Many camera revues are not worth looking at, but this is a good review. I got this camera on the day it was released and was first of all amazed at how good the AF is, not only with E-mount lenses but also with the fast A-mount lenses. It is a pity that the AF does not work with A-mount lenses in video. The vari-angle LCD monitor is annoying in most situations, and I often turn it over and use the viewfinder only.

Thanks for the review Julia! Would you mind sharing more information on the stabilization of the video segment you did? Whenever I film video with my A7CII, my footage is significantly shakier than your handheld example. Without SteadyShot (standard/active), all the microjitters are captured, and with SteadyShot, the microjitters turn into abrupt, jerky movements. I'd love to know how you got your footage to be so smooth!
Sony's Human/Eye AF is excellent from the time of A6400 and after, there is no conclusion, but i love the Animal AF because NOW is very good with the AI features !
Hi Julia! Been watching your channel for a while and recently picked up the A7cii to test out after owning the A7C for the last 3 years. I also notice the colors tend to lean towards the cool/"pastel" side, any advice on changing settings in camera to have similar colors to the original A7C?
1/4000 shutter speed is such an annoying limitation. It's what i hate about Sony they always take something away from a product in the weirdest way possible just to make you buy the next model up. Up until that point I was sold, but i dont want to have to add extra glass to my lenses just to get proper exposure that any other modern camera can get.
Really enjoyed watching you use this in a real world setting. I'm quite curious how much of a difference in practice the new AI autofocus makes when comparing to the A7IV. As someone who shoots with the A7IV as their main camera I would love to get your take in a side by side comparison of these two cameras focusing on just that.
I know you didn't ask for my opinion but I was able to shoot with the sony a7cii for a bit and compared it to my sony a7iv. My main camera is the sony a7iv and I mostly do photography! For me, practically and in the real world setting, I didn't really noticed that much of a difference. For portraits of people, I always found Sony A7IV autofocus was very sticky and accurate. The only time I felt the difference was when my subject was not directly facing the camera. But that was still a very small difference. Also, when my subjects aren't people (like animals, cars, and etc), the Sony A7IV was fantastic too but it was hard to see if the Sony a7CII was any "better". You can VISUALLY see on the Sony a7CII camera itself (the white box) track the non-people subjects better on the Sony a7cII but idk if it is any better than the Sony a7iv when I got to the computer. They both look like they got the same subject sharp in focus. I hope this make sense! Disclaimer: All of the scenarios I mentioned above is for mostly photography not for video.
Thanks so much, I'm glad you enjoyed! While this new AF is really amazing, the autofocus in the A7IV is perfectly fine as well. The A7IV is my main photo camera and it can focus on everything I need it to with ease - portraits, fashion, travel and weddings. In my opinion, AI AF is not going to be enough alone to get me to upgrade to the A7V when it eventually comes out, there's just not a huuuuge different in practice for portraits. The A7III vs A7IV on the other hand, there was a big jump in AF performance.
Excellent review and info. I have an a7IV and I adore it. Imight be tempted to add this one to see if I can appreciate the size and yes I'd use it with the small form lenses.
Julia, excellent video with great testing (going to watch the A7CR after this). It was nice to see you test with the 35mm f1.4 GM (like you would use anything else, right?) and the 85mm F1.4 GM. I am just a hobbyist, had the A7C but got rid of it when the A74 came out. I was thinking about one of these new Sony cameras for a lightweight travel camera. I have the Sony 24mm f1.4 GM as my only lens. I think one aspect of these lightweight bodies is using lightweight lenses. I feel like I want something else, like the Sony 50mm F2.5 G or the Sigma 50mm F2 DG DN lens would be a good fit (I think the GM lenses [I like the look of the 50mm f1.4] may be just a bit large and heavy. I am actually thinking about selling the A74 and getting both of these new cameras, just for the size.
Thanks so much! Haha using the GM 35 is a must for me when testing out any camera body. I agree and I mentioned this in my A7CR review I think, that while the cameras are small, once you put GM glass on them, they are quite large and heavy again. Those lenses could be a good option, I'm hoping Sony will come out with some new G prime glass soon I feel like we need more in the lineup.

