      I like the design with the EVF in the corner ! I would have bought a A7CR, if the EVF had much higher resolution and higher magnification, Sony could have made the camera a bit higher or the backside screen a bit lower, about the screen, I do not like it is fully articulating, it also makes the camera thicker. There should have been a joystick and a mechanical first curtain shutter. I will keep mine Sony A7RIV and A7RIVA.

    The A7CR would be tempting to me given its lower price point than the A7RV were it not for the fact that the A7CR doesn’t have a joystick for moving the autofocus point. I really rely on the joystick, so I’ll stick with my A7R3 until it falls apart and then look at one of Sony’s full size cameras for an upgrade.

      I also have the A7R3, my first FF digital camera. I absolutely love it. I also have the A7CR along with the a6700. Funny things is I think the a6700 is the best compact camera Sony made. It has an excellent feel, grip, a better EVF if you can believe, the AI chip and IBIS. Also takes excellent photos. I would like to get the A7R5, but that is a BIG camera compared to the A7R3. But the camera that really surprised me is the ZV-E1. Despite its 12mp sensor, it is simply magical. Don't know why but it is.

      @@bondgabebond4907I can't forgive Sony for making the a6700 1/4000th only. (the mechanical shutter matters a lot, full electronic shutter breaks everything else and has horrible rolling shutter despite what the users say, they're coping)
      if it had 1/8000 or at least 1/6400 it would be simply great... but a6700 is just a video camera with a shutter mechanism.

    I think these cameras make sense when paired with small lenses like Sony's recent 24, 40, or 50mm. They don't make much sense with GM lenses because they are unbalanced.

    I know this comment is a Year after this video but a lot has changed. So I use the Smallrig Baseplate for both A7CR & A7CII and now I do not have to deal with the Front Dial which I want that is not on the A7C and my pinky is not dangling underneath the camera. I also got a thumb grip which helps in handling the ergonomics of the small devices better. Imagine the Carl Zeiss Sonnar FE 30mm f/2.8 ZA T Lens or Viltrox or Tamron 20mm Lenses or even the Sony G 24mm, 40mm and 50mm or even the Nifty Fifty f/1.8 for small portability for the type of photography that you and I do. I also have the A7RV and love it. Waiting for the A1 II if it is coming. I have been doing a little 6K but hardly any 8k. It would be something if Sony starts another trend and the camera can do video formats HD, 4K, 6K & 8K. Cheers!

    I shoot for pleasure,(not professional), and just bought my first full frame camera (the fantastic A7 iv) after 20 yrs in the point and shoot world. I am still in the return window for my A7 iv and was really liking the A7c as it was cheaper and perhaps all I needed…But now I really really really like the A7C ii which is still cheaper than the A7iv and has enhancements. I like the idea of the smaller size, the new touch menus with icons, and the enhanced IBIS of the A7C ii, (7 stops A7C ii vs 5.5 A7 iv for stabilized lenses). Does the IBIS on the A7C ii make a difference in recording video hand held in real world shooting? Separately, I appreciate what you said last at 15:05 (don’t just fall for the marketing, think about what yu are limited on with your current camera, save your money for a better lens, take a course, etc)…Get out and shoot, do something different and try something new.

      @@kevinfernandez2269 thanks for the reply, but I’m thinking about trying to get the A7C ii not another A7 iv! Still, Best Buy here in the United States would charge me a 15% restocking fee (~$400) if I were to return the camera like that, so for where I am now I wouldn’t benefit from returning my A7 iv and getting a used one from MPB. Also, the A7 iv was a hefty investment for me, so I got the $175 warranty/insurance from Best buy. If I do a one for one trade on price (A7C ii) or buy something a little more expensive I’d keep the warranty and Best Buy would waive the restocking fee.

    You get a compact cam to rig it up for filming and still be able to grab it for the next family hangout. a7IV bulky EVF is useless for rigged up filming - cages get complicated and bulky. On a sidenote, midplaced EVFs are the only leftover from DSLR days, and maybe it's time to move them to the left. There is no reason at all to place EVFs in the middle. Results in aweful ergonomics. That said resoluition could be better - on the EVF and screen.

