- I finally shoot 70 meters with the Hoyt GMX 3 Series riser and Axia Syntactic Foam Limbs. I also share some of the issues I have found with this setup over the past couple of weeks, Lancaster Archery Supply is sending me a new riser as this one seems to be some sort of a factory defect.

Great review - I agree 100%. The QC is not acceptable on a top level competition bow. Great to see your skills shooting.
I’ve had my gmx3 for a bit over a month. Only defect I can find are some milling areas that were not smoothed. I measured all my bushings and all are centered. Appreciate your review.
I really appreciate this series of videos. As always, I also appreciate your candor about your shooting and separating that from your observations of the riser and limbs.
I have new XD + long foam Axias, and I have also noticed the creaking. For me, it is always the upper limb, double click. I have also heard it while stringing and unstringing the bow.
Used a 27” Gilo and had stabilizer hole very offset used it in Olympic style Lancaster found straight one for me much appreciated 😊
Gillo has a deliberately 1mm offset stabilizer bushing. That's not a defect, but a deliberate design choice.

Some info about my own experiences with the Axia limbs. Though I have only shot the Formula Axia's in my Hoyt XD riser during last Outdoor season, they also "clicked" while drawing back. Though these did it all the time and not like you showed in the video. Perhapse it's something only the Axia limbs tend to have? since my Velos limbs dont make any noise.
For this indoor season im shooting the GMX Series 3 riser with my old matt finish Hoyt Velos limbs, and love it so far. The combination is very smooth without anything weird going on.
After a few weeks of shooting however I also felt like it shot better taking 2 ounces off the back and adding 1 to the front stabilizer.
Love the videos! Been shooting for a little over 3 years now and your videos helped be become the archer i am today.
I have the ATF-DX and the XL Velos limbs and the behavior is the same you described. There is a click when I don't shoot (doing SPT) but the clicking is not there when I shoot normally.

Can't say it's made me change my mind about Hoyt products, I've always seen them as promoting themselves as a Rolls-Royce product, with a price tag to match....and glitches to match along with reliability issues too. I'll stick with my Spigarrelli Revolution riser and Border limbs (they are actually really fast compared to other limbs rather than simply claiming to be -Uukha- ).

That "clicking" could be the springs in the limb dovetail pins. I've experienced exactly the same thing before.
Thanks for the nice review, i bought a GMX with the wood core axia's for a friend, he'll get it tomorrow, gonna check those points you mentioned as well to make sure it's eithe good or something's off - will let you know.
I've been shooting this year the wood core axia's and i'm quite pleased with them (36 lbs) and gonna go for 40 lbs foam core axia's for the next summer season, so far from getting the bow set up i liked them a bit more than the wood core Axia's, but let's see once i start shooting with them more regularly.
Different question, do you have any news on the shipping from Austria? I live in Switzerland and wanted to order 2 sets of the tiller bolts, but another 45$ shipping it a bit much, hence wondering if that's coming up anytime soon.

hi jake i want to let you know i have a formula xi and does the same clicking noise when stringing than it did with the first axia limbs (wood) that you tested it seems to be a problem with this limbs and the fit in the dovetail , wd40 all over the place seemed to be the best solution to make it quieter, on the other hand i think i have the same problem in my riser with the front stabilizer bushing being offset , i ended using the t square method to align the limbs (or arrow paralel to the riser) , what method do you use to align when the stabilizer is no longer an option?
Hi Jake, great video and gear analysis.
I'm curious, where, in your opinion is the line between formwork and gear upgrade, say score wise, Barebow/Recurve, respectively? I've had many encounters with people who will chase the equipment and go into denial about form (A wider psychology/philosophy discussion to be had there) and tune and retune their bows, without acknowledging form.
Personally, I agree its worth considering investing in some gear (e.g. good quality arrows/rest/grip for barebows), but other things like Risers (Unless you're at an olympic level) are less important. I always found Form>Tune>Equipment to be the best order of operation when it comes to working on my performance.
It would be interesting to hear your opinion on each gear component and your personal take on the importance of the part ($ vs $$$) and at what points would you upgrade to end game... e.g. upgrading limbs to high end if consistently breaking 500 with Barebow etc.

