I think I realized that in Castlevania with the Medusa heads where you have to use the holy water before you're jumping across gaps to get them right in front of you.
I think the attitude of the programmers of the older games was like, Oh, you didn't know you were supposed to use your special items to get through that stage. You're fucked.
@Big Ole Words, I don't mind you bad mouthing Battle of Olympus for my pic, I was a favourite as it was one of the few one player games I could have, not only that the Greek Mythology style and LOZ 2 type of game it was, I agree with you on LOZ 2 being a great game!
I can only assume I grabbed this game as a kid because there was a dragon on the cover (I am a man of simple tastes), but I loved it! It was always a good playthrough, probably because of how much loved the character design.
I never played this as a kid, but much more recently I picked up a copy and was actually surprised at how much I enjoyed playing it. Now I wish I had come across this game earlier. Great game review, as always!
@mattsweeney3790 It's all good. You're right, that hardly anyone I know played it, besides me and my cousins. So, it would indeed be a good entry to review someday.
1:43 Yes! I love the color palettes in these games. 9:15 excellent commentary, James. It's easy to overlook all that attention to detail while playing the game. Aicom's games are gorgeous and I'd love to watch a comprehensive video survey about their NES/Famicom titles. Natsume too.
Astyanax and Faxanadu were SUPER hype for me as a kid. Have had the music for the first stage stuck in my head for so long, along with the boss music ( only two I remember off the top of my head all these years ).
Got excited when i heard you mention this one on a stream recently, it was one of the NES games i remember owning and actually being able to finish as a kid and i absolutely loved it and it's awesome you gave it some love James, always love to see a new video drop.
When I was a kid I'd stare at the sun and watch it slowly move. It's baffling that I still don't need glasses, but I never had a cougar set me up with a fairy.
I remember getting this one from a convenience store with a small spinner rack of rentals when I was a kid. I loved the gory dark fantasy trappings trappings of the game and how it's completely inverse from the goofy cover art.
This is one of my favorite NES games. The sprites look great and the music is amazing for a game like this. Very unappreciated game in my opinion. It's also very fun and easy if you learn how the game works. I even named my town in Animal Crossing after the kingdom in this game, Remlia.
I had this game. Secret codes: Continue A, B, Select, Start (when you get game over) Demo Select Up, Up, Up, Down, Down, Down, A, B, Start (on title screen) Invincibility Up (4x), Down, Left, Right, Up, Start (on title screen) Level Select Up, Down, Left, Right, B (4x), Start (on title screen) Sound Test Up, Down, Right, Left, Up, Down, Right, Left, Start (on title screen) View Ending & Credits B, B, A, A, B, A, Up, Down, Start (on Demo Select menu)
I owned and liked this game as a kid, but could never really get through the last stages without the invincibility code. I never took advantage of magic spells, however, so I should go back and give that time-stopper spell a try. The sword power-up mechanic is identical to Legendary Axe on TG-16, by the way. And for those who are interested, this is the code for invulnerability: at the title screen: UP, UP, UP, UP, DOWN, LEFT, RIGHT, UP, START.
I remember playing this with a mate of mine back in highschool one sunday arvo. I loved how the lion and eagle boss would morph into a gryphon. The lovecraftian enemies are somewhat appropriate considering these games were inspired by Conan the barbarian, though nobody seemed to want to pay for the license. But Conan was set in the Lovecraftian universe because Robert Howard and H. P. Lovecraft were good friends.
This is one of those games I wish I had as a kid, but am glad I discovered as an adult. I've always been a huge sucker for sword & sorcery and this game has that in spades. It's no Zelda 2 or Faxanadu, but it's still an excellent game with amazing presentation.
Great video! Lol for years ive been saying the name wrong, id pronounce it ass-ta-nax. Thinking on it now my fam was poor and i needed glasses, lol. Btw, at the end when you present your art with a genuine smile it reminds me of my kid brother who died 6 months ago, so just know that doing what you do brings a smile to peoples faces.
I loved this game as a kid! The boss fights were dope. I remember when I first got the game and put it in my NES, I was just like, "Whaaaat?" The in-game design was so very different from what I was expecting from the cover art. In a good way... I think.
this was one of my favorites! kinda dug the music in it, actually. but you're definitely right about the visuals! so much color and the giant, super detailed bosses were easily the coolest part. admittedly some of it does get frustrating but afaik it's unlimited continues so you'll just have to keep at it to get to the end. (or I suppose there are those cheats as I recall) this is one for sure that I'll have to look up for the collection one of these days.
