I never liked the character Sable in this, but loved her in Dynasty, when she was Alexis's arch enemy!! Have been watching them all over again, recently got the 2 seasons of this and the 9 seasons of Dynasty on dvd. Shame Dynasty The Reunion not on dvd yet though!!
T James so true! They were superb in their confrontational scenes! If only they had written Connie as more of a "Mary Carson" like character than she probably would have stayed for Season 2.
SB was only 38 years old when she started on The Colbys. I think they felt that they had to "age her up" a bit given the screen ages of her spouse and children.
As Stanwyck was reported to have said, "I did the same thing every week; the only thing they changed was my dress"....and "I don't have much integrity left, but I wouldn't have ANY if I did another year on this show"....she also reportedly dropped a script at the feet of Shapiro. but all that being said, Stanwyck was still not in great health. There were several times I could see that she had labored breathing. So much that she sometimes had problems getting words out strongly.
Barbara Stanwick was unfair. First off, she knew she had signed up for a popular soap opera that obviously wasn't Shakespear. That aside, she was called to impersonate a classy, decent, and determined old lady, who struggled to keep balances in a bickering family. I don't see anything at all to complain regarding her role.
Its too bad Spelling and the Shapiros didnt listen to Barbara and get her back another season...Dynasty and The Colbys suffered from not $$$$ the actors to be on both shows....
with barbara stanwyck and charlton heston on board...the colby's could have been a great show....if only they had not over extended the writers by using the same writers on both dynasty n the colby's.....both shows suffered because of it.....they tried to make jason into a saint and you dont build a billion dollar empire by being a saint....you do it with an aggressive,take no prisoner attitude...consequences bedamned!!!....dynasty already had alexis...dominque should have been the bitch on the colby's....she could have been cast as jason's exwife who came to cause him misery and did battle with sable.....it is no wonder that barb stanwyck split after just one season....and has dynasy been renewed for a 10th season...joan collins said she would not have returned but truth be told i think she saw the writing on the wall when they brought sable in and reduced her from 9 episodes....joan collins n john forsyth did not get along and joan was hell on wheels to work with.

They asked Joan to take a pay cut in order to continue as they had. But Joan said no, and thus in order not to lose Joan, they reduced her part as to keep her but still save money. +EveDonovan you are partially correct......when dynasty ended it 5th season...they were the number show...joan's current contract had just xpired.....joan was brought in to raise the ratings of a slumping show...by the time her contract xpired....this goal had been accomplished....joan felt she needed to be awarded with highly lucrative contract + a cash bonus(what joan n very others did not know is that john had a clause in his contact the he n krystal cld never cheat on anyone and parts of blake xclusive contract is that wld always be the highest paid actor on the show by 5%;.....joan two big raises during the show....but during negotiations....she was her normal day rate if she appeard on the colby's....that was unprecedented n wld have issues with the other actors who were gettin knw where near that....at the end of the day they refused joan's demand n she inreturn refused to guest on the colby;s by season 9 as the ratings were diving.....the we done with joan n her diva ways......joan has said if the shows comes back for a 10th season she wld not return........major part of the problem...they had sable now....she was'nt being asked back...

I liked Constance, she may had healty issues at the time but she looked very elegant here.
I believe she was a heavy smoker. This looked like early stages of lung cancer which i believe she died of? Amazingly elegent and talented

Stephanie Beacham was hardly underused in the show. Maybe Barbara but i think the negativity towards the Colbys was unfounded

Yeah interviews afterwards show how much Barbara hated the show and left after the first season. She called it a lemon and she wasn't wrong
BS also said that the Colbys was "The biggest load of garbage I ever did." A shame because BS and SB were on FIRE in their catty scenes!

Kate O'Mara... who eventually played Alexis' sister on Dynasty, was originally supposed to play Sable.
