If I remember correctly, Morrison uses Wonder Woman’s mother Hippolyta as a substitute during the period that she’s canonically dead, but pretty much writes her in a way where they’re pretty much interchangeable.
So…we not gonna talk about how Joker uses Chinese restaurants as a standard unit of measurement? “So what you wanna do is go down 206 for about 5 Chinese restaurants, then make a right, go down that street for half a Chinese restaurant…”
Joker loves Chinese food, I mean when he was Emperor Joker he ate the entire population of China (this was a thing).. the three things Joker loves in the world: Batman, Chinese Food and Murderous Anarchy.
I'm not gonna lie, this going up slightly later than usual had me in a brief panic because of how ingrained Back Issues is to my weekly Wednesday day off routine. I hadn't really realized that. So, you know, thanks for putting up a show every week so I don't lose my mind doing menial household chores. Also, Rock of Ages! Excited to listen to this one!
I just love Grant Morrison, but I love Sal's Grant impression more lol. It never gets old. It's funny every damn time. Keep it up comic pop team. I love you guys so much. This channel has given me countless hours of entertainment and laughter and smiling like an idiot with my Bluetooth headphone in so no one else can hear why I'm giggling or grinning and they probably assume I'm crazy but oh well y'all are hilarious.
As much as Ethan is known to "um actually" at comic book science, I feel like Tiffany and Ben when together can really get stuck in the weeds with these books.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY SAL! Thanks for entertaining and inspiring the POPulation! I don't know where I'd be in life without this channel. Thank you for your work and for being genuine. Keep doing what you are doing!
Grant: Why is the JL so lame? Young Sal: Yeah! Grant: I'm gonna fix it. Young Sal: YEAH! Grant: Here's Aztec. Young Sal: What...? Grant: They're disbanded now. Young Sal: [Glares silently]
1:34:26 "No one put the helmet on. It's just a helmet with a dude in it!" You know after watching seasons of Young Justice and seeing how much a pain in the ass Nabu can be, I can understand why no one wants to touch that thing.
I think the reason why the Darkseid stuff stuck with so many was b/c it's a really dense, really chilling dystopian future. And the prose in that one issue... chef's kiss.
It's the Mote not the Moat. He's Wonder World's version of the Atom or Shrinking Violet it's why he's the same size as Kyle. This was one of my favorite comic book runs because I started truly reading comics during this time.
I always love seeing a smug Sal in the thumbnail because it can mean three things: 'I'm going to talk about such a good story' 'I'm going to talk about a good story and show my comic knowledge' or, my favorite 'I'm going to dump such a piece of garbage on Ethan, Ben and Tiffany. And they can't stop me :)'
Thinking about it....Luthor does indeed backhand the Joker for laughing over the dead kids. It's never stated but Luthor IIRC had become a father himself right around the same time as this arc was ending. so, Superman's speech here to him at the end makes more sense in that context.
After the JLA is disbanded there is a mini-series written by Mark Millar called JLA Paradise Lost which takes place between Rock of Ages and the Prometheus arc, it shows the league come back together to deal with a threat. Just wanted to throw that in there just in case anyone was wondering.
A Saul, Ben, and Tiffany episode… I can’t wait for the slow zoom in on Tiffany’s face looking annoyed, disappointed, confused, bargaining, and exhausted at a crazy plot point in the book lol
Best bit about the random guy going off at Kyle is over the next few panels in the background you see the guy shouting and screaming at superman, then talking reasonably and in the last panel he and Superman shake hands smiling. Always so many cool background details in Morrison and Porter’s JLA
I love watching Sal fill Tiffany in on all the things that were weird in the 90s DC that I take for granted because of all the episodes with Ethan where he previously covered these things.
YES THE GREATEST JLA STORY AT LAST!!! Grant Morrison's JLA is so freaking fantastic it even makes Electric Superman dope as hell. Have read this run multiple times within a year and this is making me want to reread it yet again.
Great episode y'all, personally I like when a comic explains scientifically how or what would happen with certain powers or if crazy shit happens in general, but it's not something I require. A little can go a long way
True enough, but if they just out-n-out said that. Because of Morrison’s retcon of niles caulder, We’d be back to the whole doom patrol or X-men copying argument.
Morrison's run is quite awesome & surely helped as inspiration for developing the fantastic Justice League cartoons. Wally West still remains the best Flash in my heart. ⚡
This episode really made wish that you guys could check out the JLA run of Joe Kelly. In my opinion a very underrated run and a very competent follow up to Grants JLA.
Another great episode guys a lot of twist a lot of turns wasn’t expecting the story at all. But I do like the Galaxy Quest joke I laughed so hard at that. I just have one question when are you gonna do the Beta Ray Bill 2021 comic Series?
Sal has said they would need to do Beta Ray Bill’s introduction in the Simonson Thor run in order to the series from last year which makes it difficult. They won’t do 2 Beta Ray Bill related stories in a fairly short timeframe and he said maybe do both at the same time so it’s not 2 episodes, but if it’s not around the release of the movie in a month, it probably won’t be for a while.
As a kid, I read this over the coarse of a month without buying it in my local grocery store when my Mom was shopping. My first full Comic Book Story Arch.... all on accident because it's just what was there. I'll always love it.... but mostly for the way it was consumed by me, so weird....
Buy JLA Rock of Ages here! amzn.to/3zblkL8
Finally you covered a good book !!!
For Darkseid
You should do more Sandman
All are welcome to the darkseid
More Plastic Man
I love the _'Duh'_ nature of how Sal said, _"Harold is the Hunchback that lives in the Bat Cave."_
😂🤣😂🤣
If I remember correctly, Morrison uses Wonder Woman’s mother Hippolyta as a substitute during the period that she’s canonically dead, but pretty much writes her in a way where they’re pretty much interchangeable.
Tiffany's looks of indifference and deadpan responses to the utter lunacy going on in this story are priceless.
"Never underestimate the sentimentality of a Scotsman, Clark"
Damn this story is fucking amazing! Not even Big Electric Blue can ruin it.
That is moon mover Big Electric Blue to you!
Sal: "Fuck the ocean!"
Namor: "I'll remember that. That's your ass."
So…we not gonna talk about how Joker uses Chinese restaurants as a standard unit of measurement?
“So what you wanna do is go down 206 for about 5 Chinese restaurants, then make a right, go down that street for half a Chinese restaurant…”
Dude's got a fascination!
Apparently all Chinese restaurants in the DCU are the same exact size, interesting 🤔.
Meanwhile the entire Legion of Doom is just like “Joker what the fuck are you talking about”
Joker loves Chinese food, I mean when he was Emperor Joker he ate the entire population of China (this was a thing).. the three things Joker loves in the world: Batman, Chinese Food and Murderous Anarchy.
"Don't get too into the weeds about how it works, cause Grant Morrison doesn't give a shit." Yep that is straight Morrison.
Man, some days I still eagerly await back issues on Tuesdays before remembering they changed that like 2 years ago
@@creed8712 that was a rough transition period for me
Ahh ppl of culture🤌🏽🤌🏽

