My first hunting rifle was a 1936 Marlin model 36 30 30 that my grandfather bought new from the Sears catalog "the way Americans are supposed to be able to buy firearms" shipped to his door. I still have it. It's still a great hunting rifle here in the forests of the northern midwest United States. Also had the model 60 22lr which my son has now. I've always loved Marlin. When I was a young boy I remember the 2 big bore calibers my dad talked about were the 45 70 government and the 375H&H.
I love stories like this, because while I'm reading it I imagine my friends saying something like "30-30 isn't good for deer" or something like that. 30-30 has been killing deer for decades and as long as there's people like you that appreciate rifles like that it will continue to kill deer for decades to come. I don't think I'll ever own a 30-30 or .45-70 because I just don't care for lever rifles, I'm a bolt or semi auto kinda guy I guess. But I still appreciate them for what they are and what they've accomplished. They're beautiful rifles, really.
German hunter here. I ordered a Trapper last year in Oktober and got it about three weeks ago. Sucessfully hunted down two hogs with around 50 kg each. The rifle is perfect for using in the thick bushes because it's short and handy. It is made in a great quality so thank you Ruger for bringing back such an iconic rifle.l
I was stationed in Germany in the 1990s. Retired Army Infantryman. Spent a lot of time in the woods there. Those big hogs in the German woods are to be given lots of room. Very dangerous, especially at night in packs. I'm from Arkansas. Known for the "Razorbacks". Which is our football team name. As a hunter, I genuinely can say the wild Razorback hogs here in the forests are mixed from hogs from Germany. They get big, they run in packs, and they'll fight as a pack if you hurt one. They are not a creature you mess with without first having a good plan. It may sound crazy but they will methodically retaliate against an attack, almost like bees. Good hunting, my friend.

I shoot the 1895 Guide Gun in.450 Marlin. It’s a beast of a gun, my go to hunting gun. But this trapper is unbelievable, I may be buying one. Thanks for turning me on to it. My favorite bolt is the Ruger M77 30-06. It’s 40 years old and still a tack driver.

Absolutely wonderful gun, and really glad I got it before the decline of the brand, but I have been dying for one of the new ones like yours, post-bankruptcy. Always enjoy your videos. Your videos on the Beretta 1301 gave me a lot of confidence getting that firearm as it was pricey for a scattergun but quickly found out it's worth every penny.
Awesome. I love my Henry 45-70. I've been enjoying your gun and ammo shows for a while. Thank you for showing people that guns can be used safely and are fun to shoot. J.Au-en
Thanks for the great content OG. Congrats on over 100K subs! I think what really helped get the subs up is your concern for Cardboard Americans. Happy New Year stay safe.
Ruger really has stepped up their game with this Marlin acquisition. I have been trying to get a new Marlin since they came out but I always am late to the game.
OG, belated happy New Year. The Ruger trapper 45/70 is a handsome-looking rifle, especially in that finish. Definitely not my 1970s childhood, Weatherby's .22 rimfire. Great video as usual Thank you.
Greg, that is an all-around purfect rife it will get the job done. Nice job, bud. Canada says thanks. 2 hours from Detroit were just getting cool, and now leaves are almost all off the trees, about 35 F outside.
That first shot in the intro… #Mega!!!! OG, very proud with how your channel has come along. Mahalo very much for providing QUALITY!!!! Aloha from your Ohana on Kaua’i💪🏽😀🤙🏽
Ah lever guns. There's just something so wonderful about their sleek lines, history, simplicity, and the tactile feel loading bullets into the side gate or chamber you just can't get from an AR. I got a Henry X .357 just before the pandemic and that took some finagling I tell ya.
I shoot a Marlin 1894 chambered in ..44 Magnum, 20" bbl; manufactured way before the Remington takeover. It is a great lil' carbine, and quite a thumper. I can only imagine the recoil from the 45-70. Congratulations on 100K subscribers! You put together a great program!
@@chipsterb4946 I agree.. same with patterning a 12 gauge shotgun off the bench! Not fun at all!!! I could only handle 12 shots and my cheek felt as if someone punched me in the face! Of course it was a very old firearm with a slim rubber butt pad!
I have the stainless with green laminate stock, paid less than a 1000, it is still unfired to this day and I have seen them going for more than 1800 on Gunbroker.
Great lever action review. That 45-70 is a brute. I don’t know if I want to be on either end, shooting or receiving rounds. Hmm, better to be on shooting end. 😂 Congrats on hitting 100K.
Sorry Nick. I found your address after I filmed the video and didn’t get to re-shoot the segment. I’ll be running a bigger test on your .45-70 ammo along with some others in a video I’m shooting in March, In Kansas with another UA-cam guy. Should be fun. Thanks again!
Love the Marlin 45/70 thank you OG, CON GRATS on the 100G's won't be long I'll be telling my children, I remember when he started this channel! 💪👊💥 Thank you OG, still the best!!
The original .45-70 Govt load for the infantry rifle with a 500 grain bullet over 70 grains of black powder. When the carbine was tested for the cavalry, the load had to be reduced to a 405 grain bullet over 55 grains of black powder due to a 'bit' more recoil. When smokeless powder came on the scene, most ammunition companies standardized on the softer shooting 405 grain bullet at carbine velocities to accommodate older guns & civilian shooters.
I had a Marlin .45-70 guide gun. It had a ported barrel which helped tame the recoil. It was a reliable gun that I regret getting rid of. My son curiously enough has one now. I prefer my Mossberg 12 gauge with slugs 70 caliber holes vs 45 caliber holes. Congratulations on 100,000 subscribers. Stay safe out there.

