Games played: Mega Man X (0:00), Kirby Super Star (0:25), Donkey Kong Country 2 (0:35), Contra III (0:50), Super Metroid (1:55), ActRaiser (3:25), Demon's Crest (4:10)
Most excellent video R.B. thank you for the time and effort it took to make and edit this video. P.s. SUPER NINTENDO RULES (even the purple parts...as a matter of fact, don't take my purple parts. It would be hard to turn off and on or reset or even play the games themselves without the purple parts...) PURPLE!
I can't find anything wrong with any of the games you chose to show gameplay of but I can still find everything to complain about due to the games you left out.
A little off topic, but I teach high school and the last few years I’ve brought in my SNES Classic on the last day of school. Kids love playing Contra 3, Street Fighter II Turbo, and Super Punch Out. Many have never played these games and are immediately hooked by how much fun they are.
I think the generation the SNES is attached to is one of the greatest generations. I think Genesis (and every addon) and the SNES defined gaming going forward. Those 2D, 16-bit graphics are beautiful, and being able to go to an arcade was exciting.
@@ianswift3521 the TG16 was a noble effort and is the 3rd giant in the 2d golden age of gaming. but it barely put up a fight against the Genesis (and was blown away by later Genesis releases), it could never hold a candle to the SNES.
I grew up with a Super Nintendo, but naturally "moved on" as the 64, PS1, Gamecube, Xbox 360, and so on as they came along. But then the Wii had the Virtual Console and so I went further down the SNES iceberg, playing games like Act Raiser, Super Castlevania IV, and Contra III for the first time, and that's when I really realized how great its games were and how well they hold up. Excellent video and choice of games to show off, man!
@@shaunpiotrowski3185 I really do miss the Virtual Console. We had it really good back then. There was also Act Raiser 2 and the Act Raiser Renaissance remake. I didn't personally enjoy Renaissance's art style and Act Raiser 2 got rid of the sim parts of the game, so the original Act Raiser will always be the most special one to me!
I was lucky enough to have all 3 of those games growing up, but I have forgotten how hard it could be to get those games back in the day. Games didn't stay in stock, rental stores only had a limited selection, and used game stores were more rare. So even if you were aware of how good these games are, you might never have had the chance to try them out. The VC was great for that, and I'm glad you finally got the chance to try them! They're definitely highlights of the console library!
I didn’t grow up with the Super Nintendo, but since I started collecting in 2017, it had quickly become one of my absolute favorite consoles to collect and play games for, such a fantastic library with graphics and gameplay that aged beautifully. It is definitely one of my favorite consoles personally.
You should consider doing a video in this style for the original Playstation. I've just recently started appreciating JRPGs and that has completely changed my view on the Playstation, it's incredible with it's catalog of RPGs.
@@athiestjesus8133 PSX kinda cheats in that FF2/4 and 3/6 and Chrono Trigger were all rereleased for it. Then again, my favorite RPG of all time is Genso Suikoden II, so whatever.
The console I consider to be the best is one I never owned as a kid, only got it when I was 23 years old. That's the Atari 2600, got one after watching lots of classic game room reviews and fell in love with it, the games are so simple and yet so good. And the homebrew games coming out are amazing.
Maybe not the best but the most nostalgic. I played the N64 as a kid and it is great, got great games, even my best memories are from that system, and I even had more games on that system, however I would say the GameCube was the best. I can’t tell you how many hours I got into Animal Crossing, Mario Party, and Phantasy Star Online.
It's worth remembering that the SNES's biggest rival, the Genesis (Megadrive), came out well over a year before the SNES, during a time of great technical innovation, and it still held it's own against Nintendo's juggernaut.
In some ways, I think that's even more apt for the PC Engine, which really was the first system to make that jump. It even did CD console gaming first too. Both SNES and Genesis were really just next obvious steps from the PC Engine in most ways. The Genesis certainly so, at it simply increased most of the same specs a bit and went with that (more sprites, more backgrounds, one more button, etc. But less colours). SNES introduced some very novel things like proper transparency, Mode 7, and its truly defining controller, but was ultimately just following the lead of the other two systems too when all is said and done (more sprites, more backgrounds, etc). So, yeah, even as a SNES fan first, I think I'd like to give PC Engine the credit it's due there for truly starting the best generation in console gaming imo.
@@FatNorthernBigot Yeah, it certainly held its own technically in many ways. And it ultimately competed pretty much on a level playing field in America and ended up selling in very similar numbers, both in part because of solid hardware and also Sega's hardcore marketing too. It was a similar story in Europe and "other" territories also. Although, obviously, in Japan the SNES really stood on its own there. And I still think the PC Engine deserves a nod there too, as it came out long before the SNES and about a year before Genesis, and yet managed to output more colours on-screen than both, is capable of superior DMA than both [from what I'm told], and even has a faster CPU than that SNES and on par with the Genesis. That's dang impressive for an "8-bit" console. It certainly blew away the likes of the NES and Master System by a long ways when it launched. And it's remarkable how well it stands toe to toe with those two other giants at times. It even outsold the Genesis in Japan, although was a bit of flop elsewhere. The Neo Geo deserves a mention too, but that was a whole other beast. Still, I give it acknowledgement. :) I'd say in terms of system capabilities it would go like this: Neo Geo > SNES Genesis > PC Engine. In terms of libraries, based on quality plus number of games, it would go like this: SNES ≈> Genesis > PC Engine And in terms of hardware sales it would go like this: SNES > Genesis > PC Engine > Neo Geo. I guess that's likely why the SNES is ultimately regarded as the best system overall and even of all time by so many people. It was a very competitive generation to be sure, with a group of 2D consoles that have really help up.
