Polyphia is the band that got A LOT of people to pick up their guitar again. That's got to be the biggest compliment any musician could receive from their fans.
@@Superpooper-2020 Metal died in the 90s, thats how we got death metal.č You could just as easily play Polyphia riffs downtuned and going through ENGL and it would dound metal as fuck. Polyphia basically plays pop chord progressions with anything Hendrix, Vai and Satriani came up with.

Even tho the learning curve is so steep, the riffs and solos are so satisfying to pull off and keep me engaged in my guitar journey.
@@bolognatious1684same I play literally for my own enjoyment and mental enrichment. I have this idea every adult should play an instrument from a personal growth and learning standpoint and bands like polyphia make it a fun journey.
SAME. I've been playing for just under 2 years and grinding polyphia riffs has genuinely put me in another level. Everything, even down to my riffing and improvising has improved. The way they interweave melodies and use every note/technique gives you a new understanding of how to string melodies together!
I never picked up polyphia but I learned a lot of melodic djent which is the same idea! Incorporating the melody in the “bass” line for chords. Honestly learned so much that way. I. The 2 years of working on that genre, I’ve honestly improved my vocabulary way more than from any rock songs or Metallica.
Wow only in two years is insane! Just wondering, how do you recommend I study the guitar? I’ve been playing for like 4 months now and I’m far from being able to “shred” anything 😅 the issue I have is i don’t know what to practice (I usually just hear some song, like it, then grind until I know the chords) but that doesn’t really help to progress fast and efficiently (I am entirely self taught). How did you learn guitar over your two years?
i’ve been playing for about 12 or 13 years and the past two years listening to polyphia accelerated my personal development of my sound more than the whole rest of it
Dude that’s baddddd ass man congrats for real!! But always remember what the blues guys taught us the simpler the better even with style that’s what makes the difference between beautiful sounds very cool and heart stopping blues single notes!! Much love
Same. I was a borderline rhythm guitarist, wanted to play Polyphia stuff because it was within my comfort zone but outside of my technicality range, and I went into it. Went from LIT to Memory, to Goat, to Mood Swing, to Saucy, to Drown, to Playing God. I learned more in the span of 2 years than the other 3 years.
I started to play guitar when i was 9 but then i stopped because i had no proper equipment and everything. and then i bought guitar when i was 15 and went to music class but i quit because in Malaysia, at the age of 15 we have one of the biggest examination so i quit to focus on study. and then i technically forgot how much i love music after i came across Polyphia like 2 weeks ago. now i started to learn guitar again and never feel this much of excitement. Thanks Polyphia! I found myself again.
As a 16 year guitarist(I'm 24 now) This is how Polyphia impacted me: First Month: *Uhuh.. Cool I think I can do it* 2nd month: *Ok I'm actually feeling it* 3rd month: *Yeah I'm selling my guitar*
Because of them I started writing using hybrid picking a lot more. I could still definitely just use a pick the whole time but it's definitely easier hybrid picking. I want to be more comfortable doing it so that when I come across something where using the pick the whole time becomes impractical I can still do it and possibly even throw it in some solos like Dean Lamb from Archspire
If you haven't already, you should check out Tim's solo in the song Liftoff by Skyhaven. I feel like it goes more unnoticed since it isn't in a Polyphia song, but his solo is sooo good.
Amazing, they brought back the love I had for guitar. I stopped playing guitar entirely for 3 years and then they released Playing God and I went back at it. Now I am obsessed with their songs. I don't know if this happens to other players but I am not a very creative person, I stopped playing for that reason... I HATE playing stuff from other people but I couldn't do anything on my own that I was happy with and realized that the thing I'd like to play is stuff like Polyphia. I love metal and heavy stuff for listening music but rather play slow riffs and melodic solos (Not because I can't do the fast stuff because I used to run down Petrucci's stuff but got tired of playing someone else's stuff.) Now I'm on this journey to do my own stuff with some a blend of their sound in mind
As an old guy, most of Polyphia isn't really my cup of tea, but I have watched several videos. It is pretty inspiring stuff. It's really made me think more about melody and harmony in my boomer-esque guitar wanking. Everything has an impact.
Just gonna be getting my first electric guitar in a few days (been only playing acoustic for 2 years) and I just wanna say that you are a big inspiration to me and I hope that Ill pushing forawrd just like you!!
Just start with traditional sweeping. All ascending notes pick down all descending notes pick up! But of course on the high E you’ll have to pick upward to keep the steady motion. Then try the arpeggiated sweeps first on only 3 strings at a time. Once you can pick everything cleanly and prevent unwanted string noise speed it up! Gotta walk before you run!! I could show you every trick possible!! Anyway! Rock on! I guess I cheated I took lessons for 3 years..
true, but polyphia isn’t math rock, it’s all 4/4 and based around a four chord structure. it definitely sounds a hell of a lot like math rock in some way though

Yeah their songs are actually somewhat simple if you take it apart. In reality most of the melodies are actually in the chord shape. He has a short on how he makes some of these songs and he literally just plays it out on piano, then writes a melody over it, then plays it all at the same time on guitar.
