English women were born for lavish soaps. Big costumes and cut glass accents can turn even the campest of dialogue into West End theatre. Look at the garbage in the last 20 years, with all these Real Housewives and the spin-offs. The Colbys may not have been as big a success as DYNASTY, but I'd love to have both shows as well as Falcon Crest and the other prime time Soaps on TV now instead of the crap currently on network TV!
Decent show but i’d watch ONLY for Stephanie Beacham. They brought katherine Ross, Charleton Heston and Barbara, but Stephanie acted the hell out of these scripts like a tour de force and she looked amazing. Sable’s loyalty and mother’s love for children were written in, but acting skill made hers the most interesting character to watch.
@@SaxonC yes... Sable wouldn't have yet been ready to spar against Alexis at that time. She had to develop her diva shade powers so she could conceivably confront Alexis on Dynasty Season 9

Over-my-dead-body? One serious problem with this show was the overblown drama over such mundane matters. Alexis would have laughed her arse off at connie's and sable's little power struggles.

It's like she resumed the same sex-crazed bitter character she played in the Thorn Birds with a little "jessica fletcher'esque" antics thrown in. She could have had a little more bite. The writers could have made it clear that she was the true matriarch behind the Colbys even though Jason was a tycoon. and ran the business. She could have been the one who maintained the house and legacy and the history, while Jason maintained the wealth/business aspect of the Californian Colby Family. That would have made her character the power behind the man. That would have provided a much more interesting backstory and reason concerning this triangulation between Sable, Constance and Jason and why Sable was seen as some gold-digging trophy wife. Instead, Constance seems to be the older but busy-body, meddling, in-the-way, sister with no true position or power and her references about the Colby House seem less like an Estate and more like a boarding home with her being a resident.