@@inceptional It was a great time to be alive and play games... Players had a real choice, rather than the two cheeks on the same arse that are Xbox and PS5
My favorite console is the genesis because i love action platformers, beat em ups and shoot em ups. But snes and pc engine are amazing too. Not even counting the arcades! 90s was such a good time for games!
My personal favorite would be a weird one, but right now it is a modded wii u, because it can play almost all the nintendo games I could ever want, the gamepad is really comfortable. While I love the SNES and it was my favorite console, the wii u has so much variety and also has quality games so I would choose it any day.
Had a Sega Genesis growing up. To play Snes I had to go to a friends house. I liked the games on there at the time too. I always liked the controller. For my retro collection I bought a Snes. I am glad that I did because I find it just as good as the Sega Genesis. My favorite Snes game is Super Mario World which is my fav Mario game of all time.
SNES is the absolute GOAT. So many brilliant games, top-tier 2D, and some of the finest JRPGs ever made even until this day. Don't get me wrong, the Sega Genesis is a strong contender, and so is the PS2, but I gotta give it to the SNES.
I didn't have a Super Nintendo growing up cause all my cousins had one so I asked my parents for a Genesis. This way if I wanted to play Donkey Kong Country or Super Mario World I would just pay them a visit lol
@@affliction1979 , I actually got both systems at flea markets for good prices. I don't do that f u c k i n g console war b u l l s h i t, and I also don't tolerate it from other people as well.
I guess I'll rank my top 5 consoles: 1. Playstation 2 especially with it being backwards compatible with the Playstation 1. So, it was 2 consoles in one plus it had great games, it has MANY games that I still haven't played yet; it had a DVD player, and audio player. It was the best value for the money and since I'm saying Playstation 2 it also = Playstation 1. 2. Super Nintendo - For reasons said here 3. Sega Genesis 4. NES 5. Xbox 360.
First off just want to say I love the channel! I find your videos to be much more entertaining than most retro videos I watch. I just thought I'd drop a little tip about Trinitrons. It looks like your TV might have a bit of the classic Sony "red push" issue going on from your footage. There's a setting in the service menu (labeled slightly different on different models) it usually goes by something to the effect of AXNT or AXIS. If you disable that, or turn down in some cases, you can greatly improve the amount of red push seen on the screen. Any-hoo, keep up the awesome videos and keep eating bananas my friend! 👌💪🍌 Just thought I'd throw that out there.
Love the SNES! I'd love to see your take on the MegaDrive also. I was unfortunate with timing as a kid, I got a NES just before the SNES dropped; subsequently, I didn't have either SNES or MegaDrive but loved both. I'd have probably argued for SNES in the console wars as a kid, while still arguing both are great. With regard to the SNES' frame rate, I believe it fluctuated around 59fps, which can cause issues with some display scalers. That being said, my OSSC doesn't seem to have any problems with it. Keep doing what you do Banana-man, I love your channel!
I love your dedication to the SNES eject button, and I’m right there with you 😌 there’s something so satisfying about popping the cartridge out that way, and you don’t have to worry about damaging the sticker/artwork
The feel of the concave and convex buttons are the reason why I have nostalgia for the console... just a conforming fit to enhance your don't have to look down-ness when your a new player or a kid without a chance to win...
I still own and play my childhood SNES. I won’t pick just one favorite console (you can’t make me!) but the SNES is certainly special and, as the first console we got to own at home, it will always be one of my favorites!
The controller really seals the deal. SNES is the greatest, and as games get more complex the perfect mix of 2D quick simplicity and complexion in so many genres, it just sets itself apart more and more as a timeless and unique experience.
With each passing year I believe more and more that the SNES is the best console. It's amazing how many series arguably peaked on the console. Super Mario World, A Link to the Past, Super Metroid, Mega Man X, and more all have solid cases as the best games in their franchise, even 30+ years later.
I grew up on the N64, the Playstation and to a degree the SNES but I gotta say---I would still say the PS2 was the Greatest Console Ever. Nonstop bangers.
Same, plus the games were cheaper in price. I didn't have $80 to just casually throw down for a snes game like Donkey Kong or Megaman X2. I remember buying Sonic 3 and Vectorman 2 for $16 as a kid.
No disagreement here. My friend had a Genesis. I enjoyed playing Sonic and other SG games. We did argue about which system was better. In the end, we played both. It was great. Nowadays, only got time for the shorter games. Can’t sit on my rear end for a long time to play 10 hour plus games. Super Famicom/Nintendo get my vote. Peace!-)
I was raised with Sega consoles mostly, but I did have a NES and N64 briefly. One of my friends back then had a SNES, I thought it was decent. Anyhow, like you said it's what you were raised around that will be the best in a person's opinion (usually.) The Mega Drive (Genesis) was what i thought was the best, now as an adult I can't decide between the Saturn or Dreamcast.