A7cii does not support type A memory cards. But the All-i bit rate 600mb.. V90 card only 300 mbps. which card is best for A7cii ? I am little bit confused about a7iv or a7cii. Basically, I am a wedding photographer. I need both photography and cinematography. And want to shoot slog 3 600mbps bit rate.

Hey I love the video I'm currently debating whether to get the a7cii with the Sony 50mm f/ 2.5 lens. Or get the Sony a6700 with the kit 10-20mm lens along with the sigma 30mm f/1.4 lens. My ultimate goal is just to take videos and edit them to have them look cinematic like some I've seen online. As well as take some pictures, but mostly videos. Please help, l've done extensive research and the a6700 is loved by many, and I can't find much information on the a7c ii (maybe due to the crazy price difference). Yet again great video!!

Yeah it's not sponsored. I personally work with Sony Australia and they loan me the camera bodies with no expectation of what I'm going to do with it/say about it. So I can make a YT video if I want, I can say good/bad things about it, etc. Then I return it afterwards.

I would only get it because of the look, because it looks similar to the fuji X100 V. I am looking for a successor for my 5D MK III, but since there is only 1 card slot and the small viewfinder, which would certainly bother me, since I always look through the viewfinder, there was no digital viewfinder. but the extremely good ai autofocus is already a very good selling point. maybe the Alpha IV is the better successor, even if it doesn't look as good and the autofocus is worse anyway good video :)

Thoughts on the A7C ii versus the Fujifilm XS20 that you previously reviewed. Granted it’s FF vs. APSC; however, is the difference in sensor worth 1K more?
Depends on your purpose and future upgrade path (if there's any). As a Fujifilm shooter, I really appreciate the smaller form factor (when you acccount for lenses) for casual, street and travel. The jpg colours are really customisable which makes editing easier for me. For professional work, I would require 2 card slots (immediate back up) which the A7Cii lacks so would go with the A7 series. But I also shoot Fujifilm for my professional work and have found that social media pushes the FF vs APSC narrative too hard. For me, jumping from APSC to Medium Format makes more sense than FF.
Julia, great review as always. A suggestion for another video that I think you’d hit out of the park One is HEIF vs jpeg. I think several social media platforms now accept HEIF and I’m wondering if there is a visible difference with its wider gamut. Anyway thank you for all your content!
I watched this video immediately after I watched a7cr video and I noticed a7c ii has purple/bluish tint color sooc. If this is the final color rendition I think the original a7c has better color sooc. A7Cr is even better imo.
Would love to see if you do a blind shootout between this and the old A7C. Make DAN take pictures and set it up for you to guess :D Very excited about these releases, just love the idea of a compact full frame. Will grab an old used one though probably :)
Idk, even watching at 4k. I just dont see anything wrong with the images or video. Nothing that would matter to some one using the camera for personal use. Some very fringe issues when considering pro uses. And the same old complaint about 1 card slot. Im sure plenty of people have lost at least 1 mem card before. But at least in my life, not one has ever went bad. So i think id just roll with one and back up more often. Pretty sure it has a wireless backup option to. So can just dump frequently. Little annoying, but safer even then 2 cards imo.

Thank you! That is entirely up to the editing software and when they decide to update. Usually it’s like a month or so after the camera release, but it’s always different. Eye AF is great, from my experience it nails iris focus really well. Same goes with the A7CR. Not sure about flash, what kind of issues are you thinking? I can test it out

I believe it is a first curtain electronic shutter. You are more experienced than I in that regard so please feel free to drop knowledge my way. Also since it only goes to 1/4000 do you think hss will be an issue if I wanted to shoot with my lens at 1.8? If you suggest Nd filters is there one that you would recommend that has provided you with optimal results? I know that is alot to unpack but any advice or recommendations would be appreciated. the a7iv is a better camera. although i wasnt impressed with it anyway. if this a7cii was under 2k then it wouldve been more worth it, but at $2200 rather stick to your a7iv