I believe form consistency is very important when tuning the bow. Variation from arrow to arrow because of form issues makes it impossible to tune the bow to maximum efficiency. An archer once told me that the minimum acceptable group for bow tune is 9” at 30 meters. I don’t think I can accomplish this.
Sir Jake, I have a hoyt satori, and fletching is smacking my bow hand! Yagar grip? or glove? Bandaid till I get a response .
Formula xd cerakote finish, same issues. I have handled the bow with care, but scratches in the finish are appearing just a month after purchase.
At first I thought I was poking the bow with arrows or something, but all of the chipping is near front stabilizer and front edge surfaces of the riser.
Axia limbs (wood) have riser marks, no plastic gizmos on mine.
The resin core limb did not have the delrin pieces in 2022, the new 2023 version will have the delrin pieces because of complaints from archers. The top surface of my resin core limbs has worn soo much that I made a complaint and was told that I could get the delrin prieces. Hoyt will not warranty normal wear of the limbs.

is there a clear coat on your riser? The gmx3s ive seen so far have had a clear coat added to them, while yours seem to be completly matte.
@8:07 wondering if that click/creaking sound is made by those plastic studs on the limbs ends contracting or popping back into their holes???
No, because I have creaking in my Axia resin core limbs. And they don’t have the delrin protectors.

But since the shelf is significantly smaller than my previous one as well as the overall size of the tab, could it be causing inconsistent anchor for me which results in overdrawing the string (longer draw length)?
Sorry to hear about the problems with your new Hoyt set up. I have had a GMX 3 ordered for about 6 weeks now and have been worried about all the problems you have noted in your review. My riser came in yesterday and I went over it as closely as I could and it appears to be perfect. I set it up with my Win&Win wia wis -ns limbs and the set up took zero adjustment for limb alignment and the tiller bolts were nice and snug on the limbs. I will do the final set up tomorrow but so far it is a very nice riser . With the few arrows I have shot so far It is dead in the hand and very quiet. We will see what happens this weekend. Hope you get the bow sorted out.
Be really interested to see you shoot the gmx3 vs the w&w atf dx and get your feedback about both together. You were fighting the gmx3 alot.
Lots of problems for the money. I’ve been on the fence about buying a Hoyt bow for a few years. This review is likely gonna keep me there.
Hey, I‘m sending this post here because it’s the latest video about Axia limbs. I got some wood core ones „medium 40#“. Recently I had the opportunity to measure the drow weight on my Xceed riser. Brace hight 8,75“ my draw length 27,75. With my tiller bolt setting is 4,5 turns out. The scale showed a draw weight of 43,5“; with the bolts 6 turns out they had 42“.
Jake, do you have experience in which tiller bolt settings Hoyt limb draw weight is measured? In my experience from the older risers like the GMX it’s 3 turns out on the tiller bolts.
Do you also have experience with Hoyt customer service?
I have both the axia foam and resin core limbs. When new, I did not have a creek. But as the limbs are wearing in and divots start to form where the string tension rockers are located, then mine started to creek. I started putting duck tape on that portion of the limb wedge, it resolved the creek, I replace the duck tape every time I unstring the bow. I’ve recently started to cut a piece of sticky backed rubber to replace the duck tape and has worked well.
As for limb alignment, I find that the limb forks tend to wear and allows the limbs to shift. This is both the resin core and foam core. Again back to duck tape around the tiller bolts to remove the loose fitment. I am using your tiller bolt and they fit perfect when the limbs are new, but even after 3k-3.k shot, the limbs start to feel loose. I wish you make the tiller bolt in smaller increments so I can change them out as the limb forks wear.
The other interesting issue is I don’t get this wear from my 35 year old carbon plus limbs. Forks are tight after a year (44k shots) and no divots whee the tension rockers contact the limb. Hoyt needs to improve the durability of the limb wedge material.
This is with an xceed riser, don’t have a gmx3 yet. I am a hoyt fan boy, since starting my archery life, I started with a td4 with the same carbonplus limb I mentioned above.
We plan to sell tiller bolts in smaller increments over time. Even offer custom orders to a specific size.
I did not have the creaking issue on either sets of axia limbs when they were tight on the tiller bolts and no divots at the tension rockers. They started as soon as the wear on the limbs started to show
I’ve got an Xakt with an offset / poorly machined limb pocket. I can counter it with adjusted limb alignment like you mention, but I expected more from Hoyt. I imagine it’s fairly common.
Same here, I am very disappointed with hoyt. I was on the market for a high end riser. And hoyt was my choice since it was made in usa. But after a few months owning my xceed i have the same issue as you. When i get the money. I am going to by a w&w and hope their risers are machine and produced better
@@dracus6877 In my opinion generally they are. I've had two Hoyts (mid price-range) and 2 Win&Win/Wiawis risers. Similar with limbs
@@TracyPicabia damn... good to know, i guess the technology isn't there yet on producing super accurate and even products.
@@dracus6877 many will disagree with me and my four risers is much too small a data set but just going on the tolerances of limbs fitting into limb pockets for example (something that Jake often cites) the Wiawis are always super tight, Hoyts are not.