The PSX really captured my top spot. There were great choices of 2D and 3D games. Game designers really tried to make unique products. I miss the innovation.
The Genesis and SNES complement each other so well. imo, the best of the best of the SNES beats the best on Genesis. Nothing on Genesis compares to Super Metroid. But the Genesis has a lot more interesting smaller games, where outside of the well known SNES titles there is a lot of bland garbage. I like the SNES more, but I like collecting for the Genesis more.
@@fwobebe5164 Genesis doesn't have Parodius, or Twinbee, or Gradius. Those to me are important for your console to have, and why I prefer the Saturn to the Genesis, the Saturn had THOSE games. Thunder Force IV though, is my favorite overall Genesis shmup.
@Bloodreign1 Gradius was so hard. Parodius is top tier for sure. That is odd why Konami didn't give Genesis a port, when they normally port to both consoles.
Personal favorite 2D console is the Sega Genesis and 3D is Xbox 360. Each had the best competition IMO and think is a great thing (I also love SNES/PS3 with TG-16/Wii growing on me yearly).
I agree with all of your points. Because, call me crazy but, as someone who got into the SUPER NINTENDO, full time, around 2017, with the SNES Classic Mini Console, I personally find the SUPER NINTENDO to be the absolute most perfect game console ever. Even more-so than the Nintendo Switch. Because as much as the praises are well deserved in being the best modern console by Nintendo, I find it hard to accept the Switch as THE Perfect Nintendo Console. Which to that, I'd say my heart leans more towards the SUPER NINTENDO ENTERTAINMENT SYSTEM, for that title alone.
I bought a SNES again after getting a PS1. I liked the Playstation but I was missing all the good 2D stuff. It's still the console that I go back to most.
The console is almost perfect. It would be nicer in black/red color, it doesn't have the"high definition graphics" label, the volume control for the headphones and the "blast processing power"...but, it is almost perfect😊
Thank you for mentioning the convex/concave buttons on the controller! I loved this feature, you could tell which row of buttons your finger was on without looking down.
The Super Nintendo is amazing and full of wonderful classic games. But I do love other gaming consoles like the Nintendo GameCube more. I hope this becomes a series covering more gaming consoles. Cool video. ^_^
Great video! I grew up in the '90s, so I actually agree. The SNES has aged like a fine wine! As a kid, I only had an NES and Genesis, but I did get to play the SNES from time to time at friends and neighbors' houses. Honestly, the 16-bit era blew me away when I was little. It is hard for me to choose between the SNES and Genesis as my favorite, too. I don't care, though, since still play both consoles and have a blast!
Nintendo and Atari for me. They’re the times I wanna remember. The original gameboy was fun. And I totlly wanted a Lynx when I saw it in the Sears and/or Service Merchandise catalogue, but that never happened. Still haven’t played one either.
First of all. Purple is a great color. The best console is a console I would agree to only play for the rest of my life. I would pick PS1 for the longer more in depth rpgs. But man the snes is definitely second place
Super Nintendo is my personal favorite. It was Nintendo doimg everything they do at its most refined, and had a balance of simplicity and complexity that hits the sweet spot for me in its library. The pixel are and chip tunes of that time have generally aged extremely well, and there are quite a few games to still discover or return to time and again.
I think Super Nintendo is well justified in the top spot if someone feels that way. For me though its the Playstation 1. Although I feel it may not be solely the console itself but that I feel this was the best generation for video games, Also the PS1 had just crazy variety of game types.
It also finally progressed beyond Nintendo's "for kids only" approach. The SNES was fantastic, but Nintendo's heavy censorship held it back from more interesting experiences, so it felt less well-rounded than the PS1 which had stuff targeting a wider range of ages. Still, there is a charm to the PG simplicity of the SNES library.
Other than it lacking a second Analog and the stick being a bit slippery- I don’t understand the bad reputation for the Dreamcast controller. Am I missing something? Back in the day we thought it was the perfect ergonomics lol- not so today (that’s the GameCube) but it’s really strange to me that it gets such a reputation.
Yeah, I wasn't aware it was all that hated. It has a hall-effect joystick, analog triggers, and heck even the VMU was novel and fun. It may not have the best build quality, but there are far worse controllers.
Yeah, it's a bit polarizing. The small buttons, lack of a six-button layout and a d-pad that most would say is a downgrade from the Saturn d-pad stick out. Especially since the Dreamcast has a lot of fighting games (even 2D ones). People don't like the analog stick and feel the buttons are awkwardly arranged around the VMU slot. Personally, I've always loved it. I tend to like controllers that feel different from everything else.
