He is not supposed to sound like David because he's Ollie. Yes David was a HELL of a singer but so was Ollie Woodson. RIP David, Ollie and Melvin, thank you for the music
I agree, and Ollie sounds very good but David had a special sound to his voice. Almost like a crackle or or strained sound that was unique and set him apart from GOOD singers. David, was a GREAT singer...Don't get me wrong, Ollie was awesome... GOD, i loved that group!
He's the closest thing to David ruffian's original recording. His range is tremendous, you can tell that he was an understudy or admire of David its most definitely done in ruffin style Mr Woodson voice is unparalleled the power even in his falsetto He has to go down as one of the best lead singers of all times!!!!
Ollie Woodson was the BEST, the BEST lead singer the Temptations EVER had! This just my opinion. I haven't heard any other lead singer, past or present that could sing like this man! I am still in morning!
Of All the Temptations that ever graced the stage, Ali Ollie Woodson is the only one who has ever been able to sing David's songs and do them justice. He was David and Dennis rolled into one. R.I.P. all of you beautiful brothers..
Eddie Kendricks, Paul Williams, David Ruffin and Melvin Franklin may you rest in peace. There'll never be another group of guys with voices like you all had. The world's greatest boy band.
Ali Ollie Woodson took this cut to another level! RIP Ali! You will NOT be forgotten! He carried on the Tempts tradition of passion, soul and vocal tenacity!!
I am a fan of the "Classic Temptations" line up. However, we have to give Ali Woodson his props. The man was a phenominal singer whose voice possessed depth, and passion. Had he been a member of the original Temps, before David Ruffin, then, as human nature often dictates, people would accuse Ruffin of trying to fill Woodson's shoes. Both guys were superb. What David brought to the group was the "X Factor", of his own personal life journey which created the unique five man group dynamic, and chemistry, that has never been replicated. Check it Out! Ciao!!!
Amazing. Ollie is absolutely amazing. His depth of talent is remarkable. Of course there will meet be any like the original Temps but Ollie is in a category of his own. Amazing!
One of their best renditions of I Wish That it Would Rain by The Temptations! Not taken anything away from David Ruffin, Eddie Kendricks & Paul Williams - they were the best. However, listening to these Temps sing with just 2 keyboards and no other musicians, you can't deny how great these true Soul singers are.
This man sings with the power and feeling David Ruffin sang! I have no doubt that there is no one who can sing this song better! Wonderful version! With all the respect David Ruffin deserves, Ali Woodson is the perfect guy to sing this song, or any of the Temptation songs led by David. I still think that David Ruffin sang it the best but you have to love the way Ali took this song and made it his own!
Ali Woodson reminds me so much of Ruffin, in voice and his way of singing. He has that lil rasp like David and can do that high falsetto like him, but David is the man though.
The Temptations were amazingly fortunate to have had some terrific lead singers during their long run as a group. David Ruffin was incredible with a level of pleading in his vocals that few could do as well as he could. Dennis Edwards with his soulful grit and bassline voice and in this video, Ali-Ollie Woodson with his powerhouse voice does a memorable version of "I Wish It Would Rain". Damn fine.......
I keep trying to come up with words to describe the talent here and I cannot. Ollie's talent was absolutely limitless. If he thought it...he could do it and do it on the fly. The Brother was a virtuoso!
Leaving sentiment aside, lets face it, the talent and genius of Ruffin took the original words and music and made a soulful classic that we will forever love and respect. Woodson took Ruffin's masterpiece and gave it a gospel flavor that reminds me that good music is a gift for our souls from God. If Ruffin were here today he would probably give it a fresh interpretion to top that of Woodson. We will never know. I do know they are singing together in heaven and God is saying "Well Done"
the jackson 5 was my favorite group at one time, but since i've seen footage on these guys i can say without a doubt, its all about the temptations. the voices, the songs, the moves, the versatility. they had it all!
Can't disagree with you but his pupil theo Peoples gave them a hit in the late 90's sounds s lot like his teacher of course nobody Voice is as strong as Ali Woodson but you could tell Stay was done in his and David style!!!😊
This is an unbelievable version of one of the temps best songs ever....i mean ever!!!Mr. woodson was at his finest!..Young people all i can say to you is listen and enjoy cause there will never be men of voices like this....NEVER !
