Diva on Ice! Utter perfection. Not like these lazy Janes' of this olympics; multiple falls. The Nancys and Scotts of yester-year would never think of coming out on the ice for the Olympics with any chance of skidding, tripping or falling. They were READY and not giving us their PRACTICE routines.
Wow, when I see this again now, her routines & Oksana Baiul's routines, I really don't think I could say who was better. At the time I was just a kid,& naturally I was rooting for the person from my country,so I was angry about the scores. But seeing it again now,I can totally see how close it really was.I don't think I could have picked-they're both such different skaters with different styles.Though it seemed like back then, the short program didn't count practically for anything.I know even now the long program always counts for more, but back then it seemed like it was everything. Like when they explained how it was that Oksana won,I'm still confused because it almost seems as though they didn't even factor in the short program. But of course Nancy looked so amazing in her Vera Wang, she really changed how women dressed in skating-her outfits where light years ahead of their time,& by today's standards don't look dated at all.
Scott Hamilton ISN'T a trained international judge not everything he says is to the detail of correctness. BUT HE GOT IT right when he said "It's gonna be close." Scott KNEW Oksana was fully capable of outpointing Kerrigan. Because she had so many other qualities Nancy didn't have which made her skating refined & polished.
The Dude and where do you get this insight from? You, just as much as I, do not know the full truth. I choose to believe her. Make your best judgement, but you can claim that you know facts when none of us truly know the full story. And how ironic that you're using the phrase "for the love of God" when "God" wouldn't promote scandalous incidents.
The Dude I respect your perspective. However I feel different. I base this on Tanya's body language and the constant abuse she received from her husband. He was bound to do this if he was a background of violence. It makes more sense that her husband and her team was all behind it. I believe Tonya, but that's just me. Obviously you feel different so we can just agree to disagree and move on :)
The Dude she apologized. Whether she knew about the threats or not, were all human we all feel vengeance. It's only natural to make mistakes. She owned up to it and apologize. That's why I feel that she shouldn't have been banned. Like I said you feel that it was the right move. Okay good for you, bye.
The Dude I agree..of course Tonya knew about and wanted it done. All three guys arrested separately said she knew. There is so much interview footage and info about her calling for Nancy's practice schedule ect. Jeff passed two lie detectors saying Tonya knew....etc... I mean she may of been a good skater , but she never ever always won at her events, maybe 10% of the time. For people to watch her Olympic skate compared to Nancy's and still.say Tonya should of beat her is ridiculous.
@oofahman I don´t know about the rip off part. But, Kerrigan was so superior to Biaul. The line, the control, the strength all there. Kerrigan showed a strong modern style. I´d take it anytime over twirling tops and dying swan ballet affectation.
Who has the gold medal for the 1994 Olympics? Oksana. Who has the 1993 world championships medal? Oksana. Who is recorded in the official Olympic records as Olympic champion? Oksana. When the lists of winter Olympic medal winners is recorded in any encyclopedia it lists only the gold medal champion. For 1994 this would be Oksana. The best win period. Crazy old fools.
Why does Scott Hamilton say that the triple lutz combination jump and the double axel jump were the only difficult elements in this program? You have to be well-trained to pull off any one of the required elements, you can make mistakes on any of them, and if nothing else was difficult, then why did no other skater at this event perform a similar spiral sequence, for example?
My mother and I were supporting Oksana and almost cried when she won the gold medal. Kerri was good, yes, but not so elegant like Oskana. BDW You could feel the anguish of Oksana in her participations, because she knows that Kerringan Have all media attention.
The double axel is a forward jump,2 and 1/2 revolutions landing in the opposite direction and the lutz is an inside edge jump. Doing three rotations of a lutz is extremely difficult going right into a double two loop...w/out two footing the landing [someone say oksana bauil?] Nancys' spiral sequence was fantastic but you have to do the jumps.Nancy DID do the jumps w/no two footed landings&deserved to win the OP.How Bauil was placed in 2nd is beyond me.4th would've been more appropriate.
LOL @ all these comments from these haters in here. As if Nancy asked to be hit the knee and almost put out of these games. This girl went through hell 6 weeks prior to the event. She had to rehab like crazy just to give herself a chance to get on the ice and all some of you want to talk about is how she could have been more gracious in defeat. Lets see how you feel if you work your whole life for something and almost have it taken away once by a thug with a baton and the other time actually have it taken away by an anti American German Judge..
