But that’s one of the reasons the Ontario ppl are so cracked. You didn’t even mention Steven Santoli or John Wilkin. It’s definitely an iron sharpens iron situation
For Master Duel's Duelist Cup structure I think they should look at how Gwent handled competitive events. You have your normal ranked ladder from rank 30 to rank 1 (this just translates to Bronze -> Master). After you pass rank 1 you go into Pro Rank, which is a separate ladder and it exclusively looks at your MMR to place you on the leaderboard. Every month there's a rank reset, and the top 64 people in Pro Rank get to participate in qualifiers the following month, take the top spots of of those qualifiers and give them Worlds invitations, or take the X number of top spots from 3 months of qualifiers and give them an invitational competitive event which then qualifies them for Worlds. Letting people grind in a Pro Rank type of ladder over the course of the entire month will eliminate unhealthy habits of the 72 hour grind, and if the MMR system is sophisticated enough it will neutralize the necessity to have a large quantity of games played in order to do well overall (when you take a look at Gwent top 10 leaderboards each season, you'd see a spread of people who only played 200 ranked games that month compared to some that played well over 800 games that month having nearly the same MMR).
Not every wife approves a computer anymore after giving 2 births , xbox is way more accepted by the humanity. Anyway master duel is not designed for us tcg players anyway so its just a bad fun game
It would be fun if you could get an ocg competitive player on the podcast to have their point of view on the game, maxx c, master duel, the different formats etc
Loving this Heart of the Cast. I want to mention that I think Farfa did an excellent job helping dirct Ryan through his questions and explaining his thought process.
It's been a real grind trying to reach max rank in the MD Duelist cup, but as one of the very select few GhoTear players (Ghoti Tearlaments) it's been awesome combining my two favorite decks and blowing up snake-eyes boards with Deep Beyond if all else doesn't work to stop them. The unbanning of the dragon rulers (Tidal specifically) really is the bridge between Tear and Ghoti that I've been waiting for. Milling my tuners and then special summoning Tidal by banishing my tuners or just one of them leads to so much on the following turns! Just have to hit my tuners first, which sometimes doesn't happen, but that's okay. Ryan is absolutely right though with being in a good, healthy mindset. Found myself getting miffed over my cards being tributed by a surprise sphere mode, or not being able to play into someone's board because I drew my one of's or more hand traps than actual engine id like. Gonna try and reach for lvl 20 within the next week, before stage 2 comes. Love my Cosmic Astral Fish and my Deep Sea Queens. ❤️🔥
If you're not declined to playing Burn, by sheer nature of playing a different game than everybody else who's trying to outresource their opponents you can steal quite a few wins, if you do it right. Some one has posted videos on YT where they allegedly reached Master rank with such a deck, and as far as I can tell there's something to this (at least once you've picked up how such a deck is supposed to be played). Going second is almost helpful, I find, since you can draw into another trap to set while no opponent ends on mass backrow removal, so once they have a board you have nothing to fear but Duster exactly. Among Hidden Blast, Ring of Destruction, Just Desserts, Mahaama, etc. you can deal over 8000 damage pretty consistently before you die yourself.
I think my favorite part of the podcast is how often Josh and the guests are to shut farfa down when he’s goin yap mode. While also being able to take him seriously when he is bringing good discussion has got to be a tough balance
While we talked about the OCG players's positive mindsets, did you know that Japan shops have to ban Zoodiac (back when the deck was a tier 0 deck) and Mystic Mine themselves so thay can maintaince the players?
As a casual player, I'm not sure I actually want gem rewards for DC 2nd stage. It's already gruelling enough having to grind against meta decks to hit DLv 20. It's not that I don't enjoy facing meta decks, but if you have to play a lot in a row the fun definitely goes away. Most of the time I just go up to lv 18-19 and then just drop it.
For the duelist cup if I play I just grind the gem rewards, thats it. As someone with a full time job with the current system I could never hope to compete with a teenager with 3 days off school, so I would say i play it casually.
hi i think im part of Farfa's mentioned casual-competitive demographic of players. i play an hour a day just to have fun but also i have the skill to hit master 1 if i wanted to, i just dont play enough games in the month to actually reach it. which is also why i dont really try in the DC, i'd go insane with that many hours invested, so im fine with top 1000. ask me anything :)
and again you guys had an interesting podcast to listen to. For the issue you had about casual, competitive and the things between... I personally do not have this isse since I started to categorize differntly. For me there are now only players and competitors. Since a few months ago I start to avoid the terms casual and competitive. Not because I think that they are wrong, but more so because it is hard to see the line between those two in a "competitive" game by nature. What I mean by that is simple. YGO is a 2-Player 1v1 game where only 1 of the players can a achieve a victory condition. So the game is basicly by the rules competitive due to the fact you strive for this victory condition before your opponent can reach it. Only my two cents for that.
I know this one is 9 months old now, but I listen to these on Spotify(where you cant comment) but Ryans mic here made this episode unlistenable. Love having guests in and will never expect everyone to have a streamer tier mic, but please for any future guests make sure their mic quality won't make our ears bleed. @cheesycheese7100 I've never lost to swords. Only lose to Maxx c mainly and occasional misplays. But if I'm being serious I didn't know I could turn crossplay off on Xbox until a few months ago. I still don't even know where the option for that is lol
I can 100% agree with farfa on the causal playtime debate. In order to play casual, you have to enjoy the game. I'm logging on and seeing anything about gems being given tournament or not. I'm 100% grinding to max out the amount being offered because I enjoy the game as a causal player. The difficulty only plays a part to people who are either above or below that causal standard💯
I agree with Farfa, Im a casual (but I have won some OTS's). I play meta decks but sometimes play two or three games per day. When events happen I grind them to get the rewards but in the case of the Duelist Cup I just get to lvl 20 because the rewards are like legacy packs and irrelevant shit. If there were some cool cosmetics or gems involved in the 72 hour grind I will likely dedicate at least a day to just play to get those rewards.
I definitely think I'd fall in the casual player realm. I play it every time l, and I always at least get through round 1 for the rewards, but I'm not going to be playing top tier decks for 20 hours a day. Any day 2 play I do is just for fun mostly, cause there aren't good rewards for people that aren't trying to make it to the top of the rankings. I wish I could get more gems from doing it lol
I play until 20 then play a few games every day to complete dailies cause you can't derank and during second stage enough to get into top 10k (I've never needed to win more than 20 games), and I thought that was a tad above casual lmao
theres two kinds of casuals. id consider me and my friends casuals but weve all played until dlvl17 at least. the gem rewards are nice and progression is steady, you can do it with basically any deck. the real challenge starts from there. some are open to it, others are not. stage 2 is like whatever, if you dont intend to grind theres no reason to play this over ranked
if you play casually the duelist cup 2nd stage you play for 30 minutes until you hit the top 20k never again open the duelist cup and then realize that you got pushed out of the minimum rank requirement to get rewards. but in therms of a content creator did farfa probably play casually as those need to put in way more time into master duel anyways
Farfa is extremely tone-deaf and horrible at reading the room. Ryan did NOT want to hear about how people were "furious" about his personal decisions. Leave the kid alone bro tf.

I think the best system would be to limit the amount of games you can play. This would keep people from staying awake for 3 days straight, and also is still fair for slower decks.