The mournful songs "I Wish It Would Rain" and "I Could Never Love Another" reportedly drew from Penzabene's real-life pain and suffering. Otis Williams wrote that: "We liked Roger a lot. He was young, nice-looking, but kind of quiet and reserved, and very humble. The inspiration for these great songs was his unhappy personal life." On New Year's Eve 1967, a week after the release of "I Wish It Would Rain", Penzabene committed suicide by gunshot at the age of 23.
you're not alone in your assessment. I'm a DR fan, but I had to re-group when I watched this video for the first time. Woodson bro't an authenticity & a rich, raspy-velvet voice of incredible beauty, strength, flexibility, & true soulfulness. With his mobile expressive face & sweetness of spirit, Ollie bro't that ol' time something that tapped straight into a person's deepest human emotions, bro't the Spirit..the real thing..not the flash. My dad would have said, "Ollie's got the real goods!"
That is Ali-Ollie Woodson doing what he does best, Sing with so much. And it is a fantastic video/song of the Temptations. Thanks very much for posting.
2d Battalion, 35th Infantry 4th Div. Bro you are so right that it is all good. Songs of Motown helped me make it through that hell. Going to the wall this Labor Day; just hoping it will rain so people will not see my tears as I touch my buddies names. Glad people respect our new buds and dont spit in their faces like they did to me in 69". Songs of today dont have the meaning of back then!
David Ruffin was my fav. Temp and I did not think anyone could sing his leads with soul like him but Ali did a fine job on this one.I had not seen this before. Thanks for posting.
The power of this music in the 60's was that these very talented vocalist were being real. Music where people are being real is the true soul music. The Temptations music will be selling until Jesus comes back because it stirs the soul. I believe that their song, "The World Is A Ball of Confusion" helped get me back on the right spiritual track. God can work througfh the sacred and the secular if He wants to. Thank you Jesus!
I met Ollie at Baton Rouge's Theater of Performing arts alongside Bernadette Stanis. The stageplay was called"MONEY CAN'T BUY ME LOVE".There were no shows,Rog and Rerun,Kid n Play, and a few more, but it was still a wonderful show in spite of.Ollie played the part of the father who gambled and ran the streets, but it took his son Jr.after being shot almost to the point of death to bring him to God.It's happening TODAY!!!!! GOD HAS HIS WAYS🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
This is probably my favorite song by them. I always wondered how many of the original members are still alive. I love that guys soulful voice. makes u wish soo bad that sum artist would come along with at least a pinch of the talent old school guys like these had.but we all kno that's never gonna happen...
so if you read my initial comment, that's how these whole convo back and forth started... Once again, I love the Temps... they are like my all-time fav group... now Soul/RnB is a broad genre... they can't definitely sit on the throne... James brown's got soul... Aretha Franklin's got soul!!! Even 70s Stevie wonder's got soul. Norman Whitfield invented psychadelic sound for the temps... Smokie Robinson wrote a few hits for them too... Marvin Gaye too!! Put it this way, they were one of the BEST!!
I wish the youth of today had a greater appreciation for music like this. This is AWESOME. And I was NOT ready for 1:03. I almost threw my computer out the window. SING sir.
I am proud to have worked with Ollie, and I think it sucks that he never gets the props he has earned. I think that every version of The Temps are greats versions and offered something different.
On that same Billboard list of all-time Hot 100, Temptations come in at 27, and Beatles sit on the number 1 spot. Now these don't change how I feel about the temps.. or the Beatles for that matter... they are both legendary... I am black, so I can understand your sentiments... and this may not even be the appropriate place for my argument (a Temptations video LOL), but it is what it is!!! These other cats were great too... so were the Tempts.
Probably Otis' best talent for the group was recognizing talent because everybody he got as replacements in the group was uniquely talented...There are no greater or lesser Temptations...There are only Temptations. R.I.P. Eddie, David, Paul, Elbridge, Ali, Ray, Harry, and Ricky.
With the exception to the classic 5, this lineup of the Tempts I thought was the best. Ali and Richard are really good. I agree with alot of people Ali never got his props. There's something about Richard's voice I really dig like that song Come On when they were the Distants, he killed it.
I dont care how he pushed out his words his voice on this song was impeccable, and being live with only a couple of keyboards you're crazey, and I never cared about the majority I have my own ears, and to each is own be blessed
