Great shave, Ken. I use a tooth brush in between passes to remove clogged hair. This new item looks good. I do wonder if it affects the sharpness of the blade edge though. Have a solid rest of your week, friend 🤟🏽
I saw a few people here postulating that the brush would dull the blade. That is not possible unless the brush whiskers are made from a material that is harder than the blade steel. High carbon hardened steel whiskers would dull the blade. Great shave Ken :)
Nice video again, Sir. As for the R41, I used it as a complete beginner(my fifth or sixth shave with a DE) with feather blades. For those tempted to get one; just take your time at first. it is a wonderful razor that will give you satisfying results. You won't be able to wait until your next shave is due.
I love how positive you always are Ken. But yeah that brush isn’t for me and it sure seems like it dulls the blade to brush across it. My beard is pretty thick but I have never had a DE or SE clog on me- especially the r41 or other open comb. I guess it really does make a big difference to run under a faucet. For cartridges I rinse often under faucet and swipe the whiskers out with my fingers. It’s been working great for me for almost 35 years. One less thing to own, store, clean and manage. When I replace blades some soap and an old toothbrush are all I need to get the nooks and crannies sparkling. Glad you enjoy it, though.
Alright Ken, got my order in one on the way. Love your channel! Wife seen me watching and said," Really, your watching a guy shave?" With the obligatory eye roll. I looked her right in the eyes and said, "yes I am, it's Ken Surf..Duh."
As always Ken, another great shave. That Rescue brush is pretty cool & convenient, I'm surprised those bristle don't get cut off with the razor's blade. I always enjoy your aftershave/cologne burn reactions.😄 Enjoy your Wednesday evening, my friend. Cheers!🥃👊
Would that brush device not blunt or dull the blade ? With the DE I just slightly loosen the razor and vigorously agitated in the basin then close it up, good to go.
Man! I started DE shaving approximately 6 months ago. I did a lot of research and decided to start with the Muhle stainless steel R41 😂. HUGE MISTAKE! I cut myself up so bad! My wife thought I was crazy! To top it off I had no experience wet-shaving so if you can imagine--my lather was not the greatest--yeah, it was a dry shave basically. It was rough the first few shaves. Anyhow, I got the hang of it but still, I purchased an Edwin Jagger DE89, which I believe is the nomenclature, and that was a much better start to my new adventure of DE shaving. Since my DE shaving skills have improved and I feel much more confident with the R41. I save the R41 for my heavy stubble days, and the Edwin Jagger is my daily shave when I need it. So much fun DE shaving though. Thanks for your videos.
I would use that brush to clean the head of the razor but not with the blade in it. Doesn’t take much to dull a razor blade so it’s no wonder you had such a smooth shave especially with an R41.
Finally used my post 2013 R41 that I got in a trade… even did it on camera for the first time. Absolutely fantastic razor! Somehow didn’t have any issues with it
I actually did a coldwater shave Ken with the Merkur Progress. Wasn't used to it and had a very bad shave that time, getting ten nicks(a first)! Redone with the Muhle R41 next shave and actually was nick-free, but still a bit of razor burn.
Great shave, Ken. Yeah, I went to Mass at 7pm rather than noon as I had several video meetings and didn't want to hear the "you have something on your forehead" over and over. Interesting idea on the brush. I don't find that my DE really clogs... the Mach on the other hand! So glad that I've switched. I usually get 3-4 shaves out of a blade. I wonder if the brush wd reduce that? Cheers!
Great shave Ken! The rescue brush is a cool product! Would you consider doing a 3 pass shave with the Muhle R41 followed up with Osage Rub?😁. Nice burn😂
Nice shave Ken! I have the newer R102 (R41) and I have to be careful, especially when it is loaded with a Feather. However, your vintage R41 rep is truly a biter if you are not careful. Take care.
@@marvley361 I use a soft toothbrush to clean the razor. This is a gadget like those blade sharpeners which came a while ago. IMO an unnecessary product.
Ken💈🤣💈 Don't worry, age has nothing to do with forgetfulness... yeah right! Nice shave, T&H is good stuff with a noble heritage. Good job with the R41, sure you had a blade in it?.. didn't forget that did ya?...hahahaha. Love it and gotta love the burn, worth the wait. Great video, thanks. Enjoy!
@@kensurfsHey Ken. I have a question. A long time ago you had an oldschool preshave far on one of your videos with like an orangish color label. Can you do me a solid and tell me the name of it? I’m not sure if it was like “rise and shine” or something
I have the muhle grande r89, my first and only de razor I just got. I have feather blades and Baum be shave soap and also proraso shave soap. Feather blades, and an alum block and of course some Nivea after shave balm. First time using it I had about a weeks worth of beard growth, and being my first time, I don’t think I had the angle right because I had to keep going over and over certain areas. I tried to have my beard soft with warm water before hand and really worked the lather into my face with a new perfecto badger brush....long story short, I got severe irritation and broke out pretty bad. I am used to shaving with the Mach 3 gillette and or the Gillette fusion 2 blade disposables....please help with any comments as I want to give it another try with my muhle r89 , BUT AM SUPER SCARED TO😱
Sounds like an interesting cleaning tool -- it sounds worth trying. I've tried a disposable (if not very durable) brush in the past to some success. I've been more successful with a bulb syringe (as found in most pharmacies) to get a good jet of water to clean out my gunky razors. "Open backed" cartridges work better with this, as you can imagine. Thanks for the great videos as always Ken.