100k, nicely done! Love your videos and this is no exception. Gotta love the re-release of an old favourite and the 1895 is no exception. I've got a Rem-Marl 1895 GBL which runs really nicely with all sorts of loads. Loving the content OG, keep it up. All the best for you and yours in the new year!
Great video! I have an 1895 Marlin Guide model in 450 Marlin Mag. Usually when you have a jam with a lever action rifle it is from not opening the lever all the way before starting to jack the new round in the chamber. About the same thing as short stroking a pump shotgun. I usually learn things by screwing up, but I still occasionally jam my lever action rifles that way.
I'm mostly an AR guy, but I've been interested in .45-70 lever guns for several years. They seem like a good, practical option for deer hunting in certain areas. And you just can't beat that cool, retro look of a lever action. Congratulations on reaching 100K subscribers.
Good day eh!, just checking your channel out, had to sub, just your way of describing things made me laugh, and back in 2010 I purchased a marlin gbl 45/70, 20" barrel, I put 2 boxes of 305 grain hollow points down the pipe, then my lovely marlins guts fell out,n my both sights fell off, so, back it went, almost soured me from lever actions, but now I own a chiappa wildlands 44 mag, absolutely luvn this 16 " threaded barrel top rail for optics , but it has high visibility front with peep rear, awesome combo, no need for optics, got just over a 2 # trigger, it's my go to rifle now, it works fantastic, shakyjake out.
Excellent video brother! 🎈🥳🎈 I have one and I agree. After 10 to 15 rounds you are done with it. I'm used to shooting 12g 100 rounds in sporting clays without noticing any shoulder pain. The 45-70 is definitely doo-able but a harder hitter for sure. Wherever you took this video in the beginning was beautiful! Wow! Reminds me of here in the Black Hills of SD. Congrats on 101k subs. I hope you had a great Christmas and New Year! Stay safe. The Kook Left knows it has to get everything done this year. It should be scary.
That's a sweet rifle O.G. some of the modern day 45-70 loads are extremely hot compared traditional ammo and that really makes those rifles preform on anything in front of it.. very nice find congrats.. thank you for your service..
Nice lil rifle. I've been slowly planning a possible move to Alaska, and been zeroing on on a little something in .45-70. Seems far more practical against potential threats there, like mad moose/elk, bears etc. Plus being compact enough to carry. I've seem plenty debating the range merits, but for typical "Oh! A bear!" moments, it seems perfect given woodland or brushland engagements are often at relatively short ranges.
Brook, I am an Alaskan bushman & the 45/70 is THE rifle of choice. Especially loaded with hot Buffalo Bore bear thumpers. As an old timer we had to load our own hot loads because the " govt" rounds were junk. 405 grain @ 1300 fps. Buffalo Bore came into existence to fill that need & has blossomed since. My old loads were 420 grain @ 2100 fps & they smacked the snot out of big bears. Buffalo Bore is now loading 430 grain WFN @ 2300 FPS! BUT you will need a maximum magnum kickpad or they WILL hurt you. I'm pretty sure the factory kickpad isn't enough for the bear stoppers. No fun to shoot but better than being mauled.
@@tristantimothy1004 …and you’re familiar with it having already proven itself to you. I like the 45-70, and have both owned and hunted with it. I have also found that other cartridges shooting other bullets at other velocities also works. In the unlikely event of a charge, recoil can be a factor…as well as muzzle lift. If there’s time, we want to be on the same level as the locomotive heading our way, and drive that bullet into the center of the lead engine and exit the caboose. Although if your blacktail falls in the alders on kodiak things get tight and that Trapper Model by Ruger would be ideal…
@@MIDNIGHTSUNALASKA , Ya, I don't go into Alder bear traps. Besides, Alaska law is if a bear claims your kill it's the bears. Only wounded griz I ever lost went into a big alder patch. I didn't get old by being stupid. Shot a standing one at 50 feet with a 220 grain round softnose loaded hot from a 300 win mag right in front of our cabin. I grabbed the WRONG rifle running out the door. Knocked him over & he still ran. Tracked him for miles until he went INTO an Alder maze. Circled it but no exit. Came back the next day & tracked him another mile where he came out the back to a big river where the tracks went into the water. Only bear I ever lost. SHOULD have used the full length 45/70 & broke his spine too on the initial shot. That was a mistake I'll never make again. 300 win square in the sternum wasn't enough gun for a 12 footer. The bears are smart, they lure hunters into tight places where you can hardly move in the Alders & they're laying in wait to ambush you. With their strength they can move through that stuff like water. Screw that! Lotsa bears, just ONE me & my family needs me a lot more than I need any bear. Short bbl rifle sounds good in theory but in there, prob useless. ADD my loads are soooo hot that even with a super mag kickpad even the full length Bbls still knock the snot out of you. 430 grain WFNHC @ 2300 FPS. OUCH!! I've got the shorter bbl Henry ( 18 inch) & it kicks like 2 mules & a horse but I'm staying with the 21 inch bbl Marlin. I've got flip up ramp sights & good out to 800. ( Moose size targets) Here in the thickly wooded interior most shots are 200 or less & the sights folded flat are good enough for that. I've taken plenty of bears w that and never needed a 2nd shot. Got attacked by a 10 ft blackie out in the swamp. Hit him square in the sternum @ 100 yards & dropped him like a brick at full charge. Found the slug just under the rear flank fur. Total energy transfer INTO that beast. 1st griz attack was at 10 feet with a 375 H&H, 300 grain Barnes X. Uphill attack. I didn't know the get down on one knee trick yet & overshot him. Hit the spine right behind his head & took out 3 vertibrea & blew a hole clean through him. Slug exited just above his boy part & blew his entire gutpack to jello. Only flipped him over & he STILL ran 150 yards away into a small lake & swam halfway across before finally dying. My friends at F&G said it was sheer adrenalin & muscle memory that kept him going & I was lucky it was a very steep hill he was charging up. Sold that useless 375 & got my 1st 45/70. Been knocking em down since & that was 36 years ago. Love the 45/70!!