      I have an a7III and the only reason the a7C line is appealing to me is because I want a smaller full frame camera for personal and travel use. The tech is improved, but there is nothing wrong with the a7III, and it can be used until it wears out in my opinion. It all depends on what you shoot, what your personal needs are and what you like. I think handling a camera before purchase at a local camera store is the best way to decide if you like it or not. Drawbacks in handling are personal.

      @@diblaze77 Oh totally, ergonomics and handling are a huge thing, and for me, the a7III is perfect in terms of button layout and feel in hand, i prefer it over the a7IV but I have yet to try the a7c. The main reason I'm looking to get an a7cii is because it's an improved and smaller a7IV and in terms of performance, it beats the a7III. my main thing is video work and for that a7cii would work great on gimbals and even handheld. But again, the small size has its drawbacks such as missing buttons and joystick which I both use a LOT on my a7iii, plus the fact that it has only 1 sd slot. • @LaKravenStudios
    @LaKravenStudios Рік тому +1

    I went through this dilemma myself recently... and I ended up buying the A7Cii.
    The A7CR has a higher resolution, but there are negative tradeoffs for someone needing a true Hybrid camera (for video and photo).
    Full disclosure: I already own the A7IV and A7RV, but I required a Hybrid Body in a Compact form-factor that I can quickly switch between photo shooting and integrating into a cinema rig.
    The A7Cii does (as you've said) have a lower overall quality EVF and integrated touch screen, but when I'm shooting video, I use my own EVF and my own monitor (depending on whether I'm shooting from the hip, or shooting from the shoulder, or shooting on a gimbal).
    As you also said, the camera doesn't matter nearly as much as your knowledge and skills, followed by the glass you put in front of it.
    Where the camera body matters more in that "ratio" is when shooting video... and when it comes to low light video performance, I've found that the A7Cii is clearly (and noticeably) better than the A7CR.
    These Compact bodies are also far better when it comes to incorporating them into the heart of a modular cinema rig system. They're better than the A7IV and the A7RV (which are both, overall, better camera bodies for photography given their superior integrated monitors and EVF units).
    For my growing love of street photography, I'm currently challenging myself to use the A7Cii as my primary, but I will confess I'm still carrying either the A7IV or the A7RV with me (with a second focal length on it).
    Why do I need a compact body? Well, I have to climb mountains with my gear... and my gear includes at least 2 separate drones (usually a Mavic 3 Cine and either a Cinewhoop or an FPV) and both weight and size really matter. Carrying an A7IV and A7RV (for A and B units) not only takes up a significant amount more room in my pack, it adds a noticeable amount of weight.
    If, however, you're going single body, or looking for a secondary (B) camera, or you don't have to sherpa your gear 20-30km in a day on foot... buy a full-sized body. As you said, Pierre, nobody really NEEDS the AI Autofocus (though it can be quite good, I won't deny)... so everyone should prioritise what matters more to them.

    • @LaKravenStudios
      @LaKravenStudios Рік тому +1

      @@magnusasmussen9452 I'll answer both of your questions here.
      The A7Cii has a wider native ISO range than the A7CR, and for low light with f/2.8 lenses, it's actually possible to exceed the maximum native ISO of the A7CR, but I've never had a situation where I need to exceed the native max ISO of the A7Cii in any low light scenario.
      For this reason, I can say confidently that the A7Cii outperforms the A7CR in low light shooting (photo AND video)
      For reference, the native ISO range for the A7Cii is 100-51,200 where the A7CR is 100-32,000
      When you go into expanded ISO ranges, the image can quickly become so noisy that no amount of careful (or AI assisted) noise reduction will save you.
      In terms of video, the A7CR supports full-frame 4K 60fps shooting, while the A7Cii only supports 4K 60fps in APS-C (crop) mode. If you're only shooting in ideal lighting, and shooting 60fps 4K without cropping matters to you, the A7CR would be the better choice there.
      It's an unfortunate compromise, but since I shoot photos and videos often in low light conditions, the A7Cii is the better overall choice for me.