Many folks think you’re not even supposed to wipe off your DE blade with a towel as to not dull it. I wonder if that brush might dull the blade. I have no idea what the answer is.
Great shave Ken !!! Super smooth!!! Used the Wilkies last couple of shaves recently on your suggestion a couple of years back, still one of the best blades out there.👍🏻
Awesome shave Ken, thanks for sharing a cool new product with us, im going to have to order one. Your right on with the r41, I dont think you can get any more aggressive than that razor.
Why isn't full force fresh rinse preferable to another costly item that takes up den space? I'm guessing it will dull blade at a faster rate than non use.
Nope dont know know what ashes day is , dont care :) hmmm running the blade against that brush dosen´t that dull the blade, i just run the razor under running water works fine for me, oh water not running all the time only to rins, great shave and video stay safe, cheers...Peter
One side effect I have found since switching to a double edge safety razor... I wear a "Vandyke" style beard and the old "Mach 3" would stop dead when it ran into the heavy stuff. Not so with the double edge, and the more I shave, unless I'm very careful, the smaller my chin beard section gets until I have to start all over again from clean. B.T.W. I'll just mention this one more time. I saw you are a James Dean fan, I live in the town he was born in. My uncle went to high school with him, and I live about 10 miles from the farm in Fairmount IN he lived on. Fairmount has James Dean days in the fall, if you ever get the chance you should check it out. Huge classic car show. Just sayin. Enjoy the videos, take care. William C. central Indiana.
It’s always a good video when you’re using the R41 lol. That Rescue brush could be a lifesaver for many shavers. With the design of the R41, I can see it being more susceptible to clogging than most DE razors. Hope you had a great Ash Wednesday! 💈💈
Ken, PAA does a seasonal soap and aftershave for st. patrick's day called Irish Springs. It smells like classic Irish SPring soap I would love to see you do a review of it
Try the ikon tech, its more aggressive than r41. Anyway, using a brush for a safety razor is an insult to the wet shaving. A de razor does not clog. Thats a brush for cartridges
Ken, oh Ken, I know you just wanted to give that rescue brush stuff a go…but hell, who needs a brush that ruins your loved de blade? I’m curious how many times will I see you using it in future videos 😉
Nice vid. Now that is one brush I will not buy; that will dull the blades, and yes they are inexpensive, but I like sharp pristine blades and then toss them. I have no issue rinsing my blades w faucet running water, and at the end of every shave I take it apart, clean and dry it. Now maybe a lot of people buy this and then in 30 years when the next generation is buying our used razors on the Bay....maybe they will not be caked with that awful icing of soap scum. Cheers
Nice video. Got myself some Nivea Balm as well as Pinaud Clubman at the local market. Gonna try to stick with some basics for shaves instead of going down the rabbit hole of artisan brands.
Ken, you got me into DE shaving and your channel (for me) reminds me of the channel "dad how do i". I would hope that is a compliment, but it is true for DE shaving. I never even knew this existed until about 4 months ago. It has changed my attitude towards shaving. I now look forward to my next shave, picking out my razor and what blade I am going to use. What soap will I use this time? Oh and what about the aftershave! I do have a question that maybe you or a viewer can help me with. My neck is very sensitive on shaving. I have tried multiple attack methods on the hairs and I use the CUBE from PAA. Currently I shave about once a week due to the sensitivity on my neck. On my first pass (if the whiskers are long enough) I go against the grain and I have no issues. But if I follow the rules for a BBS shave IT HURTS LIKE the dickens. Is this normal? Should I try something different? I also had the same problem on cartridge razors. Thanks for all you do.
Personally I don't shave against the grain on my neck. I go across the grain with the blade at a slight slanted angle. Gotta be careful doing it but it gets those final bits you'd otherwise only get by going against the grain. Play around with it a bit, you'll find out whether it helps you.
I guess it's lucky for you that they don't put those ashes on your chin. That Shave Rescue Brush is a clever idea, but I wouldn't need one for my DE razors. But it would have helped immensely when I used those cruddy Harry's cartridges.
That device looks... Dangerous. Wouldn't that dull or nick the razor blade unless being very very careful? It's like when you daydream when washing a kitchen knife and move it the wrong way and cut off som bristles. That is not good for the edge. I can only imagine that a razor blade is even more delicate.
With all due respect to your opinion Rick fm, it's not a blade dulling contraption and it does an excellent job of unclogging a razor. You do, however, have a valid thought. We were initially concerned with that as well. I have personally not experienced blades dulling faster as a result of using the Rescue Brush nor have we heard that feedback from any of our testers or users, which includes several shaves with the same blade(s). We designed the bristles to be at an angle so that they can easily penetrate and clean the spaces around the blade(s).
Thank you so much for including the Rescue Brush in your video today Ken. We are big fans of your work!
Thank you👍👍

Won't that dull the blade?
Depends on how many uses you give a blade. I do 2
It has to!
What should I get for my second ever tub of soap?
Yikes! I worry about the long-term impact on my razor's finish from rubbing repeatedly on the Shave Rescue Brush.
Interesting product! I don't know if I would find myself using it, though, I try and clean my razors pretty diligently.

The Vikings Blade set of razors needs the Rescue Brush! They clog very easily!