It took four other commie bastards to pull that off. It was by design that the German judge took all of the heat taking the attention away from the other no good pinko judges. He even placed her 2nd here. This burned me up more than the Tonya Harding thing. In the long program he had them tied, but made damn sure he put Okasana in the tie breaker which was the artistic performance and all of the attention went towards him. Another western judge and we talk about the amazing comeback Nancy Kerrigan did winning the gold medal which she really did win. The press is responsible for the image of her being all of the things that pelican peter said.
You Americans could've watched Tonya & Nancy go against each other in the US pros where they both belonged. Skating could've witnessed a new era of young skaters headed by Baiul, Kwan, and many more taking the sport to new heights. The sport was better off if she'd missed those games.
That murder has a bearing on Kerrigan's character. In court Kerrigan's ex-sister in law testified that her brother Mark resented how everything in the family was built around Kerrigan. He grew to resent it til his became hate that boiled over. She isn't close with any of her siblings. She's a monster.
After this short program, many thought the Gold was hers. If she would have grab the Gold and Bayul the silver, we would have the delight to see Bayul perfect her techniques and develop as a sublime skater towards Nagano 1998.
I love this program, but casting a critical eye, Oksana's spins and step sequence were superior. If Oksana hadn't botched the combination, there is little doubt she would have won the short.
Kerrigan looked rehearsed like she worked very hard on each element. You could see her concentrating very hard. It was a by the numbers performance no inspiration. The music? What was the performance about? Even in the lp a Broadway medley is better than a Neil Diamond medley.
You insult Kwan? One of the greatest skaters to come out of the USA? I think the history record will remember Kwan as far greater than Kerrigan who stole Kwan's chance back in 1994. Which means this girl would've anchored 4 American Olympic teams. = far, far greater than Kerrigan!
No the Chinese,Czech & Polish judges too this makes 4. British judge was reprimanded & she admitted to being influenced by the sympathy vote for Kerrigan.
You are really commenting on choroegraphy, and not on her interpretation. As far as 0:32 and 1:38-I wouldn't have put those moves in, but she did do them well. I admit I prefer Oksana artistically over Nancy, but Nancy really was the stronger skater-but Oksana won on artistic merit. Oksana did several two foot landings, and several others were shaky, but having seen both skaters live, I again say I prefer Oksana. But that doesn't negate the facts-footage shows it. Peace.
That was Verne Lundquist with Scott Hamilton, not Dick Button doing the commentary but take care! I'm not a Kerrigan fan but Chen Lu should've won. Bauil was placed way too high in the OP.
Cohen's skating leaves me cold. She was an artistic flop at the skating box office as well. Oksana drew far more audiences & had tons more fans than Cohen could ever hope for so she wasn't more artistic. Millions of people can't be wrong. Cohen has far more opportunities than Baiul.
I actually preferred Oksana's SP to Nancy's. However I thought that Nancy was technically superior in both the SP and LP. Nancy also had the most beautiful skating dresses (I know that has nothing to do with the quality of skating.) I didn't care for her music selection... except for where the step sequence starts in the SP to the end. Nancy was robbed of the gold medal. I don't know why the Polish judge gave Oksana a 5.9 for technical merit in the LP... not fair at all.
Because Oksana was like a ballerina on the ice, and she also had amazing musicality, she was one with the music..that made the artistic score higher, as it should be. Oksana was phenomenal and deserved her Gold.
Theres a point where you learn your program and another where you love your program. nancy knew her moves well but she did what she was suppose to, it lacks the heart of someone who wanted it more. Like she said, very rigid and sharp. Further proof. 1994 Both Nancy and Tonya retired. Oksana is still preforming to this day, because its not just her program or her moves, it's her passion.
The head judge also the expert judge on the panel Britta Lindgren stated Nancy's spirals were weak. She had only 1 good one the one with her hand over her heart. Britta judged her jumps flawed not clean & that Oksana's jumps were higher, longer, stronger, cleaner. The triple-triple was the highlight of NK's program. Technically she offered nothing but jumps. Weak technically elsewhere. Frontloaded = only flawed jumping offered. There are * artistic elements NK did not excel at any. s
Was NOT a 2 footed landing it was a TOUCHDOWN. The jump did Not come to a complete stop as in a two-footing landing. Baiul had control of the jump. Keep lying to yourselves. Nancy was NOT in Baiul's league. In Norway this was NOT a 2 footed landing. But Kerrigan did flutz her triple lutz jumps. Missed the edge on the 2axle jumps are jump because of the edges.