@@RetroBirdGaming I have the “benefit” like most Americans of never having played a Saturn, so there was no feeling of disappointment. The D-pad is a good point though
The super Nintendo is a great console no doubt, I still prefer the sega Genesis myself though I can see a great argument to be made for greatest console of all time for either. They tend to be the best "all rounder" consoles of their time which helps a lot. The real question, of course, is which one is better? Here's my take, and I think it's a pretty darn good one. The SN is the guitar of the video game world and the Genesis is the banjo. As a musician of some experience, this comparison has a lot more going for it than you might think. Guitars are approachable, they have a great reputation, they are extremely flexible and fit into almost every genre of musiy one way or another. People tend to really like guitars because their is almost always something they like that you can play on a guitar. And they sound great too lol. Banjos are definitely more niche. They have a twang that puts people off sometimes. They aren't as popular and they aren't neary as flexible in genres. But if you play in a genre that works with the banjo(folk, old timey, bluegrass, country, etc) it is one of the most prominent instruments and more often than not takes the show. The banjo also gas many attachments that give it better tone, resonance, and volume like the resonator, flanges, and various tone rings. It's part of the banjo's identity. Now just think of all the parallels between these instruments and consoles and tell me I'm wrong. My conclusion would thus be this. Like the guitar, the SN is probably the right console for you and will do whatever you'd like, but the Genesis like the banjo inarguably does some things better and if you like that kind of genre(like music) you probably will prefer the Genesis, especially if you like the twang of it's sound card like I do :). Last of all, it should be noted that instead of pitting these consoles against each other i think just like the guitar and banjo, they are even better when you put them together. Let them work as a team and you will get the best experience from both. "Dueling Banjos" often uses a guitar because the sounds compliment each other so well, and like the song which has a playful back and forth "duel" they always come together and play their best as a duet.
In an era where the console wars never died with some folks, as someone who owns both, and collects for both, it's nice having a 16 bit library that combined stands at 396 games (plus about 15-130 GB/GBC games to play on a Super Game Boy). My NES alone though, 353 games, some Famicom games.
Your SNES collection is a thing of beauty Mr. Bird 🫡 I have a hard time choosing between it and the Genesis. That patented sega personality and charm is a real draw for me. Plus, it’s the one I grew up with. That said though, the amount of all-time bangers on the snes is undeniable. And the controller is 👌 (six button genesis is pretty decent too tho 😉)
My favorite consoles of all time are SNES and PS2. I would rank SNES over the PS2 just because I grew up with it, playin it with all my friends, late night Saturdays staying up trying to beat games until the sunrise, renting games on weekends, trading tips and tricks on the playground, sharing Nintendo Power codes and so many great memories! There are just waaaaay too many bangers to name, although you showed a ton of them, on this console. I would be here for hours typing up all the S tier games.
I really have to give it to the Snes and always have, bias and non bias. It is just absolutely superb in all categories! To be honest the 16 bit era is superior to what came next, and I think that the ease of use is the driving factor. Little to no load times, plug a game in and you are good, people tend to forget that aspect often. We waste so much time in loading, as great as the generations after were, they take more time starting and transitioning. The games were solid and many are works of art, it is a close call between Snes and Genesis. It is all speculation but I think the Snes really holds its own in contest, without needing much debate to back up it's credentials.
Your points are pretty much identical to mine for the SNES. It represented sort of the pinnacle of the 2D era of home consoles before the next generation would make the dramatic shift into 3D space. The graphical fidelity possible on the system was a pretty big leap from the 8-bit consoles before it and the sound and music were also greatly improved. It has a large and varied library with an incredible amount of third-party support. It managed to come fairly close to bringing many arcade experiences into the home, particularly with the fighting game craze of the '90s. It also had simple, accessible and reliable hardware with no pointless gimmicks and possibly the best (2D) controller ever made. Obviously, everyone's opinion on a subject like this is going to be influenced by their age and relative experience but however you slice it, the SNES has more than its fair share of reasons to be considered among the best.
Good video. I grew up with each generation of consoles starting with the NES, and I would argue that the SNES was the most memorable, also with some really memorable parts with the ps1 and N64 consoles. But I would also agree with other comments that point out that the best console seems to be the one that kids grew up playing. BUT, as an example and argument for the SNES I would put DK country 1-3 up against any other DK games that came after and ask you to find a better one. There’s something to be said about the limitations of a console’s hardware. I would argue that the move to 3d radically changed video games, and not necessarily for the better. The concise and creative uses of the limited 2d hardware really set this generation apart from all future consoles, some of which was lightly broached in this video.
I had a Genesis as a kid, and I hate to admit it but the SNES is better. But I like the PS2 most, racing games are my favorite and the PS2 library of racing games is a deep pool with some of the all time great racing/driving games in it.
The last years of SNES gave birth to modern gaming. Games starting looking really good and were getting long. You could save. Starting to feel open world. Does anyone start playing LttP, FF6, or Chrono Trigger and say I can't handle these old graphics and primitive gameplay? Never, not even to this day. Because this is exactly when games got truely classic.
7:20 pro-tip about Super-R-Type for SNES, there's an IPS patch that enables the SA-1 chip and eliminates slowdown. The same guy made patches for Contra 3 and Gradius 3 as well. Gradius 3 was especially notorious for slowdown since it was a launch title, so the developers didn't have the experience on how to maximize the consoles hardware yet. konami learned quickly though.
The N64 is probably my personal favorite, but I know I'm more in the minority there. I think the SNES is... probably the easiest console to make a GOAT argument for, so not really a hot take. Although, arguing SNES is probably a Gen X/Millennial take, so maybe PS2 or even Switch are safer takes these days.
Another banger video, good job dude! ps I always thought that the Snes purple buttons looked like the candy called smarties, and sort felt like them too.
