    I think having the second set-up but with the toilet access from the bathroom rather than the hallway would make more sense. That way you can have a separate toilet but still access it directly from the bathroom instead of running all the way around the block.

      Or … have 2 doors to the toilet room so either is an option. If someone is having a bath and the kids need an extra toilet for some reason they can enter from the hallway.

    A quick tip about your dressing room. Some years ago, I put a small ironing board in my walk-in closet, and it is so handy for quick touch ups, instead of taking the garment all the way through the house to the laundry room to iron a bit. =)

      24 years ago, we incorporated a wall mounted/hinged, drop down, small ironing board in our walk-in closet and never regretted it for a second. My Dad, who was a skilled carpenter, made it in an hour or so. He even put a hinged drop-down leg at the pointy end which folds flat as you lift it back against the wall, to give more support to the cantilevered end. There's a power point and shelf for the iron right next to it - and our daughter has used it frequently too. Best thing ever!!

    In my opinion, it‘s annoying if you have to go to two different rooms if you wanna go to the loo before you shower for example. Especially as both the bathroom and the toilet are not connected. I‘d prefer a version in whoch the toilet is seperate but still accessible from the bathroom 🙂

    If you enclose the toilet, make the door open to the bathroom instead of to the hallway, this way you don’t need to go out of the room to use it. And use a Japanese style toilet, that’s 2 in 1 and it will save you space.

    I really like option B with one change. Put the toilet room access door in the bathing room instead of the hall. You could also eliminate the sink and just make it what we in the USA call a water closet. Think about the efficiency of a morning routine. Using the toilt, brushing your teeth, showing, getting dresses, putting on make up or shaving your beard. You would limit the number of steps just by moving a door to a different wall.

    You could close off the hall door. Keep both side doors. Then put a multi head walk-in shower across the whole wall. Keeping the Bidet and toilet next to the window the tub in front of the other window. You'd still have doors into the closet from the bathroom and the hallway. Never underestimate the advantages to having a bigger shower. You can have a bench and room for two to shower at the same time. Not to be too crass.

In that way, those who already bought it and finished it can buy a refill that is lighter to transport (that means the prices of shipping go down). I'm American and I love using a bidet. They have always been a bit rare here the States, usually only found in finer homes.
    I became familiar with them when living in France. I've always considered them to be quintessentially French.
    From my experience, the French were not as obsessed with daily showers as Americans.
    We routinely scrub off our own natural oils only to slather on toxic "moisturizers" in their place.
    The French told me they were for "foot washing." I soon realized that wasn't really their primary purpose.
    A bidet allows users a level of personal sanitation and cleanliness throughout the day without taking a full on shower or bath. I vote for a bidet in your new bath.👍👍

  • @VictoriaLPhelps
    @VictoriaLPhelps 10 місяців тому +16

    I'm studying interior design right now, and my suggestion would be to use the second layout. Especially because you don't want the toilet to be in view by the window. But you don't need another sink in the tiolet room. So just put a toilet behind the wall. You could then add a sliding door on both sides the the room with the tiolet. This way you can access the toilet without going "out of the shower/bathroom".

    I love the open plan it is more comfortable. Here in the US we do not use the separate water closet setup for the master bedroom. Here that setup is called a half bathroom normally it is in the us first floor homes so visitors can use while visiting us for the day. But for a master bathroom I think to have it all opened will be more modern and you both are great to bring vintage together with modern so beautifully. As for the bidet it is not very common but the Italian Americans do have bidet, it came in handy when Covid was here and toilet paper shortage also will save on septic clean out will be quicker clean out with flushing toilet paper. Both plans are great but my option would be for the open plan. Love it!!!!! I think the room should be for you two you deserve to enjoy the chateau and all the work you did.