Hi. I am interested in purchasing a good camera to learn photography (a device that will help me in the future and in the video field). He wants me to shoot 4K clips for UA-cam. But the photo part is also very important. What should I choose between Sony a7c 2 and Sony a6700? (full frame VS crop). On the lens side, the a6700 being a crop is cheaper.
I recall in the a7IV that in PAL in XAVCS HS , it only has a 50p so it's cropped. while NTSC it has 60p and 24p. So its an unfinished option. Its 10 bit 4:2:0, 75mbps so it's great for daily capturing. Just seems unfinished because I doubt sony will add that setting in the a7iv.
Do you think the A7CII paired with the Sony FE 85mm f1.8 Lens would be good for taking headshots/portraits and getting clear/in focus eyes? I currently have this lens paired with a A6500 and get fuzzy looking eyes and image quality not crystal clear. I'm looking to upgrade and want to know if this would be a good choice camera. Unless you have any other recommendations. Thank You!
Hi Julia, Sony just came out with the A7C II and A7C R. I plan on using the camera mainly for still photography and maybe little video for hobby. I am not a professional. Is there a downside ot having high megapixel camera like A7C R? I recently purchased the Sony FE 24-70mm F.2.8 GM II lens for the camera.
The downside of high megapixel is that the memory needed to store the images will be higher. Also you will need a decent laptop/computer to be able process those files in a fast manner
@@samcousinsphotography I ended up buying the A7C II. I should be getting by October 10. I figure 33 MP is good enough for me. I am just an amateur who wanted a decent camera for traveling. My A7C II paired with my Sony FE 24-70mm F.2.8 GM II lens should meet most of my needs.

Your editing skills and creative eye for portraits really are a step above the rest, and I’m finally starting to get skin tones to look decent myself. Idk if it’s just intuitive to you, but in videos you sometimes say you edit colours in a certain way because it “looks good”, and while I agree it can be difficult to understand WHY it does, and your reasoning for making the colours look like that. I suppose it has something to do with colour theory. Anyways, thanks!
Could you please check at 10.57 of your video...there is ISO difference, so the video looked dull in Sony a7c ii...please keep the same settings and let us know if it is still dull...
Oh I forgot to ask, anyone if you know, does this camera being a hybrid, does it have a video recording time limit? Or can it film continuously? I'm burdened by my 29min limits on my cameras, wish to get one that doesn't have this.
Hey, can someone that owns the A7Cii tell me what MB size ranges the 3 Lossless Compressed sizes are when it comes to brackets? Could someone fire a quick test? Shoot 3 brackets 2 stops apart with the Lossless Compressed L, M, and S and tell me those numbers?
From my testing on location I could see there is an improvement, but I am still working on getting all the footage for my comparison videos so I would need to look at it side by side to tell for sure. I will upload those videos soon!
Hi, Julia. How comfortable was it using the 135 GM and the 35 1.4 GM with the new grip? I use the A7C as my walking around camera, and I only use small lenses on it, because it wouldn't be comfortable to hold. Do you think it is worth the upgrade? Same question for the A7CR. Also, are focus selection and tracking now on par with the A1?
Thanks for watching! It’s more comfortable than the A7C was but since it’s a pretty big lens, it’s a bit front heavy when using it on such a compact body. The grip makes it more enjoyable to use though! And yes AF is amazing, it’s the same tech as what’s in the A7RV which is the latest Sony AF 😊
High end sensor and focus, but the camera shake lets it down a bit, probably due to body size. I may still get it, But really. make the body bigger and put a proper IBIS in it. like any Panasonic does. Please..
Thanks for that, does the image in this A7cii look as good as the A7-4? or other FF cameras (Canon/ Nik FF?.. I know A7xii has the same sensor, but sometimes the sensor/ cpu combo can affect the final output. and I do trust your judgement :-)
I'm not gonna lie, I was a bit disappointed after watching this video! Because I wanted to get this camera for photography & video! But it seems to do not good in video compared to the ZV-E1! Because I wanted to decide which is better! Now my decision is easier! Actually
@@truthseeker6804 AI is a stupid word I hate it tbh. It’s the autofocus that is a big upgrade. Better depth detection is a huge one for Sony. If you tried canons dpaf2 you know what I am talking about. Overall it’s sad Sony doesn’t upgrade there cameras with firmware.
price? this a7cii is an a7iv with less features, just like canon r8 is r6ii with less features. the canon r8 is $1500 this a7cii is $2200. at that price theres alot more competition. the canon r8 has no competition.
@@truthseeker6804 The R8 has no IBIS and to date a smaller lens selection to my understanding. The A7CII with IBSI puts it more in class with the R6MkII, I'll have to go back and check but none of the other (entry level) Canon full frames have IBIS. And the A7CII is almost as small as an M6MkII was. If size weren't an issue for me I'd be R6MkII all the way.
@@dannydivine7699 so youre paying $700 more over the r8 for ibis? sony ibis isnt even impressive tbh. at $2200 id rather get panasonic s5ii or s5iix there you get a much better ibis. have you seen anyone vlogging only with sony ibis? you would need digital stabilization. as i said, at $2200 theres way too much competition, and its closer to r6ii, a7iv, s5iix, zve1. so you cant really compare this sony ibis to the canons. the canons ibis is way better.