    I currently have a a7iii I love this camera but sometimes I wish I had a smaller setup for light travel, I know the body size is not much different, pretty much the top view finder... but for my small setup, I'd like to go light on lenses too, as my 24-70 sigma art is a brick and a half to carry, plus it's quite intimidating to walk around tanking photos on the street. So my idea is A7CR 24mm 2.5 lens and 40mm 2.5 lens. Which here in Australia I can get this setup for the same price as the A7Rv, this way I can use both lenses in crop mode if I need to and it should give me about the same coverage as my 24-70 and still get 30mpix photos out of it. Yes it's not exactly the same as the 24-70, but definitely a lot lighter kit. I'm not fussed about 2 card slots as on my a7iii I only ever use 1. Yes view finder might be annoying a bit but I'm sure I'll get used to it. I'll still keep the a7iii... but definitely would be nice to have more resolution on a smaller body.

      I am in a similar position, but ultimately can’t find a compelling enough reason to do the switch. You are getting a smaller form factor in the A 7C ii but giving up a higher resolution EVF, loosing a more ergonomic hand grip, and getting worse battery life. Also, you’re losing customizable buttons, (4 vs 2), and no autofocus/ zoom in joystick. I thought the size difference would be significant but I think more is made of this than what it actually is, (not a big difference). I actually appreciate the bigger A7 iv because of the better EVF, buttons, & ergonomic handgrip, both things the A7C models make compromises on. The better AI and auto focus seems like it would be an improvement, but the A7 iv is already getting an A+ in this category and I don’t think the A7C II’s improvement would translate into anything more than a marginal upgrade in real world shooting. For me, I’d have to pay a 15% restocking fee to Best Buy to do the trade, and while I’d like to have the latest and greatest I’m not seeing how after doing all that horsing around I would ultimately be happier, but good luck I see exactly why you might switch to the A7C ii.

    You make some excellent points. I think these "C" cameras are targeted at customers like me: I'm not a professional photographer, just a hobbyist photographer looking for a camera that is light and flexible enough, for photo & video, to take just about anywhere. The full frame sensor, autofocus capabilities, and other features give me more than what a cell phone camera could. Also, I'm not looking for dual card slots, and the EVF is good enough for the times when I do need it (certainly there are times). I had a 6700 and enjoyed it so-so, but the A7C made photography fun for me, in a whole different way, without feeling limited to ASPC or overburdened by a heavier camera, that starts feeling like carrying a burden if you're not a pro photographer. I haven't loved a camera as much as the A7C since I can remember. The A7C II addresses a number of "wish to haves" compared to the A7C enough to becomes a good birthday present for me this year 😅🎉 It's a camera that makes me want to go out and take pictures and videos in a way that no other camera has for me. And finally, are people missing the genius of Sony for making this camera good enough for use with lenses designed for ASPC, knowing it has a dedicated ASPC mode? It makes me wish I hadn't sold all my ASPC lenses years ago.

    08:33 You complain about the viewfinder hurting your eye. The A7C series cameras have been designed around the A6xxx-series bodies, with the smaller, off-set viewfinder. The A6xxx cameras come with the eyecup that you mount on the viewfinder. Just like an eyecup for full-size A7-series cameras it's a soft, rubber-like extension that shields the side angles from stray light, increasing contrast, and providing cushioning for your eye socket. It's an somewhat basic, and for the APS-C bodies, standard Sony-made accessory. Yet you don't mention it. Want ultimate comfort for EVF? Get it. Easy. I suppose either Sony didn't bother to provide it for test units or they just saved a few bucks and decided not to ship it with the C series production units altogether.
    Your point is not valid. It's as if you removed eyecup from an A7 full size camera and complained it's hard on your eye socket. It sure is, cause you're not using the eyecup. You have the basis to complain about Sony not providing the eyecup in the box, sure. But not about the camera design itself, as it has actually been built with the eyecup in mind, just for some business reasons they refused to include it.
    I'm surprised by your lack of conscientiousness about the A6xxx series that's been on the market for years and is widely used. If you were familiar with it, you wouldn't have put forward that point in such way.