    Years ago, before they passed away, and like your father, wanted to be busy, and it was amazing all the things it would get accomplished during your visit, and yet we have plenty of time for relaxation and dining together, and the grandchildren’s attention /playtime. I miss them terribly.
    Regarding the new bathroom layout… I like the idea of being able to shower and go directly into the dressing room. To me, that would be a very handy feature. Also, there are so many wonderful spray fragrances for bathrooms to neutralize odors that you don’t have to close off privacy for a couple using that room whether it be you guys or a guest and it’s a lot of extra expense and work, to put up all of those walls just for some privacy that is really not necessary, in my opinion. Here in America, we do a lot of open concepts and en suites, where master bedrooms are concerned… no walls and they are so beautiful & full of great lighting …..We always choose the large dressing room that is w/ a walk-in closet.😊❣️ I wish you the best as you venture into this new journey, and I am very certain it will be lovely when you’re done❣️❣️ Enjoy your parents for the time you have with them as it is most precious.♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️

    I would go for a separate toilet cubicle but if you could access it from the bathroom too that would be great. Imagine what you would do upon getting up in the morning, toilet then shower so you would have to walk back through the bedroom if it was totally separate. I am amazed what bathroom designers can do to fit things in. Eg a wet room and toilet room which measured 140 cm x 90 cm so yo have acres by comparison. Can’t wait to see it

    If it's going to be your bedroom, prioritise how you would like it. Also, there aren't going to be many guests who bring enough stuff to fill a dressing room, but you will definitely enjoy having that much space! On the bathroom, I think it's nice to have access to the dressing room through the bathroom but slightly annoying having a separate toilet. Could you have it open planned but with two doors?!

    I think the space is large enough to do the toilet and bath separated.
    But I would put some sort of window (Maybe at the top) to let a bit of light in the toilet.

    Looking amazing! Consider that people would be unlikely to use the toilet when someone is in the shower if you close off the toilet with the shower. Maybe you would consider in the open plan to move the sinks towards the window... better light for makeup, etc. and toilets and bidet on the left side of the door where you had planned the sinks. The toilet/bidet could be in its own closed room... which could allow someone the ability to use the toilet when someone is in the tub or using other amenities in the bathroom. Super loving all that you're creating!!!

    Maybe adding a half wall instead of a whole room to close off the toilet can still keep an 'openness' to the bathroom. You can build the shower and circle a mid-wall with maybe some glass to separate the toilet and still allow other parts of the bathroom to be in use.

    In Canada, a powder room is useful. I suggest keep the access to a separate toilet / sink..access from hall. And add a toilet in principal bedroom-suite, add the bidet/toilet in one fixture. That way you retain future flexibility to rent the suite for B&B ..guest house or weddings etc etc….
    Then your suite can be a retreat in the full sense, no matter how it will be used in the future. Enjoy the process and I’m looking forward to how the rooms come into fruition.

  • @bernardkealey6449
    @bernardkealey6449 10 місяців тому +4

    My preference is option A; I understand the desire for separate toilet, but if you “have” to do that, as others have mentioned, keep the access internal to the suite. Especially if there’s a chance this will become a revenue room in the future.
    Strong recommendation; consider maximising the shower space and creating a steam shower, aka mini hammam. They work just like a normal shower, but hit the button and you get the full steam bath experience for those times when a bath is not enough… It does mean enclosing at the top (and obviously not to the ceiling!) and possibly mechanical ventilation, but you’d never regret it. Again, if in the future you’re considering this to be a guest room, it’s an extra selling point.

  • @MsCookiemonster0
    @MsCookiemonster0 10 місяців тому +2

    My thoughts. Option 1 is my preference. I wouldn't want to be using a seperate toilet only to have to go around the corner to use the bathroom. Nothing more luxurious than using a lovely big bathroom with everything you need at hand. I would make a shower for two. Put the toilet and bidet on the same wall as the shower, and put the bath on the other side of the room where you are going to put the sink and toilet. It gives the bath the whole wall and would make the bathroom look bigger. If you put the bath on the same side as the shower it could look crammed in and cluttered on that wall and make the bathroom look heavy on one side. Then put the sink between the two windows.
    You guys have great taste. I am sure whatever you do it will look amazing.

    I'm with Anna on this one, but that's just personal preference. I like having natural light coming into a bathroom, which wouldn't be the case for a seperate toiletroom. Also regarding a bidet (I googled the function and funnly found out it was named in france), you could just buy a toilet with the function of a bidet built into it to safe space, since having a bidet means also that you have to use it regualary to keep the pipes clean/hindering bacteria to grow - if I remember correctly - while with an included bidet function you have the choice of using it or not, without that pipe problem :)

    The second option makes the most sense for many reasons. Especially if you are creating a dressing room off of the bathroom. This will work for a number of reasons.
    1) Yes you want the toilet separate from the bathing spaces
    2) the layout creates a better flow from the bedroom to the dressing room
    3) creates privacy for getting dressed AND creates greater privacy when getting dressed for a suite IF you are selling the space for renting OR living in it as a master suite for your family.