I hate that 8 people dislike this. I don't know their rationale, but it shouldn't be Ollie Woodson. Among RnB music professionals, he is considered one of the best vocalists of the last 30 years.
Ali Woodson was the closest to David Ruffin as the Temptations ever got. Great in his own right. Great singer and performer!
He is not supposed to sound like David because he's Ollie. Yes David was a HELL of a singer but so was Ollie Woodson. RIP David, Ollie and Melvin, thank you for the music
Agreed. They were both great, but for my money, Ollie killed this song. David was the original, but original isn't always the best.
Noone said he trying to
I agree, and Ollie sounds very good but David had a special sound to his voice. Almost like a crackle or or strained sound that was unique and set him apart from GOOD singers. David, was a GREAT singer...Don't get me wrong, Ollie was awesome... GOD, i loved that group!
Stupid thing to say
He's the closest thing to David ruffian's original recording. His range is tremendous, you can tell that he was an understudy or admire of David its most definitely done in ruffin style Mr Woodson voice is unparalleled the power even in his falsetto He has to go down as one of the best lead singers of all times!!!!
Not many vocalists can sit UP ON the mic like that and scream and growl and croon flawlessly like Olie. And the background harmonies are amazing.
❤❤
David could and Eddie Cain😂
This man was the GREATEST lead singer the Temps ever had. Just my opinion! He went from Bass, to Barrtone, to 1st Soprano in a blink of an eye!
No
@@jongodfrey-tj8yjyes
Ollie Woodson was the BEST, the BEST lead singer the Temptations EVER had! This just my opinion. I haven't heard any other lead singer, past or present that could sing like this man! I am still in morning!
FACTS
I agree
I agree‼💯🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶
He's probably the closest thing to David ruffin
Facts
Ali's voice was so unbelievable. We always loved it when he would hit that falsetto scream.
The Temptations History Channel
It comes from the Black gospel church and it's called a "squall" - not easy to do!
Yes,Alli voice was magnificent none other was like him.
Glad I'm not the only one. He was a beast
I admit his falsetto scream was better than Ruffins
Of All the Temptations that ever graced the stage, Ali Ollie Woodson is the only one who has ever been able to sing David's songs and do them justice. He was David and Dennis rolled into one. R.I.P. all of you beautiful brothers..
my boy sang the hell out of this song!
Ali doesnt get no where near the shine he should as one of the greatest vocalist ever. Period.
Can you imagine sitting that close to people singing like this? I can't. I honestly can't. I think my head would have just exploded. Wonderful.
The group of the 60,s and 70,s and 80's could never be duplicated. They were all unique, soulful and spirit filled.
Eddie Kendricks, Paul Williams, David Ruffin and Melvin Franklin may you rest in peace. There'll never be another group of guys with voices like you all had. The world's greatest boy band.
I totally agree these guys were awesome RIP....
I couldn't agree more. The absolute best.
Ali was a tremendous soul singer. What a gift!
Ali Ollie Woodson took this cut to another level! RIP Ali! You will NOT be forgotten! He carried on the Tempts tradition of passion, soul and vocal tenacity!!
I love the Temptations , but I love them even more when Ollie takes the lead. RIP Ollie , you are truly missed.
I am a fan of the "Classic Temptations" line up. However, we have to give Ali Woodson his props. The man was a phenominal singer whose voice possessed depth, and passion. Well said....but Ollie sure blows it away with this song. The story behind the song makes this song a total
tear-jerker too..
Agreed
Amazing. Ollie is absolutely amazing. His depth of talent is remarkable. Of course there will meet be any like the original Temps but Ollie is in a category of his own. Amazing!
Well said. Ollie was off the chain. God poured something into him that he didn't give to a lot of people.
When Ali sang "There's a tear in my eye!" At the end, I almost caught the Holy Ghost" #Church
They took it to church at the end!! Excellent. This is when they still sounded like the Temps.
Wow...This gives me both chills and tears. RIP Ali and Melvin.
Melvin Franklin said this was the best song the Temptations ever made. Check it Out! Ciao!!!
Ollie is such a blessed dude.
His voice is amazing!
Ali had an amazing voice
OW that sat up there, and turned the song into the Gospel version! They do sound off the chain! Peace!
This man sings with the power and feeling David Ruffin sang! I have no doubt that there is no one who can sing this song better! Wonderful version! Ali Ollie's vocalbatics are just another gift from GOD. Thank you Lord for the way you BLESS us.
Name anybody this soulful today! None!!!!!
Ali Woodson reminds me so much of Ruffin, in voice and his way of singing. He has that lil rasp like David and can do that high falsetto like him, but David is the man though.
Awesome tribute to the Classic 5

