Paradigm - And there must be balance in how we identify our value. Perception is not the weight of who you are. Assumption is to be without facts, maybe temporarily. Thus, reality is placed and fulfilled without dependency on external factors, but internal recognition of self.
2023 April 26 Comment - Leadership Part2 - HBR UA-cam channel- social media Has Made Us Narcissists But There Is A Cure By Prof. Tomas Chamorro-Premuzic. Firstly, thank you very much Prof. Tomas, for your choice of topic. The list of narcissistic symptoms and the scale system (0-10) were both eye-openers. However, those guides were just one part of what made this HBR video very engaging. Narcissism as a culturally sensitive social media topic, is a quicksand. Yet the way you delivered it indicated the risks were given much thought and consideration. Quicksands require subtlety and sensitiveness. To cite a few, your friendly demeanor fits well with the tone and pace of your delivery. Your accent (Balkan European origin perhaps? It awakens in me curiosity), the calming color of your light cardigan, (blending with the soothing ambience, the gradient brown background of a typical living room of a middle-class home) all gave the assurance (by design), you are here not to accuse or reprimand. You are here to assure whoever is watching, this is just a conversation, not a clinical diagnosis of a psychiatrist. The provocative title of the video, however, subtly reminds, this topic needs to be seriously discussed to start the healing process. Excellent job Prof. Tomas! Kudos as well, to all those behind-the-scenes team, directors, designer, scriptwriters, and crew. Your minimalist philosophy, e.g., the absence of a wall painting or a green vase, or an ikebana flower arrangement directs everyone to focus on the Professor and what he’s sharing. Amazing you were able to tailor a potentially explosive topic inside 8 minutes while making the “cure” very persuasive. With the alignment of all those “planets”, how can one not be persuaded to reflect on one’s narcissistic tendencies? Yes? By those symptoms I am a narcissist. But there is still hope for me. Now that my eyes are opened, I can work on those areas where I am weak. With that thought, how can one not be happy and hope-filled? Yes? The sun rises for everyone. Not just for a few. “…Social Media has made us narcissists…”. What is the purpose of social media? Everyone possesses the world of Hunger within, which includes narcissism. Therefore, did social media emerged to bring out and amplify the narcissists in all of us? Narcissism is exclusive, and from a certain perspective, divisive too. Yet, people are getting paid for this negative tendency in social media. Or were they paid for something else other than narcissism? To rephrase, are they paid to be narcissists or are they paid for the entertainment value of the way they “uniquely” use narcissism? Can the marketing concept of say building a “shoe brand” for a specific basketball icon (player) qualify as an incentive for narcissism? No? What if it is not a shoe, but admission to a top, exclusive, hard-to-get-into school? By admitting one applicant over others, are we not instrumental in encouraging the narcissistic tendency in the one admitted to inflate to unhealthy levels? How can we encourage and reward a person (or a brand) for high achievement without encouraging their narcissistic nature to strongly surge and inflate to “sickness” levels? Is humility the most effective cure? Other than being a visible bonfire of our vanities now, what is really social media’s purpose? What were its moral roots or were there ever was a moral root to social media? Can social media help us achieve world peace? On another thought, can the cultural outlier (score of 0-3 on the narcissistic symptoms scale) be the ideal level we should all aspire for to achieve world peace? If that is so, can the cultural outlier succeed repurpose social media, and succeed the way the narcissists did? Respectfully what are your thoughts? As a hindthought, all the questions above are touching the Buddhist concept of the 8 winds. I am eager to continue the discussion of this topic) P.S. I would have much preferred to continue with a deeper sharing of the sub-concept of ichinen sanzen and the 10 worlds, such as the topic of the 10 factors of life, as Part2, but I understand, that is utterly irresponsible. I thank you for reminding me to not separate the discussion of Buddhist leadership concepts from the day-to-day realities (e.g.social media , narcissism and others). If Buddhism cannot connect with ordinary people through their daily lives, then the spirit of Buddhism is lost. Knowledge is not wisdom. Faith must equal, must find expression in our daily life. That should be the reference point. As an aside, I am preparing for a qualification exam with crossover.com. Mixed feelings. Anyhow, I will post my next comment (the continuation of the above 8 winds topic) on Friday or Saturday at most, this week. See you then. Once again, thank you Prof Tomas. Thank you HBR. Thank you all readers and companions. Please take care. Love you all. Emmanuel Redaniel Matuco.
I've thought about this for awhile now! The elders in my family cannot wrap their minds around why someone would want to know everything about everyone all the time.
4:19 this kind of fame is attractive because it came with easy money in the era of multiple financial crisis, high unemployment, inflation and all that.
Im am annyoed by social medias constant narcissistic comparison memes, "People who have suffered most tend to be most kind to others" And theres image about one guy complaining about papercut and another one full of blades in their back saying "dont worry its gonna be alright". and everyone in comments are like "damn right" projecting themselfs on the person who has endured more than others, while others complaining about minial things. and the other example is a picture of kid watchin tv and theres nothing speical about it, the other kid is reading book and his mind is full of imagination and intelligence.
Is there a single institution that did more harm than Harvard in creating a legion of feckless members of the ruling class? Is it any surprise that the creator of Facebook went to Harvard? No doubt, social media has does enormous damage to the quality of life, politics and rhetoric. But this is part of a larger trend of the entire collapse of public good in the public imagination. In an ideal society, people in various institutions work on the basis of public good. Doctors seek the betterment of the health of the population they serve, judges seek to serve justice through the issues they work on, teachers teach to educate their students. Instead, we have doctors who seek to enrich themselves, judges who seek to serve the interest of power, and teachers who seek to barter vocational skills for money. In other words, the pursuit of the common good has collapsed in America. Such a society is inevitably doomed to fail. When the history of this collapse is written, Harvard will be listed as foremost as among the institutions which contributed to this failure.

I loved the video! Sooooo much needed in today's age!

Thank you, Tomas, for doing your part in combating narcissism in the workplace through your research. 🙏🏼
Such a brilliant piece of wisdom! Knowledge is the only effective weapon against today's mass idiocracy.
I've thought about this for awhile now! The elders in my family cannot wrap their minds around why someone would want to know everything about everyone all the time.
Great video. Much needed in today’s world filled with self-obsession