    I like some things about each layout. A bidet and toilet can be 1 unit; a bidet is something I would leave in the plan but it doesn’t need to take up so much room. I also like the idea of a closed off toilet, but it is hard to visualize how small it might make the room feel ( Anna’s point).My grandparents bathroom was cut in half and it worked very well and your space seems bigger …. From the hallway you came into a double sink on one side and a vanity on the other side. You went through a second door for the toilet and tub/shower combo. Second half had the window and natural light allowing smells and steam to naturally escape. As it was the only bathroom in the house it really worked well to share the space, yet still provide privacy.
    Your view from the tub is 100% perfect! I also liked the double sink close to the natural light and view. I am wondering if you need a third sink with the toilet? Deleting that may help that section with the toilet from feeling like an airplane bathroom. Why can’t you wash your hands where the double sink is? I also liked the flow between rooms in the second plan. I would ensure there was a door you could close (vs just a walkway) between the bedroom and bathroom, so that if someone is sleeping the person getting ready doesn’t disturb the person sleeping (lights and sounds). Even if the door is usually left open it allows for the option of closing it when necessary.
    Idea? Before putting up a wall t block off the toilet put something temporary so you can see how if feels. Last ….I am wondering if there is any natural light in the dressing room. If not I would add a vanity with the double sinks for Anna to put makeup on ….another reason I like that to be close to the window. I can picture Phillip soaking in the sunset from the bath while Anna sits and enjoys the view (sunset) while she does an evening skin routine or facial mask.
    I know whatever you do it will be beautiful and functional even if you change your mind after you start. I love that you are willing to make changes until it is perfect for you even if it is more work.

    I think your Dad in particular is a natural UA-camr, Anna lol. It’s heartwarming to see your whole family working together. Quite the memories being made. Excited to see this project unfold. Hope that wild boar situation is under some semblance of control now. What a load of frustrating work! They have integrated bidet’s for toilets now. Don’t think you need a whole separate one now. Might as well save the floor space and additional plumbing. I prefer plan 1. We have a bathroom /bedroom / walk in closet situation with too many doors (I don’t even think I can explain it …) and it is such an aggravation. And a complete waste of precious wall and floor space. It’s not worth it and won’t be anywhere near as convenient as you may think it would be. It’s one of the projects on our list to rectify when we can. The few extra steps to walk out of the bedroom to the bathroom directly next to our room would be well worth it to not have the constant headache of doors being in the way. I don’t know the plumbing situation and how difficult different configurations would be, but you could create a small toilet/bidet room where you plan to have the shower and place the shower directly across from where you want the tub on the wall with the sinks. You could create a “wet room” style shower instead of a fully enclosed one so you don’t lose any of the light. That way the enclosed toilet is directly by the door into the washroom but the rest of the room remains open.

    Like the previous comment said, instead having the door enter the bathroom from the hall, it would be best to have it on the inside to access the toilet and then just get rid of the second sink. On the other hand, if you want an open space, I think a half wall with glass between the shower and tub would be good too. In addition, a built in shower seat/bench would be nice for the elderly or someone who hurt their leg. (Just a thought on who will use it. You don't necessarily need this, but it can also be used as a counter to place shampoo and all the like on it as well.)

  • @itissocolourful

    I agree with those saying option 2 with the door facing the bathroom side instead. Not only because it feels very appropriate in a old historic home, but because this allows for more than one person to be using the bathroom at the same time while still having privacy. And maybe it's just the germaphobe in me but I do think having a sink in the water closet is nice to have just for hygienic purposes, unless you always want to be disinfecting that door handle lol. BUT maybe just a little baby sink. Love your content! Been watching for a long time and you have me checking real estate listings overseas (that I will likely never buy) on the regular. :)

Bidets are not only for butt washing, so a lot more useful that the toto toilet or butt sprays( I live in Japan but I like bidets a lot more) and bidets wash better and faster as well.

    I live in the US and have a bidet. These are the new kinds where they attach to the existing toilet and can either spray heated or regular tap water. I'd never want to go back to not having one.