Good, but as I do more video, the ZV E1 (which is now £450 off in the UK) is a better choice for full frame 60fps, 4k 120 and low light.

I would only get it because of the look, because it looks similar to the fuji X100 V. I am looking for a successor for my 5D MK III, but since there is only 1 card slot and the small viewfinder, which would certainly bother me, since I always look through the viewfinder, there was no digital viewfinder.
but the extremely good ai autofocus is already a very good selling point. maybe the Alpha IV is the better successor, even if it doesn't look as good and the autofocus is worse

Thoughts on the A7C ii versus the Fujifilm XS20 that you previously reviewed. Granted it’s FF vs. APSC; however, is the difference in sensor worth 1K more?
Depends on your purpose and future upgrade path (if there's any).
As a Fujifilm shooter, I really appreciate the smaller form factor (when you acccount for lenses) for casual, street and travel. The jpg colours are really customisable which makes editing easier for me.
For professional work, I would require 2 card slots (immediate back up) which the A7Cii lacks so would go with the A7 series. But I also shoot Fujifilm for my professional work and have found that social media pushes the FF vs APSC narrative too hard. For me, jumping from APSC to Medium Format makes more sense than FF.

I watched this video immediately after I watched a7cr video and I noticed a7c ii has purple/bluish tint color sooc. If this is the final color rendition I think the original a7c has better color sooc. A7Cr is even better imo.
Would love to see if you do a blind shootout between this and the old A7C. Make DAN take pictures and set it up for you to guess :D

Idk, even watching at 4k. I just dont see anything wrong with the images or video. Nothing that would matter to some one using the camera for personal use. Some very fringe issues when considering pro uses. And the same old complaint about 1 card slot. Im sure plenty of people have lost at least 1 mem card before. But at least in my life, not one has ever went bad. So i think id just roll with one and back up more often. Pretty sure it has a wireless backup option to. So can just dump frequently. Little annoying, but safer even then 2 cards imo.

Thank you! That is entirely up to the editing software and when they decide to update. Usually it’s like a month or so after the camera release, but it’s always different. Eye AF is great, from my experience it nails iris focus really well. Same goes with the A7CR. Not sure about flash, what kind of issues are you thinking? I can test it out

I believe it is a first curtain electronic shutter. You are more experienced than I in that regard so please feel free to drop knowledge my way. Also since it only goes to 1/4000 do you think hss will be an issue if I wanted to shoot with my lens at 1.8? If you suggest Nd filters is there one that you would recommend that has provided you with optimal results? I know that is alot to unpack but any advice or recommendations would be appreciated. the a7iv is a better camera. although i wasnt impressed with it anyway. if this a7cii was under 2k then it wouldve been more worth it, but at $2200 rather stick to your a7iv