Loved this episode, especially the expert cut where Sal is about to drop the f-bomb when talking about Perpetua and the Source Wall
Sal was dropping some crazy puns today. Gotta give him credit
"But nothing happens in the ocean!"
Yeah... and you have Aquaman to thank for that
HAPPY BIRTHDAY SAL! Thanks for entertaining and inspiring the POPulation! I don't know where I'd be in life without this channel. Thank you for your work and for being genuine. Keep doing what you are doing!

"No one put the helmet on. It's just a helmet with a dude in it!"
You know after watching seasons of Young Justice and seeing how much a pain in the ass Nabu can be, I can understand why no one wants to touch that thing.
i have to wonder if he's like that in the comics
@@donb7519 not quite. Nabu mainly advises doctor fate. He doesn't control him
One of the absolute best Justice League stories in an incredible run.
I know nothing about this story and couldn't be more excited to be taken on a cosmic mystery ride! Thanks for doing what you do, team!
Joker: "You promised me dehydrated ice cream! And Tang!" "Where's my godd*mned Tang, Lex?" 😆
I think the reason why the Darkseid stuff stuck with so many was b/c it's a really dense, really chilling dystopian future. And the prose in that one issue... chef's kiss.
Tiffany looks like she's about to go to a Sisters of Mercy concert.
Professor X reading Rock of Ages and sees Lex in the chair.
“Someone’s getting sued for this.”
…Then mordo calls him in for an Illuminati meeting to pass judgement on a Dr. Strange from another universe.
It's the Mote not the Moat. He's Wonder World's version of the Atom or Shrinking Violet it's why he's the same size as Kyle. This was one of my favorite comic book runs because I started truly reading comics during this time.
ROCK OF AGES !!!! Thank you sooo much Comic Pop Crew !!!!
Thanks for making my day better Sal and Crew! So proud to be part of the ComicPopulation!!!
10:00 so you’re telling me Grant and Aztek are the 90’s equivalent to Bendis and Naomi
Yes
The Final Crisis before Final Crisis! I always hoped this book would end up on the couch, just as I hope for the rest of Morrison's JLA to be covered.
At the very least they could do World War III
I always love seeing a smug Sal in the thumbnail because it can mean three things:
'I'm going to talk about such a good story'
'I'm going to talk about a good story and show my comic knowledge'
or, my favorite
'I'm going to dump such a piece of garbage on Ethan, Ben and Tiffany. And they can't stop me :)'
I gotta say, Sal’s impression of Morrison is a joy!
Whenever Kyle is brought up Its only a matter of time till the refrigerator joke.
Thinking about it....Luthor does indeed backhand the Joker for laughing over the dead kids. It's never stated but Luthor IIRC had become a father himself right around the same time as this arc was ending. so, Superman's speech here to him at the end makes more sense in that context.
Tifany always dresses so fabulous