My personal favorite console of all time. There are way too many great games on the SNES to count. Here’s my personal top 12: 12. F-Zero 11. Yoshi’s Island 10. Street Fighter 2: Turbo 9. Super Castlevania 4 8. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 4: Turtles in Time 7. The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past 6. Mega Man X 5. Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy’s Kong Quest 4. Super Metroid 3. Final Fantasy 6 2. Chrono Trigger 1. Super Mario World
The A B buttons being convex and the X and Y being concave on the US version is pretty different to what I grew up with in England. No concave buttons whatsoever, but a lovely Green , Blue, Yellow and Red instead of the purple. When I think of the SNES the 4 colours make up a massive chunk of my memory, it just seemed so vibrant and appealing
I've owned a NES, SNES, Sega Genesis and PS1 before. Currently, I have a Switch, Wii, and PS2 connected to my TV. The PS2 has been and currently still is my favorite console of all time!
I don't look at a console and say x is the best, there are multiple consoles that do game categories that arent that great on SNES. RPG's are SNES's wheelhouse. Fighters are SNK AES's wheelhouse. Shumps are NEC PC-Engines wheelhouse. MegaDrive/SNES share the platfomers and beatem ups. MegaDrive's wheelhouse is Sports games. This doesnt mean a console can't have a game that breaks these opinions but they are few and far, you cant really only have one game that breaks these categories and say the entire console is good at it.
Mostly true. I made a simple video about the 16-bit consoles a few years back. Long gone now. This was the list i compiled, if i remember correctly, and is without the sub-genres: (with all the sub-genres included it was much more even, unlike below) adventures -- SNES (close call with SMD, with SNES just having a bit more of them) beat 'em ups -- SMD -- (Streets of Rage series, Golden Axe series, The Punisher, Hyperstone Heist, Two Crude Dudes and more) fighters -- NG -- (the creator of the original Street Fighter, 1987, left Capcom and joined SNK, to start a beautiful legacy) first-person shooters -- SMD/SNES tie -- (Zero Tolerance and Bloodshot vs Doom and Wolfenstein 3D) light gun -- SNES -- (not much contest here) platformers -- SMD/SNES tie -- (action-platformers fare better on SMD, while SNES platformers are more methodical) pinball -- PCE -- (Crush series, Time Cruise and another one, can't remember the name right now) puzzle -- NG/PCE tie -- (NG has many greats, PCE has more unique ones) racing -- SMD/SNES tie -- (mode 7 kart-style racers are best on SNES, while simulated racing is better on SMD) rpg -- SNES -- (unbeat here) run 'n gun -- NG -- (Metal Slug series, Shock Troopers series and Ninja Commando) shoot 'em ups -- PCE -- (there's so many of them!) sports -- SMD -- (most, except PCE, have at least some great sports games, but SMD has more of them) strategy -- SMD -- (with turn-based it's about even with SNES, but has better real-time strategy games) SMD and SNES have all genres from that era pretty much covered, with NG and PCE dominating a few.
That thing is a godsend to those of us who collect GB and black cart GBC games. My clear GBC, well my old eyes have trouble seeing the small screen nowadays, and I don't own a backlit GBA SP, just a regular one, so those are relegated to there only. Shame the DS isn't GBC compatible as well, would really help.
The SNES may be the greatest “all around” console of all time. While the technology for vast open worlds didn’t exist back in the 90s, I would honestly argue that these large expansive worlds have not proven to be more fun than anything the 16-Bit era had to offer. Games for the SNES ranged from being something you could plug and play to sprawling RPGs that had epic stories to tell. Sports games, like Madden and NBA Live, could cover full seasons, while Super Mario Kart and NBA Jam allowed for countless hours of competitive arcade style fun. The creativity that developers displayed was truly mind blowing at the time. 3D games? Star Fox and Doom showed everyone that door to the future. Large detailed graphics? Hey, Donkey Kong County and Toy Story replicated the feel of an interactive Pixar movie come to life. Let’s not forget fighting games. While not the first to do so, the SNES gave, what I consider to be its most important title of the system’s life; Street Fighter II. For anyone who grew up in the 90s and frequented arcades, the fact that Street Fighter II was playable in your living room was astounding. The fact that it was an awesome port that featured just about everything from the arcade only solidified the impression. It even forced the direct competition to change controller options in order to allow for their somewhat lacking versions of the game to even play properly (I’m looking at you, Mr. Sega Genesis). Heck, even the PC Engine had to release a six button controller for their version of Street Fighter II in Japan. It got even better (for Genesis fans) when Mortal Kombat dropped the next year. Now you had arcade competitions AND bloody fatalities at home, too. Mortal Kombat II and Killer Instinct followed suit. Soon, the console market was flooded with “me too” fighting games, looking to take the crown from Capcom’s classic. None of this would have happened had the excellent port of Street Fighter II not found its way onto the Super Nintendo. While the Neo Geo was more powerful and the Genesis was expanding into the world of CD gaming technology, it can be argued that the SNES was the ultimate system. The sound capabilities, graphical effects, color palette, and controller came together to form the greatest all around system from a trusted brand, and all for $200. The legacy of the SNES can be found in every subsequent system since its release. Controllers are mostly modeled after the design of the SNES. Games have taken inspiration from Mario, Zelda, and Metroid more than any other games from the era. Sure, these arguments could be made for the NES, too; but I feel the SNES refined what came before it to a polished FL diamond. It was the perfect system for what any gaming fan was looking for. Other systems had their strengths, but the SNES had the library, the design, the ingenuity, the variety, the ability, and the quality that nearly all other consoles failed to meet. Because of this, in the contest of “SNES vs. Everything,” the Super Nintendo comes out on top.