@@MIDNIGHTSUNALASKA , Similar story. Came for a visit, got hooked & returned permanently 7 years later. Ran a bait station for 27 years. THAT drew in tons of bears & multiple generations came. Station was only 1/4 mile from our cabin before the laws changed. Being followed home was normal. Our normal local grizzlies we're no problem. They knew us, we knew them & since we built our cabin right in the middle of THEIR major game trail daily pass through visits were pretty normal. One sow came through daily for decades w her cubs. I put a friend up in the stand & told him do NOT come down until I was there w him. She brought her cubs & slept under the stand all night. We didn't have cell phones back then so the next day when Danny didn't show up for breakfast I went looking. He was asleep on the roof of the stand. Boots ( bears name) had left before I got there & found him asleep up there. He wasn't about to come down w her/ cubs below him. Next day he got 2 of his 3 allowed & went back to Wasilla. Shot 1, and when I heard the shot I started walking out & heard the second shot in transit. ( On foot) When I got there a few mins later he was grinning from ear to ear w 2 dead bears down. 1st Hunt of a lifetime for him. I had lots of friends in that stand. We had so many bears around getting rid of all we could was necessary. After killing that BIG blackie I never shot another big one. Left thoes for my friends. We took our 3 smaller, tastier bears for winter meat. Processing that big SOB by myself was a job I never wanted to repeat. I think he was at least 800+ pounds. 11 inch wide front paws. His " death roar" when he initially saw me & charged was truly terrifying. That was the summer after my 1st grizzly attack & the 375 fiasco. HAD the 45/70 by then. I've been attacked 5 times in my 38 years out here. Not bad for 1000s of encounters over the decades. Good life! That area got too developed so we moved further north. New area only has a few bears about but 1 blackie is huge. Saw him crossing the dirt road leading out here & his back was level w our vans hood. By the time I stopped & jumped out he was GONE into the thick stuff & I wasn't about to go in after him. Too thick. 4 foot fern walls, too easy for an ambush & the big blackies scare me. Natural ambush hunter man-eaters. He killed a moose near here in a neighbor's yard. ( Weekenders up rarely) Ate the whole damned moose by himself in a week. BIG 11 inch wide front paw prints. Spooky!!
Happy New Year ya old flatfoot. It's always a pleasure to see you. We have a Winchester 1894 AE and M73 limited competition short stroke and one Marlin 336 30-30. The Marlin has a better grip. The Winnies are easier to carry around. Glad you like yours.
During the lockdown, I told my buddy that I wanted a lever-action rifle. Almost immediately, I started seeing lever-action vids popping up every day on UA-cam. During that time, I had decided that the Ruger Marlin was the one I'd get, and this vid helped seal my decision. Thanks for such an informative and detailed run down. Subbed.

