The other day I was at a bus stop in L.A, just got off work, lit a spliff, and a bum with his radio was playing this song..I was immediately transfixed and sent to a serene place. It felt so good! I couldn't remember the name of the song until a few minutes ago, and I got the same feeling all over again.
Well.....I just turned 72 last month. And.....I just started listening to this soulful classic about a week ago. I wish that I had not waited so long to re-experience it!!! It makes me cry!
This song makes me wanna cry, it reminds me of being a kid and playing with my Dad outside under the big tree we had in our yard. It reminds me of the times that we used to fish and take trips in our camper. What I wouldn't give to have those days back at my feet again!
This song always reminds me of when I had just turned 17 years old and had enlisted in the Army Nov. 1970. I was sent to Fort Polk, LA, a.k.a Tigerland for Vietnam combat training along with a lot of draftees. That is what it always takes me back to, actually to a vivid memory of a specific event. But, I have always loved the Four Tops and both versions (Peace) and (Love) of this song more than any other song in my life! I miss them so much!

I think this song describes the ideal marriage in the opening monologue. I rank it as one of the most beautiful "r&b" tunes ever written, right alongside Smokey Robinson's "I Love Your Face." I yearn for, but have not had this experience in marriage. I was once married for 16 years. On our 6th anniversary we lost a 2 yr old due to an accident at our friends' home and things began to crumble thereafter. We struggled for an additional 10 years (including a 2 year separation). He's been deceased now (my ex-husband) for 9 years. However, until my last breath I will continue to pray for and imagine what it would be like to be happily married.

When I was 14 and had a Motown Collection on vinyl...1972, I used to think this reminded me of Amelia Earhart. The arrangement made me think her plane, lying on the ocean floor and sun filtering through down to where she rested. It had this eerie, ethereal quality to it.
You have to appriciate the fine arrangement by the Funk Brothers , who start out with Uriel Jones' drums at the beginning , then Jack Brokenshaw falling in on the vibes , Eddie " Chank " Willis , Robert White , Joe Messina on the guitars then James Jamerson on bass with Johnny Griffith on the clavinet .
We should all be so lucky to walk with God and live our lives in peace, harmony and strive to make him happy for all that he has done for us by being good to one another, stop hating and causing turmoil for others. Imagine how good that would be that we could make him smile and relax knowing the world he created is in good hands and his sacrifice of Jesus was worth it.