Love me some Saul.
Sal? Not so much
Tiffany thank you for standing up for J'onn, you're my new hero!
Best bit about the random guy going off at Kyle is over the next few panels in the background you see the guy shouting and screaming at superman, then talking reasonably and in the last panel he and Superman shake hands smiling. Always so many cool background details in Morrison and Porter’s JLA

Seems like the guys went into this one with their knives out
Happy Birthday Sal
Thank you for making our lives better, have a great day and year ahead
Back Issues is always a fun time regardless of the story! I love the chemistry, the banter. Thanks for making my Wednesday a great time each week!
The Injustice Gang always sounded like they should be fighting the Newsboy Legion
YES THE GREATEST JLA STORY AT LAST!!!
Grant Morrison's JLA is so freaking fantastic it even makes Electric Superman dope as hell. Have read this run multiple times within a year and this is making me want to reread it yet again.
Yeah I didn't mind electric superman at all.
BEEN WAITING FOR THIS ONE FOR YEARS!!!! THANK YOU!
JLA was my first Morrison starting from #1 and this was my absolute favorite arc from his run, possibly this entire volume of JLA
I love when I have to go pick up books for school and I get a comic pop video to help pass the time.
Tiffany is so stylish! Her outfits are always on point.
Happy Birthday Sal! Hope you are having a great one and thanks for the episode!
I think this is in my top 10, maybe even top 5 back issues episodes. You guys did a great job with this one!
The title feels like a missed opportunity for a JLA/KISS crossover. If Scooby Doo can do it, JLA can too!
Ironic, but both involve the heroes being flung through a crazy dimensional wormhole
Well Gene is a hardcore marvel fan. So I wouldn't be shocked if Gene doesn't want the KISS brand anywhere near DC.
My favorite story from the Grant Morrison JL story! Thank you comic pop!
38:45-38:53, Glad to know I’m not the only one who thinks Donatello deserves better.
I love that Luthor's narcissism is so pronounced that he automatically assumes that Superman joining the JLA is somehow all about him. lol
Great episode y'all, personally I like when a comic explains scientifically how or what would happen with certain powers or if crazy shit happens in general, but it's not something I require.
A little can go a long way
Been watching every week for 6-7 years! It’s the only show I actually look forward to watching.
Many a time Bruce and Harold would share a rat on a spit and shoot the breeze. No greater cuisine than batcave rats.
An argument can be made that Professor X is the Evil Professor X
True enough, but if they just out-n-out said that. Because of Morrison’s retcon of niles caulder, We’d be back to the whole doom patrol or X-men copying argument.
I love the Plastic Man/Circe fight. And I can buy that whatever his default form becomes Plas could just shapeshift back. Plas is broken like that.
57:47 "It's so stupid". "But it's great"
1:06:47 But we are technically in NJ
Morrison also wanted to put hawkman on the team, but DC said no. So they made Zuriel the fallen angel
I need someone with wings goddammit!
Happy birthday Sal!
Oceanic crime is now my favorite phrase
So, like, what happened to Harold?
Is he just dead, because if so then can we just pour one out for our homie Harold?
Hush got 'im.

Agony.
RIP Harold. A true icon.
@@comicpop he should have come back as a black lantern in Blackest Night.
YES! I've been one of the many waiting for this!

I love Back Issues.
The Harold tangent in this is amazing.
15:31 for anyone curious
Sal: Doctor Fate hasn't had a book in twenty years!
Me: wElL AcKChyUaLlY hE hAd OnE iN 2015!
How long until they make Dark Nights: Metal of Ages?
1:31:07
It's stylistically designed to be that way.
The Grandmother Box part was my favorite 😂
Nice to see an appearance from Salnt Morrison, hoping for Salan Moore to show his face soon
As a big time 80's Batman fan I am glad Sal is still bringing up Harold Allnut.
Morrison's run is quite awesome & surely helped as inspiration for developing the fantastic Justice League cartoons. Wally West still remains the best Flash in my heart. ⚡
Tiffany: Who the hell is Harold?
Sal: Harold is the hunchback who lives in the batcave… *dies of laughter*
Tiffany: …?
Should have known if there are holograms Jem must be near by.
This episode really made wish that you guys could check out the JLA run of Joe Kelly. In my opinion a very underrated run and a very competent follow up to Grants JLA.
Joe Kelly’s Justice League Elite is very good honestly.
The “Grandmother Box” thing had me laughing out loud.

Comic Pop is my sanctuary from the absolute misery in the world right now. Thank you
Happy birthday Sal! ComicPop rocks!
Hell yes, great run, great episode!
Yeah definitely have to watch this more than once because I completely lost track of what was going on
" Even the crabs are pinching for Darkseid."
This book is so fucking stupid, I love it.
Oceanic Crime!. Awesome

I really love this story. The Waid and Morrison JLA stuff is some of my favorite DC.

I love Sals Scottish accent so much ❤
This makes me so incredibly happy as someone who’s been periodically commenting on episodes of this show to do this book for the last 6 years