Maybe Ruger will come out with a 1894 Trapper in 357 :D Great shooting , and great review ! Love me some Gem state ! .. gubs
Don't kid yourself. Length does matter ESPECIALLY with hot loads. The shorter Bbls will kick ones butt with the hot bear thumpers. Super magnum kickpads are a must too w the hotter loads. The standard factory ones just don't cut it. The " Govt" loads are the LEAST powerful of available loadings. Still enough to go through a horse & kill the one behind it thou.
OG, really liked your descriptions of the gun and the ammo as well as it's range. However, I understand that the Trapper is an all-weather rifle but, when you filmed it in the water...dude, you're killing me!! :~) It's a beautiful gun and, if I can find one, gonna get one. Thanks!!
Congratulations on 100k Gregg! We obviously love you! I have always shied away from 45-70 due to its violent reputation with recoil, however, I love my shotguns so, who knows! Great video as always!
Jeff, with a triple magnum kickpad most can handle the recoil. I left mine full sized for the maximum pressure spread & the grizzlies don't give a rip about apperrance. We shoot really HOT bear loads up here & you need the FAST firepower ESPECIALLY in a multiple bear attack. AND, This is one rifle you NEVER shoot laying down or it will hurt you. Even sitting is rough. Gotta be able to let the rifles recoil push you backwards.
@@jeffslaven , Had a friend who got a new one w that stupid hard plastic butt plate. I warned him NOT to shoot my bear loads until he put a magnum kickpad on it. 300 lb Bill didn't listen. Spent the rest of the summer in an armsling, tore out his collarbone 1st shot. These bear loads are almost 458 power. 3-4 practice rounds & I'm done for the day. NOT fun to shoot but better than being bear mauled. And, I'm just a lil guy. Was 5'9" & 140 lbs. Bill figured his mass could handle it w/o the kickpad. He was WRONG. I have the super magnum kickpads on our bear shotguns too. Even my smaller wife can handle a few of those. She tried the 45/70 w regular Govt loads, no problem. Also wanted to try my hot bear loads. 1st shot spun her, so she figured she'd try holding the rifle a lil way away from her shoulder instead of holding it in tight like I showed her. 2nd shot not only spun her but knocked her down & the rifle went flying. Got pictures of her bruised & black/blue all about the shoulder area. But no real damage except to her ego & a bruised butt where she fell on it. She prefers her semi auto 12 guage slug shotgun. Kicks less. What I DO know from experience is that when the bear charges ones adrenalin dumps instantly & you never hear the blast or feel the recoil until AFTER the grizzlies down & your not. Doesn't matter then. Skinning & butchering time. 😀😀 I've never needed more than 1 shot to flatten em either but it's comforting to know you got em if you need em. W me, rechambering is automatic. It's amazing what one can do when your scared silly.