@@Saber_Nico The PS2 is the best selling console of all time for sure, but not enough 2D games, though Japan got a lot of SNK fighters in Japan that are awesome ports.
In terms of graphics/processing power... I love the SNES(Genesis and PCE) but I would have to give it to the Neo Geo for longevity(15 years?) and overall power. If Samurai Shodown on the SNES was 1:1 with the original Neo Geo version I would agree but the SNES version didn't even come close to the Neo Geo.
Comparing a console game that was under $60 on a console over 200 bucks, to a machine priced around $600, with games costing upwards of $200. Interesting take there chief.
I was born in '97 (which incidentally means I'm the same age as FFVII), so I didn't discover the SNES until I emulated games in my teens and later was introduced to the classics (and the controller) by the SNES Classic. Despite this, I would agree that it is definitely one of, if not the, greatest consoles of all time. I do agree that the Genesis had some fantastic games, though. Incidentally, my favorite _system_ to play overall is the Nintendo DS, which in a number of respects feels like a successor to the SNES while also doing enough outside-the-box stuff to be considered the Miss Frizzle of gaming -- it took chances, it made mistakes, and it got messy, but it provided a unique experience and in the end we all learned something from it.
I think the reason why these systems (and the GBA, for that matter) tend to be so lauded is because they were at the perfect intersection of having enough power to do cool stuff and have beautiful pixel graphics, while also having a number of limitations that the devs had to devise ingenious solutions to solve, which led to a lot of really interesting games that looked great. I suspect the Genesis may also be in this category, but I am significantly less familiar with it so I can't say for sure.
I agree with you on the SNES being my favorite. Yes, it helped that I was a teen in the 90's. And I believe they worked hard at being great with having stiff competition from the Genesis. Great times!
ActRaiser was such an underrated game.
Loving the timestamps incase I wanna check out the classics
I was definitely about to ask! 😂
The 16-bit era embodied a special kind of magic that has yet to be repeated.
Maybe that's why I have no interest in 8-bit style indy games? I had a SNES growing up.
Never thought about that until now.
Personally I prefer the 32-bit era
SNES is legendary.
as are the Sega Dreamcast and Mega Drive
A little off topic, but I teach high school and the last few years I’ve brought in my SNES Classic on the last day of school. Kids love playing Contra 3, Street Fighter II Turbo, and Super Punch Out. Many have never played these games and are immediately hooked by how much fun they are.
You're doing the right thing - keep up the good work!
You need to ROM that thing. Imagine how much gaming you could introduce them kids into!
I absolutely love this. Thank you for getting the younger generations excited about these games!
The super Nintendo is so good that crack would be less addictive lol
You're an awesome teacher! That is seriously cool.
I grew up with the Sega Genesis, but I can appreciate the SNES.
Similarly, I grew up with my SNES but I can’t deny how dope the Genesis was and was eager to play one with any chance I got!
me too.
I had both though my Genesis was short lived bc of my step sis destroying it. But i spent more time on the genesis than i did on the snes
You couldn't really go wrong with either. I had a SNES, but there was plenty of great stuff on the Genesis.
Describes me exactly too.
I think the generation the SNES is attached to is one of the greatest generations. I think Genesis (and every addon) and the SNES defined gaming going forward. Those 2D, 16-bit graphics are beautiful, and being able to go to an arcade was exciting.
2D graphics are amazing. And 2D graphics age very well, so it doesn’t matter how much time has passed, they’re still beautiful to look at.

Act Raiser was a really good game. My first experience was also on the Wii. I hope one a day nintendo will be able to replicate thar model again.
They're definitely highlights of the console library!
if it wasnt for rompacks in the early 2000s i would never have played actraiser and subsequently bought the cartridge.
I didn’t grow up with the Super Nintendo, but since I started collecting in 2017, it had quickly become one of my absolute favorite consoles to collect and play games for, such a fantastic library with graphics and gameplay that aged beautifully. It is definitely one of my favorite consoles personally.
The SNES/SFC and the Genesis/Megadrive were unique and special, and made each other better.
You should consider doing a video in this style for the original Playstation.
I've just recently started appreciating JRPGs and that has completely changed my view on the Playstation, it's incredible with it's catalog of RPGs.
The SNES is no slouch with it's RPG lineup either
It definitely does.
SNES was my first and probably favorite console.
I just would enjoy another Retrobird video about the PlayStation.
Have you played Legend of Dragoon yet? Super long but also super good 😊
@@athiestjesus8133 PSX kinda cheats in that FF2/4 and 3/6 and Chrono Trigger were all rereleased for it. Then again, my favorite RPG of all time is Genso Suikoden II, so whatever.
