  • Stephen and his Mother head to Bury St Edmunds in Suffolk where Martin set up home years ago with his wife and daughter. In 1932, Stephens Mother was born and lived in this house throughout her younger years, she recalls her memories of those days.
Stephen Fry seems as English as tweed, silver toast racks and the London black cab he can be seen driving around the streets of the capital. However, Stephens ancestry is in fact of Jewish European descent.
The story that pricked Stephen's interest the most when researching his family was that of his beloved maternal grandfather, Martin Newman. Martin's actual name was Neumann. By the time of his death, when Stephen was just eleven years old, his flamboyance had made an indelible mark on his grandson.
Stephen hopes to discover more about Martin's life and what happened to the other branches of the Neumann family?

Well I never! My family, one time, owned the property next door to Stephens parents home, off of, Southgate Green, BSE. Very interesting to say the least!

I visited Bury in 2004 several times from the US. Amazing little town, had a half pint at the Nutshell and enjoyed the abbey ruins and park. Just a lovely little town.

never knew he had a connection my town what you know Bury St Edmunds has more History to unearth. the Town is already very well known in History. one of the biggest things the Town is known for is the Witch trials seem the Town had the biggest Witch trial in history in England. i think 19 to 24 people died in one day in the witch trials then even Kings and Queens stayed in Bury St Edmunds aswell like King Henry VIII lived here for along time even killed people.

The Slovak name Šurany, which is what they use here, is pronounced fairly close to what they say - of course, they have English accents; the A should not be so accented and prolonged. :-)
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C5%A0urany - it was a multicultural region so slightly different words for the town in different languages, and they went with the Slovak.
