    Ooof, thanks for addressing emergency commissions. I see these all the time and I often feel repelled by it. It makes you pity the artist, whether or not you commission them, and it just never makes for a pleasent experience.

    • @TheArtMentor
      @TheArtMentor  8 місяців тому +2

      Yeah I truthfully always feel bad, but like I said, they’re also used for scams and flash sales. Ever noticed that? It devalues the immediacy of the commission and makes all artists seem insincere when they actually do have an emergency

    Im gonna be Sean's hype (wo)man again and say to any artists watching this: Listen to his advice. Some of the things you might think wont work, like not using commission sheets or not being cheap, but I can promise from personal experience it works. I joined his mentorship, followed his advice, and in 6 months I went from struggling to get $80 commissions, to getting a steady stream of $500+ commissions.
    Now to stop the free advertising. I hate these emergency commissions, Im certain there are people who just use it as part of their marketing strategy. If they sound desperate and give some kind of story for sympathy, more people would buy from them. There are people I see always charging emergency comms, I go through their post history and it's a year of every single commission ad is an emergency.

      y'all reading this? 😁 Saijiri here is an awesome example as well for how you can succeed using better, albeit unconventional, methods. Most artists are too afraid to try what everyone else doesn't do, but how's that working out for everyone else? Right?

  • @MrsShirotora

    I'm not a level yet where "if you have to ask you can't afford it" but my experience so far has been I have better results when I share something and give a price up front. If it sells at that price really quickly the next work at that size/complexity is more expensive. I've doubled my price per square inch in the last six months.

    • @TheArtMentor
      @TheArtMentor  8 місяців тому

      That’s awesome how much growth you have, yet you realize you’ll have to be confident enough to stop showing them, right? I get the common fear of not showing, but have you considered that the higher paying clients respect you too much to assume you have set prices?

    • @MrsShirotora
      @MrsShirotora 8 місяців тому

      @@TheArtMentor You're completely correct about commissions. I would not start a conversation about a commission with "here's my price per size" because that number is a starting point for me to keep things more or less consistent, not a menu for clients. So I wouldn't lead with the price in all situations. But for completed work I get more "is this still available?" messages when I share it with a price. Even then that price is a starting point for a conversation. (Like, "do you want it framed or wired or nothing?") I'm just saying. That's my experience so far. When I get to the point of approaching the kind of gallery that does not put tags with dollar signs on the wall next to the painting that'll be different.

    I always hated doing commission sheets because I never felt sticking a fixed price on certain aspects of my drawings was helpful. I always preferred to define it after talking to a client about what the project will be and what is their budget. Yet I always felt pressure into doing those because "it's what everyone else does", to the point that even platforms specific for artists have a spce for your prices.

    Put the damn price on your work. Every professional artist I know does this. And I'm talking about artists that sell for anywhere between $500-$15,000 per piece. And in Fine Art, not just illustration.

    Guilty of "emergency" commissions. I'll end up being all "I'm re-opening because I just blew my credit card on taking the dog to the vet" when really that's nobodies problem, but mine. The only thing I DO NOT do is slash prices (might as well wait tables then right?).
    I decided to incorporate "minimum charge" instead of offering small piece's for smaller prices weeks ago. I also changed my mind on having minimum $80 for a 5x7" to $200 minimum for 8x10" or smaller today when it comes to commissions after watching this, plus getting rid of the size/price chart (it showed starting prices on each size) just to try it out. Doing my original art may be "quick", but commissions take a lot longer for me than what people see me do on Twitch (client communication, and also slowed down a bit due to being extra careful with client pieces).