Yeah, I'm considering doing this for all the consoles. It feels like a way of celebrating each console.
Let's be honest. The best video console of all time is the one you played the most as a kid.
That is correct; the console I played the most as a kid is indeed, and objectively, the best one.
Which would be the SNES by the way.
The console I consider to be the best is one I never owned as a kid, only got it when I was 23 years old. That's the Atari 2600, got one after watching lots of classic game room reviews and fell in love with it, the games are so simple and yet so good. And the homebrew games coming out are amazing.
Definitely but also SNES 😅jk
Definitely not. Mine was N64 and I never go back to it
Maybe not the best but the most nostalgic. I played the N64 as a kid and it is great, got great games, even my best memories are from that system, and I even had more games on that system, however I would say the GameCube was the best. I can’t tell you how many hours I got into Animal Crossing, Mario Party, and Phantasy Star Online.
thank you for mentioning the convex and concave buttons! it was such a genius little detail. i’m so with you on the B-Y thumb-rock.
Just over 2 years for the North American release actually
@@joeyjo-joshabadu9636 "well over a year" could also be "just over two years" 🤣 although your comment makes the genesis even more impressive. 👍
I'd say in terms of system capabilities it would go like this: Neo Geo > SNES Genesis > PC Engine.
In terms of libraries, based on quality plus number of games, it would go like this: SNES ≈> Genesis > PC Engine
And in terms of hardware sales it would go like this: SNES > Genesis > PC Engine > Neo Geo.

Whoa! Look how big your audience is getting!! Great work, Retro Bird! You deserve it!
Even as a dedicated Sega guy, the SNES is a classic juggernaut that still beats the crap out of todays works.
But still Sega Genesis #1 🎉
Definitely a great console for fans of retro 16 bit RPGs.
That Sega 'quality' sound. TING!! PING!! (Robot fart).
Yeah close call but I think that "genesis dose" deserve the crown of best console
It absolutely beat the piss poor of what we had today like PS5/Switch but Meta Quest 2/3 is really awesome though
Genesis does what Super Nintendon't
The pixels on his CRT are just soo clean, how did you film the crt isnt it difficult to capture on camera?
Thank you! Yes, it is very difficult to film. Requires a lot of tinkering with the camera.
8:32 But the Genesis' 6-button controller also does that. Only it's the other way around.

I guess I'll rank my top 5 consoles:
2. Super Nintendo - For reasons said here
3. Sega Genesis
4. NES
5. Xbox 360.
The SNES is like a fine wine
My top 3 are PS2, SNES, and PS1 in that order
Sega Genesis is the best console of all time 🖤
I respectfully disagree.
This channel needs more views, been binging your stuff the past few days and been loving it a ton! I hope you get your chance to really pop off man
I loved the SNES. It was my last Nintendo console, and the loss of 3rd party support was a big part of that.
It outlasted all of its contemporaries and was still kicking out the hits well into the 32-bit era.
With each passing year I believe more and more that the SNES is the best console. It's amazing how many series arguably peaked on the console. Super Mario World, A Link to the Past, Super Metroid, Mega Man X, and more all have solid cases as the best games in their franchise, even 30+ years later.
My favorite console: The MiSTer FPGA.
I still like my PC best ^^
Plus S-Video support right out the box.
7:00 I’m glad i’m not the only one playing Donkey Kong games the right way 😂😂❤❤
I grew up on the N64, the Playstation and to a degree the SNES but I gotta say---I would still say the PS2 was the Greatest Console Ever. Nonstop bangers.
IMO it comes down to whether you like 2D or 3D more. which is SNES vs PS2
I loved my sega genesis when I was a kid.
Same, plus the games were cheaper in price. I didn't have $80 to just casually throw down for a snes game like Donkey Kong or Megaman X2. I remember buying Sonic 3 and Vectorman 2 for $16 as a kid.
@@fwobebe5164 nice! Vectorman games were awesome to play back then and still today.
Peace!-)
Sega got way more arcade ports than Snes, and the best shmups in all of gaming.
I also did not grow up with SNES, yet I think it’s the absolute best. Those graphics have aged like a bottle of fine wine
The best shmups on Snes don't hold a candle to the best shmups on Genesis.
As much as I love SNES the PS2 had more games and more hits and sales. And I grew up on the SNES.
thank you
Personal favorite 2D console is the Sega Genesis and 3D is Xbox 360.
No its the Japanese Sega Megadrive!!!!!!! 🎉🎉🎉😂
I have one of those and love it!
For 2D, I favor Sega Genesis. I have a Mega Everdrive Pro, so adding Final Fight CD with the Streets of Rage trilogy is a dream.
One of my favorite Systems of all time next to Genesis and NES is Super NES
i really think both, genesis and snes are awesome😊
Although I grew up with the NES-SNES and then PS1, the PS2 definitely takes the cake
"Dueling Banjos" often uses a guitar because the sounds compliment each other so well, and like the song which has a playful back and forth "duel" they always come together and play their best as a duet.
the Sega Genesis maybe my all time Favorite game system, however i agree the super NES is the Greatest Console Ever
Bird 🫡
I have a hard time choosing between it and the Genesis. That patented sega personality and charm is a real draw for me. Plus, it’s the one I grew up with. That said though, the amount of all-time bangers on the snes is undeniable. And the controller is 👌 (six button genesis is pretty decent too tho 😉)
I grew up with the Genesis but over the past few years I've been playing a crap ton of SNES games and I've realized I missed out big time.