I'm impressed Ollie wow amazing
I thought no one could touch David but he comes close
he sounds alot like david. Raspiness, and smoothness at the same time. Great singer!
Yeah...but a different tone!
Leaving sentiment aside, lets face it, the talent and genius of Ruffin took the original words and music and made a soulful classic that we will forever love and respect. The black pianist on the left knew to take it to church!
Lol 5/26/19
Hahaha he took it there didn't he
Woodsons voice was so similar to Ruffin’s it’s crazy to me. Both crazily amazingly talented men.
Ollie Woodson, the last of the 'great' Temp lead vocalists...
Can't disagree with you but his pupil theo Peoples gave them a hit in the late 90's sounds s lot like his teacher of course nobody Voice is as strong as Ali Woodson but you could tell Stay was done in his and David style!!!😊

Ollie wasn't no joke but what set David apart was his incredible showmanship!

Beautiful - and with Soul. Buddy Guy pays this tune justice when he does it.
David was his awesome self bou Ollie just " t00k" this song!
ali was just an anointed singer
Anointed? Yes Gloria, you're right. He was all of that and much more!
May he rest in peace.
Why is this just so perfect? My heart hears this and it feels like it answer my questions in life.
A true you tube classic...many many thanks.

Woodson's natural soul in his tone is ridiculous.
That is Ali-Ollie Woodson doing what he does best, Sing with so much. And it is a fantastic video/song of the Temptations. Thanks very much for posting.

My God what a voice. This is outstanding. Vocals of an angel.
Those voices make me glad to be alive.
Ali was a combination of David & Dennis. He was a REAL Temptation & one of the best lead singers. R.I.P. Ali Ollie Woodson.

THIS IS REAL MUSIC!😊👍🎵

Olie Woodson was phenomenal. Great addition to cover David's parts.
You are not alone Victor. I agree with you. I love them all though. The way they sang that song I'm sure it was raining when they went outside!
Im a david ruffin type of dude but I loved Alis version of this
so if you read my initial comment, that's how these whole convo back and forth started...

I hate that 8 people dislike this. I don't know their rationale, but it shouldn't be Ollie Woodson. Among RnB music professionals, he is considered one of the best vocalists of the last 30 years.
Sweetness and light. :)
Damn that dude can sing Lead just like David. A great voice. That is not an easy song. I love that song.
Ollie did this song justice" but once. David put his stamp' on it it's a done deal we miss you guys"