10 out of 10 for me... BUT... I also have always used a cheat I got out of a friend's Nintendo power which makes you invincible EXCEPT for like... One boss's attack. I just love the visuals and sound so very much. I got it NEW back in the day for like $9. That, Captain Skyhawk and maybe Time Lord were all budget titles at one of the local electronics places. 😁 ⬆️⬆️⬆️⬆️⬇️⬅️➡️⬆️START
This is a game I've never seen before, I really like the look and sound of it, Fantastic review, I may have to give this one ago someday, But I've added it to my Eternal backlog 😂
@6:07 that's how I feel about a few NES titles, like Zelda 2. I know that the Adventure of Link is pretty much renowned for its "cryptic bs" and "brutal difficulty" ..but I've been playing it since I was 5yrs. old/1991, and I figured it all out as a kid, no internet, no walkthru, no Nintendo Power, just practice and exploration. I play thru Zelda 2 at least once a year. Its not uncommon for me to breeze thru the majority of the game without dying, only losing my first life well into the final palace. The combat can be challenging, but is the game hard? ..I dunno, maybe?
I've always been of the opinion that the difficulty of Zelda 2 has been overblown. Maybe It's because I've played it through a hundred times, but when I die in that game I know it's my own fault. Rarely does the game feel cheap aside from the occasional "getting knocked into water/lava" death that every action-platformer has.
@@HylianFox3 The unblockable axe/hammer throwers in Z2 are my biggest annoyance with the game. Otherwise, it's not too bad. Oh, and having to retrace your steps if you game over is pure 80's player contempt by design.
I own both the NES and famicom cartridge and I've always wondered if there were any differences between the two that makes one better than the other. Medusa convinced me that it's the famicom version all the way
I grabbed this game because it was advertised at having near 16-Bit graphics. Didn't even know there was an arcade version until a few years ago. Anyway, I loved this game. Probably my last NES game before upgrading to the SNES.
i actually think hes an interesting character in the illiad. hectors son, born to be king of illium (troy) eventually, his name is actually scamandrius after the river scamander. the people of troy called him astyanax which means "lord of the city" while still a baby and yea he was thrown from the city walls when illium was sacked
I clicked on this primarily to hear how you, personally, pronounced Astyanax. The only friend that owned that particular title back in the day left the 'y' out entirely and pronounced it as Ast-Uh-Nacks. I pronounced it Ast-Yanacks. I have since heard the proper way to say it is Ast-I-Uh-Nacks. Such a great game. My friend and I considered this and Lifeforce to be some of the coolest looking games at the time simply because of the rad, gorey, Cronenbergian backgrounds and bosses.
As a kid I couldn't defeat Medusa for some reason. Years after I borrowed NES with this game and defeated her, but next boss, walking stone for some reason glitched and it's head always disappeared. So I never really get to play properly this game, but I liked it... and people told me it was called Golden Axe 4. I prefer The Lord of King.
I get to play this game, however the arcade version of over NES version, I have complex relationship with the NES,my sister (13 years older than me ), had a Sega genesis while growing up best of my memory it was her only game system I don't much care for backstories in video games
I had Astyanax as a kid. And my sister is five years older than. But she really did not play games, except for a little bit of Dragon Warrior. And I really did not try to emulate her, but close enough.
I always got this title--which I never played--mixed up with the game Abadox. Probably only because I had no idea what they were other than odd titles that start w/ "A." I'd like to see a review of that game too, as they are on the "ohhhhhh yeaaah I remember!" list.
This was not a rental when I was a kid. Most video store must've not carried it. Because, if they had, it'd be considered a classic. It's borderline Sega Genesis graphics.
When I was a kid, all my games (and I had a lot - probably 30) were gifts from parents or relatives. I didn’t have much say. So they bought based on price. Or if it was a tie in to a movie or show (thinking that’d be good). What’s that mean? Yup, I played a lot of crappy LJN games. I had no idea some of the awesome, more obscure games like this existed. I have disowned my family…
I would have never known how to pronounce the title of this game had you not said it. It looks okay at least it's got a story to it where as some guys were just go to the right kill enemies with no story at all
@BigOleWords that's what I meant by sister trilogy I feel like in one of those other two videos your intro was extremelyyyy similar. Like mega deja-vu was going on. Oh well, another great video. Thanks for getting back with me! 🔥

The princess bubble dance joke was mega chefs kiss lol
That one was for my old lady. For some reason that track has become a huge joke and hit song with us.
Interesting that they chose to have the hero's love interest be his fairy companion, rather than the kidnapped princess as one would typically expect.
This game is one of those that I only ever beat with the game genie. Even going back and playing now.....nah dog...I'm good.
I don’t blame you!
There’s an in-game code that provides you with invincibility as well.

Came here with the same info 😂
I think the arcade game was a straight side-scroller with much less story to go around.
@ Yeah The arcade was certainly its own thing. You always had an axe, the graphics were sharper, but I think it had some verticality to it.
I thought there was something really familiar about it. I wonder if the same guy did the music in both games, theyre familiar too
It's like Icom saw Legendary Axe on the TG16 and said, "Hey, we can do that on the NES" and then they did.