Indeed you had, better late than never as they say.
Yeah, it just has so much going for it.
I loved my SNES. Got it in 92. Then again I also loved the genesis and TG16. Owned them all at the time.
Super jealous of that! Must've been great.
You aren't kidding. I'm a die hard racing game fan myself and midnight club is easily one of the best ever. Wish they would bring it back.
Because this is exactly when games got truely classic.
the first LoZ and FF games on the NES were able to save your progress
7:20 pro-tip about Super-R-Type for SNES, there's an IPS patch that enables the SA-1 chip and eliminates slowdown. The same guy made patches for Contra 3 and Gradius 3 as well. Gradius 3 was especially notorious for slowdown since it was a launch title, so the developers didn't have the experience on how to maximize the consoles hardware yet. konami learned quickly though.
Thanks for the great videos, your reviews with your humor make the videos very enjoyable to watch, keep up the great work, peace
Thank you for watching!
The Up movie is definitely contender for best movie of all time!
So darn good :)
Another banger video, good job dude!
ps
I always thought that the Snes purple buttons looked like the candy called smarties, and sort felt like them too.
If Up is the best movie in the world, then is Mean Girls the best DVD?
Definitely the best DVD :)
The first time I played Mute City in F-Zero really blew my mind.
And that music!!
I'm still finding SNES gems now that I'm playing Japanese games we never got here
My personal favorite console of all time. There are way too many great games on the SNES to count. Here’s my personal top 12:
12. F-Zero
11. Yoshi’s Island
10. Street Fighter 2: Turbo
9. Super Castlevania 4
8. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 4: Turtles in Time
7. The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
6. Mega Man X
5. Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy’s Kong Quest
4. Super Metroid
3. Final Fantasy 6
2. Chrono Trigger
1. Super Mario World
for me on the first place stands at least 8 games. Secret of mana, castle4,Yoshi, Zelda,DKC trilogy, and so on !
I got to say the ps2 is my favorite console. I never had a Super Nintendo. But it is a good console and I do enjoy playing it.
I've owned a NES, SNES, Sega Genesis and PS1 before. Currently, I have a Switch, Wii, and PS2 connected to my TV.
The PS2 has been and currently still is my favorite console of all time!
Discussions like this only fuels more console wars.
This is console wars! ^^ Are we doin this?! XD
This was the list i compiled, if i remember correctly, and is without the sub-genres:
(with all the sub-genres included it was much more even, unlike below)
adventures -- SNES (close call with SMD, with SNES just having a bit more of them)
beat 'em ups -- SMD -- (Streets of Rage series, Golden Axe series, The Punisher, Hyperstone Heist, Two Crude Dudes and more)
fighters -- NG -- (the creator of the original Street Fighter, 1987, left Capcom and joined SNK, to start a beautiful legacy)
first-person shooters -- SMD/SNES tie -- (Zero Tolerance and Bloodshot vs Doom and Wolfenstein 3D)
light gun -- SNES -- (not much contest here)
platformers -- SMD/SNES tie -- (action-platformers fare better on SMD, while SNES platformers are more methodical)
pinball -- PCE -- (Crush series, Time Cruise and another one, can't remember the name right now)
puzzle -- NG/PCE tie -- (NG has many greats, PCE has more unique ones)
racing -- SMD/SNES tie -- (mode 7 kart-style racers are best on SNES, while simulated racing is better on SMD)
rpg -- SNES -- (unbeat here)
run 'n gun -- NG -- (Metal Slug series, Shock Troopers series and Ninja Commando)
shoot 'em ups -- PCE -- (there's so many of them!)
sports -- SMD -- (most, except PCE, have at least some great sports games, but SMD has more of them)
strategy -- SMD -- (with turn-based it's about even with SNES, but has better real-time strategy games)
SMD and SNES have all genres from that era pretty much covered, with NG and PCE dominating a few.
You didn’t even mention the SNES’s ace in the hole: The Super Gameboy.
The dreamcast controller is amazing! The dirty dog is the game cube controller...
Mario, Zelda, Donkey Kong, Mega Man, Bomberman, Earthbound, Final Fantasy do I need to go on? SNES
I strongly agree that the snes is the best console. Mode7 will always be special to me.
Yeah... that about sums it all up. I respect your opinion.
@@AnonimitySmith Well, thank you.
I wouldnt say greatest of all time, it definitely was the top during it's run, but the greatest console of all time to this day is the PS2.
@@Saber_Nico The PS2 is the best selling console of all time for sure, but not enough 2D games, though Japan got a lot of SNK fighters in Japan that are awesome ports.
@@Bloodreign1 2D games? you make it sound like 2D games is better than 3D games which is further from the truth
The snes is probably my favorite system! I love a ton of them but I keep going back to the SNES.
It has the DKC trilogy on it so yes. Yes it is.
I agree with you on the SNES being my favorite. Yes, it helped that I was a teen in the 90's. And I believe they worked hard at being great with having stiff competition from the Genesis. Great times!
