As an old fart former pilot (most hours in a Mooney M20C) I have to say that I enjoyed this immensely. The finale JATO takeoff was a thing of beauty; I was amazed at how well your attitude was held so stable. I fully expected that the rocket ignition would totally overcome your ability to maintain control. I suppose the unintended sequential ignitions of the rocket motors turned out to be a real boon to the performance of the aircraft. Either way it turned into an EXTREME joy to watch! Congratulations on the success! (BTW, I have seen a few of your videos, so I recognize that your skill level is quite high.)
shame on you :) to be fair though, I thought stan was getting trashed too, he wasn't gonna fit in my truck and I had the biggest vehicle out of all of us. I guess peter had a trailer tho :D

Stan plus sugar JATO motors equals redemption. He nailed that take assisted take off pretty well. Stan was a nice get, that plane is boss. I was cringing through the beginning minutes though. That bird was never going to fly.
I like 'Stan'. It reminds me of a rare WW2 RAF aircraft called an 'Armstrong-Whitworth Albemarle' It was designed as a medium bomber, but it had very advanced flight characteristics, was very, very tough, and unusually, a tricycle undercarriage. It was used mainly for 'hush hush' jobs like spy dropping or recovery of, say crashed V2 rocket parts, or leaflet dropping, or as a glider tug, or early electronic warfare. Fact is, most people today have no idea it existed. I saw one mentioned in a 'Biggles' book when I was a kid, and it took years actually to find out what one looked like. It looked rather like 'Stan'. Loved the RATO idea. Grant Thompson, 'The King Of Random' has a very detailed video on making sugar rockets - and another using his kids' Lego to test various fuel ratios with. His rocket method is very precise. Worth watching. Ever thought of mounting a rocket on a boat? Nah. That's a really bad idea, although...
Jet-Assisted Take Off! just like the C-130 Fat Albert! Do you already have a video on how to make homemade rocket engines? Or could you make one in the future? As a teenager I loved using Estes rocket engines in very unconventional ways (trying to make a shoe fly (spoiler: it didn't), adding them to those firework battle tanks, etc) and just loved DIY firework stuff in general. We would buy stuff at the store and modify it and then battle against each other. It's been about 10 years and I want to get back into it, but with a college education and some electronics experience, along with inspiration from UA-camrs like yourself, I would love to make stuff way better than I could have before. It would be a miracle if teenage me wasn't on some type of watch list for buying 20 lbs of potassium nitrate on eBay.
Whoo! That JATO takeoff though! Cant wait to see what else you do with STAN, we had a great time building him, flying him, and hanging with you and the other cool people at FliteFest. Shame about your little wooden twin engine thing though, looks like it'd be a rocket with the right CG. If you're not gonna fix it, I'd love a Crack at it... (pun maybe intended? It is wood, after all) -James Stewart Addendum, if you're keeping STAN around, I'd love to see him at FliteFest next year. Maybe formation flying with STAN 2?!?! Hint Hint?
you don't have to cook it down if you are using powdered sugar and milled kno3. put the kno3 inside a ball mill for a few hours and mix it up with the sugar. Then just pack it into motors with a wooden dowel.
Dont think many people who watch this would be into sea shanties but for the cardboard plane: "Arise and be merry And sing out while you can The world will never see the likes Of dear old Stan"
I went to Flite Fest on the last day and I looked for you but you weren't there. But... we found one of your stickers in the grass. So... yeah. That was cool. Also, awesome video and I love you're channel. :)
To get the sugar rockets to work, mix stump remover and powered sugar in a 65% sump remover and 35% sugar by weight. Leave as a powder. Get a pvc tube and a wooden rod that fit snugly inside. Pack a bentonite clay plug approximately 2cm thick, buy placing the tube on a hard flat surface and puck the plug in increments by hitting the rod with a rubber mallet. Then pack the white powder in increments into the tube in the same fashion. The smaller the increments and the harder you pack the powder the more power the rocket will have. Leave room for a second plug and make it the same as the first. Then get a 5mm drill bit and drill slowly down the centre of then motor until you reach the top plug. Insert a sparkler as a fuse and enjoy. Hope this gets seen and is of use.
every youtuber when he gets silver playbutton : I will put it on shelf for preview. Peter Sripol when *HE* gets silver playbutton : LAUNCH IT INTO THE AIR!

Another awesome video! Sorry you didn't feel well. Did you get the boost rocket idea from a C-130 JATO system? Congrats on 300K, well deserved. Since you previously made a microwave fly why not do that with the play button in a toaster oven. I know the oven would take a ridiculous amount of power but you're a smart guy.
Dear Peter Sripol I have been inspired about your intelligence about rc things and engineering and I have created a drone that was 3 d printed. I wish I had a workshop like yours. I wish I could do everything you could.
The nozzle is to small. I've run a bunch of experiments. Also it is best to use cat litter end caps and don't cook the fuel, use it dry without melting it down.
Love love love your videos, the music always really knocks them up a notch too, one of the few people im subscribed to I will instantly watch a new upload!
The "Guided Missile" RC plane was cool. I would like to see something like that luanch from a vacuum cannon. I imagine with a 20ft vacuum cannon of 4" diameter, you could launch the glider quite high.
What's the reason for cooking the sugar rocket fuel? If you will mix it, don't cook it and pack it in your PVC really hard with a dowel it will work great. Sugar rockets won't work near as well if they sat up and got a little moister in them.
Peter, you've come a long way in such a short time.It is amazing,I'm truly happy for you and you have earned it.I remember your first video after leaving FT and while it was cool enough to watch it was truly nothing like the stuff you're doing now. Please keep up the good work and try not to go too "vloggy" like some other channels have.....FT ;-)
Sometimes things have to go really wrong before they can go really right. Not sad at all that the first design didn't work, it was a fun story and turned out awesome! Loved "stan", so glad you met those guys.
If they're exploding you're probably getting air pockets in them. Mixing in a little ethanol will make it runnier and mitigate that, but then you have to wait for it to evaporate, which can take quite a while. If you want slightly better performance, a wooden nozzle won't expand as much as the fuel burns and is cheap. If you want a lot better performance designing a metal nozzle for the thrust parameters you want involves relatively simple math that's easy to look up online and you can reuse the nozzle between engines as long as you make everything a consistent size. (And don't lose them...)

1. The inventor made an RC plane.
