    • @shere_kan8329
      @shere_kan8329 4 роки тому +15

      This would be stupid, a 20 second burn time would either mean : an enormous amount of Rocket Candy (hum, talking about hundreds of kilos), or a very little chamber pressure resulting in no thrust at all and just being a smoke grenade and waste weight...

      It'd be awesome if he can set off a set of motors in sequence so he can get sustained Thrust. It could be an awesome collaboration with another channel that focuses on mechanics. Peter just needs a spring loaded automatic rocket igniter. The final charge that is usually used to deploy a parachute can be used to eject the rocket and ignite the next one.

    Your drone launch system should be moving forward so there's air moving across the wings before release. You'll gain stability that is lost when you drop it while hovering still. It doesn't have to be enough for lift, just enough for the flow to be established across the lifting surfaces in the right direction.

  • @probablynotabigtoe9407
    @probablynotabigtoe9407 5 років тому +128

    It probably failed a stable flight due to the mounting position of the rocket motor.
    The center of thrust was too high causing the plane to go into a nose dive.

      ok genius

    • @Tuulos
      @Tuulos 5 років тому +2

      Yeah. It will be interesting to see if Peter redesigns the mounting location. Centerline would obviously be nice for balance but might pose for a structural challenge. Bottom mount would send the plane to orbit but might pose a new problem when landing.

    • @finniko1995
      @finniko1995 5 років тому +4

      Could've easily prevented this if he had 3D printed the body in a way that the rocket fits nice and tidy in the same spot where the propeller motor was. Perhaps make some extra protection for the electronics in case the rocket has this staging part where it ejects a small amount of fire from the top at the end.

    • @coffeewithalexander
      @coffeewithalexander 5 років тому +3

      Agreed, but there was still some pilot error behind that final flight. Lack of research and incorrect assumptions are pilot errors, not design flaws.
      Also, their ignition altitude was too low to allow for any corrections.
      If they had used a prop on the nose to get it to speed and altitude, then ignited, it would have been easier to control. Even launching it from the ground like the model rockets would have been a better result.

    • @Cult1022
      @Cult1022 5 років тому +4

    • @lazar2175
      @lazar2175 5 років тому +16

      I ordered few a J class motors off of internet because i was doing a project for my fluid dynamics class where i was supposed to turn in a research paper on the effect of air temperature, humidity and pressure on the self propelled ballistic object.
      Smarty pants me ran a steel cable down a long field, about 350m and used a modified chess clock to measure time and then used a GoPro's slow motion option and a backdrop consisting of evenly spaced lines to measure the velocity of the rocket and i also used some Arduino sensors to gather the exact information like humidity and temp instead of relying on commercial weather stations.
      Now sorry for that long wall of text, but the actual story goes as:
      I've had 2 of those motors left in a drawer from that project.
      One night, around New Year, one of my younger siblings got a giant foam glider.
      You see where this is going, i attach a J-class motor to the styrofoam glider and i use a simple timer to set it off.
      The thing went up with the speed of light, then lost the wings and the body continued flying like a untied ballon before it finally hit a tree and reduced itself to atoms.
      Turns out there was even a carbon fiber shaft reinforcing the wings but the glue failed.
      TL;DR Don't do it unless you want to start a forest fire and destroy your younger brother's xmas toy.

    I would like to see a lot more of this type of thing.
    I loved the rear-view clips when the rocket motors kicked in and the plane just engages warpdrive. Perhaps some fast gyros to keep ahold of it, and staging smaller motors to pick up speed before lighting the bigger motor, would help keep it controllable and get longer footage.

    Maybe design a plane around the bigger motor so that the thrust axis is right through the plane and also use a bigger ignition voltage? I've found that using a pwm switch and the flight pack is usually enough for an instant trigger of the rocket. Would love to see you use the huge engines properly.

  • @FireheartIndustries
    @FireheartIndustries 4 роки тому +3

    I would really like to see him revisit this project with some tweaks. I'm pretty sure the center of thrust was too high above the center of mass, which caused the plane to nose down violently every time the rockets ignited. I feel like if he had the rocket motor more centered along the length of the body (like where the propeller motor mounted originally) then it would have been easier to control and less jarring if there was a delay from the rocket ignition. It would likely take a bit of reinforcement to the internal structure immediately forward of the rocket motor, but I really would like to see the plane fall apart the way he wanted it to, rather than a full throttle nosedive into the ground.
    And yes, I know that there are plenty of aircraft that have their engines either way above or way under their center of mass. This is pretty common for some aircraft like private jets, however, they have comparatively low thrust/weight ratios when put side by side to solid rocket motors. They also have the benefit of being throttled up/down on an as needed basis. Solid rockets on the other hand are full throttle until depleted, and if they have a high enough thrust/weight ratio, any deviation from center will completely dictate the direction of your craft.

Why didn't you guys have the quadcopter moving in the direction of the plane's trajectory before dropping the plane? Wouldn't that be better for gaining initial control of it instead of it freefalling for 40ft before you're able to start gliding forward?
