Whoa nice. It reminded me a bit of Mercury Rev. Pavement have many good tunes. And funny music videos!

Yeah, I liked this song. I'm pretty sure I used to have this record, but can't remember this song at all, which is odd, as it is right up my alley. Another sprawling epic from a similar period is Mercury Rev's Carwash Hair (Full Pull). Give it a listen!

He’s high as a kite self-analyzing and realizing he doesn’t know where he fits in

Never read the lyrics to this one... I always heard the first minute as straight up mockery of D tier Zepplin rip-off Hair metal bands in full bullshit fantasy mode followed by.SM with that "this whole thing is so exausting... I need to sleep". I always though the fact he pointed out what each "faction" was wearing was more a statement on image over content/message/quality that was so common in the 80's. After that I just get lost in the jams until the end where the "pull out the plugs and snort all the drugs..." part. That always makes me think of the quote from the drummer in Spinal Tap "As long as there is Sex and Drugs... I'd be fine without the Rock and Roll". On another note, I think my favorite off of this album is "Stop Breathing". That guitar part is hypnotic and I'm a sucker for a build-up.

I love Pavement but I always used to a feel bit guilty for loving them as I'm also a huge The Fall fan and their lead singer Mark E. Smith hated Pavement and accused them of being no more than a second rate Fall tribute band, I never really got it myself, maybe a little on their first album but Pavement were just big Fall fans, so maybe if Mark E. Smith wasn't such an infamously grumpy git maybe he'd have seen it in a different, more positive light.

Hey Mark, I'm also a massive fan of both bands. To be fair, there wasn't many bands that MES liked.
I love Slanted & Enchanted, but there is a lot of The Fall in it - done very well. And they certainly evolved to produce bangers like this one.
      Cheers, Jon.

The Fall are great, and while an obvious influence for Pavement, Pavement is both the better band, and more innovative imo

@@jyjjy7 As I said, I love both bands, but across their 31 studio albums The Fall are one of the most innovative bands ever - creating sounds that other bands would pick up and run with, like Pavement. Now which you like more is a different matter...
      Cheers, Jon.

@@theaudiophiles7889 I never hear anyone say any band is "a Pavement ripoff" and the concept is kind of strange because of the band's constantly shifting style combined with a consistency of quality The Fall cannot touch, and really almost no bands manage. That they did it in 5 albums not 30+ is a plus, not a minus. Other bands haven't really done so because they just CAN'T take Pavement's "style and run with it" because the band's most consistent qualities are literally their originality and diversity of sound and style while maintaining a high level of musicality.
There aren't many bands I'd say are more original than The Fall, but Pavement is one of them.

I think I'm probably just a bit dim but, apart from "Hit the Plane Down" off of this album I don't hear much of Fall-ripoff in Pavement's sound. Slanted reminds me a lot more of the many indie sloppy-strum punk bands that came out just a bit after this. Better argument with LCD Soundsystem being a Fall ripoff then Pavement. (BTW love all 3 of these bands so no judgement on quality. Also Slanted is not one of my favorite Pavement albums)