Hi. I am interested in purchasing a good camera to learn photography (a device that will help me in the future and in the video field). He wants me to shoot 4K clips for UA-cam. But the photo part is also very important. What should I choose between Sony a7c 2 and Sony a6700? (full frame VS crop). On the lens side, the a6700 being a crop is cheaper.
depends what you’re doing long term
I recall in the a7IV that in PAL in XAVCS HS , it only has a 50p so it's cropped.
while NTSC it has 60p and 24p. So its an unfinished option.
Its 10 bit 4:2:0, 75mbps so it's great for daily capturing. Just seems unfinished because I doubt sony will add that setting in the a7iv.

Do you think the A7CII paired with the Sony FE 85mm f1.8 Lens would be good for taking headshots/portraits and getting clear/in focus eyes? I currently have this lens paired with a A6500 and get fuzzy looking eyes and image quality not crystal clear. I'm looking to upgrade and want to know if this would be a good choice camera. Sony just came out with the A7C II and A7C R. I plan on using the camera mainly for still photography and maybe little video for hobby. I am not a professional. Is there a downside ot having high megapixel camera like A7C R? I recently purchased the Sony FE 24-70mm F.2.8 GM II lens for the camera.
For video there is, not photo. Video has cropping, rolling shuter.
The downside of high megapixel is that the memory needed to store the images will be higher.
Also you will need a decent laptop/computer to be able process those files in a fast manner

Your editing skills and creative eye for portraits really are a step above the rest, and I’m finally starting to get skin tones to look decent myself. Idk if it’s just intuitive to you, but in videos you sometimes say you edit colours in a certain way because it “looks good”, and while I agree it can be difficult to understand WHY it does, and your reasoning for making the colours look like that. I suppose it has something to do with colour theory. Anyways, thanks!

Hey, can someone that owns the A7Cii tell me what MB size ranges the 3 Lossless Compressed sizes are when it comes to brackets?
Could someone fire a quick test? Shoot 3 brackets 2 stops apart with the Lossless Compressed L, M, and S and tell me those numbers?
In practice, how does the IBIS of a7cii compare to the a7iv? Is the improvement noticeable?
From my testing on location I could see there is an improvement, but I am still working on getting all the footage for my comparison videos so I would need to look at it side by side to tell for sure. I will upload those videos soon!

Hi, Julia. How comfortable was it using the 135 GM and the 35 1.4 GM with the new grip? I use the A7C as my walking around camera, and I only use small lenses on it, because it wouldn't be comfortable to hold. Do you think it is worth the upgrade? Same question for the A7CR. Also, are focus selection and tracking now on par with the A1?
Thanks for watching! It’s more comfortable than the A7C was but since it’s a pretty big lens, it’s a bit front heavy when using it on such a compact body. The grip makes it more enjoyable to use though! And yes AF is amazing, it’s the same tech as what’s in the A7RV which is the latest Sony AF 😊

According to my spec sheet, it's the exact same LCD as the A7IV.
High end sensor and focus, but the camera shake lets it down a bit, probably due to body size. I may still get it, But really. make the body bigger and put a proper IBIS in it. like any Panasonic does. Please..
If that’s what you want then you’d probably be more interested in the A7IV but the ibis is still not super amazing

You can still have a 1/8000 shutterspeed when you change to electronic shutter. With mechanical it’s 1/4000

price? this a7cii is an a7iv with less features, just like canon r8 is r6ii with less features. the canon r8 is $1500 this a7cii is $2200. at that price theres alot more competition. the canon r8 has no competition.
@@truthseeker6804 The R8 has no IBIS and to date a smaller lens selection to my understanding. The A7CII with IBSI puts it more in class with the R6MkII, I'll have to go back and check but none of the other (entry level) Canon full frames have IBIS. And the A7CII is almost as small as an M6MkII was. If size weren't an issue for me I'd be R6MkII all the way.