Congrats on the 101K subs. I had one of those Marlins years ago, and that thing would kick you into next week. Long bench sessions are definitely out. Enjoy your channel. Best in the new year.
😁👍That 45-70 marlin is in my list of must have rifles. My first rifle as a kid was a marlin 22 bolt action. Made many a trip to the woods with it. 😁
Always enjoy your videos. Your videos on the Beretta 1301 gave me a lot of confidence getting that firearm as it was pricey for a scattergun but quickly found out it's worth every penny.
That vid is an OG classic!
They are truly the oppressed. Thanks for watching!
Congratulations OG! What a milestone, what a journey! Fantastic review on the Trapper.
Thanks George! I was inspired by your comparison video. Stay safe down there.
Ruger really has stepped up their game with this Marlin acquisition. I have been trying to get a new Marlin since they came out but I always am late to the game.
Cowboys & Indians us old guys all played levergun fun. I especially love the fireball coming out the 💊 end on a 16" mini cannon.
Great video! Love seeing different guns. AR's are great, but after awhile if you've seen one you've seen them all.
That land is beautiful 😻 we love you and Jeff 💖 keep up the good work Ty 👍 just fighting the algorithm for you..
I WISH I HAD MONEY TO GIVE
Congrats on hitting your 100K milestone Gregg!! WELL deserved.
Thanks for watching. I’ve been in your area when driving from Detroit to Niagara. Beautiful country up there.
That first shot in the intro… #Mega!!!! OG, very proud with how your channel has come along. Mahalo very much for providing QUALITY!!!! Aloha from your Ohana on Kaua’i💪🏽😀🤙🏽
Thanks Richie!
Ah lever guns. There's just something so wonderful about their sleek lines, history, simplicity, and the tactile feel loading bullets into the side gate or chamber you just can't get from an AR. I got a Henry X .357 just before the pandemic and that took some finagling I tell ya.
Ha! I get that same feeling when I load my 44 mag.
Thank you, sir. Stay safe out there.
I love my early 1970s Marlin 1894 chambered in 44 Magnum!
Congrats on hitting 100K.
OG I'm from Tennessee. Great show as always. Those short 45-70 lever guns are great. I love my 1895GS. That's some beautiful country you're in there.
Sorry Nick. I found your address after I filmed the video and didn’t get to re-shoot the segment. I’ll be running a bigger test on your .45-70 ammo along with some others in a video I’m shooting in March, In Kansas with another UA-cam guy. Should be fun. Thanks again!

Thanks Dewey!
Great work OG! We need more people like you around, we would have gun smarts & saftey!
Thanks for watching. 🤟😎
The 45-70 was actually almost dead for a while, so Marlin came out with the .444 to cover that void for a while.
owned and loved the 444 marlins
Got both. The new Ruger is for deep pockets. Got 2 orginal Marlin 95 in .45-70. Browning copy of the 1886. Winchester. 444. LOVE EM
@@lonniemonroe2714 not really my ruger marlin SBL ( I just bought last week) was 1371 with taxes brand new in the box so that's not such a deep pocket, granted I have a job that pays me $19 an hour so it cost me prolly 3 weeks pay.
Nice rifle. Good solid round. Very witty OG as always and happy days on this video. OG speaks the truth so listen to him.

Thanks for checking it out! 🤟😎
They make good conversation pieces
Good to see you are still doing good. That is a fine rifle you have there and look forward to more OG shenanigans.
I have one and I agree.

@@OGsDangerShow - Please let me know and we'll hit TxRdHs for a bite. I'll give you the tour of Rapid.

Spooky!!
OG, youre too much brotha! The thin blue line needs more like you to make America proud again. Keep em coming.
Happy New Year ya old flatfoot. It's always a pleasure to see you. We have a Winchester 1894 AE and M73 limited competition short stroke and one Marlin 336 30-30. The Marlin has a better grip. The Winnies are easier to carry around. Glad you like yours.

Its not the length of your...um...rifle, its the size of the load!! Congrats on 100K!! Well deserved. Great editing as usual!
Thanks Bill. Say hi to Lori and y’all stay safe out there.
There's Me thinking it was the length of Your pull that mattered .
THAT is a serious commanding view OG. What a pad 👍. More great guns too
It is always fun watching you, OG. Blessings from Australia.

Congratulations on 100k Gregg! We obviously love you! I have always shied away from 45-70 due to its violent reputation with recoil, however, I love my shotguns so, who knows! Great video as always!
They are not that bad.
@@tristantimothy1004 Thank you for this knowledge!
My step father had a Ruger No. 1 in .458 Winchester Magnum. I enjoyed shooting it.
I'm looking forward to getting my first 45-70.