Control? She couldn't control the outside edge on her lutz jumps,or the take off edge of her double-axle jump. Control? The lousy edges on her spirals that shook & how about those spins that traveled? No skater will ever duplicate Baiul's choreography in the "Swan" or any of her programs far too complex. Keep fantasizing you live in an alternate universe of insanity.
Does anyone know the names of the songs she's skating to? I did a google search but am probably not writing the question well. Any help would be appreciated. Her music is always so lovely and spot on.
+AnneMarie Donahue She skated her short program to a song called Desperate Love )I don't know the artist) and her long program was to an instrumental Neil Diamond medley.
Myth #2. We know that Bonaly & Witt skated after Baiul if they skated well each of them could have taken at some votes away from Oksana. But these votes wouldn't have come from the "western bloc" judges. But Witt & Bonaly both failed making big mistakes in their programs. Witt still had the artistry to do some damage & Bonaly was a medal contender. Neither would've have won but they could've hurt Baiul's chances. Kerrigan wasn't robbed---she was beaten. Baiul won fair & square.
Reminds me of the type of moves cheerleaders make. Terrible choreography. Same weird stiff arm choreography in her long program. A program designed for a man not a woman.
Now before you act out, THINK how many insulting posts you continue to make and that will make you more liable to be reported against.. IF you choose to mock Nancy Kerrigan for your own folly, I will view that as a threat against Nancy Kerrigan and it will NOT be tolerated. And also can it with the comic attitude if YOU want to be treated like a human being.
People can say what they want about Nancy, that she's a bitch or whatever, but to me she was always and always will be a wonderful figure skater. She has the beauty and the talent to be the complete package. There is no doubt in my or others minds that she won that gold medal hands down. She was ripped off by the eastern bloc judging.
Funny, I ask other figure skating fans about this debacle and no one remembers the alocholic electrified poodle from the Ukraine..hmmm...remember? I doubt it..
Marry and evy scottvold. The last potential skater stopped skating in the early 00's. I forgot her name but she had beautiful choreography Ohhh Jennifer Kirk was her name. Mary and evy coach in Florida now. Good people. Hard and tough trainers. But good people.
Why are you comparing a sheerleader to a ballerina? Dance is transition, not position... Sorry to inform you: this is (artistic) figure skating: the poet of the movement wins....
Kerrigan was a left-over from the Witt era. This was a changing of the guard. Baiul/Bonaly was robbed in the technical program maybe even Chen Lu. The new skaters were so far above Nancy it wasn't funny. She robbed Kwan's chance Kwan was to debut here. Kerrigan a black sore on the sport.
Kerrigan was mediocre hack. Lucky to get the sliver. Only the BEST win the GOLD medal its the highest reward for the absolute best. Oksana Won the highest award every time she versed Nancy. You don't matter. IT'S OVER OKSANA WON SHE'S THE ICONIC CHAMPION= GOLD!!!
Stop asking in US skating circles. In Norway Kerrigan skating ability is not taken seriously. Her skills were derided as only able to hold up a leg. She is famous for winning the silver medal from the sympathy vote. I've worked abroad and traveled extensively you need to get out. Oops I forgot you're caged due to insanity.

Doing what she did best. You can't ask for anymore. Flawless, no, but still a graceful and courageous world class performance.
Nancy wasn't as in control with her skating as Tonya was. Tonya shouldn't have been banned from doing what she loved and was ridiculously good at.
She was banned from competing, not skating.
Nancy was lucky to get a medal at all. She had no right to even be at those games. Kwan was robbed of her opportunity.
what inspired this beautiful choreo sequence? a small town deputy sheriff directing traffic?
Bahahaha. That's about right.
i'm surprised she didnt get a solid 6.0 score, with her SP so beautifully done.
You have to be well-trained to pull off any one of the required elements, you can make mistakes on any of them, and if nothing else was difficult, then why did no other skater at this event perform a similar spiral sequence, for example?
maravillosa aun despues de 6 años, es la mejor de todas
She also two-footed TWO landings, Kerrigan did not. Kerrigans grace and elegance far exceeded that of the waif from the Ukraine.
Kerrigan's endings were always better tight. Technically, if it wasn't for the bogus GBR judge, she would have beat Oksana.
