I've always loved the costume designer Nolan Miller's take on 1940s "women's melodrama " fashion-revivals for Dynasty. More than fashion, it was costuming of a very particular kind where women's clothing was another character in the screenplay. These clothes are highly theatrical clothes, and the adornment (In this scene the jewellery) is heavy enough to sink a Spanish galleon! Nolan Miller was a master at tailored "tailleur" looks rather than softer styles or what the French couturiers call "flou" (drapery or soft designs). This is very much a trademark of 1940s Hollywood. Miller did dress all the great divas of the old studio system (Stanwyck, Taylor, Davis, Crawford) and I see him as the last of the great Hollywood costume designers in the line of Adrian, Orry Kelly and Edith Head. When you watch many of the scenes with Krystle or Alexis in particular, there is actually so much detail in their wardrobe it's gobsmacking: he used incredible padded appliqué on those plank- like shoulder pads, Cornelli work, incredible structured peplums that made the actresses look like they were about to take off in flight, and meltingly glamorous fur trim that was so reminiscent of the costumes of Crawford, Davis and chic actresses of the 40s like Ida Lupino (as seen on Krsytle's beige suit here). Dynasty single handedly also brought back millinery in the early 1980s and women everywhere all wore hats again after they had gone out of fashion for 2 decades prior to the 80s. No one wore a hat like Alexis! Her hats often incorporated netting reminiscent of the fashion illustrations of René Gruau. In Dynasty costuming we see the last of the art of "dressing UP" which ended around 1989 as the grunge and minimalist 90s trends for dressing down approached. Linda Evans has a naturally very athletic body and she was a tall and big-boned all American gal, and so Miller accentuated her broad shoulders even further with those gargantuan shoulder pads. She used her physicality often in scenes against her manipulative and more intellectually formidable opponent, Alexis. Therefore, Krystle's apparel is always more toned down (Miller favoured blues, greys, pastels and neutrals on Krystle) and relied on structure, breadth and line. The English-born Joan is very petite by comparison and so Miller went to town with jewellery, hair accessories, and other tricks of the trade (plunging necklines or slits for example) to create a larger than life character in Alexis. She wore lots of luxurious white and "winter white" (an 80s favourite) as well as lots of black and Valentino red (which were bold statements to echo her dialogue which was far from subtle). Some of Alexis's two-toned black and white suits are incredibly memorable and iconic from that period and really established Joan Collins as a force in pop culture and prime time at a time when she was already in her 50s (because she was really always a B-grade actress and her acting in Dynasty is pure high-camp). But I watched Dynasty really for the costumes! And when all is said and done, the real "stars" of the series were Nolan's incredible sartorial works of art: those walking, moving, talking sculptures: the gowns, great "80s Ungaro-style" draped wrap jersey day dresses, suits, wraps and furs that spoke volumes about the characters. Forget Dame Joan! Without Nolan Miller, there would have been no Dynasty! Give THAT man a knighthood! (I hope he won an Emmy at least for the wardrobe in Dynasty!) In an age of ready to wear and designer off the rack clothing on television (many wardrobes on tv series these days are just off the rack designer clothes and truckloads of styling), it is difficult for younger generations to remember that there was a time (as in Dynasty) when a character's wardrobes were custom-made couture creations. And yet ask many younger people if they know who Nolan Miller is and they will have no idea. Yet his creations defined not just TV soap, but a whole era, globally. Like it or not.