I was wondering if and how you check the stabilizer mounting for proper center/strightness since you depend on it for limb alignment ... I was expecting you to measure it by eye when aligning ... looks I guessed correctly. It would be interesting to know how much off-center/skewed mounting you'd notice ...
I'm curious how this could be measured too. I believe my W&W CX7 riser to have misaligned bushing too, but I don't know how to prove it.

Can't confirm/deny the bushing alignment thing, and I'm shooting Uukhas from my GMX3, but so far limb alignment has remained consistent as far as I can tell, no clicking noises on draw/let down. I did have the main stab bushing come unscrewed the last time I removed my stab, disappointing but nothing a bit of Loc-Tyte won't cure; not something I would seek warranty on, just disappointing.
The high level of Uukha limbs caused the brushing to get loose. IM sure your sight screws got loosed too??

I have a similar problem with my Axia Resin Limbs, when I pull back it sounds one or more clicks. But if I pull back and let down without releasing and pull back again it doesn't sound anymore. If I shot it sounds again. It's uncomfortable and I can't fix it.
Yes, my limbs were replaced by Hoyt. If you have any gap between the plastic piece and the limb at all, it’s defective and warrantee-able. Also keep an eye on the base of the limb for what looks like delamination… waiting on replacement limbs and riser to make an update but basically they had to change the entire machining process due to the errors I found.
Can you imagine a bike shop sending square wheels or crooked frames out? Absolutely shocking from Lancaster Archery; what were they thinking? Can you imagine how they treat Joe Schmo if they send an olympian youtuber a gash product and then need to have an internal discussion before getting back to confirm whether or not they're going to replace it? I've always been a bit suspicious of Gillo's "offset centre bushing to aid bow alignment". Reckon they noticed the cnc program error too late in the day and came up with some crock of shit like that.
So Lancaster doesn't open up a riser box before it ships out, its factory sealed... This is on Hoyt and other manufactures to do their QC. Lancaster is the distributor/retailer and I just place my order through my wholesale account, they pick the product and slap a shipping label on it.
The discussion to replace it was about how off was it, and does it warrant an exchange or not... Just like any retailer would do.
Does it help to “throw” your arm to compensate for form errors?
How are you supposed to hit a target that far out let alone even be able to see the center from that distance!!
You've pointed out multiple manufacturer quality issues with this system..... several of them regarding machining. So my question, where's the same rage you expressed over foreign made riser with the egged tiller bolt hole and tiller bolt thread specs?
1. It’s not a safety issue
2. It’s actually machined and not cast like the other POS you reference
3. It’s genuine, original equipment and not IP theft
4. I got the riser exchanged so I lose no money (yes I could have done that with the other bow but I did not intend to shoot it and got my curiosity satisfied)