Actually, the British judge marked her much lower as well, not just the German. Would you call that judge anti-American too?
Tacks Sherbo you can clearly get that something is off when you are 0.2pts lower than the pack...
JusticeForTheSilenced like the idiot swinging that baton had precise control over where he hit her.... you are silenced...
Oksana did not win the gold medal. Those commie bastards cheated Nancy out of it. They were still fighting the cold war in their cheating ass brains.
She's a monster.
jan tellit Too bad he took it out on the dad! They should have put him 'away'!!
yeah, still no reason to murder someone for the most common problem in the world
When there is successful famous child in a family usually everything revolves around them. Yet no justification to killing somebody
After this short program, many thought the Gold was hers. If she would have grab the Gold and Bayul the silver, we would have the delight to see Bayul perfect her techniques and develop as a sublime skater towards Nagano 1998.
Now THAT would’ve been a really thrilling competition - Oksana vs. Michelle vs. Tara
I love this program, but casting a critical eye, Oksana's spins and step sequence were superior. If Oksana hadn't botched the combination, there is little doubt she would have won the short.
The music is called Desparate Love by mark militano
. Im not sure if I spelled his name correctly.
Kerrigan looked rehearsed like she worked very hard on each element. You could see her concentrating very hard. It was a by the numbers performance no inspiration. The music? What was the performance about? Even in the lp a Broadway medley is better than a Neil Diamond medley.
Phenomenal
Oksana was graded & placed correctly. She was magic that night & just unstoppable. But had they continued in the future Chen would have been better.
Thats true. Sasha could just outskate Nancy with her artistry because Nancy is NOT an artistic skater.
Beautiful and clean (although a bit stiff at times), but really nowhere near to Oksana’s performance
Something to emulate
Middle of the pack skater was kerrigan
Her poor mom couldn’t even see her daughters performance
At 3:58, Tonya clapping, but really thinking: " Fall, bitch, fall !!"
Thought Kerrigan's skating would've improved I was underwhelmed at her work.
There are * artistic elements NK did not excel at any. s
@4utalentseeker: she's from stoneham, mass.
Anyone here knows the name of the music she skates in this program?
And that's how you say: Get behind me, Satan.... on ice. Well, done!
Nancy is Satan on ice. proud arrogant snobby, scheming and conceited
Fluffymuffy Pelican hush up, Tonya.
not everybody has sasha's flexibility.
What kind of music is this?
+Dennis G Thank you. :)
Mark Militano is the Desperate Love artist (and he too is a former Olympic figure skater!).
Aaaaaah shaddup (cough, cough).......lol You, my friend, has CHARACTER.
She looks like she could be Daisy Ridley's mother
Skates like a giant Boeing 747 ! Arms made of stiff metal.
HAHHA...that made me laugh...but yes, you are right. HOWEVER, she is PRETTY!
martha anderson LOL
-_- yup. . .
martha anderson Tonya skates Ike a bull moose and has dreadful arm movements and footwork.
Aspen Robinson bull moose with the first 6.0 for technical merit. Nancy was the first to get whacked and made it everyone else’s problem
Reminds me of the type of moves cheerleaders make. Terrible choreography. Same weird stiff arm choreography in her long program. A program designed for a man not a woman.
I was never a fan of Nancy Kerrigan. Her spins aren't very good compared to Tonya's. But what a great performance after all she went through.
Wow...5.6
Only in your dreams, sweetie...only in your dreams
One judge out of nine? Please...
I think jantellit123 is really Tonya Harding in disguise! >:-)
Vera Wang FTW
Oksana Baiul?
Who were her coaches anyway, I don't believe I ever saw her coaches or tonay's coaches ever again
Marry and evy scottvold. The last potential skater stopped skating in the early 00's. I forgot her name but she had beautiful choreography Ohhh Jennifer Kirk was her name. Mary and evy coach in Florida now. Good people. Hard and tough trainers. But good people.
They were also Paul Wylie's coaches, and coached him in Albertville when he won silver.
Why are you comparing a sheerleader to a ballerina?
Dance is transition, not position...
Sorry to inform you: this is (artistic) figure skating: the poet of the movement wins....
Nancy definitely skated faster, more graceful, and looked better than Tonya but I think Tonya’s choreography and moves was better
Tonya was stressed by the media, and those cameras around her did not help
Sure hope you live a perfect life to toss around those titles. All drinkers I know are 1 night away from a repeat. What's in your cup?
