's new.
